AlphaMelody is een elektronisch duo van
Andras Vleminckx en Marnix Steel uit
Antwerpen. Beide muzikanten werden
grootgebracht in de diepgewortelde
Belgische cultuur van elektronische
muziek. Hun waaier aan invloeden,
gaande van Detroit techno en old-school
house tot drum ‘n’ bass en 2-step, en
muzikale raakvlakken leidden in de zomer
van 2013 uiteindelijk tot de oprichting van
het project AlphaMelody. Prepare to dive
deep.

AlphaMelody are an electronic music duo
from Antwerp, consisting of Andras
Vleminckx and Marnix Steel. Both reared
in Belgium’s deep-rooted electronic
music culture. Their various influences,

Zo geschiedde het fenomeen, het
vierkoppige creatuur, dat menig mens
onderdompelt in zijn muzikale landschap
om zo de woeste aarde te trotseren, te
temmen en eveneens te bewerken. Wees
niet bevreesd, schone. ‘Arise, fair sun, and
kill the envious moon,’ sloeg ene William
Shakespeare eens uit zijn botten op een
zonnige dag ergens aan het einde van de
zestiende eeuw. Dat is dit Gentse viertal
niet ontgaan, want met een gelijkaardig
enthousiasme trotseren ze de woeste
aarde met hun instrumentale postrock.

VIBRANTLY POUNDING
A phenomenon occurred: the creation of
a four-headed creature which drenched
many a man in its musical swamp, to
overcome the ferocious earth, to tame it, to
rewrite it. Fear not, fair maiden. This bloke
called Shakespeare once came up with the
phrase ‘Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious
moon’. It was on a sunny day by the end
of the sixteenth century. This quartet from
Ghent has picked up the man’s poetry to
baptise their instrumental post-rock, in
which they brave the ferocious earth with a
similar delight.

Wat eind 2012 van start ging als
een soloproject werd al snel een
samenwerking met internationale allures.
Het debuutalbum, dat de groep zelf
opnam en proceerde, kwam uit op 8
november 2013 en beroerde snel het
hart van menig volgeling. Dat vertaalde
zich in de tienduizenden streams van
het full album op YouTube. Het album
werd passend ‘ATMOSPHERES’
genoemd, want dat is precies wat het is:
polymere ritmes gedompeld in dromerige
melodieën.
De band blijft aan de weg timmeren met
muziek die je bewustzijn voor de gek
houdt. Sluit je ogen, droom weg en geef
jezelf over aan ‘ATMOSPHERES’.

What started out in late 2012 as a one
man project, quickly erupted into a
collaboration of international allure.
The band’s first self-recorded and
self-produced album was released on
November 8th of 2013 and quickly reached
many like-minded souls. This translated
into tens of thousands full album streams
on YouTube. The album was adequately
named ‘ATMOSPHERES’ and it’s just that :
polymeric rhythms drenched in dreamlike
melodies. Constantly working, the band
continue to write music that takes a leap

De formatie Bear Run timmert al enkele jaren
aan de weg sinds de oprichting in 2008.
Het begon als het akoestisch soloproject
van Xavier De Clercq maar groeide al
snel uit tot een volledige akoestische
groep. Na twee jaar schrijven kwam Bear
Run in april 2014 voor het eerst opnieuw
naar buiten met een nieuwe live-set, een
nieuwe sound en een volledig gewijzigde
bezetting. In november werd de debuutsingle ‘Never Been Good’ met bijhorende
videoclip gereleased. Momenteel speelt
Bear Run de nieuwe set live en werkt
intussen aan een tweede EP.

FROM GHENT
Ever since their creation in 2008 the Bear
Run combo are running for gold. Bear Run
started out as the acoustic solo project of
Xavier De Clercq but quickly became a fullblown band. After a two year songwriting
process Bear Run hit the stage again in
April 2014 with a brand new live set, a
new sound and a complete changeover of
the line-up. The debut single Never Been
Good and its accompanying videoclip
were released in November. The band is
currently setting stages on fire with their
new live set, whilst also working on a
second EP.

Sinds haar dertiende schrijft Billie Leyers
haar eigen muziek, geïnspireerd door haar
grote voorbeelden Michael Jackson en
Stevie Wonder. De songs bleven vroeger
beperkt tot huisgemaakte demo’s, maar
sinds ze Muziekproductie studeert aan
het conservatorium in Gent en ze een
resem klassemuzikanten rond zich heen
heeft verzameld, klinkt de muziek een pak
steviger en vinden we haar steeds vaker
terug op grotere podia.

Inspired by Michael Jackson and Stevie
Wonder, Billie Leyers started writing music
when she was thirteen. These songs were
basically home-recorded demos, but since
her enrolment as a student at the Royal
Conservatory of Ghent she has teamed
up with first-class musicians. Her music
has finally got the solid sound it asked for,
which also came to the attention of the
bigger venues.

Black Tolex werkte de afgelopen jaren

het voorjaar van 2015 komt hun eerste

Als trio met een gemiddelde leeftijd van 13
jaar zette Bogus zijn eerste stapjes in de
muziekwereld in 2006. Het jaar daarop
haalden ze hun eerste prijs binnen door
de jury van kunstbende te overtuigen met
hun jonge improvisatorische talenten op
sax, gitaar en cajon. Met de aanvulling
van bas en drum kreeg de muziek van
Bogus een energieke boost. Ze brachten
verschillende concerten in Duitsland,
Frankrijk en Portugal. In december 2014
komt het langverwachte album uit waarin er
geflirt wordt met wereldmuziek en jazz in de
composities van de broers De Schepper.

AND IMPROVISATIONS
As a trio in which the average age was 13,
Bogus made its first steps in the music
business in 2006. In 2007 they won the
first prize in the Kunstbende contest,
convincing the jury with their improvisation
skills on sax, guitar and cajon. Adding
bass and drums, the music of Bogus got
an energy boost. They played concerts
in Germany, France and Portugal. The
long-awaited album will be released in
December 2014. Expect compositions of
the De Schepper brothers which flirt with
jazz and world music.

Brent Beukelaer is een verse kleinkunstenaar
met een sterk kollektief in het gezellige
Vlaanderen. Hij volgt niet enkel de
sporen van de kleinkunst maar wijkt
ook uit via kleine zandweggetje en
bospaden naar folkrock en 21ste eeuwse
troubadoursmuziek met rootsy invloeden.
Zijn kollektief bestaat uit 7 muzikanten,
samengeroepen van over heel Vlaanderen
en verenigd in Gent. Brent Beukelaer heeft
het altijd spijtig gevonden om grootheden
als Wim de Craene, Lieven Tavernier, Lieven
Coppieters en Kris de Bruyne niet als
overbuur te hebben. Hij probeert nu zelf zijn
kruimels achter te laten in de voetsporen
van de groten.

Brent Beukelaer is a young voice in what
they call ‘kleinkunst’ over here (a genre
name for Flemish songwriting). Besides
influences from kleinkunst he also draws
from folkrock and 21st century minstrel
music with rootsy touches. His collective
consists of seven musicians from all over
Flanders but gathered in Ghent. Brent
Beukelaer has always regretted not having
lived across the street from legends such
as Wim De Craene, Lieven Tavernier,
Lieven Coppieters and Kris De Bruyne. He
is now carefully trying to leave a mark on
the scene that was paved by the big shots.

EEN ELEKTRONISCH AURA
Het verhaal van Byron Bay begint in 2012.
Frontman Tom Verstappen (22) laat een
eerste keer van zich horen nadat zijn
tijdloze nummer ‘God only knows’ als Vibeplaat van de week airplay krijgt op Radio 1.
De vergelijkingen met Ben Howard, Fleet
Foxes en Bon Iver steken voor het eerst de
kop op maar Stappe blijft er rustig bij en
besluit zijn songs te laten rijpen tot hij klaar
is om een band rond zich te verzamelen.
Een jaar later is het zover. Met David Maes
op toetsen, Dries Lybaert op gitaar en
Sander Stuer achter de drumpads wordt
Byron Bay geboren. Dromerige folk-pop
omhuld door een subtiel elektronisch
aura, die zich prachtig ontvouwt in warme
meerstemmige explosies.

Byron Bay’s story begins in 2012 when
frontman Tom Verstappen’s song God
only knows is aired on Radio 1 as ‘Vibe
record of the week’. References to Ben
Howard, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver arise,
but ‘Stappe’ keeps calm and decides to
age his songs until he is ready to form a
band. One year later the time is right. With
David Maes on keys, Dries Lybert on guitar
and Sander Stuer operating the drum
pads, Byron Bay is born. Dreamy folk pop
covered with a subtle electronic aura that
unfolds in warm polyphonous explosions.

Faut le faire. Zonder ooit één noot live te
hebben gespeeld meteen al bejubeld
worden door Radio 1 als “misschien wel
de beste band van het vi.be seizoen”. Het
overkwam Faces On Tv, de Gentse groep
rond Jasper Maekelberg. De charismatische
en uiterst getalenteerde frontman maakt
deel uit van Yuko en Amongster, werkte als
engineer/producer voor acts als Jef Neve,
Gabriel Rios en Mintzkov maar is bovenal
een begenadigde zanger/liedjesschrijver.
De groep werkt momenteel in alle rust aan
een debuutalbum dat in 2015 verschijnt op
WasteMyTalent, het kersverse indie sublabel
van WasteMyRecords (Creature With The
Atom Brain, Bed Rugs, Erikson Delcroix...).
Een eerste FOTV-single is voorzien voor het
voorjaar van 2015.

Faut le faire. Receiving critical acclaim on
Radio 1 (‘Might be the best band of the Vibe
season’) before having played one note on
a live stage. That is exactly what happened
to Faces on TV, the Ghent based band of
Jasper Maekelberg. The charismatic and
extremely talented frontman is part of Yuko
and Amongster, worked as an engineer and
producer for acts such as Jef Neve, Gabriel
Rios and Mintzkov, but is above all a gifted
singer-songwriter. The band is currently
working on their debut album which will
be released through WasteMyTalent, the
brandnew indie sublabel of WasteMyRecords
(Creature With The Atom Brain, Bed Rugs,
Erikson Delcroix...). The first FOTV-single is
scheduled for spring 2015.

Fatback Brass Band is een tien-koppig
hiphop orkest uit Gent. Aangevuurd door

Flightless Bird is de band rond songwriter
en frontman Tobie Speleman. Net als hun
muziek klinkt de groepsnaam Flightless
Bird nogal melancholisch, maar wie even
de moeite neemt om zich zo’n exemplaar
voor te stellen, komt bij een categorie
vogels terecht die kenners eerder als
‘raar, maar grappig’ zouden omschrijven.
Vogels die niet kunnen vliegen. Struisvogels.
Pinguïns. Vogels die hun eigen bestaan
constant in twijfel trekken, maar het leven
voor alle andere soorten wel aangenamer
maken, door te tonen dat het altijd erger kan.

gelegenheidsproject onder de naam
Astronauts, won Kunstbende 2013, en

bezetting enkele mooie concerten,
waaronder een finaleplaats bij Jonge
Wolven 2014, een plaats op Boomtown
2014, en een voorprogramma van de
Nederlandstalige band Walrus.

The nonet centered around Sander Stuer saw
the light of day in 2012 as an occasional
project by the name of Astronauts. They
won the Kunstbende contest in 2013 and
rebaptised themselves Gilman. Ever since
the band has played various concerts with
a steady line-up. They made it to the finals
of the ‘Jonge Wolven’ contest in 2014,
played the Boomtown festival and the
support of the band Walrus.

Hert Herz is een elektronisch duo bestaande
uit Kwinten Mordijck en Lennart Heyndels.
Gewapend met een arsenaal aan analoge
synthesizers, drumcomputers en ander
luidruchtig materiaal creëren zij een sound
die menig erfgoed op zijn grondvesten doet
daveren. Hert Herz schuwt het lawaai niet,
maar is er tegelijkertijd ook niet vies van
om een goeie song ten gehore te brengen
onder het motto ‘noise / songs / noise’.

Ides Moon is de band rond zanger-multiinstrumentalist Klaas Tomme. Hij trok
naar de Audioworkx-studio in Nederland.
Daar namen ze in twee weken tijd de vijf
nummers voor hun eerste plaat op. Ides
Moon onderbouwt op EP de etherische
melodieën met dwarse, desoriënterende
grooves. De band koppelt energie aan
rust, en verweeft schijnbaar moeiteloos
complexe songstructuren door de
repetitieve ritmes. Maar vooral: de muziek
ademt, vibreert en laat veel ruimte voor
stiltes. Spannende stiltes.

Jussi is een vijfkoppige band die draait rond
singer-songwriter Jussi De Nys. Ze spelen
popmuziek met duidelijke invloeden van
folk-rock, roots en blues muziek. Jussi De
Nys (student muziekproductie) besloot na
een lange zoektocht als singer-songwriter
dat het tijd werd om een EP op te nemen.
Ondanks dat Jussi een singer-songwriter
is, speelt hij liever samen met een band
om zo de juister sfeer en energie te
creëren. Binnenkort zal Jussi zijn EP in
eigen beheer uitbrengen met bijhorende
EP-release shows in Antwerpen en Gent.

Somewhere in between her hometown
Brussels and the Scandinavian metropolis
of Stockholm this band, centered around
Chloë Nols, saw the light of day. Or the
light of moon, since the Swedish days tend
to be short. During the dark winters and
sun drenched summers, Chloë travelled to
Stockholm to do some recording sessions
with producer Christian Edgren (Stina
Nordenstam). The collaboration resulted
in melodic pop with a melancholic touch
and dark lyrics. Leonore are working on
a debut album. They are also playing a
series of try-outs as a full band.

Het programma van de Midnight Blue
Birds and their Sentimental Gentlemen is
bijzonder gevarieerd. Ze brengen zowel
dansbare swing, hartbrekende ballads, als
zelfgearrangeerde jazzhits. De Birds, drie
in getal, hebben elk een uniek stemgeluid
dat op een haast zusterlijke wijze blendt.
Net als dat van The Boswell Sisters, die
met hun driestemmige harmonie menig
hart sneller deden slaan, en op wier
repertoire dat van de Birds geïnspireerd is.
Voeg daar wat spontane choreografie en
ondeugende humor aan toe, en je waant
je met een vingerknip in een film van
Arthur Lubin of op een militaire vaudeville.

The programme of the Midnight Blue Birds
and their Sentimental Gentlemen is
extremely varied. They play swing that
moves your feet, heart-breaking ballads
and self-arranged jazz standards. The three
Birds each have their own vocal timbre,
but they blend like sisters. Much alike
that of The Boswell Sisters in fact, whose
harmonies made many hearts beat faster,
and whose oeuvre is the main source
of inspiration for The Birds. Add some
spontaneous choreography and naughty
humour to the whole, and you feel like
being in an Arthur Lubin film, or in a military
vaudeville.

Uit de ruines van bands als Canaar, Halfway
There en Under Downtown, ontstaat deze
band eind 2007. De combinatie van vijf
jongeren uit drie provincies, waaronder
twee broers en een neef, elk met een eigen
muzieksmaak en idee over muziek spuwt
een verrassend samenhangend geheel
uit, zowel muzikaal als amicaal. Stijlen
als punk, hardcore, poppunk tot metal
worden naadloos aan elkaar gerijgd tijdens
repetities tot melodieuze punkrock met het
hart op de tong en vastberadenheid in de
plectrum. De release van een eerste EP
‘Nothing To Lose’ in 2012 brengt de groep
naar een volgende stap in hun bestaan.

BLISTERING PUNK ROCK WITH TRACES
OF HEAVY AWESOMENESS
Rising from the ruins of bands such as
Canaar, Halfway There and Under
Downtown, the band erected late 2007.
The combination of five youngsters from
three provinces, of which two brothers and
a cousin, each with their own tastes and
ideas about music, led to a supprisingly
coherent sound. Genres such as punk,
hardcore, pop punk and metal are
meticulously united during rehearsals to
become melodic punk rock with an open
heart and determination. The release of the
debut EP ‘Nothing To Lose’ in 2012 took
the band to a next level.

en spelen al lang samen. Begin 2014
slaan ze de handen in elkaar en ontstaat
PeterNolder. De aandacht gaat naar eigen

alle leden. Hun invloeden zijn zeer divers,
maar hun liefde voor muzikale interactie
en improvisatie staat centraal. Zo ontstaan
frisse en stuwende harmonieën, ritmisch
experiment en energieke solo’s.

The five members of Peter Nolder study and
play together for a long time already. Early
2014 they decided to join forces. They

energetic solos.

EEN OUD VERHAAL IN
EEN NIEUW JASJE
Roselien, een klassiek geschoolde gitariste,
ontdekte het componeren op twaalfjarige
leeftijd. Ze ontwikkelde (en ontwikkelt nog
steeds) langzaam maar zeker haar eigen
geluid dat haar op haar vijftiende al in
de finale van Kunstbende en Music Live
bracht. In het najaar van 2010 bracht ze
haar eerste titelloze EP uit. Samen met
Grimelock, een duo producers uit Brussel,
bracht ze toen ook het nummer My
Balance uit op het Britse label Eight:FX. Ze
won de Melkrockrally evenals het Jonge
Wolven concours in 2011 en wel om
volgende redenen : ‘Roselien wint Jonge
Wolven omwille van haar eigenzinnige
originaliteit en gigantisch potentieel’.

YOU IN A NEW WAY
Roselien, a classically trained guitar player,
discovered composition when she
was twelve. She slowly but adequately
developed (and still does) her own sound
which took her to the finals of Kunstbende
and Music Live when she was fifteen.
In 2010 she released her first self-titled
EP. Together with Brussels producer duo
Grimelock she released the track My
Balance on the British label Eight:FX. She
was the winner of the Melkrockrally and the
‘Jonge Wolven’ contest in 2011 because
of her ‘idiosyncratic originality and gigantic
potential’.

Ruis is een nagelnieuw project van Artan
Buleshkaj (gitaar), Nils Vermeulen (bas)
en Simon Raman (drums). Zij spelen
reeds enkele jaren samen in heel wat
bands en projecten en besluiten in
2014 dat het hoog tijd is om de handen
in elkaar te slaan. Ruis vertrekt steeds
vanuit klank en eenvoud om zo tot
toegankelijke melodieën en dromerige
soundscapes te komen. Toch schuwt
het trio het onbekende niet en integreert
vaak elementen van free jazz in hun
composities.

Ruis is a brand new trio consisting of Artan
Buleshkaj (guitar), Nils Vermeulen (bass)

played together for years in various bands
and projects. Now they have decided that
the time is right for another new project.
Ruis start from pure sound and simplicity
to create beautiful and accesible melodies
and dream-like soundscapes (think of Bill
Frisell, Paul Motian, the Belgian “hoera”)
That does not mean that it can not get
heavy: the trio does not fear the unknown
and often integrates free jazz elements in
their compositions.

Het was op een warme zomerdag in
2013 toen Marta del Grandi en Heleen
Andriessen zich opsloten in een kamer
ergens in Gent, samen met een gitaar, een
keyboard en een viool. Er slingerden ook
nog een xylofoontje en een kikker rond.
Wat begon met jazzstandards spelen werd
algauw ’Senza Rane’: eigen songs met
teksten die ontroeren of een glimlach op
je gezicht toveren. Dat Marta en Heleen
ondertussen perfect op elkaar ingespeeld
zijn horen we niet enkel in de samenzang
maar ook bij de improvisatie die de liedjes
laat ademen. In augustus 2014 stelden ze
hun EP
‘The Tailor’ voor.

CUTE AND CATCHY POP SONGS
It was on a warm summer day in 2013 that
Marta del Grandi and Heleen Andriessen
locked themselves up in a room somewhere
in Ghent with only a guitar, a keyboard and
a violin at their disposal. There might have
been a xylophone and frog somewhere
in a corner too. They began playing jazz
standards but soon they transformed into
Senza Rane: self-written songs that make
you laugh and cry. Listening to their vocal
harmonies and the improvisations that let the
songs breathe a bit, you can well hear that
they have found each other in the best way
possible. In August 2014 they presented their
EP ‘The Tailor’.

Wat nu dagdromers? Dit Vlaamse kwartet
schudde in 2012 het publiek wakker
tijdens de finale van Humo’s Rock Rally.
Op exact de juiste wijze, met precies
de juiste afwijkende tonen, net op tijd.
Als dank mochten ze de publieksprijs
in ontvangst nemen. De vier bandleden
regeren in Sleepers’ Reign, het koninkrijk
voor alle slapers. Daarin kan iedereen zich
alles veroorloven. Zo kan het dus dat vier
nog-geen-twintigers zich met elektronica,
een ouderwetse Korg en het juiste gevoel
voor indiepop anno 2013 wagen aan
een klassieke popsong van meester Bob
Dylan.

What do you mean, daydreamers? This
Flemish quartet woke up the audience
during the finals of Humo’s Rock Rally in
2012. They did it the way it should be, with
the precise deviant tones, just in time. As
a result they were lauded with the prize
of the public. The four band members
reign in Sleepers’ Reign, the kingdom of
sleepers, where anything is allowed. That
means it is possible that four teenagers
play a classic Bob Dylan song with
electronics, an old-fashioned Korg and the
right feel for indie pop.

Soldier’s Heart begon in 2012 met in een
tak van het dreampopgenre waarin
onheilspellende vocalen zijn toegelaten.
Ze wonnen er een jaar later meteen een
resem presitigieuze prijzen mee voor
getalenteerde jonge bands. Kort daarna
releaseten ze hun eerste single, African
Fire, een sprankelend en door tropische
vuren aangewakkerd nummer waarme ze
de derde meestgedraaide plaat van Studio
Brussel in dat jaar in handen hadden.

Steiger is a modern jazz combo, founded by

young trio plays own work, idiosyncratic
jazz compositions composed by all three
members. This is reflected in their play
in which everyone has the same musical
weight. They are known for their energetic

collective musicality are the core aspects.

Stompin’ Caravan was founded in September
2013. The members share a preference
for musical roadtrips. The play pieces

Vermillion House is de piepjonge band van
vier Gentse muzikanten, die recent is
herrezen uit een vorig project. De bezetting
bleef reeds twee jaar onveranderd, maar de
muziek onderging zo’n danige evolutie, dat
ook de naam daar blijk van moest geven.
De nummers variëren elk behoorlijk in
genre, maar het is de sound die zorgt voor
harmonische eenheid.

Vermilion House is the ultra-young band of
four Ghent-based musicians that has just
arisen from a former project. The line-up
remained unchanged for two years, but the

samen muziek te schrijven. Ze deden al
mee aan wedstrijden zoals de Kunstbende
(2e plaats voorronde in 2011 en 2013) en
Imagine (winnaars Belgische finale 2012,
2e plaats internationale finale in Sibiu).
Sinds januari 2013 breidden ze hun set uit
met sideman Jonas Boutsen (drummer
en percussionist). Met hem doken ze
begin augustus datzelfde jaar de studio
Audioworkx in, waarbij ze hulp kregen van
producer Werner Pensaert.

such as Kunstbende (2nd place in the
first round in 2011 and 2013) and Imagine
(winners of the Belgian finals in 2012, 2nd
in the international finals in Sibiu). Ever
since January 2013 they extended their
line-up with Jonas Boutsen (drums and
percussion). Together with Boutsen they
went to the Audioworkx studio, where they
were assisted by producer Werer Pensaert.

WHO ARE WE?
The Royal Academy of Fine Arts
(KASK) and the Royal Conservatory
constitute the School of Arts of University
College Ghent. The school brings together
talented and motivated students with
outstanding educators, active artists,
designers and theorists in art and design
from all over the
world. The mission statement of the school
defines its main tasks: development of
the arts, education and research in an
international perspective.
The varied range of artistic disciplines at the
KASK & the Royal Conservatory guarantee
mutually inspiring, relatively open curricula
and programmes. This stimulation
of cross-fertilization coincides with
increasingly important interdisciplinarity
in the arts. Students also become familiar
with some of the numerous theoretical
and artistic research projects in which our
lecturers are engaged.
The KASK & Conservatory campuses
are located at the epicenter of Ghent.
Ghent is very receptive to the international
art scene and especially welcoming to
students. In addition to being imbedded
in this artistically rich environment, the
school itself is a cultural actor, organizing
exhibitions, concerts, festivals, lectures
and film screenings.
