2015 World Championships Preview
The U.S. squad includes both
Olympic veterans and first-time World
Championships team members.
Olympic synchronized diving medalists
David Boudia, Kristian Ipsen and Abby
Johnston will be diving in synchro
events in Kazan, but their new partners
will all be competing in their first
World Championships. The individual
events feature a mix of veterans and
newcomers as well.
Here’s an event-by-event breakdown of
the U.S. World Championships team.
Olympic events:
Men’s 10-meter
Will we see a podium three-peat? The
podium for this event has been identical
at the past two World Championships,
with USA’s David Boudia claiming the
silver medal in both 2011 and 2013.
China’s Qiu Bo, who finished second
to Boudia at the 2012 Olympic Games,
won the gold both years. Germany’s
Sascha Klein was the bronze medalist
in 2011 and 2013. Boudia’s medal in
2011 was the first by an American man
on the event in 25 years.
Joining Boudia in the individual
10-meter event in Kazan will be David
Dinsmore, an 18-year-old making his
World Championships debut. Dinsmore
won bronze on platform at the 2012
World Junior Championships. He
advanced to the semifinals at last
year’s FINA World Cup and finished
17th. He was the eighth in the prelims.
Men’s 3-meter
Michael Hixon will compete in his
second World Championships and his
first in the individual 3-meter. In his
first World Championships in 2013,
Hixon placed fifth in synchronized
3-meter. Hixon won bronze on 3-meter
at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and
was the 2011 Junior Pan American
Champion on the event.
Darian Schmidt will make his World
Championships debut in Kazan. This
will be just his third international meet
competing individually. Earlier this
year, he was 17th on 3-meter at a FINA
Grand Prix meet in Puerto Rico.
Men’s synchronized 10-meter
Veteran David Boudia won Olympic
bronze in this event with Nick McCrory
in 2012 and is a two-time World
Championship medalist in 10-meter
synchro (bronze in 2007 and silver
in 2009 with Thomas Finchum). Now
diving with Steele Johnson, who will be
making his World Championships debut,
Boudia has found fast success with his
new partner. The duo won the bronze
medal at last year’s FINA World Cup
in their first international competition
together. This year, they won silver at a
FINA World Series meet in Canada.
Men’s synchronized 3-meter
Olympic bronze medalist Kristian Ipsen
will be competing in his fourth World
Championships and his first with new
synchro partner Sam Dorman, who will
dive in his first World Championships.
Ipsen previously won a silver medal
in the event back in 2009 with Troy
Dumais. Ipsen and Dorman earned their
berth on the World team after finishing
first – against themselves – at the
Synchronized National Championships.
Ipsen and Dumais were second, and
Dorman and Dumais were third. Ipsen
and Dorman finished sixth at a World
Series meet in Mexico in May.
Women’s 10-meter
Both Amy Cozad and Jessica Parratto
will be competing in their second World
Championships, and they’re looking to
improve on the previous performances
by advancing to the finals and securing
a coveted Olympic quota spot for Team
USA. Cozad advanced to the semifinals
at the 2013 World Championships,
where she finished 14th – just two spots
out of the finals. Parratto finished 15th
at the 2011 World Championships. She
also competed individually at the FINA
World Cup last year, improving by one
spot to place 14th.
Women’s 3-meter
Laura Ryan and Abby Johnston will
represent the U.S. on this event at the
World Championships. Ryan competed
individually at last year’s World Cup
and advanced to the finals to finish
11th. Johnston last competed 3-meter
individually at a world meet in 2010,
when she was eighth at the World Cup.
Women’s synchronized 10-meter
Amy Cozad and Jessica Parratto will do
double duty and compete in synchro as
well as the individual 10-meter events.
Although both have been to the World
Championships before, 2015 will be the
first time either has competed synchro
at a World Championships. Cozad has
competed 10-meter synchro at the past
two FINA World Cups, including an
eighth-place finish with Katrina Young
last year.
Women’s synchronized 3-meter
Olympic silver medalist Abby Johnston
and new synchro partner Laura Ryan
earned the World Championships
berth on 3-meter synchro after winning
the title at the 2015 USA Diving
Synchronized National Championships.
They also competed together at last
year’s FINA World Cup.
Other events:
Men’s 1-meter
Kristian Ipsen and Michael Hixon will
compete 1-meter after placing first and
second, respectively, on the event at
the 2014 USA Diving Winter Nationals.
Ipsen also competed 1-meter at the
2013 World Championships, while this
will mark Hixon’s first time competing
the event at a World Championships.
Both divers medaled on 1-meter at past
World Junior Diving Championships.
Women’s 1-meter
Samantha Pickens won her first
national title with a 1-meter victory at
Winter Nationals in December to qualify
for her second World Championships.
Mixed synchronized diving
New to the World Championships this
year is mixed synchronized diving, an
event that pairs a male and female diver
together in synchronized competition.
Abby Johnston and Jordan Windle won
the mixed 3-meter synchro title at the
Synchronized National Championships
to earn the world berth for that event,
while Samantha “Murphy” Bromberg
and Mark Anderson won mixed
10-meter synchro.

High Diving
FINA will include high diving on the schedule at the World Championships for the second time, having debuted the discipline at
the 2013 Championships in Barcelona. Competition will be contested for both men and women.
Schedule
August 3: 2 p.m. - Men’s 27-meter high diving, rounds 1-3
August 4: 2 p.m. - Women’s 20-meter high diving
August 5: 2 p.m. - Men’s 27-meter high diving, rounds 4-5
FINA introduced high diving to its events in 2013, and the U.S. women have been a mainstay atop the podium right
from the start.
Cesilie Carlton was crowned the first women’s high diving world champion after winning gold at the 2013 FINA World
Championships in Barcelona. Teammate Ginger Huber took the silver.
In 2014 FINA held its first High Diving World Cup, and the U.S. women swept the podium in Kazan, Russia – the site
of this year’s World Championships. Rachelle “Rocco” Simpson won the gold, Huber the silver and Carlton the bronze.
Simpson won her second World Cup gold with a victory at the 2015 FINA High Diving World Cup in Cozumel, Mexico
in May.
Will the U.S. women continue their dominance at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan?
Simpson, Carlton, Huber and Tara Hyer Tira make up a strong U.S. women’s team that will challenge for medals at
the second FINA World Championships to include high diving.
Look for the U.S. men to challenge for medals in Kazan as well. Steve LoBue took bronze at both the 2014 and 2015
FINA High Diving World Cup events. David Colturi and Andy Jones also will compete for Team USA in Kazan.
All U.S. athletes for high diving were selected by FINA.
Cesilie Carlton
From San Antonio, Texas, Cesilie started out as a swimmer and then became a gymnast. She began springboard diving at age
15, but never competed as a platform diver. Cesilie won junior college national titles on 1-meter and 3-meter while attending
Palo Alto College in San Antonio. She performed for Sea World for four years and then moved to China to perform in shows
there. She is coached by her husband, Jason, who got her started in high diving. Cesilie also works as a personal trainer.
Competitive highlights:
FINA – Cesilie won gold in the first FINA World Championships High Diving event back in 2013. In 2014 she took the bronze at
the World Cup, sweeping the podium with fellow Americans Rachelle Simpson and Ginger Huber. She finished fifth in the 2015
High Diving World Cup in Cozumel.
Red Bull – Cesilie won the 2015 stop in Portugal after placing fifth at the first competition of the year in Texas. That ties her for
first in the current overall standings of the Red Bull Women’s Cliff Diving World Series. In 2014, Cesilie finished sixth overall
with 290 points, tied with Tara Hyer-Tira. In the three stops, Cesilie finished third in the United States, eighth in Norway and
fourth in Mexico.
Ginger Huber
Originally from Atlanta, Ginger lives in San Diego and travels to Tijuana, Mexico to train. Is coached by her husband, Chris
Huber. She also works at Sea World performing in acrobatic shows. She has been performing and doing high diving for about
20 years now. Ginger dove collegiately at the University of Georgia. She also recently got involved in high school diving as a
coach and judge.
Competitive highlights:
FINA - In her third year competing at FINA high diving events, Ginger finished sixth at the 2015 High Diving World Cup. Last
year, she won silver at the World Cup behind fellow American Rachelle Simpson and in front of Cesilie Carlton, also from the
USA. In 2013, she won silver on the FINA World Championship high dive event in Barcelona.
Red Bull - Ginger currently sits third in the Red Bull Women’s Cliff Diving World Series. She was third at both 2015 events thus
far, In Texas and Portugal. She has worked her way up after finishing fourth in the 2014 Series. That year she placed sixth in
the United States, third in Norway and third in Mexico.

High Diving
Tara Hyer Tira
Tara comes from a diving family. She has five brothers who were all divers, and her mom was also a diver. Tara started diving
when she was 5 years old and dove collegiately for Notre Dame. After her college career, she began performing in acrobatic
shows for Sea World in San Antonio. She now lives in Mountain View, Calif., and trains four days a week with coach Oleg Andriyuk at Stanford University. Originally from Tampa, Fla., Tara now works as a graphic designer and bikram yoga instructor.
Competitive highlights:
FINA – Tara finished seventh in the 2015 FINA High Diving World Cup. This comes after a fifth place finish on 20-meter high
dive in the 2013 FINA World Championships. In the inaugural FINA High Diving World Cup, Tara finished eigth.
Red Bull - Tara, one of six wildcard competitors of 10 women, is currently seventh in the Red Bull Women’s Cliff Diving World
Series. She placed seventh in the United States stop of the 2015 Series and was eighth in Portugal. In 2014, Tara finished fifth
in the Series with 290 points, tied with Cesilie Carlton. Her best finish of that year came in Norway, where she was fourth.
Rachelle Simpson
Originally from Louisiana, Rachelle now lives in San Antonio, Texas. She comes from a gymnastics background, with her parents running a gymnastics school. Rachelle started platform diving at age 14 and after graduating from high school, she started
performing in acrobatic diving shows at Sea World. She then moved to China to work for the House of Dancing Water, which
is where she got her start in high diving. In 2014, she began high diving competitively. She and her husband, Josh, have three
giant dogs. She is coached by Jason Carlton, husband of fellow high diver and training parter Cesilie Carlton.
Competitive highlights:
FINA – In 2015, Rachelle won her second gold medal at the FINA High Diving World Cup with an 18-point margin over Germany’s Anna Bader. At the 2014 FINA World Cup, she also won gold, leading a sweep of the podium by the American women
along with silver medalist Ginger Huber and bronze medalist Cesilie Carlton.
Red Bull – With a win at the stop in Texas, Rachelle is tied for first in the overall standings of the 2015 Red Bull Women’s Cliff
Diving World Series. She was fifth at the 2015 event in Portugal. In 2014, Rachelle became the first champion of the Red Bull
Women’s Cliff Diving World Series after placing first in all three stops of the series: United States, Norway and Mexico.
David Colturi
Oriiginally from Sylvania, Ohio, David was an All-American diver for Purdue University. He now lives in Los Angeles, where he
trains and coaches with the Trojan Dive Club. David was the U.S. national champion on 10-meter in 2009. He started diving at
age 5. He started high diving at Indiana Beach, not far from Purdue. Fellow high diver and Purdue alum Steven LoBue introduced him to show diving and high diving opportunties.
Competitive highlights:
FINA - David finished sixth in the 2015 FINA High Diving World Cup. He also finished sixth in the 2014 World Cup as one of the
only divers to attempt a degree of difficulty of 6.2 in the final round.
Red Bull - After three stops in the 2015 Red Bull Men’s Cliff Diving World Series, David sits fourth in overall standings with 360
points. He is the highest ranked American in the Series this year. David began in the Series in 2011, but only competed in one
of seven stops, the United States, where he placed 14th. In 2012 David came back ready to compete and finished in fifth place
overall. He was sixth in the 2013 standings. His first competition win came that year in Italy. David was sixth in the overall standings in 2014.
Andy Jones
Andy grew up in Sandy, Utah as a skier and baseball player. He started diving near the end of high school and walked on to the
team at the University of Utah. He earned a scholarship after two years. Andy graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise
and sports science in 2007. Andy has performed with Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and now works as a stuntman in Los Angeles.

Steven LoBue
Originally from New Jersey, Steven now trains in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he also coaches with the Fort Lauderdale Dive
Team and works as a personal trainer. Prior to starting as a high diver, Steven was an All-American diver at Purdue University.
Steven started diving at age 7 and became interested in show diving because of an assistant coach he’d had in New Jersey
who had done some show diving himself, introducing Steven to another world of diving. After graduating from Purdue in 2009,
Steven spent a year in China performing in shows and doing high diving before joining the Red Bull World Series in 2011.
Competitive highlights:
FINA: In 2015, the third year of the FINA high dive event, Steven finished third with a score of 553.80, behind Russia’s Artem
Silchenko and Colombia’s Orlando Duque. Steven also won bronze at the 2014 FINA High Diving World Cup, with a total score
of 571.70. He had gone into this event as the one to watch, finishing first after the first three rounds of dives. He found some
difficulty with his final dive, and was overtaken by gold medalist Orlando Duque of Colombia and silver medalist Gary Hunt of
Great Britain. This is a six place jump from 2013 when he first competed in the event and placed ninth, scoring 445.80.
Red Bull - After five competitions in 2015, he currently sits ninth in overall standings of the Red Bull Men’s Cliff Diving World
Series. In 2014, he finished third overall, with three podium finishes: a win in Portugal, second place in Ireland and third place
in the U.S. In 2013, he spent much of the season increasing his degree of difficulty. He was able to pull out second place finishes in Italy and Thailand, but finished fifth overall in the Series. In 2012, he was third overall after a victory in Wales and two
second-place finishes as well. He began competing in the Series in 2011, finishing 10th in the overall standings.

About Diving
Brief History
Diving’s roots date back to the 17th
century when gymnasts in Sweden and
Germany would practice their sport
over water on equipment set up on the
beaches during the summer months.
The activity became popular and eventually branched away from gymnastics
to form a new acrobatic sport.
Diving was first included in the Olympic
program at the 1904 Games in St. Louis
when a men’s springboard competition was held. Dr. G.E. Sheldon of the
United States became the first Olympic
diving champion. Men’s platform was
added for the 1908 Games in London
as H. Sohanssen of Sweden claimed
the gold. Platform diving for women
appeared at the 1912 Games, with
women’s springboard added by 1920.
Greta Johansson of Sweden and Aileen
Riggin of the United States were the
first Olympic champions for women’s
platform and springboard, respectively.
Synchronized diving made its Olympic
debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney,
Australia.
The Competition
the semifinals, and the top 12 from the
semis will advance to the finals. For
synchro events, the top 12 teams in
prelims will advance to finals.
The preliminaries, semifinals and finals
will be scored as separate events, as
scores do not carry over.
In the springboard events, divers
choose dives from the following five
groups: forward, back, inward, reverse
and twisting. For men, one dive from
each must be used as required dives,
with a sixth dive that may come from
any group. None of the dives may be
repeated.
In platform diving, a sixth group, armstand, is used. Men must perform one
dive from each group, and women must
select five dives from different groups.
The four synchronized diving events
will include five rounds for women and
six for men. Each pair must perform
two rounds of dives with an assigned
degree of difficulty regardless of the formula and three (four for men) optional
dives with no limit in degree of difficulty.
Divers must perform dives from five
different groups of dives (i.e. forward,
backward). In mixed gender synchronized events, teams will perform five
dives.
The World Championships will feature diving competition in 1-meter
springboard, 3-meter springboard,
10-meter platform, 3-meter springboard
synchronized and 10-meter platform
synchronized, events for both men
and women. The individual events will
include preliminary, semifinal and final
sessions, while the synchronized events
are preliminary and finals only.
Groups of Dives
The individual events will consist of
optional dives only (no limit in degree of
difficulty). Women will perform five dives
and men will perform six dives in each
session (preliminary, semifinal and final;
no semfinals in 1-meter).
Back: The dive begins with the diver at
the end of the board with back toward
the water. The direction of rotation is
away from the board.
In the 1-meter events, the top 12 divers
from the preliminaries will advance to
the finals. In the 3-meter and 10-meter
individual contests, the top 18 divers
from the preliminaries will advance to
Forward: The diver faces the front of
the board and rotates toward the water.
Dives in this group vary from the simple
front dive to the extremely difficult forward four and one-half somersault.
Reverse: These dives begin with the
diver facing the front of the board (using
a forward approach) and rotating toward
the board. This group of dives were
formerly called “gainers.”
Inward: The diver stands on the end of
the board with back toward the water
and rotates toward the water (opposite of back dives). These dives were
formerly called “cutaways.”
Twisting: Includes any forward, back,
inward or reverse dive with a twist. This
group includes the greatest number
of dives because of all the possible
combinations.
Armstand: Used only in platform diving, these dives begin with the diver
assuming a handstand position on the
edge of the platform before executing
the dive.
Body Positions
Straight: This position requires that
there be no bend at the waist or the
knees. The arm placement is either by
the diver’s choice or defined by the dive
performed. Listed as “A”.
Pike: Legs are straight with the body
bent at the waist. Again, arm position
is either decided on by the diver or dictated by the type of dive. Listed as “B”.
Tuck: The body is bent at both the waist
and the knees. The thighs are drawn to
the chest while the heels are kept close
to the buttocks. Listed as “C”.
Free: This is the diver’s option of using
a combination of the other three positions. The free position is only used
in dives that include twists. The most
common combination is straight and
pike. Listed as “D”.

About Diving
Judging
At the beginning of a dive, a diver’s
body should be straight, head erect,
heels together and arms straight to
the sides. Once the diver stands on
the front end of the board to perform a
standing dive, the judges assume the
dive has begun.
In judging a dive, certain parts of each
dive must be analyzed and evaluated,
and an overall award obtained. The
parts of a dive are:
Approach: In forward dives, the starting position is assumed when the diver
is ready to take the first step. The
forward approach must be smooth,
straight and forceful. It should be
comprised of no less than three steps
before the hurdle (the jump to the end
of the board in which both feet contact
the end of the board simultaneously). If
a diver takes less than three steps, the
referee deducts two points from each
judge’s award.
Takeoff: The takeoff should be forceful and confident, show control and
balance, and proceed without delay.
In running dives, the takeoff from the
springboard must be from both feet
simultaneously. In back takeoffs, the
diver is not allowed to lift his feet from
the board before the actual takeoff, but
may use his own method of arm swings.
During a back dive, a diver is not allowed to excessively rock the board
before taking off. A violation costs two
points from each judge’s score.
Elevation: The amount of spring or lift
a diver receives from the takeoff greatly
affects the appearance of the dive.
Since more height means more time,
a higher dive generally permits greater
accuracy and smoothness of movement. If, on any dive, the diver touches
the end of the board or dives to the side
of the direct line of flight, the judges
may deduct points at their discretion.
Execution: This is the most important,
as this is the dive itself. A judge watches for proper mechanical performance,
technique, form and grace.
Entry: The entry is very significant
because it is the last element of the
dive the judges see, and is probably the
one they will remember best. The two
criteria to be evaluated on entry are the
angle, which should be near vertical,
and the amount of splash, which should
be as little as possible.
Scoring
A diving contest is conducted by a referee, seven judges (11 for synchronized
events), a secretary and an announcer.
The referee ensures all regulations are
observed. After each dive, the referee
signals to the judges. Each judge, without communicating with his colleagues,
immediately flashes his award.
Judges scores range from 0 to 10 and
are awarded in full or half-point increments. The scores and their descriptions are as follows:
0
Completely failed
1/2 - 2
Unsatisfactory
2 1/2 - 4 1/2
Deficient
5 - 6 1/2
Satisfactory
7-8
Good
8 1/2 - 9 1/2
Very good
10
Excellent
The dive is then scored in this manner:
The seven scores are announced. The
two highest and two lowest scores are
eliminated. The remaining scores are
added and then multiplied by the DD
rating assigned to the dive. The DD is
predetermined with a table range from
1.2 to 4.1 in one-tenth increments.
For example: Awards = 6-5-5-5-5-5-4;
Sum (high and low score eliminated)
= 15; DD in this example = 2.0; Total
score is 15 x 2.0 = 30 points.
In synchronized diving, three judges
score one diver as an individual, three
other judges score the second diver as
an individual, and the remaining five
judges score the synchronization of the
dive. The highest and lowest of each
diver’s individual scores are eliminated,
and the highest and lowest scores for
synchronization are eliminated. The
two remaining individual scores are
then added to the three synchronization scores. The five scores are then
multiplied by 0.6, and that number is
multiplied by the degree of difficulty.
