graduation from Goodwin College.

Program
The mission of Goodwin College is to educate a diverse student
population in a dynamic environment that aligns education, commerce,
and community. Our innovative programs of study prepare students
for professional careers while promoting lifelong learning and civic
responsibility. As a nurturing college community, we challenge students,
faculty, staff, and administration to fully realize their highest academic,
professional, and personal potential.

Mace and Medallion
Congratulations From the Board of Trustees
The ceremonial Goodwin College Mace is a part of all formal ceremonies
and convocations. The mace bearer leads the procession followed by the
President and Chair of the Board of Trustees. Our mace bearer will be the
Chair of the Faculty Senate, currently Sherrilyn Bernier.
The design of the mace is very specific to the College and conveys the
traditions of our institution. The top of the mace is the Goodwin College Seal.
The four small symbols attached to the staff are the State of Connecticut
Seal, the Town of East Hartford Seal, 1999, and a ship’s wheel representing
our mascot, the Navigator.
The presidential medallion is the symbol of the leadership of the College.
The components of the chain represent important dates, academic
disciplines, mottos, and other elements that tell the Goodwin College
story. These include our accrediting agency logo, NEASC (New England
Association of Schools and Colleges), the symbols of our baccalaureate
degree programs and the four symbols on the mace staff.
As stewards of the College, we support its growth and evolution, while
remaining mindful of the founding principles of the institution, chiefly,
that every student deserves the opportunity and support to succeed.
Our institutional success — and the measure of our leadership — is tied
inexorably to the success of every one of our students. For us, the reward
for our service comes each year at Commencement when we witness
hundreds receive their hard-earned degrees.

BS, Management and Leadership
Originally from Australia, but born to an American
mother, Lee moved to the United States in 1996 where
she spent the first few years getting to know her
mother’s side of the family and establishing herself
here in Connecticut. Lee first began working for an
independently-owned dealer auto auction in East
Windsor, which she still describes as one of the most fun jobs she has ever
had. A few jobs and 14 years later, in 2010 Lee enrolled at Goodwin College.
Lee went on to graduate in 2013 with an A.S. in Business Administration and
is now graduating with a B.S. in Management and Leadership.
Since graduating with her associate degree, Lee was able to move up with
her current employer, Eversource Energy, into the position of Associate
Transportation Analyst. Lee has remained connected to Goodwin College
through the Alumni Leadership Committee and recently was named a
member of the Goodwin College Foundation Board of Directors.
Lee resides in Berlin, CT with her partner, Alan, and their Bernese mountain
dog, Sam.
Joseph R. Marfuggi,
President and CEO, Riverfront Recapture
Mr. Marfuggi assumed staff leadership of Riverfront
Recapture, Inc. in November 1989 after serving as
Deputy Director for three years. As President, he is
responsible for a physical planning and development
staff that oversees the design and construction of
public parks and recreational facilities along the
Riverfront in Hartford and East Hartford.
Marfuggi also supervises a programs and events staff that offers
opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in, and
benefit from, the Riverfront project. Close to a million people now use the
Riverfront parks each year.
As President, he has led a development effort to raise millions in funding
commitments since 1989 for the design and construction of Riverfront park
improvements.
A native of Vermont, Mr. Marfuggi has lived in Hartford for more than 40
years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Connecticut
and a master’s degree in Communication from Stanford University. Mr.
Marfuggi served as the Assistant Director of Development at the University
of Connecticut Health Center before joining Riverfront Recapture in 1986. He
plans to remain in Hartford after he retires from Riverfront Recapture in June.
James Tillman
AS, Human Services
James Tillman grew up in the inner city of Hartford,
Connecticut. James and his two brothers were raised
by a single mother earning minimum wage and
working hard to make ends meet.
In January 1988, James was wrongfully convicted, and
sentenced to 45 years in prison, where he served over
18 years before being released.
At the pivotal moment of his life, after all his appeals were lost and there
was no hope of release, James forgave everyone involved in his wrongful
conviction. Dedicating his life to God, James released his anger, deciding
that, if he had to spend the rest of his life behind bars, he would do so
inspired by Christ. Shortly after his transformation, James received word that
Connecticut Innocence Project would be investigating his case.
On June 6, 2006, James Tillman was released from Cheshire Correctional
Institution. Transitioning to life outside of prison was not easy – but thanks
to an outpouring of support from the community, James was able to find
a job, settle into his new life, begin working towards his degree with a full
scholarship to Goodwin College, and co-author The Power Of Conviction :
My Wrongful Conviction 18 Years in Prison and the Freedom Earned Through
Forgiveness and Faith, a book telling the story of his remarkable journey.
James is an avid speaker to the younger community, visiting schools of all
levels to share his experiences and express the importance of forgiveness
and of making the right choices.
Today, James graduates with an associate degree in Human Services and
will continue to work towards his bachelor’s degree.
Bob Zellner
Civil Rights Activist
Bob Zellner became one of the first white southerners
to engage in the early Civil Rights movement,
organizing sit-ins and rallies from Missouri to
Massachusetts. Throughout his journey, Zellner was
insulted, violently beaten, and arrested more than 18
times.
In 1967, Zellner and his wife organized GROW (Grass Roots Organizing Work),
an anti-racism project for black and white workers in the Deep South.
Beginning in the mid-sixties, Zellner worked on documentary and feature
films. Zellner felt that the film “Mississippi Burning” so distorted the role of the
FBI in the movement that he toured college campuses lecturing on the real
history of the struggle.
Zellner’s memoir, The Wrong Side of Murder Creek, A White Southerner
in the Freedom Movement, a collaboration with Constance Curry and
foreword by Julian Bond, was published in 2008. The Library Journal gave
the book a Red Star Review: “He tells a story that is sometimes horrific,
always interesting and ultimately inspirational about a white Southerner’s
commitment to racial justice.”
Bob Zellner overcame fear and community pressure in order to become
an integral part of the Civil Rights movement. His incredible perseverance
helped shape the course of history, and he continues to inspire others to
seek justice and equality.
