And now I must confess,
I could use some rest.
I can't run at this pace very long.
Yes, it's quite insane,
I think it hurts my brain.
But it cleans me out and then I can go on.

we have seven boats participate, three of them
won awards. Kokomo won best Club Representation, A rgo Best under 30 feet, and Magic, Best
First Time Participant. Congratulations to you all.
Other events that happened were the New Years
Eve Cruise; no one had any fun that night. The
HISC picnic took place on Sunday January 11th,
a very blustery day. Both were well attended.

Hillsboro Inlet Bridge Construction Information
By Patricia and Robert Schuldenfrei
Esprit du Vent
.Beginning January 5 through April 30, the bridge
will be closed nightly to navigation from 7:30
p.m. to 7:30 a.m. through April 30, 2015. Mariners may request an opening during these time
periods by providing a four-hour advance notice
to the bridge tender or by calling (954)-943-1847.
New Members
Tony Darnell has become a member of the
HISC. Tony Darnell is a native Floridian who
lives in De Leon Springs which is up near Daytona. He bought a Tayana 37 in Southeastern
Florida and has decided to leave it here because
of the good access to the ocean, the Keys, and
the Bahamas. This means a commute to enjoy
the boat. He is primarily interested in cruising,
but would like to race as crew on other boats.
The vertical clearance will be reduced by 2 feet
for the duration of the project. From 7:30 p.m. on
January 20 through 7:30 a.m. on January 21, the
bridge will be closed to navigation, while the
bridge control house is moved. The north and
south side channels will be closed to navigation
during this entire time frame as there will be turbidity barriers in place and a small barge will be
behind the fender system.
His sponsors are Michael Peteler and Tom Jockers. The Board member who did the interview
was Commodore Frank Tippett.
William & Cindy Brender have joined the
HISC. Bill and Cindy are here about 4 months
out of the year. They keep their 33’ Hunter in
New Jersey, however, they are contemplating
bringing it here. They work with the Sea Scouts,
teaching them sailing, in and around the Long
Island Sound. They are interested in cruising
and joining in on many of the club functions.
The waterway will be closed to navigation from
7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for a
two week period between April 5 and July 4.
Their sponsors are Gus Sclafani and Brenda Duvall. The Board member who did the interview
was Vice Commodore Suzi Wehe.

pot! As the driver, I remembered the rule – IF
YOU DRIVE, YOU DIVE, and quickly started
pulling off my gear as the crew dropped the spin
and stopped the boat. I grabbed the sheath knife
(which race rules required us to have in the cockpit), dove in and cut the line. I was in the water
(which wasn’t too cold) for just a few seconds.
By Larry Geller
Third Tri
Three HISC boats participated in the 2015
FORT LAUDERDALE TO KEY WEST RACE
with SusimiX , Grand Cru and 24 Heures participating in this 160 mile overnight ocean race.
We re-hoisted the spin, and were quickly back on
track when we realized that while I had cut the
line, the buoys were still wrapped around the
keel. Once again, we pulled down the chute,
stopped the boat, and I dove back in. The buoys
were just floating around the keel, so they were
easy to pull away before I hopped back on board,
while the crew hoisted the spin and got the boat
moving again.
I had the pleasure of racing with Michael Carrington and aboard SusimiX , along with Randy
Tice, Carl Wehe, Eduardo Rabadan and Brian
Broad. We all enjoyed lots of laughs and were
treated to some of the best racing ever.
Needless to say, the Hobie 33 pulled away during
this excitement (they too had snagged a pot earlier in the race, but didn’t need to dive in to get unhooked), and while we were unable to catch
them, we were happy with a second place in our
fleet.
The fun began early, as we enjoyed close up
looks at awesome yachts such as the new Rambler 88 (which finished in less than 12 hours!),
the Class 40 Spookie and the Swan 80 Chessie
as they geared up for their starts just south of
Port Everglades.
Our overall elapsed time was 23hrs, 57mins and 5
seconds, and the trophy for the best corrected
time for an HISC boat went to 24 Heures, which
beat us by about 90 minutes on corrected time.
Congratulations to Dave and his crew!
Weather conditions were near perfect with
warm temperatures, a nice 10 – 15 knot northerly breeze and calm seas. We sailed under spinnaker for 90% of the race, trying to hold a
course in the shallowest water possible (while
still staying outside the reef!), in order to stay
out of the strong northbound currents.
More information about the race, along with
photos and race results can be found at
www.keywestrace.org .
We worked our way close to Fowey Rocks before dark, and then settled into our overnight
mode with two three-man crews rotating two
hour shifts. We enjoyed a beautiful star lit
night, a moonrise at about 2:00am, and some
VERY close racing and crossed throughout the
night. At sunrise the next morning, we were
well ahead of every boat in our fleet except for
the Hobie 33 Holey Toledo, who was off of our
port bow, and well ahead on corrected time.
At about 10:00am, I had a chance to drive for a
while, with the plan to push hard to get by
Holey Toledo by the end of my shift. We sailed
high with our smaller spinnaker, making small
gains only to see Holey Toledo pull back ahead
whenever the wind dropped or shifted aft. This
continued until oh s#&t - we hooked onto a crab

HISC
New Year’s Eve
Cruise
By Vice Commodore Suzi Wehe
Glory Daze
We have had another New Years Eve raft up
come and go and I believe a fun time was had by
all. With five boats hosting we had plenty of
room for all our guests and for many tasty hors
d’oeuvres and Julies shots served in shot tubes
for fun.
This was followed by our One Hit Wonder music
and guessing the artist and names of songs, our
first place winner was Gail and Jim Toups on
Fantasy.
The following boats joined us for this wonderful
evening, Joie de Vivre, Magic, Glory Daze,
Shoal Mate, Endeavor, Kokomo, Cheerios, Fantasy, Bleu Belle, Diversion, and Ira Mistic.
We had several people came back to ring in the
New Year and have champagne toasts and dancing.
I hope everyone had a great start to this new season.
