any Troy Township residents
have fond memories of parades
on Route 422, tractor pulls and
playful contests at Troy Homecomings
past. This homecoming is not a high
school dance (though there is a Contra
Dance on Saturday night and live music
throughout the weekend). Rather, it is
a century-old, free, community festival
held annually in southern Geauga
County. According to local historians,
Troy Homecoming started in 1911
when the township celebrated its 100th
birthday. Over the course of time, interest
and woman power fizzled out to the
point of Troy Homecoming extinction.
Three years ago, when Troy Township was
preparing to celebrate its bicentennial,
locals rekindled this endeared tradition.
Approaching its third anniversary
of revival, Troy Homecoming will be
held Aug. 9 through 11, 2013 at the
Troy Community Center (13950 Main
Market Road in Welshfield). A team of
community oriented people, businesses
and organizations have joined forces
to provide this free, family-friendly
event. There are plenty of activities and
entertainment for all ages to enjoy.
Do not miss the very funny Mr. Best
Legs Contest on Friday night. There are

Horseshoe and Cornhole competitions
on Saturday. Jungle Terry will excite the
youngsters Saturday morning. Civil War
encampment and demonstrations will be
present throughout the weekend. If you
are a runner, you will want to participate
in the 5K Road Apple Run, early Sunday
morning.
There is so much going on
throughout the weekend. For instance, the
Troy Township Volunteer Fire Department
will offer health and wellness checks
(blood pressure, glucose, etc.). The fire
department will demonstrate some of
their skills and give spectators opportunity
for hands-on experiences. Join your
neighbors in Sunday’s home-cooked

your car needs oil or your stomach
is growling, you need to buy a chance
at the Cardinal Safety Committee raffle.
Area businesses and merchants
have been generous in donating goods
and services to create a fabulous variety
of prizes. Spearheaded by Tom Wiant, a
maintenance engineer at KraftMaid and
grandfather to a Cardinal student, the
raffle came to life with the donation of a
vanity, countertop and mirror donated
by KraftMaid. From there, Tom visited
local businesses with a description of the
Safety Plan and asked for help. In true
Middlefield generosity, they delivered.
There will be a bathroom vanity set
(cabinet, countertop and mirror) from
KraftMaid Cabinetry, a gift basket from The
Middlefield Banking Company, a gift basket
with gift card from Watson’s Furniture, two
$75 gift baskets from Middlefield Cheese,

Don’t forget to buy your raffle tickets ($1 per ticket or $5 for six tickets). This year’s

about the plan to add safety features to the local school buildings to make the school safer
from intruders and the kinds of dangers we hear about in today’s news. These safety features
include labeling all doors and windows in our buildings using acceptable national standards,
installing consistent locking devices on the inside and outside of all classroom doors,
installing panic buttons in each classroom, and installing new recording cameras at entrances.
Safety comes at a price and this price totals over $70,000. Part of these funds will come from
money in the budget and the remainder needs to come from the community – both businesses
and residents. This is where the Middlefield Chamber of Commerce stepped up. On Aug. 23,
the Chamber will hold a golf outing at Grandview Golf Course with all the proceeds going to
the Safety Program. But the Cardinal Safety Committee hopes that our business community
and residents will be inspired to invest in the safety of our schools with additional donations.
Contact any Chamber member for tickets or Golf Outing registration. To donate to this
worthy cause, make checks payable to Cardinal Local Schools, denoted for Safety Program
and take them directly to Merry Lou Knuckles or Cindy Sague at the Board of Education office,
15982 E. High St. (Route 87) in Middlefield or mail to P.O. Box 188, Middlefield, OH 44062. For
information, contact the Chamber at 440-632-5705 or Kathy McClure at 440-632-9800. Thank
you to the businesses who stepped up with donations and thank you to Tom Wiant for his initiative.

This week’s pictures feature views of Middlefield Village in the good old days before paved
streets, both taken before 1915, the year the main streets were paved. This is a view looking east
from in front of CVS. Another dirt street with a major mud puddle right in the middle. At this
time, the Cleveland & Electric Railway Company was responsible for fixing the water problem
because their tracks were in the roadway. They were put on notice by Village council but as you
can see, they were not eager to respond. The first building on the extreme right is the old Rupe
Hotel and the building on the extreme left is the H. B. Caslow Drug Store. Middlefield even had
it’s own Gazebo Bandstand.

With the Route 87 paving project nearly completion, I thought it might be interesting to see
what the street looked like prior to the first paving. Here is a view looking toward the southwest
from the corner of North Thompson and East High Street. The four houses in the picture are still
used as residences today. The home closest to the Town Hall was at that time a wooden structure
and later was bricked to look like it does today. Can you imagine how difficult and dirty it was to
travel the streets of Middlefield prior to 1915?

By Dr. Scott J. Hunt, superintendent
Shortly after this
article posts I will
officially begin
my tenure as
superintendent.
I have spent a
great deal of the
summer learning
about the district,
meeting
with
school and community people, hiring staff
and preparing for the 2013-2014 school
year opening. I am truly excited to be
part of a new era in the Cardinal Schools
community.
In the short time that I have been on
board, it has become crystal clear that
there is great pride in the teachers and staff
members that I have met with. This pride is
also evident in the community. I have had
the opportunity to speak with community
members from the Geauga Growth
Partnership, Mayor Ben Garlich, Police
Chief Arnold Stanko, Missy Hatch as well as
other business owners. There is a definite
“community” theme in the conversations
that I have had. This is an exciting time for
the schools and for the community.
The term “community” can be defined
as a social group of any size whose
members reside in a specific locality, share
government and often have a common
cultural and historical heritage. From a
school perspective, I would also add that
to survive in the 21st Century a community
also has to have a common mission and
vision for sustainability. Thinking about
sustainability requires looking at the world

from a new perspective. By encouraging
a new way of thinking, we can begin to
change our behavior and develop new
habits that can help us improve our
community and schools. It will also allow
us to maintain a high quality of life while
maintaining and enhancing the natural
environment on which our lives depend. In
addition, it is important to build community
capital. Although we tend to think of
money or equipment when someone says
the world “capital,” in fact, there are three
kinds of capital in a community: natural
capital, human capital and financial or
built capital. All three types of capital are
equally important to a community. All
three types of capital need to be managed
with care in order to ensure that the
community does not deteriorate. In order
to avoid deterioration, I also believe that a
community must strive to reach excellence:
excellence in education, excellence
in business, and excellence in service.
Therefore it will be critically important
for the community as a whole to focus on
creating and expecting excellence.
As school opens, I will be rolling out
the Board of Education goals for this school
year. Part of my role will be to instill the
importance of community excellence
for staff and students. We will all have to
participate in creating community capital
so that we can sustain the many efforts that
will support our schools and community.
Please feel free to contact me by e-mail
or phone. I can be contacted via e-mail

SANDBLASTING & PAINTING
I would like
to take the
opportunity
in this issue
to explore the
dangers
of
hydroplaning
a n d t h e
resulting
motor vehicle
accidents.
Several area roadways pool large amounts of
water during heavy rains. These “high water”
areas have and can present a hydroplaning
hazard resulting in serious motor vehicle
accidents. The definition of “hydroplane”
from the Merriam-Webster dictionary is as
follows “hydroplane - (intransitive verb): to
skim on water; especially of a vehicle: to skid
on a wet surface (as pavement) because of a
film of water on the surface causes the tires
to lose contact with it.”
Possible causes listed on the internet at
www.Answers.com include;
1. Driving to fast in the rain.
2. Water too deep on the roadway.
3. Tires too worn out to drive on (no
tread wear left).
4. Driving right after a long drought
and the water brings oil to the surface of
the road causing the road to be slick.
5. Turning your wheel too fast to
make a turn in the rain.
6. Improper air pressure in tires.
7. Wrong type of tires on car or truck.
Whatever the cause hydroplaning
has caused several serious motor vehicle
accidents including fatalities in our area.
Please be alert to “High Water” signs,
large pools of water on roadways and
the condition of your vehicles tires.
Hydroplaning hazards increase at night
because reduced visibility hides pools of
water from view. Please exercise extreme
caution on wet roads especially during the
heavy periods of rains in the spring and the
fall. Please maintain a safe distance from
other vehicles especially during periods of
inclement weather.
Stay safe. We are pleased to serve you.

This is the second annual and it was great

spending time with him and his family and
we all had a ball at the event. The day took
a massive amount of effort by many people,

The MFM (Middlefield Farmers Market)

in Mineral Lake Park and hope to see you
there as you meet and visit with friends. If
you’ve not attended you don’t know what
you are missing. It’s such a joy to purchase
fresh, quality locally produced products.

value to our community and we look

potential manufacturing and commercial
expansions, including three manufacturing
facilities and a major retailer. I expect to see
lots of dirt moving in the next 12 months.
The Village is almost done with the

Exercisers can improve their performance
by as much as 15 percent if they listen to
music while working out. In one study,
treadmill walkers moving in time with
music felt 15 percent more energetic—
and less eager to get off the machine—
than treadmill walkers who were not
listening to music. According to the sports
psychologists who produced this statistic,
“Music listening can be an effective
dissociation strategy, reducing perceptions
of effort and fatigue by up to 12 percent.”
Dancing makes moving in time with music
into more of a party and less of a chore. “In
some ways, dancing is the best exercise—
it’s really aerobic.”

Celebrating 174 Years
In May, when Ron and Elizabeth Fales
celebrated their 60th, Diamond Wedding
Anniversary, the party included his brother
Fred, sister-in-law Joan, his sister Eleanor
and her husband Jim who were each
celebrating 55 plus years of marriage. What
joy the whole family had reminiscing about
these long-lasting marriages. The Fales
have been in Middlefield for 112 years, ever
since Ron’s grandmother had the house on
Main St. (Route 87) built. He and his siblings
were born there and Elizabeth and Ron still
live there.
All three couples graduated from
Middlefield School. In 1952, when Ron and
Elizabeth got their diplomas, there were
just 15 students in the graduating class. The
young couple eloped in 1953 when Ron was
20 and the law at that time required him to
be 21 to wed. They drove to Hagerstown,
Maryland in Elizabeth’s 1942 Mercury
convertible. Quite a daring act at the time.
But eight children, 20 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren later, through sorrows
and storms, this couple has stuck together.
Ron worked many years for Columbia Mold
and Dye, near the old bowling alley off 608.
Men who kiss their wives in
the morning are said to live five
years longer than those who
don’t. So pucker up and start
your day off right!

On his living room wall hangs a framed
article in a local newspaper from 1951
when Ron was a senior in high school. The
author refers to Ron as a budding Henry
Ford, showing a photo of the young man
who was already proprietor of Ronald’s Fix It
Shop. The picture accompanying the article
shows Ron at the wheel of his creation, a
three-wheeled automobile powered by a
discarded washing machine engine. What
creativity and inventiveness existed back in
those days. Congratulations to all the Fales
on their anniversaries.

Chocolate Covered Cell Phone
By Ellie Behman
I have found out that the little things in life sometimes turn out to be the most
memorable, funny and poignant incidents if we just open our minds and our hearts.
When our grandchildren were growing up I thought everything they said and did was
adorable and couldn’t imagine any other children as talented or as smart. I laughed at their
impish antics and realized that if my own children had done the same exact things I probably
would have disciplined them. I guess the Grama gene contains a healthy dose of sense of
humor, laughter and understanding. I’m sure my kids wish that gene had kicked in when
they got into trouble.
Life speeds by like a streamlined locomotive and before I knew it those giggly little
grandchildren grew up to be adults and had their own families. Just when I began to miss
the times I spent playing with them, along came four beautiful great grandsons one after the
other. Once again I could enjoy the little ones whose innocence and spontaneous actions
would thrill me beyond belief.
One such time happened several months ago at a family dinner. Four year old Caden
walked up to me, held out his little hand and presented me with a couple of candy kisses.
I found this act sweet and unselfish. I took the candy and placed them in my pocket and
forgot about them. The next day I slipped on the jeans, put my cell phone in my pocket and
went about my days work, cleaning and cooking. That evening I pulled out my phone and, to
my surprise, saw that it was covered from top to bottom with chocolate.
If my own children had done this as they were growing up I think I would have had (what
we called at that time) a hissy fit. This time, however, I smiled through tears, cleaned off the
chocolate and realized how blessed I was to enjoy the simple affection of a great grandchild.
I wonder if Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory ever thought of producing a
chocolate cell phone. Maybe Caden is on to something!
New MC Studio Programs
Carlene Exline (Miss Car) from MC
Studio in Burton is excited to announce
that she has added Tuesdays and Thursdays
from 1 to 4 p.m. to her preschool smARTs
program and is currently accepting new
enrollments. Children ages 2 1/2 to 3 are
welcome to attend. Potty-trained children
are preferred but it is not mandatory. The
program is designed for children to have
a smooth transition between home and
school. It is an opportunity for your active
preschooler to experience school in a fun,
artistic, home-like setting. Children will be
introduced to reading, writing, science and
math in a hands-on, creative way. They will
learn through play, movement, ART and so
much more. Visit www.misscarstudio.com
for complete details. The MWF program is
still accepting new enrollments, but there
are only a few spaces available. There will
be an Open House Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. Meet Miss Car, tour the studio and
do an art project with your child. Please call

Remembering God’s Blessings
By Thad Bergmeier
Twenty years ago this summer, a small
group of people gathered to start a new
church in central Geauga County. It was
their desire to have a spiritual community
committed to the Word of God and the
gospel message of Jesus dying in the place
of sinners. There is no doubt that over the
20 years the church has been serving this
community, there have been good and
hard times. But one constant has been
God’s continual blessing. While I have only
been here for the past few years, I consider
it a privilege to be part of Cornerstone Bible
Church.
Remembering is not something we
are really good at in our culture. If you
were to read through the Old Testament,
the concept of remembering the past was
always upon the minds of the Israelites.
In fact, it was their forgetfulness of their
past that often led them in trouble. They
would get so caught up in their present
day problems that they would forget their
past, which resulted in them turning from
the Lord.
I’m sure you’ve heard the famous idiom:
“Those who forget their pasts are destined
to repeat it.” You probably have illustrations
of how this is true in your life. It is certainly
true of history. It is also true spiritually.
When we forget what God has done for us
spiritually, we tend to drift away from Him.
When we remember what He has done for
us, we are drawn into closer communion
with Him. Proper worship of God is deeply
connected to remembering.
In Ephesians 3:11–13, the Apostle Paul
reminds people to “remember” what God
has done for them in their salvation. After
calling them to “remember” what their life
was like before they met Jesus, several
times, he concludes with this thought:
“Now in Christ Jesus you who once were far
off have been brought near by the blood of
Christ.”
Have you ever wondered why many
people in churches pray with so little
affection? Have you ever been curious as to
why Christians sing with so little passion?
Why so few have a zeal for evangelism? It is
possibly linked to forgetting what God has
done in saving them. There is great spiritual
benefit in remembering our hopeless
condition that moved God to send Jesus to
be our Savior.
We are excited that Cornerstone Bible
Church is celebrating a 20th anniversary on
Aug. 11. We will gather. It will be a party. We
In medieval times, husbands and wives
who couldn’t get along were locked in
a tall tower together and made to work
out their differences before they were
let out, or until the woman grew her hair
long enough to use it as an escape rope.
Many believe this is where the legend of
“Rapunzel” came from.
will talk about what God has done in our
community through His people over these
years. But the greatest opportunity we have
on that day is to remember what God has
done personally as He rescued us from our
sin. And as we do this, my prayer is that we
find ourselves in greater dependence upon
Him for the next twenty years. All to His
glory and our good.
