Severe Weather in Nebraska and the United States

It’s that time of year again for our annual program presented by Dr.
Ken Dewey, Applied Climatologist at UNL. Ken will give us an
overview of the nation’s extreme weather events of 2014. He will
also review the 2014 tornado season and examine how the season
compared to normal for the United States, Nebraska, and our part of
the state. Ken will also preview the Annual Central Plains Severe
Dr. Ken Dewey Weather Symposium, Weatherfest, and Spring Spotter Training
workshop that will all take place at Hardin Hall, East Campus of
UNL, on Saturday, April 11.The Weatherfest runs from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The
Severe Weather Symposium starts at 11:00 AM with Bob Henson of the Weather
Underground talking about “Where Weather and Climate Intersect.” Food trucks
will be available in front of the building so you can grab a lunch. Check out all the

W
ell, now that February is
over and we are approaching
spring, it is time for the Nebraska
ARRL End of Winter Hamfest.
This year it will be held on
March 21 at the Lancaster Event Center.
We will have a new layout, and it is going
to be an exciting time to explore and shop all
the items for sale. I urge all the Lincoln and
Lancaster County Hams to attend this wonderful and ever-expanding event.
I would like to take this time to thank
Major Jamie Pennington, KDØSXV, for his
great presentation on the SATERN program
that the Salvation Army has incorporated in
the Lincoln area. This is another great example
of how a group of volunteers can come together and provide support in the event of a natural
disaster. The canteen that has been set up has
been, and will continue to be, a huge asset to
the region.
I encourage everyone to come and listen to
Dr. Ken Dewey, WDØBIV, during the March
Club meeting. Dr. Dewey always has a great
presentation with a wealth of information on
the past year’s climate changes and a fairly
good prediction for the future. In April our
special guest speaker will be Jim Davidsaver,
Lancaster Emergency Manager, who will provide an update on what is expected of us in the
event of a call-up. You don’t want to miss this
meeting. We currently have half of the year
filled with presenters and are asking for suggestions of topics you would like to have presented. Please utilize the suggestion box and
let us know.
It was a very exciting month at my QTH
with the complete installation of my Kenwood
TS-520S and the half wave dipole. I have finally made my first QSOs, which have been
some time in the works. I would like to thank
all the Elmers who have helped me in this process. It took a little cleaning and some TLC in
order to get this rig up and going again.
Once again if you have any suggestions for
the Club events or presentations, please utilize
the suggestion box or email the Board. We are
still looking for volunteers to climb and take
down towers in the area. If you would like to
help climb or take down towers, please let me
know and I will include you on the list.

SATERN and disaster services provided by the
Salvation Army SATERN, Salvation Army Team
Emergency Response Network. Ham operators provide communication services for the Salvation
Army during emergencies.

The LARC Board met Wednesday, February
18, 7:00 PM, Hy-Vee Board Room, 6001 Village
Dr. (40th & Old Cheney). Board meetings are
held the Wednesday following the LARC Club
meeting. Club members are encouraged to attend.

A Bylaws Committee was appointed to review and make recommendations for amendments to the Club Bylaws. The current Bylaws,
dated January 1, 2012 and approved by LARC
members, do not mandate a date when the audit
is to be completed and notice published in the
LOG. The Committee will review these Bylaws
and report back to the Board with recommendations. Bylaws are available on the k0kkv.org
website.
The Board discussed the Club’s annual auction. Chris Brennfoerder, KCØAOO, will chair
the Club’s Auction Committee.
Amateur Technician Class will be held in
April.
Emergency Storm Watch changes included:

Storm Spotter Training April 11
Mark your calendar. Our annual spotter
training will be at Hardin Hall on Saturday,
April 11, as part of Ken Dewey’s CPSWS
(Central Plains Severe Weather Symposium).
Sign-in will begin at noon, and the training
program will start at 1:00 PM. Training will be
led by folks from the Valley office of the National Weather Service.
State spotter
certification will
be offered for
those who need it.
If you passed the
State Spotter credentials in 2012, then you will need to recertify. State Certification is good for three
years. In addition to attending the April 11
training, new and renewal spotters will also
have to complete the two online courses in
order to receive the State credentials. Go to:

(a) Role of Skywarn Spotters; (b) Skywarn

Radio?
Margaret, wasn’t that a
great Amateur Logic show? Did you know
there are more shows? Yet another show is
entitled “Ham Nation” on Leo Laporte’s
TWiT channel. “Ham Nation” can be found
on several channels and devices such as the
Roku as well on YouTube. The show is live
on Wednesday evenings at 8:00 PM. The
recording is available
on the following day

Our team must have quite a reputation
for someone to come all the way to Lincoln
from Oregon to take a VE Exam. (UH?)

who participated in this session were:

W1LXE, NØNU, KØPJR, KØQBZ, and
KEØY. THANK YOU!
VE Exams in Lincoln are generally held
the first Thursday of each month, at
Northside Café, 2701 North 48th St., at 6:30
PM. The next regularly scheduled VE Exams
in Lincoln will be March 5, April 2, and May
7. Sometimes holidays interfere with the usual first Thursday so the exam is held the second Thursday, but all of these dates are the
first Thursday.
Two more sessions will be held during
March. The first session is March 21, Saturday, at 10:00 AM, in conjunction with the
ARRL Nebraska State Convention at the
Lancaster Event Center. Please note that you
do not have to attend the Convention to take
a VE Exam. The second March session will
be held at Union College in conjunction with
the Amateur Extra class that KRØP,
ACØLN, and KØGND teach. And, you do
not have to be in the class to take a VE
Exam. We’ll have Technician and General
Class exams available, if someone wishes to
“drop in.”
The exam fee is $15 and a picture ID or
two IDs without pictures is required. If you
are trying for an upgrade, please bring a copy
of your license that we can keep to send in
with the paperwork. If you just recently
passed the Technician exam and have not yet
received your license, or have seen the license
posted on the FCC site, please bring a copy of
your CSCE that we can send in with the paperwork.

Wednesday, March 11, before the
LARC Club meeting. We will meet from
6:00-7:00 pm at LI-COR to begin planning
for the event on June 27-28. We will need a
lot of participating by Club members, so if

reports that he has been really busy between building a new house for himself and building new

from Afghanistan, T6T, bringing his DXCC total to
339. … Another wedding in the offing: Leroy Garman, KDØSXQ, is about to tie the knot. … Mike,
KBØDNP, and Lydia, KCØWWR, Wasserstein will
soon have much better signals after their new antennas are installed. … Same for Rick McLaughlin,
KDØDBO. … Joe Eisenberg, KØNEB, was on
hand to see the Cape Canaveral Space-X launch of
the sun observer. … Lancaster ARES was represented at the full-scale county tornado table-top
exercise on February 11 by Emergency Coordinator

1985 Club meeting program that dealt with matching feed lines. … The Board voted to no longer
mail the LOG to non-members living outside Lancaster County. … Skywarn training was held at the
Red Cross Chapter House on a quiet Saturday and
featured Omaha’s Jim Sanford, NØAIH, and his
program “Eye of the Storm.” Lancaster County EC,
Bruce Colgrove, WØDMS, reported that 29 folks
were on the call-out list and 50 more were needed.
… Ron Samson, WØDCB [SK], was the focus of
the “Meet Your Fellow Ham” column. … Jerry
Kohn, WDØEGK [SK], was appointed ARRL STM
(Section Traffic Manager) for Nebraska. … Joe
Eisenberg, KØNEB, was appointed to the ARRL’s
VHF Repeater Advisory Committee. … Members
of the Club participated in a city-wide blizzard drill
organized by the Red Cross. … National Teleconference nets were started and used the KØKKV
repeater to bring the information to local Hams. The
net featured a nationally known speaker, a moderator and the ability for Hams at participating repeaters to phone in and ask questions.
