Dear Readers,
Lighting for Tomorrow presents the winners of the 2013 Residential Lighting Design Competitions.
This brochure features the award winning lighting emitting diode products from the year’s Solid
State Lighting Competition, which includes LED lighting fixtures, fixture retrofit kits and replacement
lamps. Separate brochures featuring OLED fixtures and lighting controls are also available.
Since 2002, the Lighting for Tomorrow competition has recognized the best of the new energyefficient residential lighting products with emphasis on those with consumer appeal whose
installation and use are helping to transform the market for efficient lighting. We’ve learned that
consumers will respond to products which are not only energy efficient, but which also provide
the appearance and quality of light appropriate for the application. As a result, the market for both
fluorescent and solid-state luminaires has grown substantially and there is now an expanding range
of energy-efficient luminaires available for every type of home, room and application.
Beginning in 2006, products using light emitting diode (LED) sources were added to the Lighting
for Tomorrow judging roster, joining the dozens of fluorescent products that had been proven to be
economical, practical, and saleable. Initially, the competition focused on residential lighting niche
applications – kitchen under-cabinet, portable desk/task, outdoor porch, step and path – where
LEDs had proved to be particularly suitable. Those winning products successfully integrated
the new white-light LEDs that delivered high quality, white light with application efficiency and
performance that met or exceeded standard lighting technologies. Since then, the SSL competition
has expanded with the addition of new luminaire and application designs. This year the judges
were particularly impressed by the growing variety of LED retrofit products, the number of entries
designed to replace familiar types of household bulbs, and the LED retrofit kits, which dramatically
improve the efficiency and performance of existing ceiling fixtures without sacrificing appearance,
functionality or lighting quality.
Lighting for Tomorrow continues to look for ways to eliminate the other market barriers that slow the
adoption and use of energy-efficient residential lighting products. A significant barrier, according to
manufacturers, energy organizations and consumers, is the compatibility of fluorescent and LED
fixtures with various kinds of lighting controls. In response, Lighting for Tomorrow included lighting
controls beginning with the 2010 competition and with the thought that, increasingly, residential
lighting energy savings will depend upon a systems approach. Tomorrow’s energy savings must
involve not only an efficient lamp and luminaire, but also the way that the luminaire is dimmed
and operated.
2
The LED luminaires, LED retrofit kits, LED replacement lamps, OLED luminaires, and compatible
lighting controls awarded by the 2013 competitions were carefully evaluated and scored by a
diverse panel of expert judges based on their performance, quality, value and design. Some
products were judged clear winners since they exceeded the criteria and scored higher than other
products in their respective categories. Others were recognized as honorable mentions or being
noteworthy because they incorporated fresh ideas or promising attributes. For more information
regarding the judges and evaluation criteria, please see pages 6 and 7.
Overall, the organizers are pleased to see that the quality of the entries continue to improve. In
particular, the LED products featured in this brochure represent increasing value for the residential
consumer even though it is still early in the SSL market development process and we don’t yet
have long-term experience with white LEDs in general illumination applications. As the technology
continues to improve rapidly, we have seen past winners return with significant upgrades to their
LEDs in as little as three years.
We hope you enjoy the products showcased in this and accompanying brochures and we look
forward to supporting the continued development of energy efficient lighting.
Sincerely,
The Lighting for Tomorrow Organizers

Circular Ceiling Light fixture is especially suited for living, dining, and corridor areas in residential, hospitality, and
commercial buildings. Color temperature can be changed from 2700 to 5000 Kelvin. This color tuning function
can have many benefits including adjustment for: time of day needs, daylight/seasonal conditions, activity
specific ambiance, or specific color rendering needs. In addition, the fixture has a dimming function to control
brightness level in relation to light level needs, daylight conditions, and/or energy saving goals.
Research studies with older adults and younger students indicates that use of Kelvin changing and dimming
lighting system controls can contribute to increased mental focus, better visual acuity, reduced stress/anxiety,
and decrease in sleep disorders. Several light fixtures can be controlled as a group easily through “daisy chain”
low voltage wiring to a wall mounted controller.

Cylindra Miniature LED Trac Fixture Series
Manufacturer: Juno Lighting Group
Judges’ Remarks: This fixture has a
truly beautiful color rendering. It serves
as a competitive substitute for traditional
fixtures and provides a nice punch!
The Cylindra Miniature LED Track Fixtures look identical to, yet
outperform the 50-watt halogen fixtures they replace. The T252L
works with conventional 120V trac systems and produces up to
44% higher center beam candlepower than comparable 50watt MR16 Halogen lamps using just 18-watts. The TL252L and
TF252L Cylindra fixtures are designed for use with Juno
12-Volt Trac12 and Flex12 systems equaling the performance
of 50-Watt halogen lamps, yet consuming just 13-watts. TL/TF
series Cylindra fixtures overcome historical system limitations
of being able to operate only six halogen fixtures off of a single
300-watt 12-volt remote transformer…up to twenty-three TF/
TL252L LED fixtures can be operated per circuit, greatly reducing
the number of transformers and feed points required for an
installation. And because each fixture contains a current regulating
circuit, there are no practical concerns for voltage drop; each
fixture will produce the same light output and hold within industrybest 2-step MacAdam ellipse color range regardless of where they
are placed on a length of trac. With efficacies up to 76 lumens per
watt, multiple color temperatures, 85 and 93 CRI options, field
interchangeable spot, narrow flood and flood optics, ability to hold
one light control accessory and louvers and reliable dimming with
economical low voltage dimmers, the Cylindra LED series offers
professional grade performance without compromise.

To optimally illuminate fine artwork, you need to maximize the
spectrum of visible light utilized. However invisible rays such
as infrared and ultraviolet are damaging to color pigments.
While challenging to achieve for other light sources, that all emit
residual infrared and ultraviolet radiation, WAC picture lights
are engineered with LEDs that provide beautiful full spectrum
illumination without projected IR or UV radiation.

converting the entire lamp into a light source. Atríal delivers
beautiful high efficiency omnidirectional illumination for diverse
lighting environments.
