Restoring old tractors is their inclination
Forget the complicated mixing and feeding directions of traditional
programs. Just mix Linebacker and corn, keep the feeders full and
check your cattle every day to watch them grow. That’s it!

Taking an old tractor, sometimes in pretty rough shape, and making it
look like new is something both Ed Brown and his son Steve enjoy doing.
The Browns from Jasper have been doing this for quite a few years.
“It’s a hobby,” Ed Brown said. “You’ll never make any money doing
it.”
He noted that the object of restoring is to try and get them as close to
original as possible. This means that at times you put on a lot of miles
looking for parts and other accessories It also means that you also need
to be mechanically inclined as well as part historian when researching
the tractors.
“You get into a lot of work on all of them,” Ed said citing the work
he and Steve did on an Oliver (CleTrac) crawler Steve had purchased.
“People think that you just put in new sparkplugs, paint them and clean
them up but that isn’t the way it works.”
When asked about the number of tractors he and Steve have restored,
Ed replied, “If I had kept all the ones I have restored I could have started
a museum.” He noted that he has restored all brands and even some rare
ones like the Leader Big-Boy.
Although he has restored different brands Ed said he leans towards
Oliver tractors, mentioning that Oliver was ahead of the other brands in
the early years. He noted that Oliver was the first to put diesel engines in
their tractors.
Ed said he prefers the rare ones better because they are more
interesting to people when you take them to shows. “Take the Leader
Big-Boy,” he said. “Hardly anyone has heard of them. During the war
there were several different brands and names like Leader and so forth.
They put tractors together out of parts they could get such as a truck rear
end, a Chrysler engine, whatever, during the era of the 1940’s and 1950’s
and they all faded away.”
Ed was born and raised on a farm but is now ‘retired’ but prior to that
he had farmed in Minnesota and Iowa but mostly he worked with heavy
equipment.

was purchased new by Ed’s
grandfather, and now Steve is the
fourth generation for the tractor.
Steve joked that he is still learning
how to start the tractor, learning
just the right technique to use the
crank start.
Although this particular HartParr is no longer used in the fields
or on the farm, that is something it
was still doing well into these later
years. Now the only work it gets
is when Steve drives it in various
parades.
The Hart-Parr company started
in the late 1800s, and it eventually
became the Oliver Company.
Ed commenting on the history
of the Hart-Parr company said
that in 1901 the company had an
assembly line where they started
putting the tractors together and
the Number 1 tractor off the line
was sold to a farmer in Iowa who
ran it for 16 years. This same
tractor is now in the Smithsonian
Museum.
Hart-Parr
had
the
first
successful fuel-burning tractor on
the market and in fact there wasn’t
even a name called tractor at the
time because most of the engines
were steam powered and they were
called traction engines and HartParr decided to shorten this down
to tractor.
Ed said that most of the tractors
they have restored were purchased
at auctions or that they heard were
available through the grapevine.
“One thing is you can’t go out
and pay a lot of money for them,”
Ed said. “You can’t pay more than
a junk price because by the time

In his years in agriculture, Chris
Thurk of Lakefield has seen some
major changes taking place in the
industry.
The son of a dairy farmer,

and new agronomist at FCA Coop in Jackson County, Thurk says
one of the most notable changes
that has taken place in production
agriculture over the past two to
three years has been in the area of
input costs to the farmer.
“They have just about tripled in
that time frame,” he said.
But changes in technology
have had a huge effect on what he
does as a Lakefield-Okabena area
agronomist too.
“Technology has affected yield
mapping and seed placement
as well as soil sampling,” Thurk
said. “Whether it is fertility
management by soil grids or
matching hybrid seed to soils —
proper seed placement — through
sampling, technology has affected
this industry.”

“There are no boundaries or
territories in this business anymore.
It isn’t uncommon for us to run 40
to 50 miles with our equipment,” he
said. “So we work to see that all our
current customers’ needs are being

start to grow the business. I’ve only
been here about two months and
things are going very well with my

Thurk, originally from the
Alexandria
area,
attended
Osakis High School and, after
graduating there, spent two years
at Alexandria’s community college
where he completed his training in
diesel mechanics.
“After I finished my two years
of training for diesel mechanics, I
worked at an implement dealership
in the Alexandria area,” Thurk said.
“I grew up on a dairy farm that is
still operated by my family. For the
past eight years I’ve worked for New
Vision Co-op in Worthington.”
At New Vision Co-op, Thurk
started out as a mechanic and
custom applicator.
“I did mechanical work first
and then ran a sprayer,” he said.
“I worked my way into sales and
agronomy.”
Thurk came to FCA in Lakefield
in mid-September.
“As an agronomist here I sell
feed and fertilizer,” he said. “I
do crop consulting, field testing,
fertilizer management and seed
placement for our customers. I
especially enjoy the customer
contact and the ongoing learning
of this job. It never gets real
comfortable because this industry
is always changing.”

Depending on the tractor, parts
can be hard to come by.
“It gets pretty tough to find
parts sometimes but it is getting
better though,” Ed said. “You go
back say ten, fifteen years ago,
parts were darn hard to find for
old tractors. But it is easier now
than then because you have a lot
of people making reproduction
parts.”
He mentioned that besides
being able to get reproduction
parts there are a lot of people
buying these old tractors and
parting them out like a guy he used
to work with in southern Iowa that
at one time had about 150 old
tractors. You can get connections
through them to find used parts.
“Most of the time you can find
the parts. It takes some looking
and maybe a lot of driving to get
them,” Ed said.
Steve mentioned that back
when he bought his Oliver OC3

and if you found one it could be

with what I’m doing here. Everybody’s after a common
goal and everybody is looking in the same direction and
that helps make the job easier.”
And Thurk likes working closer to home.
“I did a lot of driving in the eight years I worked at
Worthington,” he said. “It is a lot nicer working in the
town where I live. It makes it feel normal to live right
down the street. The hours are long and varied during
the spring, summer and fall, so it is tough to make plans
for family time, but when the snow comes my hours
become more normal. Besides that, being close to
home, I can get to our kids’ school activities easily when
I need to.”
Thurk and his wife, Jodi, who runs a day-care center
in their home, have four children. “Our oldest is Meagan,
who is 16. Then there is Lindsey, who is 15; Brandon,
who is 13; and Jeremy, who is 10 years old,” he said.
“Meagan, my dad, my sister and her husband and I all
like to compete in tractor pulls. My dad and I also do
tractor restoration.”
FCA Co-op agronomist Chris Thurk works out of the Lakefield
office and covers the Lakefield-Okabena territory. He is an
Alexandria native and lives in Lakefield with his family.

When talking about prices
of parts for the old tractors Ed
mentioned that for an average
engine a manifold could cost you,
for any kind of old tractor, around
$300 to $1,000.
“But if you need ‘em, you need
‘em, you could be glad you get
‘em,” Ed said.
While there are many old tractors
out there the high price of iron this
past year has been a detriment to
restorers and collectors. The high
price has led to farm groves being
cleaned out of not only old tractors
but also old implements as well.
“The high price of iron was not
good for the old stuff,” Ed said.
“The same thing happened during
World War II. The iron price went
up during the war to $60/ton which
was a lot of money in that era and
time. What people weren’t using
they sold and it has happened
again.”
Ed mentioned that in recent
years because there are so many
restored and redone tractors, the
country is full of them, that another
aspect associated with this that
are selling is the machinery and
especially the attachments that
belong to these old tractors such
as cultivators and planters.
“This is the kind of stuff that is
starting to bring money now. They
are picking up in price better than
tractors are,” Ed said. “Before they
were cutting them up and selling
them for scrap iron.”
He gave an example of an Oliver
corn planter Steve had picked up
at an auction in Iowa for $35. Steve
cleaned it up and sold it to a friend
of his dad’s for $200 who then in
turn took it to a consignment sale
and sold it for $400.
“Five years ago it was junk. I
mean you couldn’t get the price of

iron for it,” Ed said as he laughed.
“But that is what is happening to
machinery now. They are picking
up price better than the tractors
are.”
As to why people buy and
restore old tractors Ed mentioned
that for some the tractor they get is
one they grew up with on the farm
or something similar.
He mentioned again that he
tends to lean towards the Oliver
side because the Hart-Parr was
the forerunner to Oliver and he
grew up on the farm with HartParrs and Olivers. He said that
when he started farming they
ran mostly Olivers although they
did have some John Deeres and
Internationals.
“The Oliver was always kind
of the lead tractor,” Ed said.
“Because the six-cylinder engine
was a smooth running engine,
the hydraulics and PTO, and they
were ahead of other brands with
all that stuff. They were also pretty
reasonable on fuel compared to
the other ones. So that is why
I always kind of leaned toward
them.”
Many who restore old tractors
stick with only one brand of tractor
whether it is an Oliver, a John
Deere or one of the other brands.
“I have restored every brand you
can think of but I’m getting pretty
old for that,” Ed said chuckling.
“It’s a lot of work but I like cleaning
them up and all that.”
He mentioned one thing you
need if you are going to restore
old tractors and that being a good
cutting torch. Some of the bolts
get rusted pretty tight.
One trick to restoring the
tractors is making sure you get
enough coats of paint when you
repaint them. The more coats
of paint the shiner the paint job
becomes.
Ed said that this trick is
something it took many years to
find out. It was something that
nobody would tell him.
Besides restoring some of his
own tractors Steve likes to drive
them in parades. “Instead of
watching the parade I like to be in
them,” Steve said.
According to Ed it generally
takes about a year per tractor to
restore them. This depends on the
condition of the tractor though.
He said that generally he figures
it takes about a year to complete a
restoration.

Steve mentioned that now with
the Internet they are able to find
information about a particular
tractor. Ed added that one trick to
find the color is find an area that
has a lot of grease and when you
remove that the original color has
most likely been preserved.
Ed mentioned that you need to
be careful because in some cases
one manufacturer made models
for different companies and the
paint scheme might be different.
An example he gave was a Co-op
tractor that was sold under the
Co-op name but manufactured by
Oliver in Charles City, Iowa. The
nameplate on the tractor also said
Oliver but the name on the tractor
was Co-op.
There are many things that
Ed and Steve have learned when
restoring old tractors including
not only how to do the work but
also the history of the tractor and
company.
Both show no signs of stopping
restoring old tractors because they
are working on two tractors right
now. One is a 1928 McCormickDeering 1020 and the other an
Oliver Super 88.

“If you hook up a baler, it knows you’ve got a baler
on and adjusts accordingly,” Henderson said. “It’s the
way of the future.”
The electronic communication of data allows
the tractor, its guidance system and any ISOBUScompliant implement to instantly and automatically
transfer data that can help with diagnosing problems,
analyzing information and mapping data.
The Cs also have updated styling features, most
notably the redesigned field lights and a brand new
digital dash monitor to control every function of the
tractor and its attached equipment.
For those reasons, promotional literature from
AGCO likens the series’ letter C to words like comfort,
convenience and control.
“The reason people like track tractors is because
they get good flotation, a smooth ride and they’re able
to get power efficiently to the ground,” Henderson
said. “With the horsepower required to pull some of
these machines, you can put together a configuration
with narrower belts and still get the horsepower to
the ground.”
With their Cat engines, the tractors also maintain
their status as the highest-horsepower commercial
tractors in the world, a tradition the company
has built through facing some of agriculture and
construction’s toughest conditions.
“The product we have the most success with are
track tractors,” Henderson said. “They perform well,
hold their value very well and are reliable.”
Just down the street from AGCO and Ziegler in
Jackson, FCA Co-op has been using the features
of a Challenger B series tractor and other brands,
along with guidance technology, to pull a strip-tilling
machine and lay down dry fertilizer and anhydrous
ammonia all in the same pass through the field.
To meet the rising demand for the track tractors
and other new AGCO products with Cat components,
Jackson’s Ziegler site also nearly quadrupled the size
of its shop recently. Now, 17 climate-controlled bays
are available for pre-configuration of new tractors,
repairs and cleaning.
“Overall, it’s an exciting time for Ziegler, with a
new facility and a new product coming,” Henderson
said.

Grant County Implement Company of Milbank, SD is excited to announce the acquisition of Eugene Beckman and Sons of Brookings and Garretson. This creates a new
family of John Deere Dealerships in Eastern South Dakota operating as Schuneman Equipment Company.
