Dear Members,
Hope your ’05 calf crop is on the ground and
you are as excited as we are at H & H. The cattle
market we are experiencing is like none other.
Simmental genetics are helping the commercial
cattleman put more money in his pocket than ever
before. We have to play this market as smartly as
possible to maximize the most we can as seedstock producers. We have to market our bulls and
replacement females better than we ever have. As
an association, we have stumbled in not promoting our products to fellow cattlemen. We do have
major changes planned. We must have your input
in implementing these changes; we must refocus
our efforts as a breed to selling quality seedstock
and reconnect with the commercial cattleman. We
must be more than a “show heifer” state. Again, we
need to come together, strategize and “re-invent”
ourselves. Our annual meeting is a “must attend”
event of this year. It will be informative, fun and
hopefully reignite friendships.
We have some major events involving two great
members. First, Sam Smith of Hilltop Simmentals
was awarded the prestigious “Golden Herdbook
Award.” Sam and his family have been great supporters of the OSSA and I’m proud to call him a
friend. Bobby Willis was elected one of the South
Central trustees by his fellow members to the ASA
board. Congratulations Bobby, we look forward to
you representing us in Bozeman.
Please mark your calendar for the annual meeting and be a part of the fun.
Sincerely,
Kurt Hamburger
President

OSSA Junior of the Year
S
immentals have
played a very
important role in
the life of the 2004 Junior
of the Year recipient. Nicki
Jaques, Hinton, Oklahoma,
was born into a strong
Simmental background
that had been established
by her father Jon in 1977.
It was only natural to follow the course that had
already been set before
her. In 1990, Nicki’s first
OSSA Junior of the Year
cow was a fullblood that
Nicki Jaques
produced a heifer calf,
which she showed at the young age of five. That was also the same year that she
joined the OJSSA and was elected S.W. District Representative at the annual meeting. Nicki continued to follow “big sister” Dusty and their mother Carolyn around
to many shows and events, but was exhibiting sheep from her own flock of sixty
head. At age eleven Nicki took a huge leap. She sold her entire flock of registered Southdown and Shropshire sheep to purchase a donor prospect from H&H
Simmentals. That heifer was “Red Dawn.” She was the cornerstone of Nicki’s herd.
According to ASA data, Nicki has registered 115 head of Simmentals from 1990 to
the present date.
Nicki has held OJSSA offices and titles such as District Representative, Secretary,
Vice-President, President, Princess and Queen. She has also been a part of many
other organizations including Oklahoma Junior Cattleman’s Association, Oklahoma
Club Calf Association, American Quarter Horse Association, and the Oklahoma
FFA Organization. Nicki’s success as a livestock judge with the Hinton FFA Chapter
placed her as fifth overall individual at the National FFA Livestock Judging
Contest her senior year. That award was followed by an invitation to judge at the
International Livestock Tour that began in Scotland and finished in Germany where
she was awarded second high individual in the final international rankings. Nicki
has won numerous honors in many organizations. Some of the more outstanding
ones are, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Oklahoma State FFA
Non-Traditional Student (for her work in embryo transfer), Connors State College
livestock judging scholarship and American Junior Simmental Association Bronze
and Silver Awards.
Connors State College, Warner, Oklahoma, is the present home of Nicki. She is
active on the livestock judging team and plans to finish her college career with a
major in Animal Science. Nicki wants to thank the Oklahoma Simmental/Simbrah
Association for this honor along with its support throughout her years as a junior
member.

surprises and several decisions
OSSA Family of the Year
that would shape this family’s life.
Steven, Brenda & Littleton Fowler
October 1991 was a turning
point in the orderly life of the Fowler family. Litt, Brenda, Shanda, and Steven had
just moved from Oklahoma City and were no longer big city folks. They were now
country dwellers in the middle of Newcastle, a community with a very active 4-H and
FFA. Little did the Fowlers know how quickly this move would alter and change the
direction of their lives and the surprises those changes would bring.
Shanda wasted no time jumping into the FFA activities showing pigs and competing
in public speaking. Soon she had convinced her mom to co-sign a loan for an Angus
heifer. She told her daddy “the heifer would be done showing at the same time she
would leave for college.” Two years later Shanda went to college, and the heifer stayed
and became the cornerstone of the Fowler’s crossbreeding program.
Steven soon gave up band and basketball, tried his hand at showing pigs but really
preferred to work in the cattle barn. Terry Garvin, a local Simmental breeder, bought
an orphan calf and called to ask if Steven wanted to buy it as a possible show heifer.
Litt would get a big surprise when he came home from work to find Brenda and the
kids in the back yard trying to decide where and how they could fit another heifer in
the small fenced area. Two months later that long-legged boy and that long-legged
calf, Tawanda, nervously walked into the ring of the Newcastle Fall Livestock Show. The
Fowlers were now in the purebred Simmental business. Steven would soon purchase
another heifer from Terry Garvin and Litt would extend the fence line once again.
Eventually the Fowler family discovered the OSSA, and became a willing and active
member. They have participated in several Regionals, National Classics, attended
annual meetings and helped with organization functions in any way they were needed.
Steven served one term as president of the OJSSA, was the 1999 OJSSA Junior of
the Year and obtained the AJSA Silver Merit award. He now works as a Lecturer at
Oklahoma State University and is currently serving on the OSSA Board of Directors.
Shanda is married and is a practicing veterinarian in Oklahoma City. Brenda and Litt
now manage the Fowler’s small herd of Simmental and Simmental-influenced cattle.

History of the Breed
T
he Simmental is among the
oldest and most widely distributed of all breeds of cattle in
the world. Although the first official
herdbook was established in the Swiss
Canton of Berne in 1806, there is evidence of large, productive "red and
white" cattle being found much earlier
in ecclesiastical and secular property
records of Western Switzerland. Those
red and white animals were highly
sought because of their "rapid growth
development; outstanding production
of milk, butter and cheese; and for their
use as draft animals." They were known
for their gentle nature, impressive stature and excellent dairy qualities.
As early as 1785, the Swiss Parliament
limited exports because of a shortage of cattle to meet their own needs.
The Swiss "Red and White Spotted
Simmental Cattle Association" was
formed in 1890.
Since its origin in Switzerland, the
breed has spread to all six continents.
Total numbers are estimated between
40 and 60 million Simmental cattle
worldwide, with more than half in
Europe. The worldwide spread was
gradual until the late 1960s. Records
show that a few animals were exported
to Italy as early as the 1400s. During the
19th century, Simmental were distributed through most of Eastern Europe, the
Balkans and Russia, ultimately reaching
South Africa in 1895. Guatemala imported the first Simmental cattle into the
Western Hemisphere in 1897, with Brazil
following in 1918 and Argentina in 1922.
There are unsubstantiated reports
from a variety of sources indicating
Simmental cattle arrived in the United
States before the turn of the century.
Simmental were reported as early as
1887 in Illinois, according to one source;
in 1895 in New Jersey; and in New York
OSSA | 27
and New Mexico around the 1916-1920
period. An ad in an 1896 issue of the
Breeder's Gazette, published in Chicago,
also made reference to "Simmenthal"
cattle. Apparently, those early imports
did not capture the imagination of the
American cattleman and the Simmental
influence died quietly away until they
were reintroduced in the late 1960s.
The breed made its most recent
appearance in North America when a
Canadian, Travers Smith, imported the
famed bull "Parisien" from France in
1967. Semen was introduced into the
United States that same year, with the
first half-blood Simmental calf born
at Geyser, MT, in February, 1968. The
American Simmental Association was
formed in October, 1968. Simmental
spread to Britain, Ireland and Norway
in 1970 and to Sweden and other
Northern European countries shortly
thereafter. The first purebred bull was
imported into the United States in
1971 and Australia received Simmental
semen and live animals in 1972. The
World Simmental Federation (WSF)
was formed in Zagreb, Yugoslavia in
1974. The purpose of the WSF was to
unify Simmental breeders around the
world and provide them with a vehicle
through which they could exchange
research and information and increase
the influence and importance of the
Simmental breed.
Selection in Europe was initially
for three features: milk, meat and as
draft animals. The demand for working
animals is greatly reduced today but
muscularity and high milk production
are still important to the success of
Simmental.
The breed is known by a variety
of names, including "Fleckvieh" in
Germany; "Pie Rouge", "Montbeliarde",
and "Abondance" in France; and
"Pezzata Rosa" in Italy. The Simmental
name is derived from their original loca-
28 | OSSA
tion, the Simme Valley of Switzerland.
In German, Thal or Tal means valley,
thus the name literally means "Simme
Valley".
Simmental have a number of important attributes. They are widely distributed throughout the world, implying
adaptability to varied environments and
management practices. They have continued to thrive over hundreds of years,
implying utility, functional efficiency
and productivity; and they are second in
numbers, only to Brahman, among all
breeds worldwide.
The American Simmental Association
(ASA) was founded by a contingent of
breeders who came from other breed
backgrounds and shared a common
goal of establishing a breed base on
sound, performance principles. Thus,
in its 30+ years of existence, ASA has
often been in the forefront of beef
industry innovation and progress. In
1971, ASA published the first beef breed
sire summary, and since that time has:
1) initiated a cow recognition program;
2) developed Simbrah, a heat tolerant,
insect-resistant breed combining the
genetics of Simmental and Brahman; 3)
developed the first multi-breed EPDs;
4) been a leader in incorporating performance data into the show ring; and, 5)
more recently, established the industry
standard for proving carcass merit. Most
other breeds have followed the leadership of ASA.
The growth of Simmental cattle in
North America is really a reflection
of what has already occurred in most
agricultural countries of the world. It
appears certain that Simmental will
continue to play an important role in
the future of the American beef producer.

Most success stories begin with a “DREAM”. Most
successful bulls have a proven, phenomenal dam to his
credit. What a Dream’s dam has already proven her ability
in producing functional, marketable offspring regardless of
the sire. She has the “look” great cows should have. What
a Dream has the style, phenotype, pedigree and EPDs to
work in every cowherd! He has the thickest, squarest rump
of any purebred bull I’ve seen. His sire was the sire of
Champions and high sellers at the 2005 Denver.
