Welcome • Bienvenue • Nyob zoo • ¡Bienvenidos! • Dobro Došli • May, 2016 • nghênh Graduation Edition Congratulations Class of 2016! INSIDE: Reshaping Opportunities for Success: 2015-2020 Ranger U: College credit close to home Spanish Immersion comes full circle Come find us on the web, at www.flaschools.org © Forest Lake Area Schools, 2016 District News: New opportunities for learning Ranger U provides college credits close to home When the members of the class of 2016 receive their high school diplomas in June, many of them will have already taken the first steps toward earning a college degree. While they were still in high school, these students earned college credit through the district’s Ranger U program. To address the needs of older high school students who are ready to S C H O O L 2 move up to college-level work, Forest Lake Area High School created a program that provides college classes within the school. The program allows students to earn post-secondary credits for their college transcript without leaving high school early. They can stay at school with their peers, participate in high school activities and sports, and still get a head start on a college education. Ranger U offers several of the traditional Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which allow students to learn from college-level curriculum so they can prepare for and pass AP exams to receive college credit. It also includes College in Schools (CIS) courses, which are taught through cooperative agreement with local colleges and universities, like the University of Minnesota. Julie Corcoran (651) 324-8009 [email protected] B O A R D Dan Kieger (651) 276-8571 [email protected] Karen Morehead (651) 464-3577 [email protected] Luke Odegaard (651) 375-5889 [email protected] Jill Olson (651) 785-9374 [email protected] Robert Rapheal (651) 433-5847 [email protected] Gail Theisen (651) 592-6901 [email protected] The selection of classes includes high-level academic courses in the traditional subjects like science and math, along with a variety of other technical and vocational courses such as Landscape Design and Construction, Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced Public Speaking and Marketing. One of the biggest benefits of Ranger U, for students and families, is that its classes are completely free. There is no tuition, books or room and board for parents and students to pay. The free college classes, along with the many other benefits of a high-level education within their high school setting prompts hundreds of students at each year to take advantage of Ranger U and get a jump start on their college or career education. Local Partnerships: Joining together as a community Solar energy partnership creates new opportunities Forest Lake Area Schools, through a partnership with Xcel Energy and Apex Efficiency Solutions, has added solar power to many of its buildings. This winter, 6300 solar panels were installed on rooftops and ground mounts at several sites around the school district. The solar panels are predicted to bring multiple benefits to Forest Lake Area Schools. The energy savings from solar power is to save the district approximately $200,000 per year. “With more than $200,000 in annual savings from this project, we are able to save on energy costs and reinvest those dollars in classroom teachers,” said Larry Martini, director of business services for Forest Lake Area Schools. “This is really exciting because the kids are the ultimate beneficiaries here.” The solar panels will create 2.4 million kWh of renewable energy each year which will eliminate more than 1,265 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of taking more than 240 cars off the road. In addition to the cost and energy savings, solar panels on the high school will provide a unique learning opportunity for students. Curriculum connections are currently being developed to integrate the on-site solar energy source into science and math classes. Save the date for upcoming partner events TASTE! On March 31, Forest Lake Area Schools held a public open house to provide an opportunity for members of the public to view plans, learn about project details and provide feedback. Architects and engineers were on hand to answer questions, and charts and drawings were on display from the project’s 11 sites throughout the district. Project update: The Reshaping Opportunities for Success: 20152020 project is continuing on schedule. Detailed design and planning work is nearing completion, incorporating input from the public and school staff. Architects and project managers have been meeting for the past several months with staff from each building site to ensure that the final designs address the educational needs of teachers and students now and for many years to come. More information about the project, including detailed plans for each site, can be found on the district’s website at www.flaschools.com. These students, who were the first group to begin Spanish immersion in the district, have been the trailblazers for a program that has grown along with them, from their first day of immersion in first grade through this year’s 6th grade classes. Next year, these students will have the opportunity to continue their immersion education in junior high. “For several years, we have had a junior-high level Spanish Immersion program to support incoming students from other elementary immersion programs,” said Linda Madsen, Superintendent of Forest Lake Area Schools. “It’s exciting that next year, our own immersion students will be ready to join that program.” At the junior high and high school level, several Spanish immersion classes are available in subject like Science, Social Studies and Spanish (including reading, writing, culture and grammar). For elementary students, Forest Lake Area Schools offers a “partial-immersion” program, where students are taught math and science in Spanish, and all other subjects in English. Information about Spanish immersion is also available on the district’s website at www.flaschools.org. Community Ed offers new preschool options Forest Lake Area Schools Community Education Early Childhood Family Program is adding some new options next fall to their slate of offerings. Their current Little Ranger Preschool Program offers both the traditional child-only classes and classes with a parent component. To help meet the needs of more families, the district will be offering three new options: an evening preschool class, a new location at Columbus Elementary, and a new class for grandparents as caregivers. The last option was created to support grandparents who have become caregivers of their grandchildren. The new Grandparents as 6 Caregivers class will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Central Learning Center. The class is for children from three to five years old. Grandparents will attend every other Monday. The new Columbus Elementary preschool location is for ages 4 and 5 and has class Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Parents will attend one Wednesday per month. The new evening preschool class will be offered for children ages three through five on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Central Learning Center. Parents will attend every other Tuesday. Registration is now available for the 2016-2017 school year. To register or for more information visit www.flaschools.org/ce or call 651-982-8349.
