Interview with Kirk Whiting, CGCS Superintendent, Sakonnet Golf Club
By Nicholas Burchard, Editor
Please briefly describe an overview of the
upcoming Educational Seminar that the RIGCSA
is holding on November 12th at the Hotel
Providence.
The RIGCSA is hosting "A Luncheon with the Masters", and that is just what it is. We have three of the
finest individuals speaking on and about their expertise as it relates to golf. Andy Drohen with Agrium
has a keen sense of the fertilizer business as it relates to the buyer, user and the golf course. Gil
Hanse has taken the lead in many designs and improvements on golf
courses from coast to coast and
abroad. His insight is very unique and
fosters many traits of the old masters
of design. And finally, Brad Faxon
sees the game of golf from a different
perspective. He's a master of the PGA
and has recently been collaborating
with Gil Hanse.
As Education Chair, you have created a program
in which Superintendents and Club Officials can
spend a day away from the course. What do you
hope the biggest benefits of this will be?
Being one of the Superintendent elders, I have had
the opportunity to see what works over time. Communication is the one element that is key on every
level. We communicate with our maintenance staff,
the pro shop, the restaurant, and the office. Due to
our hours of operation and scheduling the communication between Club Officials and Superintendents is missed. Being away
from the course in a beautiful Downtown Providence Hotel gives all parties
involved a great benefit to see one another for the professionals that we are.
I look forward to seeing and meeting all
of you on the 12th of November.
What can superintendents and club
officials hope to gain by attending
this session?
Right from the start I would expect
Kirk Whiting, CGCS
those attending to be entertained.
Given the term "educational opportunity" everyone should walk away with an enhanced
understanding of the many different facets of the golf
industry. Last but not least, meeting new people and
making friends is such an important networking tool.

President’s Message
As we wind down, yet
another year, I‟d like to
take some time to thank
the many members of our
association who have
given so much of their
time in helping us grow
and succeed in 2008.
First, the members of the Board of Directors of RIGCSA for the endless hours
they put in this year. I feel we have accomplished quite a bit and every Board
Member has contributed in one way or
another. From the monthly meetings,
golf, education and social events to the
new web-newsletter format, 2008 has
been a very progressive year.
Thank you to all members who offered up their facility for a monthly meeting. I can‟t express how important it is to
have members come forward like they do
year in and year out. We hope that all
members look and see if they can host a
meeting sometime in the next couple of
years. Next, I would like to thank all our
members who have supported these
monthly meetings, social and education
events so far and hope everyone will
consider attending the many events coming up through the end of the year. We
have a fantastic event scheduled for November 12th at the Hotel Providence.
This will be a good communication tool
for all of us in working along side with our
club officials. What an opportunity to
showcase how professional and committed we are in what we do every day.
I must say that the Scholarship and
Research Tournament at The Shelter
Harbor Club on October 15th could not
have been better. Congratulations to
Richard Lombardi and his committee for
yet another outstanding day. Thank you
to all the volunteers that continue to help
make this an outstanding event. The staff
at Shelter Harbor along with the food and
service was first rate. We even got a
break with the weather making for an
even more enjoyable day.
As every Superintendent Member
now knows, the new and quite improved
Caranci Survey is now available to be
filled out. I encourage everyone to get
involved and fill out the survey prior to
the due date. This is a very important
tool that every one of us will benefit from.
Thank you to the survey committee led
by Edward Walsh, CGCS; Eric McPherson, CGCS and Stephen Tibbels, CGCS.
Many thanks to Stephanie McPherson
and Julie Heston for all the hard work
they put in to presenting a first class survey.
And finally, I can‟t say enough about
our Chapter Executive Julie Heston and
the quality work she puts in for every one
of us. Julie continues to show her commitment to the RIGCSA each year by
attending events through the GCSAA.
We have all benefited from Julie‟s efforts
and we thank her for that.
Hope to see everyone very soon.
All the best,
Paul J. Jamrog

26th Annual Scholarship and Research Tournament
is Once Again a Success
The Scholarship and Research Committee sponsored another successful event with the 26th Annual
Scholarship & Research Tournament held at Shelter
Harbor Golf Club on October 15th.
Organizing this event requires dedication and
hard work of the committee members and staff early
in the year to achieve rewarding results. Recognition goes out to the entire S&R Committee. The
committee also extends a special thank you to Julie
Heston for her assistance, dedication and strong
administrative support.
To our annual sponsors, who play a key role in
the tournament‟s success, the committee extends its
gratitude. Please see the full list of sponsors for this
event on the following pages.
Special recognition is also extended to Ed
Walsh, CGCS and the entire team at Shelter Harbor
Golf Club. The superb conditions of the course and
the facility coupled with excellent service provided
by the staff greatly contributed to the day‟s success.
In closing, the unconditional support and efforts
of all participants will allow the Scholarship & Research Tournament to remain a key event representing the RIGCSA‟s strong commitment to educational
enhancement.
Be certain to mark your calendars for our next
event to be held in October 2009 at Metacomet
Country Club where Paul Jamrog will be our host for
day.

Color Screening of Velvet Bentgrass
Cynthia Percivalle and Dr. Rebecca Nelson Brown,
University of Rhode Island Turfgrass Research
Program
Purpose
The use of velvet bentgrass (Arostis canina) has been
increasing as a lower input turfgrass. Velvet‟s qualities
make this bentgrass an excellent candidate for golf
course putting greens. However, this lighter color can
lead to over-application of nitrogen, which leads in turn to
thatch buildup and copperspot outbreaks (Brilman 2003).
planted (as three replications) at the University of Rhode
Island Turf Research Facility in Kingston.
Ratings of color will be made on the cloned sets in the
field at the URI Turf Research Facility. The sets will be
planted in a randomized block with three replications in a
mowed space planting, mowed at fairway height and surrounded by an existing stand of chewings fescue (to promote competition and weed suppression). Color will be
measured using digital photography under controlled light
and digital image analysis (Karcher and Richardson,
2003). Color reference standards for plant tissue will be
used as a control.
The identification of genotypes having dark green color
will enable the development of improved cultivars and
enhance the aesthetics of this environmentally friendly
grass. This grass will not only have a more lush green
color, but will do so without the need of over fertilization,
therefore reducing thatch build up.
Time Frame:
Methods:
Location:
Velvet bentgrass samples have been obtained by collecting vegetative plugs from older golf courses in New England. The plugs were allowed to grow in the greenhouse
until they could be split into tillers that are genetic individuals. The individuals are given a number, then grown
and divided further until we have many ramets from the
original genetic individual. Three sets of clones will be
The University of Rhode Island‟s Turfgrass Research
Farm in Kingston, Rhode Island.
The field has been planted in May of 2008, and will grow
and continue to be maintained until fall of 2008 when it
will be photographed. Data analysis will take place during
the winter of 2008-09.
Budget:
The University of Rhode Island Turfgrass Research Program, through a USGA funded project, will provide all
supplies.

$2,500 from the Noel Jackson
Scholarship will be used to pay for
the time put into the evaluation
study. This covers one graduate
student at $18.00 per hour for 5
hours per week for 27 weeks.
Significance:
The purpose will be to compare
different strains of velvet to find
those that require average fertilizer
application and still have an aesthetically appealing dark green
color. The USGA funded project
will be a collaborative project including a Copperspot resistance
screening using the same clones
as the color study. My research is
also anticipated to contribute to a
larger plant breeding research

RIGA Update
It‟s hard to believe another golf season is coming to
an end. I can‟t thank everyone enough for all the
help and dedication you your crew give to the RIGA
when we conduct an event at your club. A special
thanks to Drew Cummins and his guys at Agawam
Hunt for fantastic playing condition at the Amateur
Championship this summer.
Hope you all survived the interesting season of
changing weather conditions and I‟m sure every
club has plenty of extra water for the spring.
Enjoy the off season, relax a little and gear up for
next year. Don‟t be afraid to call me if you need
help cutting down more trees.
Regards,
Bob Ward
Executive Director

project that is expected to result in a well-characterized
collection of velvet bentgrass accessions that can be
maintained by the National Plant Germplasm System.
The contribution will help to preserve genetic resources
present in the historic golf courses of New England.
Cynthia Percivalle is the
2008 recipient of the Noel
Jackson Research Grant. She is
a candidate for a master‟s degree
at the University of Rhode Island
and her research has been in turf
disease, more specifically copper
spot resistance with velvet bentgrasses. In coordination with
disease resistance, she would like
to also screen her selected velvet
strains for a more aesthetically
appealing color to promote velvet‟s use as a greens grade
grass. She feels this would be a useful coordination with
disease resistance in search of a more beneficial cultivar
for golf course use.

GCSAA UPDATE
Build a house. Create a Future
2009 Golf Industry Show Volunteer Habitat for
Humanity Project
If you would like to give something back to the
people of New Orleans, here‟s your chance to make
a big difference. The partnering associations of the
Golf Industry Show are teaming up with Habitat for
Humanity to host a series of special work days before the trade show opens to help build homes in
some of New Orleans‟ most devastated areas. No
experience is necessary, and all the equipment and
supplies are provided. Your time and energy can
help make the dreams come true for several families
in a big way.
The work days will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 3,
and Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
All volunteers will be placed in teams of 15 to work
on homes within a particular area. The Golf Industry
Show will provide transportation from the New Orleans Morial Convention Center, lunch at the work
sites, and plenty of outdoor necessities such as water and sunscreen. Project t-shirts will be provided to
show your team spirit and build camaraderie with
your peers.
If you‟d like to participate in this first-ever volunteer project, you can sign up through any of the education conferences presented by GCSAA, NGCOA
or CMAA. Participation requires a $25 registration
fee.

Managing Environmental Stress: Reducing Winter Injury to Golf Course Greens
Thursday, October 30, 2008
1:15 – 4:30 p.m.
University of Massachusetts,
Amherst, Campus Center
Turf stress and damage from winter injury are pressing
issues for golf turf in New England, particularly as superintendents and crews are continually challenged to provide pristine playing conditions. Diligent research, however, has begun to hone in on concepts and trends that
may help to mitigate winter damage to golf course turf in
the future. Innovative superintendents continue to try new
and different strategies for reducing potential for winter
injury.
This seminar will cover what we know about winter injury
causes and prevention, preparing greens for the winter,
dealing with cold weather diseases, and identifying, predicting and recovering from winter injury damage. An
Surf ‘n’ Turf
open discussion amongst speakers and participants will
be included. The afternoon will conclude with an optional
tour of cold injury research laboratories on campus.
Presenters include: Dr. Michelle DaCosta, UMass Turf
Physiologist, Dr. Geunhwa Jung, UMass Turf Pathologist,
Mr. Jim Skorulski, USGA Agronomist and Mr. Chris Frielinghaus, CGCS, Superintendent at Glens Falls Country
Club in Queensbury, NY.
Two pesticide recertification contact hours will be available for all New England states for category 37 (turf) and
category 00, Licensed Applicator. GCSAA Education
Points have been requested. Campus Center parking
vouchers will be provided to attendees.
