Letter from David
This year’s Member Guest had 168 players & was one of
the best events in recent memory. A big thanks to the
tournament sponsors & committee. Everyone had a great
time & we’re looking forward to next year!
I also want to thank the golf staff, maintenance staff &
clubhouse staff for going above and beyond to make this
event such a success. The golf course looked great thanks
to the hard work of our Golf & Grounds Committee,
Willie & his staff. Thank you!
Please mark your calendar for the MGA Match Play
Championship July 15-17. The sign-up sheet will be
outside the Pro shop July 1st. We also have the Junior
Club Championship scheduled for August 8 & please look
for the sign-up sheet outside Pro shop on July 15.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
to DCC’s July Birthdays!
M&M’S CORNER
Russell Pulley half-way hopped and stumbled as he tried to put on his
golf shoes at the same time that he was making his way from his car
to the DCC pro shop so that he could check in to play in the 1984 DCC
Pro Am. He was late, but fortunately the tee times were backed up,
and he had just enough time to take a driver and a 7 iron to the
practice range to warm up. Russell was a reluctant Entry to the
tournament, but a desperate Frank Jennings, the DCC golf pro, had
called the night before saying that a player had dropped out and that
a replacement was needed. On the range Russell shanked four iron
shots and topped two drivers. After all, the as assistant pro at
Grapevine Municipal Golf Course had not picked up a club in four
months. His demanding responsibilities left little time for playing.
His foursome teed off on number 10 with a gallery of two people, one
of whom was Rae Ann, his fiancée. They breathed a sigh of relief when
his tee shot was straight and long. It was the beginning of one of
Russell’s best rounds of golf. When that final group came in, there
were several low scores. One or two guys were already counting
their winnings – that is until Russell’s 63 was posted.
Russell Pulley, from Tyler, Texas, was first introduced to golf at
Briarwood CC at age 10 when his buddies simply said, “Let’s go play
some golf.” From that day on he was hooked. As a teenager, he was a
cart boy and played on golf teams at Tyler Lee HS, Stephen F. Austin
University and the University of Texas. His first professional position
was assistant pro at Hideaway Bay in East Texas where he eventually
became the head pro. Because he wanted to work in the Metroplex,
he became an assistant at Grapevine Municipal GC.
In 1984 when DCC was in need of a head pro, Russell was immediately
contacted and offered the job. Everyone remembered his outstanding
performance at the Pro-Am. He spent seventeen successful years at
DCC and left only when Grapevine offered him a new position. To
this day he is director of golf for that beautiful and busy facility.
In the late 1980’s Russell worked with Dick Rausch, a well-known
golf course architect and Merlin Tinklemeier, the course
superintendent, to design and oversee the renovation of the DCC
course. A joint venture had provided funds to reconstruct greens,
tees, and sand traps. The 15th hole was completely moved and
redesigned. It was an enormous project.
One of Russell’s favorite memories was a festive party with
refreshments, presents and lots of fun. It was a baby shower given by
the LGA in anticipation of the arrival of Russell and Rae Ann’s twin
girls, Megan and Melissa.
He also mentions his pride in seeing the development of several junior
golfers who were successful in UIL, state amateur, and AJGA events.
Some names he mentioned were Buffy Klein, Ren Budde, Brandon
Knight, Brad Ott, Jimmy Tritt and Kathy Moore.
Under Russell Pulley’s leadership, the DCC golf program continued its
growth to excellence. Thank you, Russell, for all your contributions.

Our DCC women's team earned a berth in the 2016 USTA Ft Worth
Ladies 18+ League Play Offs, for the first time in at least 20 years!
Members of the team include: Allyson Coe, Heather Hays, Lucy Huff,
Melissa Hudgens, Jodi Womble, Judy DuRoss, Sally Hughes, Patty
Lovelace, Janet Otto,Michele Langley, Jolene Elmore, Amy Culak, Amy
Bruton, Traci Larrison, co captain Marcia Pellicone & captain Barb Bent.
Matches were held at Richland Tennis Center & Ridglea Golf &
Country Club on May 20-22 weekend. We played shorthanded, as
several key singles & doubles players were away and one of our strong
line 1 doubles players fell ill, during the first match, on Friday night,
completing and winning the match, but missed the rest of the weekend
play. In spite of being compromised, our ladies rose to the challenge.
Everyone played so very well. Our serves were strong; we demonstrated
excellent court coverage; we had quick reflexes at the net, our blistering
baseline shots were on point; we were a force. We ended up tied for
first, at the end of the weekend, winning same number of matches, same
number of lines, winning more games & losing less games than Ridglea,
but, since head to head was the determining factor, and Ridglea defeated
us 3-2, in a super tie break effort, Ridglea was chosen to advance.
Our ladies are hard working, energetic, congenial, honest, positive &
demonstrate commendable sportsmanship. They are excellent
representatives of our fine club and it was a pleasure for me to captain
this team, with Marcia Pellicone.
Finally, we would like to thank our pro Rhonda Gattis. She has taught us
so much, during our weekly team drills. She is so knowledgeable and
encouraging and an excellent strategist. She spent the weekend with us,
at play offs, offering support, sorting line ups and cheering us on.
Your in Tennis, Barb Bent
