We are currently in our second week of ParentTeacher conferences. Thank you so much for taking the time from your busy schedules to attend these important meetings. Our annual Community Clean Up day on October 19 was spectacular. We made our already beautiful campus look even more beautiful. (continue on next page) Office Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Just a Reminder…… Every Wednesday is Manana or College T shirt Day Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 2 of 20 Vice Principal’s Message (continues) In addition to cleaning the grounds, our volunteers re-painted the parking lot and helped with our Aquaponics expansion. It was a great success! We passed our annual Fire Inspection on October 30 conducted by Captain Mahoe and the Firefighters from the Pearl City station. We are blessed to have such diligent teachers and Custodial staff who keep our students and campus safe. Thank you to the volunteer presenters who shared wonderful information at Career Day on October 18. The students were exposed to a variety of careers to help spark that special interest. Our annual Mass Evacuation is set for November 27. We want to ensure our students and staff practice going to a safe area so that in the event of a real threat, everyone is able to move in a safe and timely manner. We will be walking to the Manana Community Park. The Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) for science has begun for grade 4. There are a total of 3 attempts for the students. However, this year for reading and math, the Department of Education is transitioning to new standards called Common Core State Standards (CCSS). In this transition year, a “bridge” assessment will be given, using only the items common to both HSA and CCSS assessments. Students are allowed 2 attempts for this assessment. Therefore, it is important that your children are well rested, eat a healthy breakfast, and get to school on time. (continue on next page) Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 3 of 20 Vice Principal’s Message (continues) Please contact your child's teacher for more specific information. Finally, we understand how busy it can be with the holiday season around the corner, so in this time of giving thanks, please take the time and help your children understand the many things to be thankful for. Manana Parent Bulletin #4 / Page 20 of 20 November Tips on Health and Wellness... (By: Resources for Educators, a division of CCH Incorporated) Let’s Read About Food! Facing a food challenge with your child? Reading a storybook can be a wonderful way to open up a discussion and encourage your child to eat nutritious foods --- just like the characters in the book. Here are stories that can help. Picky eaters. If your child balks at trying new foods, try approaching the problem in a playful way with the classic Dr. Seuss tale Green Eggs and Ham. When Sam I Am finally tries green eggs and ham, he finds out he likes them. Or try The Monster Who Ate MY Peas (Danny Schnitzlein), where a boy who hates peas makes a deal with a monster. Too much junk food. Let your child learn about the benefits of eating a balanced diet along with Gregory the goat. In Gregory the Terrible Eater (Mitchell Sharmat), the little goat refuses to eat proper goat foods like shoes and garbage. He prefers the fruits and vegetables that his parents consider junk food. Or read about a girl who will eat only cookies in Cookie by Lisa Woomer.
