7th Annual NMMI Classic - New Mexico Military Institute
Jose Barron NMMI Athletic Director “Welcome to the seventh annual NMMI Classic Volleyball Tournament! Organized athletic competition plays a key role here at NMMI, helping to develop the physical abilities of our junior college student-athletes, who train long and hard to become faster, stronger, jump higher. But in addition to the physical realm, there is no better way to help build character and help make people successful than through competition in sports.” About AD Barron (reprinted in part from an article by Austin McNabb in the Roswell Daily Record) After being the Director of Athletic Training and the Assistant Athletic Director for 11 years, Jose Barron is taking over as the Athletic Director for the New Mexico Military Institute. Barron said the situation he’s walking into is the best it could be. “In recent years, we’ve had a lot of successful athletic programs. My job is to make sure that we get our teams what they need to stay successful and get to that next level.” Among those teams Barron mentioned were the women’s volleyball team being 10th in the nation last year and the college football team winning the El Toro Bowl. NMMI has also had other recent successes. Last year at the collegiate level, the men’s tennis team finished 16th at the NJCAA National Championships. On the high school side, almost every team qualified for post-season play, including the boys’ tennis team that won the NMAA Class A-AAA state title. New Mexico Military Institute Cadet Honor Code “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” Every cadet is obligated to support and enforce the honor system of which this code is the lynchpin. The honor code is the minimum standard for cadet behavior. The Corps of Cadets maintains the guardianship of the honor code and preservation of the ideals it represents. When you live by the code, your word is your bond, you only seek credit for what you have done, you respect others and their property (physical or intellectual), and you demand the same standard of behavior from your brother and sister cadets. The Honor Code, above all other aspects of cadet life, bonds all cadets, past, present, and future, to each other in a brother and sisterhood of trust. Barron said working in the athletic department for over a decade has allowed him to be able to take on this position. “I’ve seen the department through some very high points and some not so high. I know what has worked and I know what definitely hasn’t worked, and I know why. I have what you call an institutional perspective.” Before being hired by NMMI, the El Paso, TX native started his career at New Mexico State University and obtained his undergraduate degree. After college, Barron was hired by the Houston Astros, and served as an athletic trainer for four years. He made the move to Roswell at the end of the 1997 season, taking a job with Sprint Sports Rehabilitation, where he worked for six years. He earned his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from New Mexico Highlands University in 2010. 2014 NMMI Classic Volleyball Tournament Hello and welcome to the seventh annual NMMI Classic Volleyball Tournament!
