WHAT A GREAT YEAR IT HAS BEEN AT THE GLEN ELLYN
CHILDREN’S RESOURCE CENTER!
I have had the great privilege of taking over the leadership as Executive Director,
along with being witness to the wonderful excitement and enthusiasm of the
children, volunteers, staff, board and donors who have shared in our success this
year.
Who cannot be moved by the earnestness of the children eagerly awaiting their
tutors each day and the caring of the volunteer tutors who are there with smiles
on their faces to help our students!
Who cannot be moved by our hardworking staff that has professionally guided
the program to serve 30% more children this year, growing from 100 to 130
students!
Who cannot be moved to see the community so generously pitch in to increase
their donations this year by 107% in order to enable us to serve more children!
Who cannot be moved to know that our combined efforts helped 100% of our
students to show growth on their MAP tests and that 93% gained one or more
literacy levels!
Who cannot be moved to know that 91% of classroom teachers indicated that
students participating in GECRC completed homework more regularly than
those who didn’t attend!
Who cannot be moved to know that through the generosity of so many people,
young children who may have been more likely to show problems in achieving
academically and socially, are thriving and advancing and not being left
behind!

Thriving in Glen Ellyn – Joshep Rai
When Joshep moved to the Glen Ellyn two years ago from Nepal,
he was known as a timid boy who was struggling to learn English.
That is no longer the case! Tutors and staff have enjoyed his
increased language skills and inquisitive nature. In the past year,
he has raised his reading level from H to M and can’t get enough
learning. His tutor, Diana Nichols, says that each week he is filled
with questions and has moved from reading simple fiction to an
interest and understanding of historical non-fiction. Outside of the
classroom, he is participating in the GECRC Park District soccer
team and scored his first goal this season! Joshep hopes to continue
raising his reading level and improving his soccer skills with his
friends.
Developing as a Leader – Lwe Wah Paw
Lwe Wah Paw is 10 years old and in 5th grade. She is from the
Karen tribe of Myanmar and was born in a refugee camp in
Thailand. Her family moved here when she was five years old and
has been part of the GECRC family for the last three years. She has
grown both socially and academically, but most noticeably she has
become a leader among her peers. This year, on her own initiative,
Lwe Wah Paw launched GECRC’s leadership team, “The After
School Citizens”. With her direction and support from GECRC staff,
she and her team are planning events, voicing ideas and putting
them into action. They are finding new ways to care for others in
the afterschool program. Lwe Wah Paw says, “I want a way for kids
to be leaders at the Resource Center that help each other and also
help the Resource Center grow!”
Growing at the GECRC
Daily, we work hard to make these kids a
success both in and out of the classroom.
We can’t do it without the support of our
army of volunteers and the financial
support of our generous donors.
