Charity event marks
company’s milestone
FTER thirty years of service in the
A
North Ayrshire community Breen
Roofing chose to celebrate their anniversary by raising money for charity.
For residents who have experienced roof damage,
fallen chimneys or required roughcasting work on their
property Pat Breen, company director, and his colleagues
have been there to help.
Last Saturday the company’s milestone anniversary
was formally celebrated at a charity function with a buffet and DJ at the Lauriston Hotel. “At first I didn’t realise
how important it was to have reached 30 years and we
were planning to have a few drinks in the local pub,”
Pat said. “But after talking it over with the guys before I
knew it we were planning a big celebration and decided
to make it a charity night.
“It became an event for tradesmen, apprentices and
industry professionals we have met over the years, to
gather while raising money for a good cause. Customers
who have been using us for a great number of years, such
as St Peter’s Church, also attended and we thank them
for their support.
“Friends of colleagues have lost loved ones to cancer over the years and so I thought Macmillan Cancer
Support would be a worthy cause.”
WELL DONE: Canon McManus, Sean McLaughlin and
Billy Kirkwood congratulate Pat Breen (third right).

From apprentice
to employer . . .
at served his apprenticeP
ship as a slater roughcaster from 1972 to 1976
with John Hainey & Son
of Saltcoats before gaining his City and Guilds and
advanced City and Guilds at
ayr College.
After six years of service in the Royal
Marines Pat returned to the roofing
industry which is where is passion lay.
“I always knew I would go back into it,”
he said. “I started up as a sole trader in
February 1982 in Stevenston.” A year
later the company moved to its current
location at 6 Hill Street in Ardrossan.
The business quickly grew and the
Limited company currently employs 10
full-time employees and has recently
taken on an apprentice. Pat said being
able to employ local people is one of the
most rewarding aspects of the job and
something he is very proud of.
“For the past thirty years I have managed to keep at least five to 10 people
in employment. Three of my current
employees have been with me for 20
years and one guy has been with us for
28 years.
“We have also had 15 apprentices
going into the trade and although some
of them move on we have two boys with
us who started their apprenticeship when
they were aged 16 and they are now in
their late 30s.”
Breen Roofing offer a number of different services to residents in North Ayrshire
from major to minor roof work. They
also provide services such as roughcasting, flat roofing, property maintenance,
UPVC facia and cladding.
Pat added: “We now offer to carry out
a topseal GRP fibre glass roof system,
which provides a 25 year guarantee and
is far superior to any torch on felt flat
roofing.”
Having been in the industry for three
decades Pat said the secret to his company’s longevity is that they provide a service that people are always in need of.
“There are certain services people
can live without but roofing is important because people need to keep their
roof water tight and keep it properly
maintained to secure their property,” the
Saltcoats-born director said.
He added that there have been ups and
downs over the years but the benefit of
having been in the business for so long is
that you build a reputation and people are
able to rely on you.
“Part of business is making it through
the good times and the bad - it can be
like going up and down a roller-coaster
or spun round a Helter Skelter but you
always come out the other side.
“During the January gales there was
a lot of damage with chimneys falling
down, roof damage and problems with
gutters and so on and our phones were
ringing off the hook.
It was hard to keep up with the work
and I even had to call some guys back
from their Christmas holidays to help out.
At a busy time like that you can get a lot
of cowboys and unregistered tradesmen
taking advantage of people.
“We have built up a good reputation
and I would like to think we provide a
reliable and professional service and first
class workmanship.”
