Laconia Motorcycle
is a nationally recognized event and a cherished New Hampshire tradition. Attracting
motorcycle enthusiasts from every corner of the country. Motorcycle Week has consistently had a positive impact on
New Hampshire, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars to philanthropic efforts and millions to New
Hampshire’s economy.
Most importantly, thank you to all of the dedicated riders who return to Laconia
each year as well as those visiting for the first time. I hope you enjoy the week’s
festivities as much as I do, and please, come back to New Hampshire soon!

Welcome from the mayor of laconia . . .
Dear Fellow Motorcycle Enthusiast:
On behalf of all of the residents of the City
of Laconia, I invite you to be a part of the
oldest annual motorcycle rally in the world — Laconia
Motorcycle Week®. We are rapidly approaching the 100th
Anniversary of our rally and we’ll welcome riders to the 93rd
running from June 11 through 19, 2016.
Our state boasts the second highest level of per capita motorcycle ownership in
the nation and the history and development of the Laconia rally has certainly
played a key role in attaining that status. We also hold a natural advantage, in
that the Granite State is home to seemingly endless miles of great cruising lanes Mayor Edward J. Engler, City of Laconia
that wind through forests and around countless mountains and lakes.
During Motorcycle Week, all of those roads lead to the Weirs Beach section of our city, where Lakeside Avenue —
“ground zero”— runs right along the west shore of New Hampshire’s largest lake, spectacular Lake Winnipesaukee.
Resorts, restaurants/bars, merchants and exhibitors fill the surrounding area.
In June of each year, motorcycle lovers from around the U.S. and Canada know the place to be is Laconia. Ride to
the 2016 rally and we’re confident you’ll want to come back, again and again, as we count up to 100.
In Laconia and New Hampshire, I ride! In Laconia and New Hampshire, we ride! Please join us!
Edward J. Engler, Mayor of Laconia

LMWA and to the Rally! Mayor Engler was also the recipient of the Fritzie Baer Award in 2015!
The challenge to meet our visitors with the same kind of
support they give us, takes a year-round effort with many
businesses, organizations, and partners throughout the
Lakes Region, the State of NH, and beyond. It is through
this kind of effort that we are able to provide so many
motorcycle-related events in our rally schedule, entertainment, and vendor options that help keep our visitors coming back. Though we cannot control every element of the
rally, it is with best intentions and the truest of hopes that
when you, our visitor, arrives for the rally, that you feel
welcomed and wanted – because you are. We thank you –
our visitors, our riders, for helping to make Laconia
Motorcycle Week® a Rally that we are all proud to pass on
to our next generations.
Another ‘thank you’ is extended to the State of
New Hampshire, Governor Maggie Hassan,
and our local and state representatives. The
State of NH’s Department of Travel &
Tourism and the Joint Promotional Program
gives a large financial contribution to this Rally
through a matching-tourism grant because they recognize
that supporting the efforts of the Rally in turn, supports the
foundation and value of the State of NH. Thank you!
Year after year, Kim Lakin of Point Positive Design has
worked behind the scenes designing this Rally News, creating our national advertising campaigning, and putting up
with us all year. Our Rally News is coveted by visitors all
year-long and it’s no secret why – it’s the most valuable
resource for planning your rally trip. Thank you Kim for,
once again, enabling us to provide our visitors with the
nation’s best Motorcycle Rally News magazine!
Laconia Motorcycle Week® began in 1916 with a group of
people riding to the area to enjoy the beautiful scenery and
riding. What has evolved over the years is truly a phenomenon to behold. Thank you to all of the public works
department, public safety and law enforcement officials
who have worked tirelessly in order to ensure our residents’
and visitors’ safety. The evolution that this Rally has
undergone is tremendous but it couldn’t have happened
without all of the people and organizations involved.
To all of you – our visitors – thank you! We know that
there are hundreds of Rallies to choose from for your vacation and we thank you for picking New Hampshire. You are
the reason this Rally has been a success – because you
know that what it’s really about is the riding and the great
people you meet and ride with. ★
W
hat a year! The 93rd Anniversary of
Laconia Motorcycle Week® is here! Here’s
why we love Laconia Motorcycle Week®:
First, we carry the responsibility and legacy of
‘being the first’ – we are the oldest motorcycle rally in the
world! Second, we are located in a beautiful state with
many distinctly different features that can all be accessed in
a day’s ride: ocean, mountains, and lakes. Third, our residents and businesses love motorcyclists – we have the 2nd
highest demographic of registered motorcycles in the country! And finally, our visitors are hardy and loyal – they
come back to us year after year and have weathered the
storms – both economically and physically.
With so many ‘rallies’ popping up around the country,
keeping our visitors engaged and coming back isn’t as easy
as it used to be. Knowing what our visitors need from us
has to come directly from their mouths – so we asked
you… In the fall of 2015, the Laconia
Motorcycle Week® Association held a public
forum to ask our visitors, residents, and businesses ‘what do we need to do to meet your
needs?’ We’ve also sent out a visitor survey to
tens of thousands of riders. The response has
been powerful!
Here’s what you’ve said we need to do:
• Introduce our rally to Millennials (younger generations)
• Be more inclusive of different motorcycle brands and
riders
• Develop more events (things to do)
Here’s what we are doing:
Significantly expand our digital marketing campaign and
redesign our website to be fully optimized on any platform
(computer, phones, tablets, etc);
Organize events to specifically feature bikes that do not fit
the ‘v-twin’ label;
Work with property owners to assist them in hosting stunt
shows, flat track races, motorcycle skill events (hare races),
and national entertainment acts; and
All of this is a work in progress but it is in our hopes that
visitors and residents alike will work with us, more than
ever before to keep Laconia Motorcycle Week® as the
world class event that it is.
The Laconia Motorcycle Week® Association is a non-profit
organization with a board of directors including: The
Naswa Resort with Cynthia Makris as our President, the
Laconia Roadhouse, Half Moon Enterprises, Matt Lahey,
Esq., the Town of Meredith, South End Media, Hot
Leathers, Inc., and our rally’s hometown host and epicenter,

MSOIL is once again the Official Oil of Laconia Motorcycle Week®,
marking our seventh year supporting one of the most influential motorcycle rallies in America. With several riders among our ranks, we’re proud to help bring
this rally to life for the hundreds of thousands who attend. We’ve again brought a

roudly supporting
Laconia Motorcycle
Week® as the Official Parts Provider of the Rally for 24
years, J&P Cycles knows its rallies and knows its motorcycles! This is no surprise since they’ve been providing
customers with aftermarket motorcycle parts for over 36
years! Founder and recently inducted AMA Hall of
Famer, John Parham, established J&P Cycles back in
1979 in a one room shop with no running water, no
indoor plumbing and was heated by a wood burning
stove on the outskirts of Anamosa, Iowa. Today, J&P
Cycles is the largest aftermarket parts retailer for HarleyDavidson® motorcycles in the world. In addition, J&P
Cycles also sells parts and accessories for Cruiser and
Gold Wing motorcycles.
In those early days, J&P started out producing a small
catalog of parts available. Today, that one small catalog
has turned into one not so small catalog produced each
February for Harley-Davidson models, a handful of small
catalogs with HD parts throughout the year, a handful of
small catalogs for the Cruiser and Gold Wing market and
one decent size catalog for vintage HD models.

Tip #
Pack up. Put together a kit with tools for simple
repairs and first-aid supplies, making sure to include a
tire gauge and a spare key. Invest in good storage bags
that offer plenty of room for essentials but won’t weigh
you down. Bring a small towel to dry the dew off your
bike each morning and glass cleaner to keep your
windshield free of bugs and road grime, and don’t forget your rain suit and sunscreen.
J&P Cycles still calls the small town of Anamosa, Iowa,
home. J&P also has a presence in Florida with a large
Destination Daytona Superstore in Ormond Beach. This
facility, located just off I-95, boasts a 24,000 square foot
showroom with more than 15,000 parts inside.
Destination Daytona is a true motorcycle mecca. If you
love motorcycles, it’s a must-see!
J&P Cycles has a year-round store in Sturgis, South
Dakota. In all, J&P has two retail stores. One houses
Harley parts while the other services Cruiser customers.
The property features a city block of blacktop highway
frontage on Lazelle Street. Other manufacturers and distributors display during the rally in an outdoor exhibit
area provided by J&P Cycles.
SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS
J&P also attends various rallies across the country each
year with their mobile showroom semi. From the west
coast, east coast, southern part of the US and the north –
you can see them on the road and they’ll have a full staff
in attendance at Laconia.

we’ll have a 2005 Ultra
Classic that will be painted
Twisted Tea yellow as well
as adorned with custom pin
striping from Dave
“Letterfly” Knoderer. Twisted
fans can enter by texting to BAGGER
to #30364 and they just may be getting a one of a kind
bike!
LRN: That’s wicked sweet!
What’s this new “Bourbon
Barrel Tea” I’ve seen in
stores?
BG: The Bourbon Barrel Tea
is brewed tea with a splash of
bourbon flavor. It’s extremely
refreshing and adds a whole
new style to our brand line up.
LRN: Well, I’ll have to make
sure and try one of them.
BG: Please do because every
bottle gets me closer to retirement!
LRN: One last thing before
we wrap up; Last year you
had a four legged friend with
you…how is he doing?
BG: Tank is doing great! He
was with me at every rally and has built up quite a following; he may be the most popular dog on the rally
circuit! This year he will be with us on the 3rd annual
Mae- West Memorial Ride. Our friends at Sick Boy
Motorcycles have partnered with The New Hampshire
Humane Society for this charity fundraiser. ALL the
proceeds go to the NHHS and there are a bunch of cool
prizes for people who participate. It’s on Monday June
13 and leaves from Rally Headquarters at 10:30AM.
Tank will be there if he isn’t sleeping of course  see
you there! ★

Laconia Rally News (LRN): So, Bill - 2015 was a wild
year for Twisted Tea; what made it so memorable?
Bill Grotto: Well, our first
Rally of the year starts in
March with Daytona Bike
Week and carries us all the way
through November where we
call it a day at the Lone Star
Rally in Galveston, Texas.
Sandwiched in between those
months we do our best to
attend as many motorcycle rallies and events as we can.
Thanks to our fans - Twisted
Tea became the 2015 #1 selling
FMB in convenience stores
nationally. So a great big
THANK YOU to our fans for
that!
LRN: You’ve got a great line
up of motorcycles in the
Twisted Tea fleet and I noticed
that one of them is missing??
BG: Jenn, you are very observant! The good news is
one of the bikes didn’t get stolen or lost in a late night
poker game…In 2015, we had a sweepstakes to win the
Twisted Tea Bagger- which was a 1972 Shovelhead.
The contest created a lot of buzz - especially when we
gave it away at One Eyed Jacks Saloon on Main St in
Sturgis during the 75th Anniversary. It was definitely
one of the highlights of our year.
LRN: Wow!!
That’s awesome!
So, it sounds like
you were pleased
with the excitement
around it; is this
something you
would do again?
BG: I’m glad you
asked because we
ARE going to do it

iding weather is HERE!!! And what better way
to kick-off Laconia Motorcycle Week 2016, then by
finding out what Twisted Tea has planned for this year’s
Rally. I recently spoke with Bill Grotto of Twisted Tea
and he’s been a busy man! Here are some updates of
what we chatted about:

SUPPORT THE 2016 RALLY PATRONS
A
s a not-for-profit Association, we need all the help we can get to plan a nine day Rally of this
magnitude. We get a lot of help from the State of New Hampshire and from our Corporate Sponsors, but we
couldn’t accomplish what we do – on the scale that we do it, without the support we get from our Rally
Patrons. This list is comprised of businesses, organizations and individuals who support the Rally. Please help
us by supporting them! You’ll find great restaurants, lodging facilities and everything from motorcycle and car
dealerships to gas stations. The list is in alphabetical order except for the first 30 listings; those are ones that
sent in their support right away to make the top 30. Show your support!

Winner of the NazBar Miss Laconia 2015!
The NASWA Resort, biker owned and friendly, has been a
proud sponsor of the Laconia Motorcycle Week Rally® for
many years. Family-owned and operated for three generations, the husband and wife team, Peter and Hope Makris
raised their daughters on the property; Cynthia Makris
now president, her sister, Karen Lowell who manages the
dining room at the Blue Bistro and her husband, Jim
Lowell, who keeps operations running smoothly, continue
the 81-year tradition of welcoming bikers each year to
enjoy the lakefront rooms, one and two-bedroom waterfront cottages, suites with kitchen or hotel rooms, all located in the heart of Laconia on Weirs Boulevard, just blocks
to Weirs Beach.
Hungry? Thirsty? Breakfast, lunch, dinner with live music
and entertainment are available 7-days a week at The Blue
Bistro and NAZBar. The Blue Bistro, just off the hotel
lobby, offers creatively inspired cuisine for breakfast and

matriarch Hope, creates an array of “Hope-Made” desserts
that are worth every calorie! For entertainment, go no further—your bike is parked and the Blue Bar carries on into
the night with live music and your favorite cocktails, fine
wines and craft brews.

T
he old saying, “A man’s
deeds are his life,” for Peter
Makris became, “A man’s deeds
are his legacy.”
When Laconia Motorcycle
Week® riders take off from the
NASWA Resort’s Chrome Hill
on Saturday, June 11, 2016 to
officially kickoff the start of the
93-year old rally for the Peter
Makris Memorial Run, they can
be proud. On this 10th anniverPeter Makris
sary run, they will know that
their contribution is continuing a legacy started by the
ride’s namesake and is helping countless lives across the
State of New Hampshire.
Over 20 years ago, a Laconia Fire Department training
exercise proved fatal for a young fire fighter, demonstrating
the need for a water rescue unit. However, there were no
City funds available, so Peter Makris, patriarch of the family-owned NASWA Resort, located on the shore of Lake
Winnipesaukee, started a fund with his own $5,000 check.
He persuaded other businesses who benefitted from their
location on the scenic 70-acre lake explored by boaters,
paddlers and tourists from around the world to come on
board and the first Laconia Fire Department Water Rescue
boat was purchased.
Chief Ken Erickson and his team have saved numerous lives
over the years thanks to the efforts of Makris, but this was
just one of his many achievements as a community and business leader. The Boston-bred and educated attorney, proud of
his Greek Spartan heritage, joined the U.S. Marine Corp,
later becoming a member of the Leatherneck Marine’s
motorcycle club. Makris was also in law enforcement and an
elected City Councilman in Laconia, where he moved after
marrying Hope Salta, whose parents founded the NASWA
Resort, named after the Natural Spring Water plant on the
property. He and Hope expanded the resort and with the
then, questionable idea from his daughter, Cynthia, to open a
beach bar, the family further grew the resort to include the
now popular NAZBar & Grill--the site of the kickoff breakfast and all-day party that follows the charity run.
Bikers world-over have come to share the fun and fundraising of this memorial run around Lake Winnipesaukee that
has raised over $300,000 to fully fund the Laconia Fire
Department Lifesaving Fund and water rescue boats; it also
supports Veterans Count, an Easter Seals NH program that
assists veterans, active military and their families and the
Lakes Region CERT Team, a group of volunteer first
responders.
The Peter Makris Memorial Run skirts the entire Lake
Winnipesaukee perimeter, taking in the winding roads,
31
forests and scenic towns with
“feet-up” freedom, thanks to the
area and State Police
Department’s escorts. Food by
Big Boy Catering offers up far
more than traditional biker fare. A
full breakfast at 9AM gets riders
ready for kickstands up at 11AM, following musical performances and patriotic salutes. The gourmet buffet lunch is
renowned for its variety, quality and quantity.
Cynthia Makris, president of the NASWA Resort, Chair of
the Lakes Region Veterans Count program and Board
member of Easter Seals, NH and her whole family is
extremely proud of Peter’s Marine Corp service and are so
pleased to have headed a Lakes Region arm for the
Veterans Count program which provides essential services
to the entire State’s military and their families.
Cynthia also points out that her now 91-year old mother
rode with Peter on his Harley, and later his trike, which he
enjoyed to the end, so their rider and military roots run
strong! This is a great day for the whole Makris family and
for everyone who participates in this charitable run—keeping Peter’s legacy alive as he watches with joy to see
everyone riding in his honor!
Among the perks of the ride are a T-shirt, customized by
Harley Davidson licensed artist, David Uhl’s Uhlworks
design team; a full bountiful breakfast and buffet gourmet
lunch; live music; raffles for area goods and services; a
silent auction of valuable prizes--and a chip for a free beer,
“on Peter”—a toast he would like to have shared with all
his guests.
Registration can be done by phone at 603-366-4341 or

they came with more friends and

Laconia from Louisiana. Laconia’s own
Lynn Santosuosso, officer of the Army

road captain and brought the riders to Manchester

a police escort brought the entourage of trucks, trailers

Weirs Boulevard at the newly established Chrome Hill.
There, G. Smith Motorsports displayed its impressive

Three years ago, the G. Smith group decided to add

n your travels around the country,
you may have seen a round sticker with the
phrase “Schultz Approved” on the doors of the establishments. If it is a restaurant or lounge, you can feel safe
knowing that you will be well received and happy with
the overall service. Just because an establishment
doesn’t have a Schultz Approved sticker doesn’t mean
that it will not be a pleasant experience. However, seeing the sticker of approval is almost as good as a

money during Motorcycle Week aren’t
just the vendors and local restaurants. Tow
companies are making a lot of money for commonly overlooked parking mistakes. There are a lot
of places to park your car or bike during the Rally. There
are also lots of places where NOT to park your bike or
car: tow zones (this should be obvious), No Parking
Zones, blocking travel lanes, on private property without
permission, and the number one no-no is a handicap
accessible spot without the right plate or placard (restricted parking) these laws are strictly enforced.

SEAL OF APPROVAL . .
Ride to the sky on the legendary Mt. Washington Auto Road!
T
he most spectacular eight miles of riding in
the state can be found in the White Mountains of
New Hampshire on the Mt. Washington Auto Road.
This amazing ride to the summit of the highest peak
in the Northeast will reveal views that have to be
seen to be believed.
When America’s first man-made attraction opened
in 1861, it was known as the Mt. Washington
Carriage Road and it would be 50 years before the
change from real horsepower to machine made
horsepower would take place.
The first motorcycles to make the climb did so in
1905 during the second “Climb to the Clouds” race.
Records show that an Indian motorcycle, driven by
F.T. Kellogg set the speed record at 20 minutes 59.2
seconds, narrowly missing taking the overall speed
record to Bill Hilliard, who raced his Napier to the
top in 20 minutes, 58.4 seconds.
The good news is that today’s motorcyclists can
take all the time they want to enjoy the views on
the way up—and with 99 turns there are plenty of
views to take in! There are also a lot of potential
weather conditions to experience as the road cruises
through four climate zones from base to summit. At
more than a mile in the sky (6,288 feet to be exact),
it is best to be prepared for anything—as Mark
Twain once said, “If you don’t like the weather in
New England, just wait a minute”.
The Ride to the Sky tradition continues in 2016!
While bikes are welcome daily, all season long
(weather permitting), there are two “ motorcycleonly” days (or guided stage tours) on Monday, June
13th & Thursday, June 16th .
Join your fellow two-wheeled adventurers for what
has become a kind of informal “rolling rally” on the
road to the highpoint of New England. From there,
spread out before you will be the Presidential Range
in all its glory, along with views of five states and
Canada, with the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon —
unless you’re riding “among the clouds” which is an
exhilarating experience in itself! Either way, you can
proudly claim your bumper sticker, letting the world
know that “THIS BIKE CLIMBED MT. WASHINGTON”. Custom pictures of your Mt. Washington
experience will be taken all week long and be available through www.phantombiker.com.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road will be open daily
from 8:30am–5pm for regular operations and guided tours throughout Laconia Motorcycle Week®.
The cost for motorcycle and operator is $17; each
additional adult is $9. Guided tours are $36 for
adults and $16 for kids age 5-12. Breakfast or lunch
(with the best views in New Hampshire!) can also
be found at the Glen View Café at the Auto Road
base lodge.

Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa a must see
this year.
Exhibit Update: After about eight months planning, the
National Motorcycle Museum installed a great new temporary exhibit entitled Allstate Motorcycle CHOPPER
STORY presented by J&P Cycles. The twenty plus bikes
on display are originals from the 60's and 70's, early
1980's, when cut and extended stock frames, or frames
from Amen or Arlen Ness were used. Choppers from
Arlen Ness, Ron Finch, Dave Bell, Barry Duncan, Tommy
Summers and other builders across America make up the
CHOPPER STORY show. The exhibit was curated by
author and journalist, Paul d'Orleans. It's quite amazing
what's been located and shipped in from as far away as
Baltimore and San Francisco, and many of the bikes still
wear their original candy, pearl and gold leaf paint jobs
now 40 to 50 years old.

Events: The sixth annual Vintage Rally is set for June 4,
2016. Featuring a bike show, swap meet, motorcycle personalities and the dedication of one or more new Museum
exhibits, it’s a great time for a Museum visit. Gather your
no longer needed bikes, parts and accessories or memorabilia and set up a swap meet
space. Or shine up your 1990 or
earlier motorcycle and take home
a bike show award. Housing in
the area is limited so start planning your visit now; nationalmcmuseum.org/plan-a-visit/. Vintage
Rally; it’s about all kinds of bikes,
and the people who love them.
The exhibit will be in place
through May 2016 and includes
related artwork, memorabilia,
film, posters and photos, even a
chopper shop jammed with period components and three bikes in
progress. Surrounding CHOPPER STORY is a contemporary
motorcycle art show entitled 2
WHEELS+MOTOR, curated by
sculptor Ric Stewart. Paintings,
prints, photos, lithos, enamel
work and even bronze and mixed
media sculpture are part of this show.
Collections Update: The Flying
Merkel is among the most notable
early American motorcycles. With
an original unrestored bicycle, a
v-twin board track racer and a
Merkel Light recently added to the Merkel collection at
the Museum, the grouping of six motorcycles is thought to
be the largest in one place. While Harley-Davidson,
Indian, Thor and Excelsior built fine machines, Joseph
Merkel sought to bring design and technology not seen in
any motorcycles before. Mechanical developments from
racing led him to design a fork so good it was used by
New Exhibit Coming: STREAMLINER is the name of
the new Museum exhibit, coming in June 2016. It will
take a look at land speed record racing at Bonneville Salt
Flats and at other courses around the world. If you know
of LSR related motorcycles, photos, film, apparel, posters,
trophies, etc., that would be good for display, would help

It’s similar to a design used by Vincent, then Yamaha

23rd annual pow/mia freedom ride . . . “the ride to the rock”
JUNE 16, 2016 ~ THURSDAY at 7:00 PM
HESKY PARK, MEREDITH
28th Anniversary of the Vigil • 23rd Anniversary of the Freedom Ride
“As an American asked to serve, I was prepared to fight, to be wounded, to be captured and even
prepared to die, but I was not prepared to be abandoned.” – Former POW Eugene “Red” McDaniel
The Northeast POW/MIA Network vigil in
Meredith gained nationwide attention some 25
years ago when a small group of veterans
began holding weekly Thursday night vigils
to bring to light the nation’s lack of effort to
account for all service men and women missing from Vietnam. Through times of basking heat,
ridged rain storms and mid-winter snows, this small
group of people held vigils to gain people’s attention
to the fact that members of our armed forces were unaccounted for and forgotten.
F
or the past 22 years bikers attending
Laconia Motorcycle Week® have joined
forces on Thursday afternoon and made history in the Northeast. Over the past several
years, over 20 thousand motorcyclists have
ridden their motorcycles in the Northeast
POW/MIA Network® Freedom Ride. This year
join us for the ride from all points in Country to
“The Rock” Hesky Park, Meredith. The ROCK in
Hesky Park in Meredith is now ‘The States Original
POW/MIA Memorial’.
If you are unable to participate in the Freedom Ride,
please make time to be at Hesky Park for the vigil that
begins at 7PM.
If you or your
group are interested in riding in
the Freedom
Ride and need
more information, please contact Bob Jones
through email at
[email protected]. Visit our website: www.northeastpowmianetwork.org or see us on Facebook.
The Freedom Ride is slated to begin at 6PM on Thursday,
June 16, 2016, with line up beginning at 5PM at the Route
11 ~ 1407 Lakeshore Road, Gilford, NH 03249 (Lowe’s
parking). This year looks to break all years in participation
as organizers have joined forces with Blue and Gold Star
Mothers of N.H., all veterans and veteran organizations,
together with all bikers and biker organizations.
This is the year we ALL CAME together in the effort to
make it the largest gathering ever in New England…All
Bikers together, All Veterans together for the POW/MIA
issue. ★
It is the hope of all those people who are actively involved
in the POW/MIA Northeast Network that this year’s
Freedom Ride will exceed all others in attendance.
For those who have yet to participate in the Freedom
Ride, the real focus of the ride is to bring into light an issue
that affects hundreds of Americans and their families, those
men and women missing in action or held prisoner during
times of war and/or conflict.
The Freedom Ride brings riders to The State’s Original
POW/MIA Memorial, “The Rock”, at Hesky Park in
Meredith where members of the Northeast POW/MIA
Network conduct a vigil to honor those forgotten by our
government.

Let’s make this year’s Freedom Ride & Vigil the largest
by taking a few hours of your time during the Rally and
participating. Let your voice be heard.

Renting a bike? You might already be covered. If
you’re planning to rent a bike for your road trip instead
of riding your own, your current motorcycle insurance
might already protect your rental. Ask your agent or
log in to your policy online to find out if coverage for

like the Daytona Beach area, the ocean, the shops, the
people and Biketoberfest® make it even better. Prices for
hotels can be a better deal than Bike Week and the weather
is very warm.
Here are my tips while in Daytona for Biketoberfest.
Where to eat, my picks are:
Duff's Original Buffet, now at 2 locations; The Sunshine
Mall at 2400 Ridgewood Ave. on US RT1 and their second
location at the Belair Plaza 2667 N. Atlantic Ave, Daytona.
The staff is great along with hundreds of menu items.
Steve's Famous Diner, Located on the southbound side
of Atlantic Ave., about 2 miles north of Main Street.
Dedicated staff and a bakery on site with delicious meals.
The Ultimate Omelet, The locals love this place!
Breakfast and Lunch. The name says it all. The staff is
great, can be found at Ridgewood Ave, US RT 1, the
Northbound side, 1.3 miles north of US RT 92,
International Blvd.
Doughnuts and Coffee, only one spot, krispy kreme at
the corner of US RT 92 and Nova, open 24 hours.
Vendor Areas: Main Street, wall to wall vendors, including the Hot Leathers Stores. Beach Street, almost wall to
wall, lots of parking and the Welcome Center Tent is there.
Destination Daytona at I-95 and US RT 1 in Ormond
Beach is full of vendors and thinhs to check out, also
J & P Cycles has a very large store there along with Fix
Motorcycles of course, they are also located at the track in
Daytona. On US RT 1 in Ormond Beach there is also a
large vendor area, can't miss it.
The track on US RT 92 in Daytona is fast becoming it’s
own city, there will be racing, most of the demo's are there,
vendors, Hot Leathers tent and J & P Cycles. Lot and
lots to see.
The Daytona Flea Market is where Jam-On Swap meet is
held. And back on Beach Street there are some cool stores
like the Abstract Art Gallery, Moxie Vintage, Nicole’s
Beach Street Mall and Carousel Antiques, all worth
checking out.
If you have a chance give the city of Deland a try, very
cool city. Entertainment is everywhere and your choice.
While in Daytona, the city would love to take your money
if you are stopped for speeding, so be wise and don't.
Speeding anywhere in and around Daytona is for suckers
as is drinking to much and then riding.
Remember, if you don't have the time to ride down from
the north, there is always Amtrack's Auto train.
Stations are at Lorton VA, just south of DC and Sanford
Fla, 30 miles west of Daytona. Call 800-USA-Rail for
info. The earlier you book, the better the price.
Have fun, book early and enjoy!
See you at Biketoberfest! ★

t’s freedom, sunshine, open road and graceful curves. It’s called the Loop
and for motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere, it’s a riders dream.
The 22 mile ride of open road begins with a northerly trek at the foot of the
Granada Bridge on John Anderson Drive in Ormond Beach. Going North, riders
are greeted by a cathedral of trees up to the Highbridge Road where they hang a
left (to go west) and go over the bridge and the Intracoastal Waterway (the
Halifax River). There are several places to stop along the way and just enjoy the
Florida countryside. After more winding turns, you’ll come upon Walter
Boardman road where you will make another turn that takes you further west to
Old Dixie Highway. When you reach Old Dixie Highway, take another left (to go south) toward Ormond Beach.
This leisurely ride will give you a feel for Florida’s natural beauty. Check out Ormond Park and the Fairchild Oak tree one of Florida’s oldest living Oaks. Bring your camera, maybe a boxed lunch, and enjoy. ★

76 YEARS
Consider this to be your invitation to join your friends and
family in Sturgis for the 76th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle
Rally August 8-14, 2016. We love hosting our world class
Rally and really hope you are able to join us. We work hard
to provide an exciting variety of events to suit every interest
our motorcycling guests have. We know you won’t be disappointed with the activities and events we have scheduled
for 2016.
If organized rides aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other
activities to keep you busy during your trip to Sturgis.
In 2015, the City of Sturgis and Harley-Davidson officially
announced a long term partnership agreement naming
Harley-Davidson as the official motorcycle of the Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally. One of the highlights of the 2015 Rally
was the official dedication of Harley-Davidson Rally Point
located in the heart of downtown Sturgis. The City is proud
of this gathering area and during the week-long 2016 Rally,
there will be a host of music, activities and events every day
at the Rally Point.
If speed is more you style, you can join the Boz Brothers
and their friends at the Sturgis Dragway (date tbd) for the
‘Run What You Brung’ Drag Racing Extravaganza.
Participants can ride in and sign up to drag against the
Bostroms or any of their friends at this special one-night
event at the Sturgis Dragway located just east of town.
The Legends of Racing began in 2015 with six celebrity
racers including Carey Hart, Ben Bostrom, Eric Bostrom,
Mickey Dymond, Doug Henry and Ricky Carmichael. In
2016, each of these racers will return and they will each
bring a friend who is also considered to be a racing legend.
You can tag along with the group as they visit downtown
bars and restaurants, eventually winding up at the HarleyDavidson Rally Point with a meet and greet social. The
date of this event is not yet determined.
Back by popular demand…
Everyone knows that bikers are the most charitable group
around. While in Sturgis, you are invited to join any number of charity rides. Don’t miss out! Register for your
favorite rides early as many have limited space. You can
view all the details on our official website.
August 8 – The 14th Annual Mayor’s Ride. This exclusive
ride raises money for the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department
and Police Reserves. Join the Mayor and his special guests
for a ride through the most beautiful areas of the Black
Hills. Riders will take an awesome group photo at Mt.
Rushmore and will end the spectacular ride with a delicious
lunch at Custer State Park. Register early as this ride sells
out quickly. Visit the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally website for
registration and to see photos from the 2015 ride.

August 10 - Boz Brothers Ride. This event began in 2014
and was an immediate hit. Superbike competitors Ben and
Eric Bostrom guide their guests on a spirited ride through
some of the most amazing back roads the Black Hills has to
offer. You are invited to join industry professionals, celebrities and legends for this exhilarating ride to raise funds for
the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation. To view all the
details and to register, you can visit their Face book page at

Tips on Sturgis Schultz
76
th
D
the prize goes to the Millstone Restaurant, just off the second exit off I90, heading west. They are open 24 hours and
the prices are not raised during the rally. Wonderful staff!!
Here are some of my tried and true tips related to all things
Sturgis:
WATERING HOLES:
They are EVERYWHERE! The Side Hack in town on
Lazelle Street is cool along with the Back Porch in
Spearfish Canyon. Your pick – but these two are real.
on’t worry about what year it is. ’75 is nice but so is
’76. Don’t miss the visit to Sturgis if you can take the time
to make the trip – it’s worth it!
CAMPING / LODGING:
Make your reservations out of Meade County so you can
enjoy a campfire. Chris’ Campground rates right up there
as a great spot – if you can get in. Do your homework –
there’s a lot of other campgrounds all around Spearfish,
Deadwood and Lead.
In Meade County, the Broken Spoke Saloon Campground
is a nice set-up east of town and with lots of entertainment.
There’s a ton of other places around too but this is my pick.
GROCERIES:
Year after year, it’s Grocery Mart on Junction Ave that
winds the award for best grocery store in the area. Prices
stay the same and the service is great, it’s a real family-run
store.
MEALS:
There are countless places to choose from and I couldn’t
begin to list them all here. From my experience, the best
“All You Can Eat” Pancake breakfast is at the Grace
Lutheran Church at 1061 Sherman Street, just off Junction
Ave, one block south of Main Street. On Main Street, there
is Weimer’s Diner, good food and service. In Spearfish,
MUST SEE:
The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum! This place is well
worth the price of admission – it is packed with stuff! The
Michael Lichter Photography Exhibit – Michael puts his
heart and soul into his work and it shows. His display is set
up at the Buffalo Chip, east of Sturgis. This year’s exhibit is
“Skin & Bones” – the influence of tattoo art on custom
motorcycles and biker culture. The Badlands get better with
time; I ride through every year and make a stop at the
Cowboy Stop in Interior. Devil’s Tower, Spearfish
Canyon, and Deadwood all should be including in your
‘places to go’ list. There are lots of towns around the hills
also throw out the welcome mat. You also want to make
sure you check out all the Jackpine Gypsy Events – these
are REAL motorcycle events!
SAFETY FACTS:
Watch out for animals, day and night. Pay attention to the
weather, it can get real mean – real fast. Stay away from the
centerline. Don’t speed! Keep two feet on the grounds at
ALL of those stop signs the City puts up during the Rally.

Half Moon Enterprises – proud Laconia Motorcycle Week® board member!
T
he Half Moon, the block at the very center of
Weirs Beach, has been at the heart of Motorcycle Week
action since the early 1950’s, when the business was
established by Sidney Ames. The very symbol of Weirs
Beach, the iconic, neon Weirs Beach arrow sign, built in
1956, was a result of Sidney's efforts. His three sons have
carried on with the business, now known officially as the
Half Moon Enterprises. They have also carried on with
promoting Weirs Beach, in 1998 establishing the website
WeirsBeach.com, the best source for general information
about the area.
The Half Moon block begins at the corner of New
Hampshire Avenue and extends down Lakeside Avenue
to Tower Street. On the left corner, the Half Moon Pizza
Stand sells the freshest, tastiest pizza in town. Next
door, there are many exciting vendors located in the Half
Moon Penny Arcade and Bumper Cars buildings, including Biker Apparel, the tattoo artistry of Mr. Bill’s
Roadhouse, and other vendors. At the center of the block,
the Half Moon Gift Shop has a great selection of
Motorcycle Week T-Shirts, jewelry, and accessories. On
the right corner, you'll find Hot Leathers located in the
Half Moon Family Fun Center building.

Trading Post, Motorcycle Rally USA, Walter Dyer

newest addition to the Half Moon.
The Patio Garden Restaurant, a.k.a. "Party Central", is at
the Winnipesaukee Marketplace. To get there, follow the
Weirs Beach boardwalk, and go past Rally HQ, to where
the boardwalk ends. Or, cross over the antique iron footbridge from Lakeside Avenue. Stop a minute to take in
the view of Weirs Beach from the platform at the top.
Admission to the Patio Garden is free, with up to four
bands per day on two stages, and two full bars. Treat
yourself to a fine Italian or American meal, and a beer or
cocktail, while enjoying music from some great NH and
Boston bands.
Tucked behind all the Lakeside Avenue action is the Half
Moon Motel & Cottages, the most convenient lodging
location in the area, within very close walking distance of
all the Motorcycle Week activities. The Half Moon Motel
& Cottages features a beautiful scenic view of the lake
from every room; a king-size, solar-heated pool; clean,
comfortable, modern rooms; and cottages with kitchenettes and private, screened-in porches. Reserving a
room at the Half Moon for Motorcycle Week is easy; just

Police thrill stories helped to establish the industry in the
beginning and we continue to strive to bring that excitement to all of you.

FIM North American vintage road
race championships return to NHMS
June 11-12
N
ew Hampshire Motor Speedway will once again
host the FIM North America Vintage Road Race
Championships on its 1.6 mile road course. The fastest
vintage racers from across the US and Canada will compete at this internationally sanctioned event. What is vintage? Basically all the race machines competing were
manufactured prior to 1994 with the oldest race bikes dating back into the 1930’s. Make no mistake, the races are
not just a parade of old bikes but rather it is all out elbow
to elbow racing at speeds exceeding 130 mph for the
fastest machines.
The old Indian and Harley race machines from the 1930’s
and 40’s are a must see as they are all tank shifters and use
ridged frames. No rear suspension means that sliding these
old machines was the normal. You can’t dial in the rear
suspension if there is none. This throw back in time racing
can only be appreciated by actually seeing them in action.
The heart of the vintage racers are the machines from the
1960’s through mid 1980’s.
Here the old British machines like Triumph and BSA still
compete on par against the new wave of Japanese multi
cylinder bikes of the 1970’s.
Admission to the races allows all spectators to park inside
the NASCAR oval, wander the garages and have free
access to the grandstands. Races are run rain or shine. ★

Of Additional note are the fabulous vintage sidecars
where the passenger (monkey) hangs off the sidecar
scraping their shoulder on the ground to act as ballast for
the machine. Without that passenger ballast balancing the
outfit, the sidecar would instantly flip over in a turn. Most
of the passengers are women…some wives, some girlfriends and other just speed thrill seekers.

Should motorcycle rallies be “family events”?
Jennifer Anderson
walk around different vending areas checking out the
latest and greatest in the industry. This, my friends, is
how you excite and interest the next generation in what
YOU already like. Kids don’t just turn 21 and say “well,
I guess I better get a motorcycle and head to a rally
now”. They need to be introduced to it so that they grow
up informed about safety, responsibility, and FUN!
A
fter any major event, there is a period of reflection where the organizations involved with planning and
promotion take a hard look at how everything turned out
and decide what aspects of change to focus on for the
following year. Motorcycle rallies operate in the same
fashion – these rallies don’t ‘just happen’ . . . There is a
year’s worth of planning, organizing and promoting to
be done. Reviewing the feedback from visitors, residents, and businesses is important because they are the
heart of any rally. Most of the time, this feedback is
constructive, sometimes . . . it’s just plain critical.
But again, we are talking about motorcycle-families and
we also strongly suggest families use particular caution
about the time of day and where they are bringing
their kids. Some events are not suitable for kids and
those events shouldn’t have to change just because a
minor might ‘see’ it. Instead, use common sense . . . If
you’re close enough to do so – Come up with your friends
to ride during the day and live it up at night – then come
back on a nice afternoon during the week and show your
son or daughter why mom and/or dad is always packing
the bike for the next rally. Rallies will not sustain over
time if we don’t introduce younger generations to them.
Laconia Motorcycle Week® has been around for almost
100 years and we’d like to stay for another 100.
One of the common topics of criticism that we hear
after Laconia Motorcycle Week® ends is regarding kids
at the rally: “why are they trying to make this a family
event?” “They” refers to the Laconia Motorcycle
Week® Association and, we assume, the other outside
agencies that we work closely with – such as the City of
Laconia. We understand the basis for this complaint –
people associate rallies with loud pipes, exhaust fumes,
music, scantily dressed women, alcohol, and all sorts of
adult entertainment in music, contests, and parties . . .
To put it in a word – FUN! Once the term “family
event” is brought up that means an end to all the “fun”.
So, are we trying to make Laconia Motorcycle Week® a
family event? Yes. A motorcycle-family event. Stay
with me here – there IS a difference.

Help us pass on the tradition. ★
The state of NH is geographically pretty small, as is the
City of Laconia. Because it’s relatively easy to get
around our state, people can come to Laconia for a ‘daytrip’ just to check out the rally sights – and we encourage them to do so! This also means, however; that many
of these people aren’t necessarily ‘motorcyclists’ but
more just ‘people-watchers’. And that’s fine too. Did
you know that there is a town ordinance in Laconia during Motorcycle Week that makes it illegal to walk your
dog down Lakeside Avenue? There’s a perfectly good
reason for this – a dog’s ears, nose and throat are at the
exact height of motorcycle exhaust pipes. With thousands of motorcycles converging on Lakeside Avenue
during the rally, the exhaust fumes and sounds are at
dangerously high levels – protect your animals! Makes
sense! Well, guess who else this makes sense for?
Babies and children in strollers! Now, we can’t tell parents NOT to bring their babies but we’d like to think
that good parenting sense would remind them not to do
so during peak times.

The Blais family line-up for the motorcycle family “look-alike” contest during
the races at Belknap Recreation Area.
Here’s the caveat – what we DO want to see is motorcyclists introducing their children to the sport of motorcycling. We want men and women riders to bring their
kids to bike shows, motorcycle races, hill climbs, and to

throughout the area
or many non-profits around the area during Motorcycle Week is a great
chance to help their cause with support from all of the riders who come to
Laconia. In Weirs Beach, there will be the Laconia Rotary Club with their
motorcycle raffle on Lakeside Ave. The Laconia Kiwanis Club on the boardwalk of Lakeside Ave. will have a water and soda stop. The Weirs
Community Park Association has $5.00 parking for motorcycles and only
$10 to park cars. The Weirs Action Committee parks vehicles on Weirs
Beach and the price is always $5 for motorcycles. There are sure to be other
charitable groups around the area during Motorcycle Week, so check out what
they have to offer and find out what causes they are supporting. ★

t sounds cliché but STUPID is VERY expensive!
Enjoy the ride, but next stop thinking. Another
cliché is SMART PAYS – with riding, it’s even more
important than just that. It’s lifesaving! Check Twice
is not just for drivers in cars – it’s a reminder for us
to check twice as we ride. Stay away from the centerline, be ready for animals jumping out in the road
and do not drive impaired. Thanks for thinking
while you ride! ★

Plan your route.
Although it can be tempting to hit the road without a
destination in mind, planning a route will ensure
you’ll stay well fed and gassed up. If you don’t have a
GPS, get up-to-date maps and go online to get a list of
hotels and campgrounds near your route so you can
find a place to rest for the night.

What is a rally patron?
ur biggest cheering squad besides our
visitors are our patrons. A Laconia Motorcycle
Week® Rally Patron basically means that any
business, organization or individual who is a
Rally Patron is a big supporter of Motorcycle
Week in Laconia. This means they like the people/motorcyclists/bikers, etc. that the Rally brings and they welcome
them into their establishment with open arms!
O
Does that mean that any business that is NOT a Rally
Patron doesn’t like the Rally and all of the visitors it
brings? Maybe...that’s a good question...one that should be
answered before you spend your money with them. Why
wouldn’t you become a Rally Patron to keep the Rally and
its yearly visitors here locally, in beautiful Laconia?

H
I’m sure all of you are as excited as I am for
Laconia Motorcycle Week® 2016. It looks like
there will be a lot of new events added this year
that sound very exhilarating such as a number of
well-known bands that will be playing. As our parents have taught us, it’s during the good times we
are fortunate enough to experience that it is important to try and remember to be thankful for what
you have and give back, or as they say now pay it
forward. With this in mind, I would like to take a
moment to share my experience on a very memorable and worthy charity ride I attended last year,
which was Brenda’s Ride w/Friends 2015 –
Fighting Cancer One Mile At A Time. Started by
Brenda Ganong, an 18-year cancer survivor.
watch him race back up to the front of the line to
reach the next traffic obstacle.
When we arrived at Waterville Valley, everyone
took some time to get to know each other and meet
new friends and we met a lot great people that day.
After the group photo, we all jumped back onto our
bikes for the ride back to the Faro Italian Grille for
an afternoon of food, live music and rafflesI had
such a great time that you could easily forget you
were there to help donate to a worthy cause since
I can see myself paying to attend this fun event
regardless. It just made it that more special knowing you are contributing to help those in need during such a difficult time in their lives.
My friends and I showed up at Brenda’s Ride headquarters, Faro Italian Grille located right up the
road from Weirs Beach, at 9:00AM and the parking
lot was already packed! There were breakfast items
and refreshments to enjoy while last minute attendees were getting registered. We were also able to
see all of the auction items on display where people
had already started placing their bids while we
were waiting to leave. All of these items were generously donated by surrounding businesses and
sponsors and there was a large variety of categories
to choose from. I had bid on a couple of items but
got outbid at the last minute. This was fine with me
since I knew it meant more money was received for
this worthy cause.
I am sure that cancer has directly affected each
and every one of you who is reading this article
whether it was a family member, close friend, coworker, etc. Brenda experienced another bout of
cancer this past December, this time in her lungs,
but with the help from God and LRGH Oncology
she is now safely in remission. Please join us this
year and as I said earlier, pay it forward and have
a great time that you will always remember.
Details on this year’s event below:
Kickstands were up and we were off at 10am with
over 100 motorcycles making it the largest run I
have ever been on. Our procession was led by volunteer local law enforcement and we left the Weirs
Beach area to start our journey towards Waterville
Valley. The route they chose were all beautiful back
roads and with so many bikes in attendance, I
thought it was going to take a long time to get to
our destination. This would have been fine with me
since it was a gorgeous day to be riding. However,
before I realized it we were already there. Our
police escort did such a great job that we did not
stop even once. I was very impressed with their
riding abilities and it was amazing to see Alton
Officer Sean Sullivan blocking each traffic
light/sign until the last rider made it through then
Join Brenda and her friends for the 14th Annual
Brenda’s Ride 2016 – Saturday, August 13th. The
ride starts at Faro Italian Grille, 70 Endicott Street
in Laconia. Registration is from 8:30-9:30AM. The
Ride will start at 10AM sharp as hundreds of
motorcycles depart together for an escorted ride to
Waterville Valley by local law enforcement volunteers. The convoy will arrive back at Faro early
afternoon for a cookout, raffles, and live music.
The cost to ride is $25 pre-registered or $30 the
day of the event and includes food and entertainment. All are welcome. For those who do not plan
to ride but want to stop by for food and entertainment, a small donation is encouraged. For more

roads. From June 11-19, locals and surrounding neighbors
will once more welcome riders from all over the world to
attend the 93rd Laconia Motorcycle Week®.
As everyone has been saying for past several years, this
event has become a much quieter and gentler event but in
many respects, it’s actually a far better rally. It’s easier to
get around and of course, the countryside and the riding are
spectacular.
This year’s venue will feature over 500 vendors selling
everything from the craziest items such as Nordic style
motorcycle helmets to some of the most stunning custom
built motorcycles in the world. The number of food item
choices will also have such a wide range and variety to be
able to please every single palate that chooses to attend.
There will also be daily scheduled events that will please
and entertain any personality imaginable such as;
• Memorial rides, charity rides and scenic tours for the
passionate riders
• Tattoo shows and contests for the creative talents
• Live concerts and venues all over the state for the
musically inspired
• Pool tournaments, bikini/leg contests for those who
seek the competitive edge
• FIM North American Vintage Championship racing at NHMS
• AMA Sanctioned PRO Hill climbs in Canaan-NH
• Big Air Jumps & Stunt shows at Makris Lobster &
Steakhouse
• M/S Mount Washington Cruise
• Motorcycle demos, bikini bike washes and the list goes on…
America’s oldest rally may have mellowed over the years
but it still has its own unique style and feeling such as

will only be disappointed if you do not attend.

Join us for the Mae West
Memorial pet run!
NHMRO – advocating for
motorcyclists since 1975!
O
lease join
Sick Boy Motorcycles as they host
the 3rd Annual Mae
West Memorial Pet
Run. This run has been a staple for the rally over the
last several years and continues to grow. On the first
year alone we had over 180 people join us for the run
and even more who donated to the cause! The run
meets at Rally Headquarters on Lakeside Avenue any
time after 8:30 Monday, June 13th and leaves at
10:30 sharp. This is a police-escorted ride and although
it’s short on time, it’s bountiful on scenery! We will
ride through Weirs Beach and end at the Broken Spoke
Saloon. There will be fantastic door prizes and much
more to enjoy at the Broken Spoke. Participation in the
ride is $25 for rider and $20 for the passenger, which
gets you a limited Sick Boy/Pet run t shirt. The entire
cost of the ride is donated to the local Lakes Region
Humane Society. This year, we hope to break another
record as every year we have been able to raise more
money for the shelter. If you can't make the run, but
wish to donate please stop by the Sick Boy booth in
the Laconia Roadhouse lot and get a pet run t shirt,
while they last! Go to
Sickboy.com or the
Official website of the
Rally:

for more information.

nce again the New
Hampshire Motorcyclists’
Rights Organization welcomes you to our beautiful
state and we hope that you
enjoy the 93rd Laconia Rally!
For those of you who may not
be familiar with our organization, the New Hampshire
Motorcyclists’ Rights Organization
(NHMRO) was incorporated in 1975 as a
non-profit organization for the sole purpose of restoring
certain freedoms lost and for retaining freedoms that had
not yet been tampered with through education.
NHMRO has remained true to its purpose by providing
motorcyclist voter education & updates on proposed legislation to our members as well as testimony to the NH legislature on motorcyclists issues. We welcome any and all
motorcyclists as members of the organization so that they
may help us in protecting the rights of ALL motorcyclists
regardless of their preference in motorcycles, life styles,
or where, when, and how they enjoy riding.
NHMRO has worked diligently over the years to ensure
that you have the freedom of choice when it comes to helmet use. We do not support mandatory helmet legislation,
but rather we believe that education is more effective to
increase the safety and crash avoidance.
We would like to remind all of you who are here for a day
or for the week, to be extra aware of other traffic on the
road, and to not drink and ride – not even buzzed. With
our Ride Smart NH © program, we have found that
motorcyclists can be our own worst enemy because we
don’t realize the effect of a few drinks can have on us and
our riding ability.
So, park the bike, eat, drink, and be merry. Enjoy the
sights - there are just as many interesting sights when
you’re not riding... We would like to have everyone leave
with good memories of their stay at bike week and not
have it cut short with a crash, or something even worse.
NHMRO hopes you enjoy your stay, enjoy your rides,
and most of all Ride Smart NH®– ride safe, ride respectfully, and ride free!

bring some cheer!
O
n Friday, June 17th, some of the residents of the
Belknap County Nursing Home will be having lunch on
the lawn, along side of SR106, North Main Street, to
enjoy the sights and sounds of Motorcycle Week. They
will be outside from 11am–2pm.
They would be absolutely thrilled to have some of you
stop by and say Hi, if even for just 10-15 minutes. That
would bring alot of joy into their lives as you can be sure
they would rather be riding on the road with you!
Brighten up their days and it will bring you some good
thoughts too.
Taking life by the horns!
Thanks for caring. ★

Lakeside Avenue - Always FREE PARKING for your bike!

T
he people making money during Motorcycle Week
aren’t just the vendors and local restaurants. Tow companies are making a lot of money for commonly overlooked
parking mistakes. There are a lot of places to park your car
or bike during the Rally. There are also lots of places
where NOT to park your bike or car: tow zones (this
should be obvious), No Parking Zones, blocking travel
lanes, on private property without permission, and the
number one no-no is a handicap accessible spot without
the right plate or placard (restricted parking) these laws are
strictly enforced.
As always, Lakeside Avenue has FREE
parking for your motorcycle all week. Be
sure to follow the traffic patterns and
park in designated areas. The Weirs Action
Committee, a non-profit organization that has
excellent parking right at the beach lot for only
$5/motorcycle. There are others that offer motorcycle
parking for only $5… Faro Italian Grille, Donna Jean’s
Diner, the huge parking lot at the end of Foster Ave., and
the Weirs Beach Community Park Association behind the
Fire Station. Others move their rates up and down, day to
day – wherever you chose to park . . . DO NOT PAY over
$5 to park your motorcycle! ★
roadhouse Rock-It!

Bentley’s Biker
Rally kicks off

our United

veterans.
B
entley’s Saloon, owned by New England’s legendary race car driver Bentley Warren, is located in
Arundel, Maine, just 70 scenic miles from Laconia and
minutes from the coastal beaches. What was once just a
small bar room on Route 1 turned into a nationwide biker
destination. The “compound” as referred to by radio stations has indoor and outdoor bars, a courtyard with a
friendly backyard atmosphere, a 40’ by 60’ “smoking”
tent with a bar, gift shop, motel and campground within
stumbling distance from the saloon.
It’s an all week party with a Ride-In Bike Show for
trophies and cash prizes on Thursday, June 16, rain date
is Friday.
Always fun daily live entertainment and parties . . .
car shows usually displaying over 100 cars on
Tuesdays, open mic night on Wednesdays,
Twisted Thursday nights, live bands on
Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays with no cover
charges. Bentley’s has more than just a typical
bar menu. They’re popular for pig roasts on
Saturdays, cooked in their own BBQ “biker
style” smoker!!
Join us on Tuesday, June 14th for the ride to
Bentley’s from Rally Headquarters in Weirs
Beach. Leaves at 10:30am.

he incredible
vintage road racing
sidecars will
return for the
FIM North
America
Vintage
Road Race
Championships June 11,12
at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Vintage sidecar racing has to be one of the most insane, thrilling
and dangerous forms of motor racing. A three wheel
vehicle carrying two people . . . racing on skinny tires .
. . with high horsepower . . . traveling inches from the
ground is a recipe for excitement found nowhere else.
The driver slides the sidecar through the corners
wrestling for control while the passenger climbs from
side to side acting as a ballast keeping the sidecar
from flipping. Not for the faint of heart, passengers
have been known to fall off the machine at speed unnoticed by the driver. The driver only becomes aware of
the missing passenger when he attempts to take the
next corner with devastating results. Some describe
sidecar racing as a gladiator sport like the Roman
chariot racing. ★

Harley vs Indian wars at NH Motor Speedway – June 11-12
O
nce again the grudge racing pitting the old Tank Shifter Harley’s and Indians from
the 1930’s and 40’s will take place at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway during
the FIM North America Vintage Road Racing Championships. For the past several
years the drama of this match race has drawn competitors from across the United
States to try and settle which machine will win the coveted event.
The history of the “Laconia” races dating from the 1930’ through the 1940’s
saw these two American motorcycle icons battle it out for the coveted
“Laconia” win. That battle still continues today as these old machines fight all
out in some amazing races to once again establish dominance on the track.
Noted vintage racer Doc Batsleer from Daytona, Florida usually brings a collection of the old racers for some of the young guns to try and race. Though the young guns are very fast, it is
sometimes the wily old racers that have raced these old bikes for years that show the way around schooling in the
craft of racing. There is nothing like the noise, smoke and smell of these old machines to transport you back 70–80
years in time to racing the way it was. ★
