Elvis seen at
the Airport!
By Melinda Gay, Sonoma County Airport
There was something exciting to
celebrate when Horizon Air launched new
daily nonstop flights between Las Vegas and
Santa Rosa on April 24. Launch festivities
included live music, refreshments, and a
special appearance by talented Las Vegas
Elvis impersonator Harry Shahoian. Elvis
posed for photos, chatted with the crowd
and much to everyone’s delight, sang a song.
Sky Lounge Restaurant hosted the band,
Sunday at Ed’s, and with its patio seating
adjacent to the airfield, celebrants had a clear
view of the plane’s arrival and departure. Bob
FM was on hand to collect entry forms for
an on air promotion for the new service and
the winners of two roundtrip flights to Las
Vegas were announced the next day.
While passengers were boarding, officials

from Sonoma County, Horizon Air, Las
Vegas, the Airport, the Airline Attraction Committee, and Elvis enjoyed celebratory toasts on the ramp hosted by the
Sonoma County Tourism Bureau. Percy Brandon, Sonoma County Tourism
Board Chairman, provided wine from Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery
for the departure toast and for an onboard toast as well. Airport, Horizon
Air, and Security staff worked together to coordinate the event and inaugural
toasts, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, represented by
Brig Lawson, generously provided Elvis. Lawson and Shahoin pulled off an
extraordinary feat, traveling from Las Vegas through San Francisco Airport,
driving up 101 during rush hour traffic, arriving just in time to wow the
Paul Kelley, Elvis, and Jon Stout
crowd, and then heading back home on the first flight to Vegas.

Art at the Airport - Peanuts!
The family of Charles M. Schulz generously donated 14 reproductions of
Peanuts cartoon strips to the Airport. The clever comics will go on display in
the passenger hold room in early July, amusing travelers as they wait to board
their flights. The strips features aviation themes (Red Baron anyone?) and
there is even one about a winery. The Airport appreciates the Schulz family’s
generosity and knows the comics will be enjoyed for years to come.

The sold-out flight taxied to the runway under a
sparkling arc of water from an Airport fire truck before
heading off to Las Vegas. The fun didn’t end on take-off;
there was more to come. The Las Vegas Convention and
Visitors Authority provided a goodie-filled gift bag for every
passenger on board, and to everyone’s surprise, also gave out
complimentary tickets to a Blue Man Group show.
This is the first time that Horizon Air has offered
air service with the Bombardier Q400 to Las Vegas. The
airline initiated the service in response to public demand
because Las Vegas is a very popular destination with
North Bay travelers.

Visiting WWII Bombers Bring History Alive
The Flying Fortress (seen above) is one of only fourteen B-17s still flying in the United States. B-17s were primarily employed in the
daylight strategic bombing campaign against German industrial and military targets during WWII.
Three-day visit thrills history buffs By Melinda Gay, Sonoma County Airport
Four World War II fighting aircraft were in town recently as part of a Wings of Freedom National Tour. Presented by
the Collings Foundation and stationed on Sonoma Jet Center’s ramp, the authentically restored B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24
Liberator, B-25J Mitchell, and P51 Mustang were open for walking tours as well as flights on the B-17 and B-24.
The Wings of Freedom Tour has two goals: to honor America’s veterans by letting them know they are not forgotten;
and to educate the visitors about the aircraft and World War II. The Collings Foundation encourages people to tour the
planes, talk to the veterans who come to visit the aircraft, and participate in a flight. In 18 years, the tour has made more
than 2,172 stops at cities and towns across the lower United States and Alaska. It is estimated that between 3 and 4 million
people see the warbirds annually.
The Flying Ace Makes a Big Splash a the Rose Parade
The Airport’s state-of-the-art aircraft firefighting
and rescue vehicle was a huge hit at Santa Rosa’s Rose
Parade in May. Expertly piloted by Airport Operations
Specialist Supervisor Andrew Guenther, the garlanddraped fire truck was greeted by squeals of joy and
shouts of “spray me” by the excited crowd. Children
laughed as they were squirted with water on the very
hot Saturday morning. Exuberant kids (and adults) were
kept at a safe distance from the truck by a brigade of
student volunteers armed with green umbrellas.
As the fire truck traveled along the parade route,
Snoopy’s alias, the Flying Ace, attempted to quench a
fire on the Sopwith Camel
started by the Red Baron
in an airborne skirmish.
Snoopy sat atop the fire
truck’s robotic turret and
directed the spray at his
beloved flaming doghouse, but his aim wasn’t great that day. Airport Secretary Gloria Coté
didn’t even get wet while she pulled the hot doghouse along as Snoopy managed to miss her
and soak the gleeful crowd instead. By Melinda Gay

Hangar Inspections
The Airport is currently conducting its annual hangar inspections. The inspections will be ongoing until all hangars have
been properly inspected. Airport Operation Specialists are going through a different category of hangars every month. The
next sets of hangars to be inspected are categories D and G. Please be advised that Airport approved locks are required on
all hangars. If your hangar does not have an Airport approved lock on it, please come into the Airport Manager’s Office to
purchase one. Tenants can be present while the inspection is conducted on their hangar, but it is not mandatory.
Sealcoat Project
Apron E will have a fresh new sealcoat applied during July. The sealcoat is done in order to seal the blacktop and preserve
it for years to come. The sealcoating should only take two days, however a date has not been
set for the project. If it takes longer than expected or if the projected date of completion
changes, notices will be sent out to Apron E tenants informing them of the changes. Thank
you for your patience.
Taxiway Striping
Airport Operation Specialists are busy putting a fresh coat of paint on all taxiway
lines around the Airport. By applying new paint to the existing taxi lines, visibility will be
greatly enhanced. It’s a lengthy and skilled process to be able to stripe lines as straight as
possible and for miles at a time. Striping should be complete by mid July.
Fresh striping enhances visibility.
New Fees - Parking Lots and Gate Devices
Airport parking fees changed on July 1. New fees are:
Short-Term Parking: First 2 hours are free, $1.00 per ½ hour after the
first 2 free hours, with a max of $11.00 per day.
Long-Term Parking: $8.00 per day (24-hour period) and $56.00 per week.
Republic Parking manages parking at the Airport. As a reminder, if you
are parked in the short-term lot and are there for less than two hours, you do
not need to get your ticket validated by a parking attendant. Simply proceed
to the exit gate, insert your ticket into the ticket slot, and the gate will open for
you. If you have any questions regarding to parking, please contact Republic
Parking at 523-2186.
New signs in front of the Terminal
Gate Devices: On July 1 the cost of gate cards was increased to $15 each.
provide guidelines for parking.
Remotes will remain at $50 per access device.
Gate Procedures - Follow the Rules and Stay Safe!
As a reminder, tenants are required to remain at access gates once they pass through the gate and wait for it to close. No
tailgating through gates is allowed unless you are escorting someone. Tenants are responsible for any guests brought onto
Airport property, including those entering through pedestrian gates.
If a person that is aggressive or threatening tries to tailgate in behind you, or is otherwise refusing to abide by the
Airport gate rules, you are not required to remain at the gate or put yourself at risk. However, please take note of the person
and vehicle and contact the duty phone as quickly as possible (484-0236) and an Airport Operations Specialist will assist
you with the incident. If all Operation Specialists are unavailable (e.g. if Horizon Air is loading or unloading passengers, an
Operations Specialist is required to be at the firehouse in case of an emergency) and unable to assist you, please contact the
Sheriff ’s Department at 565-2121. Please be aware that TSA is monitoring security procedures and may impose a fine of up
to $20,000 for each infraction.
If you have questions about any of the above items please contact the Airport Manager’s Office at 565-7243.

Santa Rosa Jet Center - Change of Ownership
By Lidia Herbert, Sonoma County Airport
There are changes underway at one of the Airport’s FBOs. Apex
Aviation has recently been sold to Oakland-based KaiserAir, Inc., which
is the managing partner of Santa Rosa Jet Center (SRJC). Final lease
approval by the Board of Supervisors was on June 17. KaiserAir will
upgrade the current facilities to accommodate more business and the
expected completion date of all projects will be in roughly two years.
A variety of improvement projects are planned. Removal of the
existing underground fuel storage tanks was completed at the end of
April and new above ground tanks will be installed, including ones for
self-service. Other plans include the paving of existing ramp space in
order to accommodate heavier aircraft, renovation of the office for client
services, construction of an aircraft storage and maintenance hangar, and
various cosmetic refurbishments, such as painting and landscaping.
Along with the change of ownership, KaiserAir has also brought in
some new employees. Glenn Barrett, SRJC’s General Manager, is one of
the newcomers. He has been involved in aviation for roughly 40 years,
receiving his private license at the age of 16 and his commercial license
Renovated offices are planned
for client services.
at the age of 18. He has worked extensively in Flight Test and helped
to establish and manage an MRO in Mojave, CA. Glenn has been married for over 20 years and has three grown children.
When asked what he thought of STS, Glenn replied, “I think the Sonoma County Airport is a fantastic Airport and is in
a beautiful setting. I have found that the people here are absolutely wonderful and quite welcoming.” As for the future of
the Airport, Glenn expressed that he is excited for a positive change to occur and is grateful to have the opportunity to be
a part of it.

Santa Rosa Jet Center visit their website at www.santarosajetcenter.com (currently under construction). You can also reach
SRJC by phone at (707) 528-7400.
From the Archives of
Russell Etchell
Russell Etchell, longtime pilot, man about the
Airport, and aviation history buff, brought copies from
his collection of old Airport news stories to the Airport
Manager’s Office recently. We will print items from the
collection from time to time. From the archives:
Passengers boarding for an afternoon flight.
Horizon Air Numbers are Up
Horizon Air flew a record number of 22,051 passengers in
and out of the Airport in June. That number is up from 20,043 in
May, 16,365 in April, 15,381 in March, 12,981 in February, and
11,224 in January. Increased passenger numbers are due in part
because of the successful new Las Vegas service that began on
April 24. January and February are typically less active months.
The 2008 year-to-date total is 98,045.
October 9, 1942 - Ad for help in the Press Democrat:
Wanted - 50 laborers, wages of over $70 per week for
seven 10-hour days. Carpenters - 70 hours per week at
$1.43 per hour for first time and time and a half for over
time.
March 23, 1943 - Second Lt. Robert H. McCampbell
bailed out of his disabled fighter plane which landed in
an apple orchard near Sebastopol. He landed on the
Quartaroli Ranch near Lone Pine. His plane landed
in the orchard of Joseph Hoag, two miles east of Lone
Pine, and missed his house and garage by 50 feet. The
only injury he received was bruises when he scrapped
the plane as he bailed out.
