FIAB
The Spanish Food and Drink Industry Federation (FIAB), comprising
more than 40 member associations, represents, as a single body, the
Spanish food and drink industry: our country’s leading industrial sector.
Our mission is to be the engine of the economy, employment and Spain’s
image abroad, to be competitive in the global market and attract the
best talent, all based on the principles of safety, quality and scientific and
technological development.
The food and drink industry is today the number one industrial sector
in the country in terms of turnover, exceeding 93 billion euros in turnover in
the last financial year and almost 25 billion euros in exports. Moreover, the
food and drink industry directly employs close to 500,000 people in Spain
and 2.5 million indirectly.
Federation professionals work at national, European and international
level in areas such as food policy, nutrition and health, competitiveness
and sustainability, communication and member relations and business
development for the sector, specializing in three areas: international
expansion, R&D&I and finance and economic and talent Studies.
The sector plays an important role in the present and future of the
economy and Spanish society. That’s why, here at the FIAB, we have worked
to identify the main challenges ahead, identifying four key essentials for the
coming years that will boost the sector’s competitiveness: efficiency, value
creation, consolidation and international expansion.
On the other hand, the FIAB recognises the essential importance of
food for people’s development and that’s why we promote the advantages
of a moderate, balanced and varied diet accompanied by physical exercise
as the basis for health and well being. To this end, the FIAB organises and
promotes activities that contribute to the public adopting healthy lifestyle
habits, based on physical exercises and consideration of their diet as a
whole.
The Spanish food and drink industry is the engine of the country’s
economy and the image of Spain beyond our borders, acting as a cultural
flag, a mirror of the Mediterranean diet that represents us and a symbol of
quality, safety and expertise. That’s why the sector finds itself in the perfect
position to lead the Spanish industry of the future.

MAGRAMA
The Ministry for Agriculture, Food and Environment is
the competent department in the field of the General State
Administration for the proposal and implementation of the
Government policy en terms of the fight against climate change;
protection of the natural heritage, biodiversity and the sea; water;
rural development; agricultural resources; livestock and fisheries and
food.
The purpose of the new Ministerial set-up, is to provide a
suitable organization-based response to the framework in which the
community agricultural and fisheries policies will be developed, as
well as the food policy, whose responsibility it is to promote.
MEDITERRANEAN DIET
In November 2010, UNESCO recognised the Mediterranean Diet
as Intangible Cultural Heritage, considering how it represents a lifestyle,
philosophy and culture that is the fruit of our communities’ intercultural
relations throughout history and is transmitted from generation to
generation without interruption.
The Mediterranean Diet is the language of the people of the
Mediterranean, encompassing oral expressions and traditions, social
practices, rituals and festivities along with products, foods and the
formulas for preparing them.
Mediterranean cooking, led by Spain, is a wise combination of
ingredients that constitutes a model, balanced diet that is rich, complete
and healthy: highly regarded in gastronomic circles as a cultural flag
of the countries where it is practised and an example to others. The
Mediterranean Diet is a display of flavour, quality, variety, expertise and a
reflection of a healthy lifestyle.
