15 entertainment The Real World: Lincoln High School STATESMAN | October 27, 2006 This is the true story of 16 classmates picked because of their high test scores to become a semi-finalist and to find out what happens when one person outscores another and starts getting reAl! By Brianna Ellis and Briana Gust The ’06-’07 school year is back in session and this fall, millions of high school juniors across the country prepare for the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, otherwise known as PSAT/NMSQT. Not only does the test prepare the students for the SAT 1, the PSAT/NMSQT gives the test taker a chance to receive the National Merit Scholarship. The test measures math, reading and writing skills. LHS has 16 students, the same number as last year, who have achieved the National Merit Scholarship. Sarah Swenson Sarah Swenson is actively involved with oral interp, drama, tutoring, volunteering, Key Club and National Honor Society. Over her high school career she has taken 7 AP classes. Her phobia is dirty hotel rooms and she has a unique hidden talent of turning her hands purple. If she could be any color in a crayon box, she would be tickle-me-pink. Kyle Powers Someday hoping to get a full body cat suit tattoo, this Bob Saget fan is involved with debate, oral interp and Deutsch Club. Over his high school career he has taken 6 AP classes. Also known as “Hot Sauce,” Powers’ first kiss was Steffen Docken’s girlfriend. He collects huge muscles and would like to know if you would be his friend on Facebook. If Powers could give you one word of advice, he would say, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.” Alan Holdorf Renugan Raidoo This National Merit semi-finalist is involved with oral interp, debate, theater, Young Democrats, French Club, Bio Club, choir and tutoring. Over the course of his high school career he has taken 7 AP classes. In the shower, he enjoys singing “Sexyback” by Justin Timberlake. Something not many people know about Renugan is he does calligraphy and plays the flute. Janessa Nickell Elizabeth Wanous This non-handed pogo stick expert spends her time in marching band (color guard), church, choir, National Honor Society, and First Priority. Over her high school career she has taken 6 AP classes. Elizabeth, who does not believe in karma, says that a smile can make life better. Her greatest accomplishment was surviving a year in another country and coming back to her “home” that had changed without her. This National Merit semi-finalist spends her time in these extracurricular activities: oral interp, theater, Spanish Club, Ping Pong Club, Young Democrats, tutoring and volunteering. She has taken 8 AP classes over her high school career. When she was a child she related to Chuckie the most on the show “Rugrats,” as “That was definitely my awkward stage,” said Nickell. She does not have a favorite celebrity, but hates Paris Hilton. Daniel Rainbow This drum lesson teacher is involved with drumline, youth group and Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. Over his high school career he has taken 6 AP classes. As his friends call him, D.J. Rainbow plans to attend college. Santa Claus is his favorite celebrity and the greatest accomplishment he has ever received is playing with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps placing 2nd in the world and 1st in drumline. Xiang-Yu Chen This Barnes and Noble employee is involved with Ping Pong Club, Math Club, Chess Club, Young Democrats, LPEG, volunteer work and National Honor Society. Chen has participated in 9 AP classes over his high school career. He has a hidden talent of making amazing egg rolls. “Chenjamin” plans on attending college after high school and if you would like to be his first kiss, call 1-800-261-CHEN. Ryun Thronson Ryun Thronson, o t h e r w i s e k n ow n a s “GANGSTALICIOUS,” participates in debate, in-step tutoring and oral interp. Over his high school career he has taken 6 AP classes.
