Letter from the
Artistic Director
I
often say artists are used to being poor and creative. Our 2009-2010 season may have
shown signs of financial stress behind the closed doors of our offices and Board room, but
limited resources mixed with creativity resulted in a spectacular season of the highest quality. Partnerships were key to our success: PNB co-produced two new productions with
Louisville Ballet and San Francisco Ballet, partnered with Spectrum Dance Theater on an
outreach program and collaborated with Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra on an inspiring
year-end School Performance. The triumphs were not limited to the stage, with
achievements in marketing, fundraising, and our School.
A successful season kicked off with a festive opening night dinner, Prelude to a Kiss. Lean
economic times led us to the wise decision to avoid a lavish gala. The profitable event,
mixed with the welcome return of Jean-Christophe Maillot's Roméo et Juliette, started the
season off on the highest note. Revisiting Mopey and West Side Story Suite, alongside our first work by Jiri Kylian and a
world premiere by Val Caniparoli, made the November mixed repertory program a hit with audiences and critics alike.
Forty-five performances of Nutcracker may have been too many for the area's slow economic recovery. Though
performances were enchanting, ticket sales were lackluster. For the second year in a row, a Nutcracker revenue shortfall
threw a curveball into our fiscal plan. Executive Director David Brown once again guided us through the rationale behind
implementing extreme choices with clarity. Board leadership, Finance Committee, and the Governing Board provided
valuable support throughout.
January brought a sold-out, critically acclaimed tour to New York’s Joyce Theater, followed by a wildly popular, nineperformance run of Ronald Hynd's The Sleeping Beauty. We overachieved a high revenue goal for Beauty with a great
sigh of relief.
Trying to reduce costs for our Eyes on Dance performance of excerpts from The Sleeping Beauty, we exercised creativity
by performing with a chamber group of five musicians. Rather than canceling this community outreach performance
attended by thousands, we offered a fascinating look at the role that each individual musician and their instrument plays.
With the chamber ensemble raised to eye level, appreciation for live music was enhanced with the audience of children
drawn to the edge of the pit at intermission to see the instruments up close. I was impressed by each musician's kind
explanation and demonstration during their break. The performance was also made possible by the diligent hard work and
fundraising efforts of our unsinkable Outreach Manager, Kayti Bouljon.
In March, Three by Dove (and one by Victor Quijada) caused a stir and packed the hall with scores of new audience
members. We are proud to have won three awards this year from Teen Tix, the arts ticketing program that offers $5
tickets to events around town. Three by Dove was the favorite Teen Tix program in the city. Roméo et Juliette was the
highest attended Teen Tix performance and PNB won favorite arts organization! Couple those winnings with a Genius
Award from The Stranger and PNB borders on being cool.
The year ended beautifully with choreography by George Balanchine. Serenade, Square Dance, and The Four
Temperaments preceded a PNB premiere of Balanchine's Coppélia. Audiences were impressed by the splendor of our
new production. Great dancing and acting battled for attention with exquisite sets and costumes designed by Roberta
Guidi di Bagno. The yearlong work by our scenic and costumes shops deserves special mention. These individuals, like all
of us, were held to the strictest budgets. Careful planning and hours of hard work resulted in astounding beauty for this
new favorite production in PNB’s ever-expanding repertory.
It was also a year of diligent fundraising. With a goal of $1.6 million for our New Works Initiative, we had our work cut out
for us. Glenn Kawasaki’s much-appreciated gift started us off with confidence. Dan and Pam Baty, Sharon Richardson,
and the Apex Foundation helped us significantly. Creating Coppélia as a co-production with San Francisco Ballet helped

defray costs substantially. The widespread support from hundreds of members of our donor circle truly made the
difference. Support came from Board members, parents, and subscribers, each buying a book in our yearlong book
drive. For each $1,000 donation, a name was placed on the spine of a book in Dr. Coppelius' workshop. Through
creativity, we were able to make our challenging fundraising goal this year.
On June 19, McCaw Hall was the home of extraordinary children, with some 600 of our students gracing the stage with
uncanny talent and professionalism, while more than 60 members of Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra filled the pit
with harmony and gusto. These teenage talents caused us to see what the future holds for us, and I can tell you the
future is looking very bright.
Sincerely,
Peter Boal

Letter from the
Executive Director
Although “Excellence in the Performing Arts” remains our overriding mission imperative,
we have struggled this past year to capture the necessary resources to ensure that
excellence.
In contributions, beginning in the fall of 2008 with the demise of Washington Mutual and
continuing to the present, local corporate sponsorship and philanthropy has been in
significant decline. PNB raised in total nearly $800,000 from Corporations in 2009, but we
ended 2010 in the $635,000 range, a drop of more than 20%. Our longtime and largest
corporate partners continued at similar levels as in past years, but finding new or increased
gifts from corporations of any size has proven difficult at best.
The decline and partial rebound in market value of investments over the past 18 months
has reduced PNB’s endowment, putting at risk around $600,000 of heretofore safe and reliable funding for operations.
Although UPMIFA (the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act) enacted in Washington State last year
provided some relief for PNB in this area, we maxed out our annual support from the PNB Endowment even with the
UPMIFA flexibility. We should note, however, that even in this most difficult fundraising landscape, since 2008, PNB has
raised nearly $2 million in cash and pledges for PNB’s endowment.
Although City and County funding for PNB has remained steady through this period, the support from the Washington
State Arts Commission has dropped more than 50% over the past two years.
Nevertheless, It is our long time relationships with individuals that continue as strong as ever and it is individuals who
continue to provide more than 70% of PNB’s contributed revenue.
In earned revenue, PNB has experienced great variation in ticket sales since December of 2008 when consumer
confidence began to erode and job layoffs began in earnest. Over the past ten years, we have achieved our Nutcracker
sales goal seven out of ten years, with each year’s goal and achievement higher than the previous, but the December
2008 snowstorm significantly hurt our Nutcracker sales largely contributing to a $550,000 shortfall. That trend continued
this December when the full force of the recession on consumer confidence resulted in an even larger shortfall of $1.2
million in ticket sales in what has historically been PNB’s most reliable earned revenue vehicle.
PNB posted nearly three consecutive years of success (FY’05, 06, and 07) in achieving its single ticket sales goals for its
six other productions. Yet, since the fall of 2008, we have seen dramatic volatility in single ticket sales, even with liberal
discounting and promotions. Discounting has led to more tickets being sold, particularly as we focus promotions on
growing our under 35 target audience, but at a lower average price resulting in reduced revenue.
These declines in revenue have forced reductions in operations that include wage freezes and concessions from all of
PNB’s major labor unions, Dancers, Stagehands, and Musicians. Position eliminations, a wage freeze, and suspension of
a 4% 401(k) match of non-union employee contributions have reduced and weakened the ballet’s staff. And due to the
continuing shortfalls since last fall, two-week furloughs of all non-union staff were imposed over the final six months of
FY’10.
We have, however, capitalized on opportunities this year to co-produce productions with other ballet companies (San
Francisco Ballet and Louisville Ballet), which significantly reduced the cost of these new productions.
In FY 2000, PNB created its first cash reserve (Stabilization Fund) of $622,000, added $50,000 to it in FY’03, and again
added $328,000 in FY’08 bringing the total to $1 million. That discipline paid off when we needed to use the full value of
this cash reserve to offset FY’09’s operating deficit. Thankfully, PNB was able to add back $150,000 to the Stabilization
Fund at the end of FY’10.
10
Letter from the
Executive Director (continued)
For FY’10, we ended the year with a modest, hard won, but satisfying surplus of just over $28,000. That was primarily
due to a Board-led $150,000 Challenge Campaign resulting in an additional $190,000 in individual gifts, maximum use of
the flexibility of UPMIFA in gifting from our endowment, and more than $900,000 of difficult expense reductions. In
addition to the additions to the Stabilization Fund, and due in large part to the co-production funds for Coppélia, we were
able to defer $250,000 of the funds raised for New Works to future projects. And lastly, PNB was able to provide
additional earnings to staff who endured lost wages due to the furloughs imposed in the last six months of FY’10.
So consistent with our mission, we continue to strive for highest excellence; we continue to provide our audiences and
students with high quality dance experiences; we honor our promises to donors; we seek to manage our affairs with
careful planning and prudent decision-making; and perhaps most importantly, we choose to be optimistic.
Sincerely,
D. David Brown
Executive Director
11
Letter from the
Chairman
In
my last letter as Chairman of Pacific Northwest Ballet, I would like to focus on the
importance of leadership – of my fellow trustees and major donors, of PNB’s administrative
staff and department heads, and, finally, my own thoughts on the last few years. With another
very challenging year behind us, we should all be very proud of what PNB has accomplished
and realize that its success is wholly dependent upon the people who stepped forward to
take on the responsibility.
First, I would like to thank those PNB trustees and major donors who went above and
beyond their previous commitments of time and resources this year. These important people
lead by example and inspire the rest of the PNB community to stretch a little further and dig a
little deeper. In particular, I would like to specially recognize Glenn Kawasaki, Peter Horvitz,
Dan and Pam Baty, James and Sherry Raisbeck, Jeff and Susan Brotman, Bruce and Jolene
McCaw, and Sharon Richardson for their incredibly generous efforts this year. It is much easier to make decisions for an
arts organization in times of wealth than it is in times of economic difficulty. These individuals in particular have shown
great dedication to PNB and we are very lucky to count them as friends.
Next, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the PNB staff. We have nearly 60 employees on
staff at PNB who work very hard to bring our season to the stage. Following on the heels of an incredibly difficult 20082009 season, the PNB staff were once again asked to sacrifice more, to work harder and longer with fewer resources and
people. In addition to D. David Brown and Peter Boal, PNB has several fiercely dedicated department leaders – Randall
Chiarelli in Production, Larae Theige Hascall in Costume Shop, Debbi Lewang in Finance, Katherine Cardinal in
Development, Ellen Walker in Marketing, Denise Bolstad in PNB School, and Dawn Green in Human Resources. Despite
the almost overwhelming challenges presented this year, these individuals showed an exemplary level of dedication,
commitment, and sacrifice in their continuing support of our mission. I encourage everyone to see this as an illustration of
how crucial sound leadership is to an arts organization in times of great stress.
Finally, I have been fortunate to be PNB’s Chairman during both feast and famine. I vividly recall the incredible satisfaction
I felt when, during our 2007-2008 season, we far exceeded our goals for individual giving, the New Works campaign, and
single-ticket revenue, and the great honor it was to present two world premieres by Twyla Tharp in our 2008-2009
season. Every time I step into McCaw Hall and the curtain goes up, I feel immensely proud of my connection to this
wonderful organization. But the pride I feel at performances does not compare to that which I feel when the organization
as a whole works tirelessly to overcome adversity and, no matter the journey, steps forward into another year on solid
ground.
We start this next year with renewed strength and determination. You are a vital part of our organization and we thank
you for the passion and support you provide.
Sincerely,
Carl G. Behnke
Chairman, PNB Board of Trustees

Letter from the
President
Pacific Northwest Ballet’s 2009-2010 season was spectacular on many fronts. In a year with
significant economic challenges, closing the year with a surplus budget required a constant and
diligent focus by all of our staff and board. All the while, we continued to build our repertory of
full-length classics and contemporary new works, an important objective of PNB’s strategic
plan. By the end of Peter Boal’s fifth season at PNB, our company had added 56 new works to
our repertory under his leadership. This year held a first for Peter and PNB when he was able
to realize his dream of bringing a brand new production of George Balanchine’s Coppélia to
PNB, complete with stunning sets and costumes.
During the 2009-2010 season, the New Works Initiative at PNB raised $1.55 million from over
145 donors--by far, our most successful year for New Works fundraising. With a $1.3 million
fundraising target for a new Coppélia, we had no choice but to be bold with our requests and paint the vision for PNB’s
exciting future. It is clear that our northwest audiences respond to vibrant new work. Every year, more and more donors
are richly rewarded by personally participating with us in building our repertory. We value every gift received and are
thrilled to see our new works donor base continue to grow at every giving level. We would not be PNB without your
constant dedication to helping us grow and define Pacific Northwest Ballet. While the following list is not conclusive, this
year a very special thank you goes to the following passionate supporters of Pacific Northwest Ballet: Dan and Pam Baty,
Carl and Renee Behnke, Jeffrey and Susan Brotman, Ernie and Diane Burgess, Patty Edwards, Peter and Peggy Horvitz,
Glenn Kawasaki, Marcella McCaffray, Bruce and Jolene McCaw, and Sharon Richardson.
Dedicated tour funding allowed PNB to present two U.S. tours in 2009, and as you would expect, we were
enthusiastically received by our distant audiences. The ALL DOVE performances during the summer of 2009 at Jacob’s
Pillow were as celebrated moving and heralded as the magical Berkshire dance venue in which it took place. Then during a 5-performance run at The Joyce Theatre in January, our dancers stunned New York dance critics and patrons alike.
The ability to tour is vitally important for our Company. No patrons of PNB are more supportive of PNB’s touring efforts
than James and Sherry Raisebeck, who funded a significant portion of our Joyce tour. Touring raises the visibility of PNB
nationally, attracts important dance critics, inspires corporate sponsors, allows other dancers and choreographers to see
our Company, and forges a stronger bond between dancers and production staff.
No annual letter is complete without recognizing PNB’s corporate donors. Over the years we have stewarded important
relationships with many corporations in our community. Their unwavering support was especially important in a year of
continuing economic recovery. So many of our corporate funders continue to speak highly of the value received and
given through their support of PNB. Corporate contributions for PNB during the 2009-2010 season totaled $651,695.
As well, we received almost $518,000 from our in-kind donors, including media partners and vendors. Some of PNB’s
most significant support comes from such important organizations in our community as ArtsFund, The Boeing Company,
and Microsoft.
Lastly, a truly heartfelt thank you goes to each and every one of our artists and our staff. They continue to amaze and
inspire our audience, our donors, and our trustees. As we moved from 2009 to 2010, we continued to ask for expense
savings along the way, and they rose to every occasion without ever compromising the quality for which PNB is known. It
is clear that they made sacrifices for PNB; their unwavering commitment inspires us as trustees to continue our work and
as donors to fund their mission.
It takes a very appreciative and giving community to run a world-class ballet company. We promise to be diligent
stewards of your resources and continue to bring you excellence in all our work. Thank you for being our partners in
dance.
Sincerely,
Aya S. Hamilton

“A shining example of Pacific
Northwest Ballet at its best.”
~ The Gathering Note
Captivating its audience again, Pacific Northwest Ballet
opened its 37th season with Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Roméo
et Juliette. Combining avant-garde design, vivid expression,
and PNB dancers’ extraordinary artistry, this contemporary
ballet delivered a profound theatrical experience.
Choreographed to Prokofiev’s famous score and coached by
Maillot himself with several stagers from his Les Ballets de
Monte-Carlo, Roméo et Juliette premiered at McCaw Hall in
January 31, 2008.

PNB Artistic Director Peter Boal’s annual DIRECTOR’S CHOICE program featured two
masterpieces, Robbins’ West Side Story Suite and Goecke’s Mopey, both familiar to our audiences,
and highlighted the addition of two new works to the company’s repertory.
PNB introduced renowned choreographer Jiri Kylian to Seattle audiences with one of his signature
pieces, Petite Mort, a ballet for six men and six women that symbolically exude energy, silence, and
sexuality. DIRECTOR’S CHOICE was completed by the world premiere of Val Caniparoli’s The
Seasons, a magnificent ensemble work representing the four seasons.
Jiri Kylian's Petite Mort was generously underwritten by Jeffrey & Susan Brotman and Peter & Peggy Horvitz.
Val Caniparoli's The Seasons was generously underwritten by Glenn Kawasaki and Ernest & Diane Burgess.

this beloved fairy tale, thrilling and delighting
both young and old alike.”
~ Class Act Tutu & Dancewear
PNB’S winter season opened with
The Sleeping Beauty by Ronald
Hynd, who created it in 1993 for
the English National Ballet to mark
the centenary of composer
Tchaikovsky’s death. This
production has a lineage that
extends directly back to its original
choreographer, Marius Petipa.
Scenic and costume designer
Peter Docherty framed the stage
with romantically draped curtains,
ushering the audience into the
marble and gold-leaf palace where
the story takes place.
With over 30 leading roles to cast,
The Sleeping Beauty’s grand
staging represents a caliber of excellence reserved for the finest ballet companies and orchestras in
the world. From the evil fairy Carabosse’s flying entrance in the Prologue to the Rose Adagio’s
spectacular balances to Act III’s celebrated Bluebird pas de deux, Ronald Hynd’s choreography
offers a golden opportunity for dancers to showcase individual interpretation and technique.
Ultimately, the brilliance of The Sleeping Beauty rests with the role of Aurora, a genuine mark of
distinction for a great ballerina.

“The energy was loose and twisty…a sped-up chain of

~ The Seattle Times
Our March mixed repertory program featured three works by
the late choreographer Ulysses Dove (1947-1996): Vespers,
Red Angels, and the PNB premiere, and fourth Dove
acquisition, Serious Pleasures. The program also featured
Victor Quijada’s Suspension of Disbelief, choreographed for
Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2006. Much anticipation
surrounded the PNB premiere of Serious Pleasures in which
Dove portrays urban social issues of human isolation,
alienation and intersection in a series of athletic solos and
duets featuring Dove’s own fusion of ballet and modern
dance.
Serious Pleasures was made possible by the National Endowment
for the Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of
Artistic Genius. The PNB premiere of Ulysses Dove's Serious

The three works on PNB’s ALL BALANCHINE mixed bill celebrated 75 years of Balanchine in
America and exemplified the incredible range of the great choreographer’s work.
Serenade is a milestone in the history of dance as the first original ballet Balanchine created in
America. PNB introduced Serenade to its repertory in 1978, and its transcendent purity endures and
renews itself as a primary testament to the choreographer. Balanchine’s Square Dance is a buoyant
and intricate work that combines classical ballet with the patterns of 17th-century court dance and
American folk dance. The Four Temperaments is a series of plotless variations executed by dancers
in practice clothes on a bare stage. In this work, Balanchine fuses classical steps with a lean and
angular style, and proclaims a new era in ballet with some of the most uniquely evocative images
ever created.

“PNB’s ‘Coppélia’ charms with magical sets,
costumes and dancing.”
~ The Seattle Times
PNB concluded its 2009-2010 season and realized a fond aspiration of Artistic Director Peter Boal
with a beautiful new production of George Balanchine’s classic comic ballet, Coppélia. Based on
Balanchine’s memories of the Russian Imperial Ballet production, and staged in close collaboration
with the great dancer Alexandra Danilova, Coppélia has been called one of the happiest ballets in
existence. For its new production, PNB commissioned Italian scenic and costume designer Roberta
Guidi di Bagno, whose enchanting conceptions were previously admired by PNB audiences in The
Merry Widow. Based on the book by Charles Nuitter, Coppélia is considered a triumphant
masterpiece of comic timing and characterization. Enlightened by the wit and wisdom of George
Balanchine, Coppélia was an absolute delight to ballet newcomers and families, as well as PNB’s
most seasoned patrons.
Principal support for PNB’s premiere of George Balanchine’s Coppélia is provided by Glenn Kawasaki, Dan &
Pam Baty, Brady Richardson, and Maurice Kanbar.
George Balanchine’s Coppélia is a co-production
of Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco
Ballet.

PNB’s Nutcracker dazzled Northwest audiences
during the holiday season. The production’s brilliant
blend of costumes, sets, and choreography is unique
to Seattle and creates a magical world enjoyed by
children and adults alike. Founding Artistic Director
and choreographer Kent Stowell collaborated with
acclaimed children’s author and illustrator Maurice
Sendak to create Nutcracker in 1983. The entire
Company of professional dancers and over 200
students from PNB School danced in 45
performances of Nutcracker during the 2010 holiday
season. Audiences enjoyed PNB’s 27-foot mouse
king, the splendid Christmas tree that grows from 14
to 26 feet tall, the land of snow, and all the magical
characters in this special adaptation of a classic story.

DISCOVER DANCE Performance Partnership
With an increase in funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts, Pacific Northwest
Ballet was able to significantly increase the
number of schools and students reached
through DISCOVER DANCE in 2009-2010.
PNB partnered with seven Seattle and
Eastside schools: Alternative School #1, Arbor
Heights Elementary, Broadview Thomson K-8,
Daniel Bagley Elementary, Graham Hill
Elementary, Highland Park Elementary (Seattle
Public Schools), and Eastgate Elementary
(Bellevue School District).
Nearly 600
students from these schools participated in
long-term, in-school dance residences, visits
to PNB’s Phelps Center, and attended a PNB
matinee of The Sleeping Beauty, all at no cost
to students. The expansion also allowed for
the addition of a Fall DISCOVER DANCE
Community Performance, along with the
continuation of the annual Spring
performance, in which residency students
performed their original choreography.
Performances took place on November 14,
2009 and April 24, 2010.
In addition, over 50 students from Graham Hill
Elementary worked with visual artists Darwin
Nordin and Adrien Miller to design and create
backdrops for the performance. The
performances also featured short excerpts
performed by PNB Company dancers, REACH
Student Dance Group, and live musical
accompaniment from the Graham Hill
Elementary Chorus, Broadview Thomson K-8
Music Program, and The New Seattle
Percussion Trio.
EYES ON DANCE
PNB’s annual EYES ON DANCE performance
was held February 12, 2010, and brought
2,498 students to McCaw Hall for excerpts of
The Sleeping Beauty. The hour-long matinee
included open set changes, a lighting
demonstration, and live music by PNB
musicians, and was emceed by PNB School
Eastside Principal and former PNB dancer
Nicholas Ade.
The EYES ON DANCE program also offered
pre-performance and post-performance
in-school workshops for both The Sleeping
Beauty and Nutcracker (910 students).

REACH Student Dance Group
PNB continued a partnership with Spectrum
Dance Theater for REACH Student Dance
Group.
REACH offered two eight-week
sessions in different dance styles and was
open to youth ages eleven to fifteen. PNB
Community Education Programs Coordinator
Shannon Barnes and Spectrum Dance
Theater Director of School and Outreach
Shawn Hensley oversaw the recruitment and
hiring of guest artists Rex Kinney (hip-hop
dance) and Bahia In Motion (Afro-Brazilian
dance). REACH performed original
choreography created by these guest artists
during the DISCOVER DANCE Community
Performances at McCaw Hall on November
14, 2009, and April 24, 2010 (29 students).
In addition to the 19 DISCOVER DANCE
classrooms that participated in PNB Fieldtrips,
Community Education Programs staff and
faculty also conducted PNB Studio Tour
Fieldtrips for seventeen Seattle area
classrooms (445 students) in the 2009-2010
season. During the fieldtrips, participants
observed PNB Company dancers in rehearsal,
took an introductory dance class, and
engaged in discussions about ballet, including
an opportunity to see and learn about
costumes and pointe shoes up-close.
Other In-School Projects
PNB held workshops and short residencies at
seven area schools/centers: Chestnut Hill
Academy (20 students), Ballinger Family
Support Center (30 students), University Child
Development School (25 students), Alcott
Elementary (25 students), Sweet Pea Cottage
Preschool (50 students), Phantom Lake
Elementary (175 students), and two Bright
Horizons Preschools (75 students).
Other activities
PNB offered several professional development
opportunities for classroom teachers this year.
Community Education Programs staff and
teaching artists held workshops for all staff
and faculty at Broadview Thomson K-8 (60
teachers) and Alternative School #1 (15
teachers). PNB also offered preview event

SPECIAL EVENT
HIGHLIGHTS
On September 24, 2009, guests were invited
to attend Prelude to a Kiss: An Opening Night
Celebration. This festive evening, held on the
opening night of Jean-Christophe Maillot’s
Roméo et Juliette, allowed attendees the
opportunity to celebrate the opening of the
2009-2010 season. Peter Boal’s exclusive
announcement of Company dancer
promotions added another exciting element to
the evening. Sponsored by The Boeing
Company, Wells Fargo, UW Medicine,
Goldman, Sachs & Co., and Puget Sound
Energy, Prelude to a Kiss raised $13,500 for
PNB.
The Nutcracker Brunch, a favorite holiday
tradition at the ballet, was held on November
28, 2009. Hosted by PNB League, the Brunch
featured crafts and entertainment for children,
a delicious brunch, and a mini performance of
the Nutcracker. With 260 guests in
attendance, the event raised $3,000 for PNB
League.
The seventh annual Winter Wonderland Ball
was hosted by principal dancer Mara Vinson
and her family on January 31, 2010. Three
hundred guests enjoyed music, dance
classes, delicious food, a silent auction, and
appearances by PNB dancers in the beautifully
transformed Francia Russell Center. A new
PNB’s young professionals group, Backstage
Pass, hosted their sixth annual Backstage
Bash on March 26, 2010. An 80’s inspired
theme, When Doves Fly, found guests dressed
to the nines and dancing the night away with
PNB dancers while enjoying hors d’oeuvres
and drinks backstage.
The glassybaby fundraising event in support of
PNB School was a great success in its
inaugural year. Attendees were invited to
glassybaby’s glass-blowing workshop for a
behind the scenes look at how their beautiful
pieces are created. During the afternoon, all
70 guests enjoyed cupcakes and wine and
each took home a keepsake glassybaby for
themselves. The event, chaired by Gigi
Wallace, raised over $5,000 for PNB School.
On June 19, 2010, students, parents, donors,
and teachers gathered for the second annual
School Celebration Dinner. Held between the
two School Performances, the dinner
celebrated the students’ accomplishments
and honored those students who moved on
from PNB School this year. Sponsored by
Freed of London, the Celebration Dinner
raised $6,500 for PNB School.

Letter from the
PNB Foundation Chairman
Pacific Northwest Ballet Foundation has been key to the financial success of Pacific
Northwest Ballet Association and remains an integral part of PNB’s organizational
stability. The PNB Foundation manages our investments to earn income that will
generate funds for the Association while also increasing the value of the
endowment.
In the fiscal year 2010, Pacific Northwest Ballet Foundation received $111,618 in
new gifts, pledges, and bequests.
With these donations, assets under
management total $10,534,658 (NOTE: The total of $12,537,811 indicated below
includes receivables which cannot be invested until they are paid to PNB
Foundation by the donor). This year, the endowment included a 9.3% return on
invested funds. This return allowed PNB Foundation to make an extraordinary gift of
$790,000 to the Association in fiscal year 2010 while staying within the guidelines of
The Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA). This gift
demonstrates that PNB Foundation upholds its responsibility to make responsible financial decisions to
preserve the endowment corpus, ensuring the Foundation’s ability to provide long term support to PNB.
I want to thank all of our donors for understanding the importance of building the PNB endowment. Your
generosity allows PNB to create dynamic new works, maintain beloved classics, attract and retain the best
artists, and provide high quality dance education and outreach programming to our community. Thank you for
your dedication and belief in Pacific Northwest Ballet.
Sincerely,
Peter Horvitz
Chairman, PNB Foundation

DONOR
RECOGNITION
Pacific Northwest Ballet depends on great
partnerships onstage and off. We are deeply
grateful for your committed partnership
throughout the 2009-2010 season.
Your
generous gifts provide PNB the resources to
thrive—from the everyday necessities like
pointe shoes to the extraordinary costumes
created in the PNB premiere of Coppélia.
In addition, our donors help PNB’s excellent
educational programming reach thousands of
young people every year. We salute you for
your commitment and support.
Corporate Giving
William Randolph Hearst Foundation. From
government sources, PNB raised $417,678.
Foundation and government contributions are
designated toward specific programs and
general operating expenses.
Individual Giving
During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, individual
donors contributed $4,306,195 in support to
the Annual Fund. Annual Fund contributions
support numerous facets of PNB including:
general operating support, PNB School,
DanceChance, Scholarships, New Works, and
Community Education Programs.
During the 2010 fiscal year, corporate support
totaled $651,695, a 18.5% decrease from
fiscal year 2009 due to the economic decline.
Corporate gifts are received in several forms,
including sponsorships and corporate
foundation gifts. Corporations also contributed
over $518,000 of in-kind gifts of goods and
services.
Foundation and Government Giving
Foundation support in the 2010 fiscal year
totaled $599,571. Major foundation donors
included Wallace Foundation, PONCHO, and

DONOR
CHALLENGE

Pacific Northwest Ballet was not immune to the effects of the economic recession. PNB
made carefully considered adjustments, yet with ticket sales and donations impacted
significantly, we needed to close the funding gap for the end of our fiscal year.
In April 2010, two longtime PNB supporters anonymously pledged $150,000 to match
contributions made to PNB by the end of our fiscal year to bridge this funding gap. This
generous challenge initiated great support in return.
By June 30th, PNB not only met but exceeded this goal! With $191,500 raised directly in
response to the challenge, each and every gift was matched dollar for dollar – and we
successfully closed our gap in funding.
This aggressive challenge was met by countless PNB supporters. This vital funding
ensures the future of important initiatives such as New Works and Live Music, and funds
education and outreach programs benefitting thousands of children and adults
throughout our community.
