Our Health is a Jewel with Many Facets
This fall the Salt Lake County
Health Department released a
community health report that
includes information about South
Salt Lake residents’ health factors,
including heart disease, diabetes,
obesity rates, and overall fitness
levels and nutritional habits.
December 4th and 5th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (see page 8
for details and to RSVP). I strongly encourage your participation.
According to the report, our
residents are more likely to have
issues with mental health when
compared to other communities
across the state. South Salt
Lake Police Officers who
Mayor Cherie Wood
were surveyed supported this
information by estimating that mental health and substance abuse
are the root cause of up to 90% of the incidents to which they
respond.
Research supports that you can improve the health of your brain by
“giving it a workout." According to About Health, there are several
ways to keep your brain healthy and active; many are simpler than
you’d think.
Mental health impacts the quality of life of our entire community,
including families, neighbors, co-workers and friends. It is among
the top priorities of two of the seven Promise South Salt Lake
Councils—the Health Council (partnering with the South Salt Lake
Coalition for Drug Free Youth) and the Safety Commission.
Through a partnership with the National Alliance for the Mentally
Ill (NAMI) Utah, we are offering courses in Mental Health First
Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), a suicide prevention
program. These free classes are nationally recognized models,
and the skills learned can be used in a variety of settings. The
Mental Health First Aid classes will be held Thursday and Friday,
Improving physical health often has mental health benefits as
well. The Recreation Department and Promise South Salt Lake
Neighborhood Centers offer health and fitness activities including
yoga and Zumba. The Columbus Senior Center offers a wide
variety of activities for health conscious seniors.
The About Health Top 10 List to Keep Your Brain Healthy:
1. Play Games
2. Meditate
3. Eat “brain healthy” super foods
4. Write and share stories of your experiences
5. Watch less television
6. Exercise your body to exercise your brain
7. Read something new
8. Learn a new skill or hobby
9. Change up your daily routine
10. Practice using your memory, visualization, and reasoning
As your mayor, I hope you will strive to make a positive difference in
the life of someone in our community. Let’s encourage each other
to seek help if needed, to listen to someone that is experiencing
emotional distress, and to learn more about what we can do to
help someone who is struggling.

Playworks at Roosevelt Elementary
Playworks Utah is thrilled to partner with Roosevelt Elementary this school year. Playworks is a national non-profit
organization that believes in the power of play to bring out the best in every kid.
The Playworks AmeriCorps member at Roosevelt, Ken Hartman, spends over 40 hours a week at Roosevelt engaging
kids in games like 4-square, wall ball, lightning, and sharks and minnows during recess. In addition, he meets regularly with each
classroom for a game-based class. Playworks also features a youth leadership program and developmental sports leagues.
When Playworks partners with a school, the school recognizes a wide variety of positive impact. Bullying decreases by up to 43%, kids
feel safer at school, teachers gain back 21 hours of instructional time, and the level of vigorous physical activity increases by 43% as
well.
To volunteer and support Playworks at Roosevelt, contact Jaime Pimsler at [email protected] or 385.200.1545.

What Do You Need to Enroll In a Health Insurance Plan?
Medicaid or CHIP Enrollment:
1. Birthdates, names, and Social Security numbers for everyone applying
2. Pay stubs from the last three months for anyone working in the household
3. Information about health insurance offered through any job
Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment:
1. Birthdates, names, and Social Security Numbers for everyone applying
2. Information about health insurance offered through any job
3. Estimated annual household income (to see if you qualify for subsidies)
For more information go to takecareutah.org
Questions to consider when selecting a plan in the Health Insurance Marketplace this enrollment
season:
1. Do you have a primary doctor that you want to continue seeing? If so make sure that the plan you choose covers the doctors
or hospitals you want to access.
2. If you foresee a lot of medical expenses this year then you may want to pick a plan with a lower out-of-pocket maximum. You
might want to pick a certain plan even though it has a higher monthly cost. Think about what will save you money in the long
term, not just the immediate.
3. Do you take any prescription drugs regularly? All plans have coverage for prescription drugs, however each plan allocates
different amounts of money to different costs. Check the plan’s brochure to see how each plan divides up the coverage so you
can pick a plan that is specific to your needs.
For more information go to takecareutah.org or call 2-1-1.
South Salt Lake Health Access Committee at Work
The South Salt Lake Health Access Committee, comprised of local health professionals,
recently discovered that many residents are not aware of healthcare resources available
to them or their families. The committee is working to create a health resource flowchart
for teachers, religious leaders, outreach specialists, and anyone else, so they can quickly
direct residents to a healthcare provider that best suits their needs. For example, if someone
does not have health insurance, they could reference the chart and see that the Maliheh
Free Clinic accepts patients and provides options for them. The Health Access Committee is
actively working to make this flowchart a reality. The goal is to make healthcare accessible,
affordable, and a rewarding experience for everyone in South Salt Lake.

Fast Facts About Fire
• About half (48%) of home
electrical fires involve electrical
distribution or lighting equipment. Other leading types of
equipment are washer or dryer,
fan, portable or stationary
space heater, air conditioning
equipment, water heater, and
range.
• Electrical failure or malfunctions cause an average of
almost 48,000 home fires per
year, resulting in roughly 450
deaths and nearly $1.5 billion in
direct property damage.
• From 2007-2011, candles
caused 3% of home fires, 4% of
home fire deaths, 7% of home
fire injuries, and 6% of direct
property damage from home
fires.
• On average, there are 32 home
candle fires reported per day.
More than one-third of these
fires (36%) start in a bedroom;
however, the candle industry
found that only 13% of candle
users burn candles in a bedroom most often.
• Nearly three in five candle fires
(56%) start when things that
can burn are too close to the
candle.
This information was provided
by the National Fire Protection
Association. To learn more about
fire protection and prevention, visit
their website, nfpa.org.
The Health Insurance Marketplace Provides Options
The Health Insurance Marketplace allows people
to receive health insurance regardless of preexisting conditions or gender, facts that previously excluded many people from getting the
care they needed in the past. This marketplace
allows some people the opportunity to receive
health insurance for the first time in their lives. A person looking to sign up for
healthcare may pick which plan best suits their needs and then pay the corresponding monthly premium. Depending on your annual income, you may
even qualify for a discount on the monthly premium payment. The enrollment
season is from November 15, 2014 through February 15, 2015. If you feel lost
about where to begin the enrollment process, visit takecareutah.org for free
assistance or call United Way’s 2-1-1 to find available local resources.

Rick & Shannon Nielsen
Jeff Lewis
Shannon & Rick Nielsen have been married for 14 years, and
Rick has lived in his South Salt Lake home his whole life. He has
seen the area change a lot, but Shannon and Rick love the city’s
diversity and business accessibility. “It’s just convenient,” Shannon said. They love their yard, which started as weeds and junk
trees, but is now replanted and complete with patio, garden, selfbuilt garden shed, and even a hot tub.
Travis & Jeff also enjoy their yard, especially sitting on their patio
and enjoying the sun. Jeff said he loves working in the yard because it clears his mind. Their yard has crab-apple trees, ivy, and
a variety of other plants. They’ve only lived in South Salt Lake
since May of this year, but so far they’ve been impressed with
the city’s progressive attitude, especially toward homeowners.
Future beautiful yards will be featured in upcoming editions of the On the Move City Newsletter. To nominate a beautiful yard in your
neighborhood, contact RaeLin Gallegos at 801.464.6712 or [email protected].

The Pioneer Craft House organization began in 1947, and relocated
to its current location at the Historic Scott School in 1951. South Salt
Lake historians are attempting to identify the people in this photo taken

South Salt Lake Chamber Update
Wasatch Bike Park: The Chamber welcomed a new business in the city – an indoor bike park. They
have an indoor wood “pump track,” a skills room, and an air bag coming soon for practicing jumps. The
facility, located at 815 West 2400 South, was opened by Spencer Randle and his colleague, Brad Aune,
with assistance from the Utah Veteran Owned Business Partnership program. The Salt Lake Chamber,
Mayor Ben McAdams, and Governor Gary Herbert celebrated the opening on October 26. It is now open
for parties, skills classes and free-ride sessions. See more at wasatchbikepark.com.
Spice Kitchen: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) works with thousands of new Americans
who have resettled in Salt Lake City. They assist many of these refugee families with their basic needs
while they become accustomed to a new country and get into jobs, schools and a new social circle. IRC
is proud to announce a new initiative helping entrepreneurs start their own food business. Participants
receive technical assistance and training, have affordable access to commercial kitchen space and learn
the steps to establish a successful food business. Their new Spice Kitchen Incubator opened in South
Salt Lake on November 12, 2014. Many new Americans open culinary businesses in
South Salt Lake and share the flavors of their culture with the city.
Prestman Auto: On October 18, Prestman Auto celebrated the opening of their new auto service center, which
joins its highly-successful auto sales division. The crew hosted a family-friendly event with food, fun, and giveaways,
along with a classic and exotic car show. The business owners take pride in offering car buyers fast, fun, and exciting
vehicles at affordable prices – and they love to have a good time, too.

Facts About Giving
Enrich Yourself through Community Education
By Toni Berger, Granite Peaks Lifelong Learning Coordinator
Did you know that over 300 community education
classes are being held right in your own neighborhood?
Granite Peaks Lifelong Learning is an organization that
provides opportunities for people of all ages to learn
new skills, develop hobbies, explore personal interests,
and meet new people.
• Total giving to charitable
organizations was $335.17
billion in 2013 (about 2% of
GDP). This is an increase of
4.4% from 2012. This is the
fourth straight year that giving
has increased.
• After a successful inaugural
effort during the fall of 2012,
a unique giving experience
will take place again this year
on December 2nd, 2014. It is
called #GivingTuesday and it is
catching on across the country
and around the world. This
movement aims to set aside a
day dedicated to giving, similar
to how Black Friday and Cyber
Monday have become days that
are synonymous with holiday
shopping.
Our classes are diverse and constantly changing. We
offer everything from Spanish to Cake Decorating to
Dog Training to Ghost Hunting. New classes are added all the time. Underwater-basket weaving? Coming
soon!
Classes are held at six local high schools: Cottonwood,
Skyline, Connection, Hunter, Taylorsville, and Granger.
Our instructors are highly qualified and have a passion
for both their subject and our community.
For more information about current and upcoming classes, visit granitepeaks.org. Find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter for

2014 Community Connection Review
By Glenn Smith, South Salt Lake Urban Livability Director
As 2014 comes to an end, we reflect back on the projects that Community Connection completed this year. The focus area was from
2700 South to Garden Avenue, from State Street to 300 East. As the warm weather came, so did the volunteers, many who returned
to South Salt Lake to help again this year. Nearly 1,500 people volunteered, equating to approximately 5,300 hours of service, valuing
close to $120,000.
Over 25 separate projects were completed throughout South Salt Lake, including new roofs, a community mural, landscaping at Central
Park, and cleanup of many yards and properties. Many not only gave of their time, but donated materials to help fund the projects they
worked on. Transformations took place in the neighborhood after each project was completed.
Thank you to all of the volunteers and donors. Without each and every one, none of this would have been possible, and we would not
have had the success we were able to achieve. A heartfelt thank you to all our volunteer groups and donors. Without you, none of our work would be possible. Special thanks to

Services charities were up
2.2% to $41.51 billion.
-- Foundations saw an increase
of 15.5% to $35.74 billion.
-- Health charities experienced
an increase of 6% to $31.86
billion.
-- Charities that focus on the
environment / Animals saw
an increase of 7.5% to $9.72
billion.
• The wealthiest Americans are
giving a smaller share of their
income to charity, while poor
and middle-income people
are digging deeper into their
wallets, according to a new
Chronicle analysis of IRS data
that shows how charitable
giving has been changed by the
Great Recession.
-- The wealthiest Americans—
those who earned $200,000
or more—reduced the share
of their income they gave to
charity by 4.6 percent from
2006 to 2012.
-- Meanwhile, Americans who
earned less than $100,000
(including poor and middleclass families with two
working adults) donated 4.5
percent more of their income
in 2012 than in 2006.
• 7 out of 10 charities spend at
least 75% of their budget on
the programs and services they
exist to provide. And 9 out of 10
spend at least 65%.
• A donor can make a more
significant impact by
contributing directly to a
well-researched charity rather
than buying a charity-affiliated
product.

1. In order to increase the participation of women in mathematics, science, and engineering careers, there must be an increase in the
pool of qualified women.
2. In order for young women to have the option to enter mathematics, science and engineering careers, they need to choose to take
the appropriate mathematics and science courses in high school.
3. Intervention strategies are needed to increase the participation of girls in mathematics by nurturing enjoyment and confidence in mathematics, by connecting the value of mathematics to career opportunities, by
providing career role models, and by actively encouraging girls to persevere in mathematics coursework.

Can life in Utah get better as the population gets bigger? Envision
Utah is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization committed to exploring the challenges and opportunities of growth in Utah.
The organization brings together citizens from across the state
and gives them a voice to create and sustain communities that
are beautiful, prosperous, healthy and neighborly. With the right
vision, Utah’s growing economy and increasing population can be
accommodated without sacrificing the incredible quality of life that
makes Utah great.
With Utah’s population projected to grow by 2.5 million in the next
three decades, Envision Utah created the “Your Utah, Your Future”
project, a statewide process that invites the public to get involved
and decide how Utah will grow. Their goal is to make history by
involving 50,000 Utah citizens and use the results to create a voice
for the future that's strong enough to drive positive action.
