Charitable IRA rollover can pay off
in more ways than one
Giving for the greater good
Provided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas J. Powers
If you have a traditional IRA, your money can grow on a tax-deferred basis, but sooner or later you’ll have
to start taking taxable withdrawals from your account. But what if you could make these withdrawals
less “taxing,” while at the same time supporting a charitable group? Using a Charitable IRA rollover,
you can do just that!
Charitable contributions can be an excellent way to reduce your
tax burden as well as share your wealth and success for the
greater good. With some wise planning, charitable giving can
be a powerful financial tool. Your generosity may have a greater
impact than you might anticipate — creating some desirable tax
advantages for you.
Call us today at (727) 502-3656 for a
complimentary consultation.
To begin with, the basic rule governing traditional IRA withdrawals is that you must start taking them
once you reach age 70-1/2. Even if you don’t need the money to support your lifestyle, you have to take
something, with the exact amount determined by your account balance and your life expectancy. And
whatever amount you take is taxable.
Or, at least, it would be taxable if you took the money, even if you immediately invested it in another taxadvantaged vehicle. But there’s another possibility: If you’re at least 70-1/2, you can make a charitable
IRA rollover
by transferring your withdrawals directly into a “public” charity, such as a college, hospital or religious
organization. You can move up to $100,000 per year this way, and you can divide your contributions
among as many charities as you like.
The charitable IRA rollover has been around for several years, but it was only made permanent in
late 2015, when President Obama signed it into law, retroactive to Jan. 1, 2015. So, now you can take
advantage of this strategy year after year. And when you do, you’ll gain these benefits:

• You’ll avoid taxes on your IRA withdrawals. If your required IRA withdrawals are large enough,
they could potentially force you into a higher tax bracket during your retirement years. A charitable IRA
rollover can possibly help you avoid this issue because you won’t have to pay taxes on your withdrawals.
• You may be able to avoid cuts to Social Security benefits. Depending on your income, you might
have to pay federal income taxes on your Social Security benefits. By taking advantage of a charitable IRA
rollover, however, you may be able to avoid increasing your taxable income, which, in turn, could help
you prevent
a decrease in
your Social
Security
benefits.
5/16/16 12:13 PM
• You could protect some itemized deductions. If your adjusted gross income
(AGI) exceeds certain levels, you may have to reduce the amount of itemized
deductions you can claim on your tax return. So, as is the case with Social Security
benefits, the income you don’t accept from IRA withdrawals – sending it instead to
a charity – can help you keep your AGI down, which may protect you from losing
some itemized deductions.
Keep in mind, though, that this strategy is generally most appropriate for investors
with traditional IRAs. If you have a Roth IRA, and you’ve had your account at
least five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you reach age 59-1/2,
your withdrawals are free of federal taxes and the issue of taxable distributions
doesn’t apply. Additionally, you’re never required to take
withdrawals from a Roth IRA; you can leave the account
intact for virtually as long as you like.
Also, it’s important to note that this type of charitable
rollover doesn’t apply to other retirement accounts, such as
a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. However, you
may be able to transfer assets from your 401(k) or other plan
to your traditional IRA, and, from there, make the charitable
IRA rollover.
New
You’ll want to consult with your tax advisor before moving
any of your IRA withdrawals to a charity. But if such an
action is appropriate for your situation, give it some
consideration. By helping to control your taxes and protect
Social Security benefits and itemized deductions, while
simultaneously contributing to a charity whose work you
support, a charitable IRA rollover can pay off in more ways
than one.

IT’S WELL WORTH THE TRIP FROM ANYWHERE!
Residents Can Help Prevent Sewer Overflows During Rain Events
By Shannon N. Herbon
Tampa Bay area residents are well aware that, along with sunshine and sunscreen, most summer afternoons feature a brief, but heavy
rainstorm. Florida’s rainy season runs from June through October and accounts for 70 percent of Florida’s annual rainfall.
When the Bay area experiences record rainfall, storm water management systems can become overburdened. Extreme rain events can
stress wastewater sewer systems resulting in sanitary sewer overflows due to the sheer volume of excess water.
Storm water can penetrate the wastewater sewer system through leaky manhole covers, cracked or broken sewer pipes, and unauthorized
connections between sewer pipes and storm water pipes. When a sewer system is over capacity, it can overflow into the environment.
An average household of four can produce as much as 400 gallons or more of wastewater per day. Residents can help avoid an
overflow by following these tips around their home to put less water in the sewer system, especially during heavy rains.
•
•
•

•
•
•
•
•
Do not water the lawn if it is raining.
Check underground wastewater pipes of homes built before 1985. Many homes built prior to 1985 were
built with clay pipes or Orangeburg pipes, which are made only of paper and tar. Also, check your cleanouts
to make sure the caps are on securely.
Postpone doing loads of laundry and dishes during periods of heavy rainfall, if possible. Remember
that all dish and laundry wastewater gets sent to wastewater treatment plants that may already be dealing
with excess water.
Add mulch to reduce evaporation. Mulching reduces water needed in a garden by as much as 50 percent.
It also has the added benefit of preventing weed growth, deterring pests, stabilizing soil temperature and
providing nutrients to the soil as it decomposes.
Harvest rain to water flower beds, herb gardens and potted plants. Rain is free and beneficial for plants
because it does not contain hard minerals.
Choose native plants that are adapted to the area because they need less water.
Check hose and sprinkler connections for leaks – a drop wasted each second can add up to a couple of
gallons each day.
On slopes, plant native species that will retain water and help reduce runoff.
Irrigate your lawn with reclaimed water. To find out if reclaimed water is available in your neighborhood, contact your utility company.
Most importantly, never let your children or grandchildren play in flood waters; it is simply unsanitary.
Conserving water during a flood may sound counterintuitive, but it can make a huge difference when wastewater treatment facilities are at capacity. Water conservation
protects an essential resource, and it can also protect our homes and our environment from sewer overflows. For more information on storm water safety, visit dep.state.fl.us.

Ask The Doctor Genetic Testing May Be Beneficial to You
John D. Young, M.D.
My practice is always interesting. It seems I never get the plain old sore throat problem. Most of
my cases are of the complicated type. But I have found out over the years that if you stick with the
Foundational Health Center basics i.e. Physiology, biochemistry and now I’ll add genetics a lot of these tough cases can become
Largo, FL
more solvable.
727-545-4600
A person came to see me about a year ago; their balance was off a bit and they were tired. Now this
person was about 70 and I thought that is not that surprising, but as I examined him he definitely
was off balance and rather weak. I had him run a number of labs but everything the labs showed
was great. As I would see this patient over the month they just kept getting weaker and weaker. I
referred him to a specialist and they said they couldn’t find anything wrong. The neurologist felt he may have some form of Lou Gehrig’s
disease; but the only abnormality he could find was a greatly elevated Vitamin B12 level. Over the months I tried many different treatments
John D Young, M.D.
but nothing helped. So we decided to break him down genetically. He had a deficit at MTHF. To fix their gene or find the secondary pathway
to fix the genetic deficit we gave him methyl folate and methylated B12. He proceeded to have a seizure. So we looked at the metabolized B12
and sure enough he has a genetic deficit at a gene called TCNO2 so he could not absorb Methyl B12. However, if he could take the adenosine B12 he could absorb B12. So
he started adenosine B12 and several months later he was out of his wheelchair and his muscle mass returned. He never had Lou Gehrig’s disease; he just needed the right
form of Vitamin B12. Only his genetic code could tell us that. How many so called chronic illnesses may be only a simple genetic fix?
www.YoungFoundationalHealthCenter.com
A gentleman who suffered with depression and anxiety came to us because nothing helped. The drugs did nothing. His mother had depression and anxiety as did his daughter so we
decided to break him down genetically and he had a COMT and MAO and MTHFR. Together
these defective genes can give one anxiety and depression. We reworked the genetic pathways
of these genes and figured out the fix; a few days later no more depression and anxiety. All is
well until his GI doctor put him on Nexium which would counter act our fix. 1 hour later all
his symptoms returned. Nexium you see stops a number of genetic pathways and can make
depression and anxiety worse. We stopped the Nexium and he recovered.
Next time you feel you just aren’t better, have your doctor break you down genetically. You
may be surprised by the results.

LIVE PURE NUTRITION – Pure • Potent • Practical
My name is Elaine Allen and I represent a Whole Health Company. My personal story is that I had always
struggled with my weight and also had lack of energy. I drank up to two pots of coffee per day and also drank
energy drinks in order to increase my energy level. I also exercised, and thought I made healthy choices,
but was not having any success … the only thing I experienced was “rushed energy with crash…” and Yo
Yo weight loss.
Through the philosophy of “Whole Health” I was able to lose 45 pounds, drop from a size 11 to a size 6 and
lose 12 inches on my body. I have increased my energy level and at the age of “almost 50” am able to run
circles around people ½ my age. I achieved this success without additional exercise, shakes and diet pills.
Why did I have such GREAT success? This success was due to three things that I did daily to my body.
1) CLEANSE. I cleansed and detoxed my body (without bathroom emergencies) of environmental and other toxins.
2) BALANCE. I balanced my PH and hormones.
3) BUILD. I built my body up with good nutrition in the form of a liquid vitamin.
It is here at LIVE PURE NUTRITION where you can begin your journey to Whole Health. It’s time to make your body a top priority, to maximize our full potential, and to
rediscover a balanced lifestyle. Whole Health is just as much a way of life as it is what you feed your body. We believe in giving the body what it needs to thrive with quality
products that support nutrition, performance, beauty and life balance.
Our products work together, complementing and supporting each other to maximize their effectiveness and bring you the best results possible. And, they are unmatched in

CHINA IN SPACE... LOWDOWN ON ZIKA... AND MORE...
CHINA IN SPACE... China wants to put astronauts on the moon by 2036. The Asian nation, in 2003, became the third country to put a man in
space with its own rocket after the former Soviet Union & the United States. It has touted its plans for moon exploration & in late 2013 completed
the first lunar “soft landing” since 1976 with the Chang’e-3 craft & its Jade Rabbit rover. The country also plans to land the first probe ever on the
dark side of the moon in 2018, another milestone. The official China Daily newspaper said the country needed first to develop a powerful enough
rocket to lift a payload of at least 100 metric tons into low Earth orbit. It also needs more advanced technology, including new space suits, for a
lunar mission. Advancing China’s space program seems to be a priority for Beijing, with President Xi Jinping calling for the country to establish
itself as a space power. Apart from its civilian ambitions, Beijing has tested anti-satellite missiles, & the U.S. Congress has banned NASA from
engaging in cooperation with its Chinese counterpart due to security concerns. Additionally, China said this spring that it would launch a “core
module” for its first space station sometime around 2018, part of a plan to have a permanent manned space station in service around 2022.
by Wayne Shattuck
LOWDOWN ON ZIKA... Global health officials are racing to better understand the Zika virus behind a major outbreak that began in Brazil last
year & has spread to many countries in the Americas. Here are some questions & answers about the virus & current outbreak.
HOW DO PEOPLE BECOME INFECTED? - Zika is transmitted to people through the bite of infected female mosquitoes.
HOW DO YOU TREAT ZIKA? - There is no treatment or vaccine for Zika infection at this time. Companies &
scientists are racing to develop a safe & effective vaccine, but it could take 18 months or more to start large scale
clinical trials of potential preventative shots.
HOW DANGEROUS IS IT? - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) concluded that infection
with the Zika virus in pregnant women is a cause of the birth defect microcephaly & other severe brain abnormalities
in babies. Brazil has confirmed 1,200 cases of microcephaly, & consider most of them to be related to Zika infection
in the mothers. Also, Brazil has registered 91,500 likely cases of the Zika virus from February through mid April.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ZIKA INFECTION - People infected with Zika may have a mild fever, skin
rash, conjunctivitis, muscle & joint pain & fatigue that can last two to seven days. But as many as 80% of people
infected never develop symptoms.
HOW CAN ZIKA BE CONTAINED? - Efforts to control the spread of the virus focus on eliminating mosquito breeding sites & taking precautions against mosquito
bites such as using insect repellent & mosquito nets.
HOW WIDESPRED IS THE OUTBREAK? - Active Zika outbreaks have been reported in at least 43 countries or territories, most of them in the Americas. Florida
has seen the most cases of Zika virus in the United States, just over 90, since January, 2015, but all have been travel related.
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE ZIKA VIRUS? - The Zika virus is found in tropical locales with large mosquito populations. Outbreaks of Zika have been recorded
in Africa, the Americas, Southern Asia & the Western Pacific. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in rhesus monkeys & was first identified in people in 1952
in Uganda & Tanzania.
CAN ZIKA BE TRANSMITTED THROUGH SEXUAL CONTACT? - The World Health Organization says sexual transmission is “relatively common” & has
advised pregnant women not to travel to areas with ongoing outbreaks of Zika virus. The U.S. CDC is investigating about a dozen cases of possible sexual transmission.
All cases involve possible transmission of the virus from men to their sex partners. British health officials reported Zika was found in a man’s semen two months after
he was infected, suggesting the virus may linger in semen long after infection symptoms fade. Zika has also been associated with other neurological disorders, including
serious brain & spinal cord infections, but the long-term health consequences of Zika infection are not clear.
BUT THAT’S NOT ALL... In the Middle Ages, though castles offered great protection, they were cold & undesirable. If someone was sick, it was common for him or her
to be considered “touched by the Devil” & thus condemned to leave the castle.

One Person Can Make a Difference
By Kelly Rossi, Director, Eckerd Raising Hope
There are over 6000 children in our own community’s foster care system; and unfortunately, an average of 7 more enter
every day. With such an overwhelming number, I am often asked, “I’m just one person, how can I help?” As a parent, as
a community member, as a business owner,
as a person, you can help foster children feel
valued and empowered. You can make a
difference.
1. Be kind: Everyone has or is going through something in their lives. Perform a random act
of kindness, and do things to show others you care. Your actions will also be an example
for others around you, including your own children, to replicate.
2. Organize an event through Eckerd Raising Hope: This caring program allows children
in foster care to “shop for free” for basic need items such as clothing, shoes, toiletries &
school supplies. Grab your friends & co-workers and organize a drive, host a fundraiser,
and help provide these
3. Volunteer - Volunteering your time is a great way to support community non-profits, meet
new people and learn new skills. When you volunteer for a cause that you believe in, it can
be one of the most rewarding and beneficial experiences of your lifetime.
4. Become a Foster Parent: Abused & neglected children need loving homes and foster
parents who can meet their unique needs. Being a champion for a child in foster care
means, as a foster parent, you help bring stability to a child’s life during a time of trauma.
Foster parents leave lifelong impressions on children in their care and positively impact the
futures of children in our community.
5. Consider Adoption: Many of the children in our foster care system are available for
adoption and are waiting for their forever families. When you adopt, you are giving a child
a second chance to become part of a loving, permanent family
where they can feel loved, grow and thrive.
6. Be a Mentor: One of the greatest gifts you can give a child in
need is your time. You never know the impact your involvement
and caring can have on a child’s life, simply by investing your
time and energy. You can affect lifelong change.
It’s impossible.” said pride.
“It’s risky.” said experience.
“It’s pointless.” said reason.
“Give it a try.” whispered the heart.

Many New Faces on
the Bucs Roster
Kip Michalak
Sportswriter
4th Round: Ryan Smith, CB North Carolina Central
Smith has a knack for forcing turnovers and is the type of player Defensive Coordinator
Mike Smith is looking for. For now Smith appears to be a strong candidate for special
teams, averaging just over 28 yards on kick returns.
The 2016 NFL Draft has come and gone, but not before the
Tampa Bay Bucs were able to add a handful of key building
blocks for the future. From top to bottom the Bucs were
able to fill some holes on defense, as well as boosting their
overall depth. Let’s take a look at the newest editions to
Head Coach Dirk Koetter’s roster:
Kip Michalak
Sportswriter
[email protected]
follow me on twitter @
1st Round: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB Florida
After playing his high school days in Tampa at Wharton
High School, Hargreaves made a living patrolling the
Gators secondary. Now the former Gator has returned home
to provide a much need boost on defense.
2nd Round: Noah Spence, DE Eastern Kentucky
As long as he can keep his head on straight, Spence could turn into a steal for the
Bucs in the second round. Spence appears to have turned his life around after several
failed drug tests led to him being permanently banned from the Big Ten. Now it will
just be a question about whether he plays outside linebacker or defensive end at the
next level.
2nd Round: Roberto Aguayo, K Florida State
This pick has left many experts scratching their heads, but if Aguayo can kick with
the same accuracy that he displayed in college, he could be a fixture in Tampa Bay for
the next decade and beyond. His former college teammate and now Bucs teammate,
Jameis Winston has recently come to his defense, stating that fans will soon see why
he was selected so high in the draft.
5th Round: Caleb Benenoch, OT UCLA
The background story on Benenoch is incredible, with his mom accidently signing
him up for American football instead of soccer. Benenoch is currently penciled in as
the backup behind Ali Marpet at right guard, but a strong showing at training camp
could make him the swing tackle.
6th Round: Devante Bond, OLB Oklahoma
Bond was hampered by an injury for part of his senior season, but when healthy he
turned quite a few heads. Bond will need to prove that he can get to the quarterback
in training camp if he is going to land on the final 53-man roster.
6th Round: Dan Vitale, FB Northwestern
He may have been the Bucs final selection during this year’s draft, but don’t sleep
on Vitale. The versatile fullback from Northwestern lined up at just about every
position for the Wildcats on offense, and is quite the pass catching threat with over
100 receptions in his collegiate career. While Vitale can be used to open holes in the
running game, he could also see time at tight end this season.
Other than their 7 draft picks, the Bucs signed a number of undrafted free agents to
compete for a spot on either the 53-man roster, or the practice squad. Those players
include:
Leonard Wester, OT Missouri Western
Dominique Robertson, OL West Georgia
Elijah Shumate, Safety Notre Dame
Cassanova McKinzy, LB Auburn
Peyton Barber, RB Auburn
Channing Ward, DE Ole Miss
Taylor Fallin, OT Memphis
Kivon Cartwright, Colorado State
The Best of Times
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” is a famous introductory line from “Tale of Two
Cities” by Charles Dickens.
Throughout the almost 11 years that I cared for my dad with Alzheimer’s, I related well to the above
statement. One might ask, “How could this have been the best of times?” Well, I am so grateful for the
precious time that my father and I spent together. I truly cherish the memory of those days. The worst
of times? The answer is simple; watching his day to day struggles and then the gradual slipping away to
becoming a man that I could barely recognize.
There are so many positive things that can result from a caregiving journey. But sometimes we may have
to wait to the very end before we begin to realize them.
One thing I kept telling myself all the way through my caregiving campaign
was that out of all the things I’ve started and never finished before in my
life, this wouldn’t be one of them. This is one commitment that I swore I
would see through until the very end.
Whether you are new at this or are a seasoned veteran, you will soon discover
that you have a hundred times more endurance than originally thought
possible. When you find yourself smack dab in the middle of this journey,
it’s almost impossible to see anything positive about what you’re currently
experiencing. I know, you can’t believe how hard you’re being tested! Take
heart; stop and realize what a stronger individual you’re becoming. As time
progresses things will become a bit easier. Your inner strength will grow to
a higher level than you have ever dreamed it could be.
Caregiving is a life changing ordeal. You might also say it is a “heart
changing” experience. Once a caregiver, always a caregiver. You may
now find yourself with a loving compulsion which can only be satisfied by
assisting others who are now walking in your past footsteps. Support groups
are great places in which to use these new found gifts of compassion and
wisdom. Happily, for the sole purpose of helping others, there always seem
to be those who still attend these meetings even years after their loved ones
have passed.
There are parts of your life that you may lose,
never to be retrieved. But what replaces these voids will most likely be an
increasingly moral base, complete with sound convictions. Whether it’s new
friends or just a deeper belief in yourself and life in general, you can become
better for the experience.
Fellow caregivers, if you are in the thick of things and finding it hard to see
any light at the end of the tunnel, keep this one thought in mind: You are
single-handedly bringing a better quality of life to your loved one. That is
something that is extremely special. I hope that my reminding you of this
will help you to get through another day with confidence and renewed hope.

Accentuate with Accessories
More than anything else in your home, accessories give
each and every room a little bit of your personality!
Without them, you only have the setting for a model room
in a model home. Accessories make each room come alive
with pop and pizzazz! There’s nothing better to help reflect
your tastes and those of your family. Simply stated, a home
without accessories is like food without seasoning!
Acquiring accessories is truly a never-ending delight.
Whenever and wherever you see something that grabs your
eye or catches your attention, acquire it if possible, because
it will give you never ending pleasure every time you look
at it. Plus it adds a very personal touch to your home.
Here are a few ideas of how these precious treasures can
be incorporated into a decorative accessory plan for your
home.
• Smaller objects are most effective when arranged in
groups usually of odd numbered pieces – however
this rule can be broken if scale and proportion are met
• Books can be used to achieve varying degrees of
height as you place your accessories and they are
decorative in their own right
• Silk plants used in moderation or simple vases with a
single flower type make a bold statement in any room
• It’s not necessary for groupings to consist of similar
elements – in other words you can make a grouping
of 3 items of different types of things – example one
candlestick with a lower vase and a small grass plant
- usually you want items in a group to be of varying
heights
• Hanging small family pictures or artwork together
will achieve more presence and become a focal point
Above all, let your imagination soar as you place your
precious accessories. By adding this “spice” to your design
plan, you’ll be sure to add the decorative finishing touches
each room craves.
If you are struggling to accessorize your home or you just
don’t have time or the desire to do it, please give my office a
call and we will be happy to take on this project for you and
make your home spectacular.
Happy Decorating!!!

Stay Safe From The Storm
By Pinellas County Commission Chairman Charlie Justice
On a summer morning, the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay may look as calm as a lake. Long-time residents
know that friendly weather can rapidly turn violent this time of year as the entire state watches the ocean for tropical storms
and hurricanes. Our area has been fortunate enough to duck a direct hit for almost 100 years now, but it only takes one storm to
break that record. In a major hurricane, it’s estimated that about 60 percent of homes in Pinellas County would be flooded by
wind-driven storm surge being pushed ashore. That’s a scary thought, but the good news is that with the right preparations, all
of our residents can find a place to safely ride out the storm or evacuate in the event of a big storm.
The most important preparation you can make right now is to get educated about hurricanes. Pinellas County is divided into
five evacuation zones based on the expected damage from hurricane storm surge. Do you know your zone? Residents along
Pinellas County
Commission Chairman
the barrier islands, in coastal areas, at low elevations and those who live in mobile homes are mostly in Zone A, the first
communities to be evacuated in a storm. On the other end of the spectrum, residents who live on higher ground, in Zone E,
might only be ordered to evacuate during a catastrophic
Category 5 hurricane where storm surge could rise up to
29 feet.
Charlie Justice
“Patients’ Choice”
Women’s Health Care
There are several ways to find your evacuation zone. You
can download Pinellas County’s Doing Things for You
app and look for the Know Your Zone feature. You can
call (727) 453-3150 and enter your 10-digit home phone
number. Your evacuation zone also appears on your Pinellas
County water bill or your Truth in Millage (TRIM) notice.
Lastly, you can visit www.pinellascounty.org/emergency
and click on the Know Your Zone icon. On that website,
you can also find the county’s Storm Surge Protector App.
To get a visual idea of how high storm surge could go at
your property, plug in your street address and the app will
show a 3-D image of your home as the water rises.
Now is also a good time to consider what you would have
to do to stay safely in your home in the event of a hurricane
– if you’re not in an evacuation zone – or where you would
go if were ordered to evacuate. Would you drive your
family out of the area? Would you check in to a hotel that’s
in a safe part of the county? Many local organizations
run host home programs where groups that live in nonevacuation zones open their facilities to families who need
a place to shelter. Your last resort would be a public shelter
at a local school or church building around the county. The
county also offers three public shelters for people with
special medical needs or people who need to shelter with
their pets (cats and dogs only). Space is limited at these
shelters, so you should consider registering ahead. For
more information, you can call Emergency Management
at (727) 464-3800.

In The Flow
By Mary Quintero, LMT, CST
Mother’s Day has come and gone. Father’s Day is upon us. What incredible gifts our
parents give us. They give us life and help shape us into the people we become. As we
get older, we find ourselves, probably more than we would like to admit, following the
example our parents set for us. And when we become parents, our children they will
probably do the same. It’s how we learn. Which brings me to what seems to be the
uncomfortable topic of self-care.
Mary Quintero LMT, CST
In my practice, I have the distinct privilege of treating many children and their families, and I love it! We work together on many different challenges
together from autism and ADD/ADHD to sports injuries. Even with the variety of reasons these families come to see me for, I am noticing a common theme.
Huge amounts of time and attention are given to the care of these children and for good reason. However, in the process of running from appointment to
appointment and making sure the child has every available resource, it seems that the caregivers are forgetting to care for themselves too.
CranioWorks
Just the other day, I offered a quick 10-minute treatment to a parent that looked like they really needed it. They had a horrible headache and just looked
exhausted. The parent quickly declined saying the appointment was for their child. My golly! Only 10 minutes out of an entire hour?
727-469-3211
www.cranioworksflorida.com
If we really sit and think about it, taking care of ourselves IS taking care of our children. Not only are
we keeping ourselves physically and emotionally healthy, we are teaching them how to take care of
themselves in the way they learn best – by example. Another amazing gift!
I challenge you to make time for yourself this summer to do what you need to rejuvenate and replenish.
You just may be surprised how much your life, and the lives of those around you, change for the better
when you do.

“Place the oxygen mask over your face before assisting others with theirs” . . . . The instructions doled out by flight attendants has gotten me thinking. We
don’t question the logic of putting the mask on ourselves in the event
of an air emergency. In fact, it makes sense, if we can’t breathe, how can we help someone else? So, then
why do we have such a hard time “putting the mask” on ourselves first when it comes to everyday life?

mid-August to late October. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season begins May 15 and ends November 30.
Protecting you, your family and your property is important to us and we want you to be prepared if a hurricane comes your way. The following information and much more
can be reviewed in detail on FEMA’s site. But we’ve included their fifteen-point protection plan below.
To prepare for a hurricane, you should take the following measures:
Build an emergency kit that will meet your family & pet needs for at least 72 hours
Make a family communications plan that includes where you are going to meet if you can’t go home
Know your surroundings:
Learn the elevation level of your property and whether the land is flood-prone. This will help you know
how your property will be affected when storm surge or tidal flooding are forecast.
Identify levees and dams in your area and determine whether they pose a hazard to you.
Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground.
Determine where you would go and how you would get there if you needed to
evacuate.
Make plans to secure your property:
Cover all of your home’s windows. Permanent storm shutters offer the best
protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8”
marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows
from breaking.
Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame
structure. This will reduce roof damage.
Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed so they are more
wind resistant.
Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage it can cause dangerous and
expensive structural damage.
Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything
else that is not tied down.
If you own a boat, determine how and where to secure it.
If feasible, install a generator for emergencies.
If you are in a high-rise building, be prepared to take shelter on or below the
10th floor.
Hurricanes cause heavy rains that can create extensive flood damage in coastal
and inland areas. Everyone is at risk and should consider flood insurance
protection.
Flood insurance is the only way to financially protect your property or business
from flood damage. If you haven’t already done so, you can learn more about
your flooding risk and how to protect yourself and your business, by calling our
office at 727.213.1890.

An Integrated, Disciplined Approach
To Financial Planning
In 1962, St. Petersburg broker Bob James set out to build a financial services firm that operates with a refreshingly
unique concept: people, planning and principles should always come first. Today, over a half-century later,
Bob’s “different kind of firm” – Raymond James & Associates, Inc. (member New York Stock Exchange/SIPC)
– is one of the leading independent financial services and wealth management companies in the country. The
well-respected, widely recognized multinational firm has distinct business units that serve a variety of clients,
from individuals and small business owners to municipalities and major corporations.
Belleair Private Wealth Management Group selected Raymond James not only for its sterling reputation and
breadth of resources, but, especially, for its culture of putting clients’ interests first – an approach that mirrors
the group’s own philosophy. The Largo-based practice specializes in multi-generational planning, customized
portfolio design and executive compensation strategies, restoring balance and financial strength through life’s
many transactions.

senior registered sales associate; Gene Melamud, MBA, CFP®,
CRPS®, senior vice president, investments; Barry Alpert, senior vice
president, investments; and Christine Hagerson, service associate.
“Each generation thinks about building and succession of values and
wealth,” explained Gene Melamud, Belleair’s senior vice president,
investments. “We work from the basis of supporting and preserving your
values, before passing your values regarding wealth to future generations.”
Gene grew up in the United States after moving from his native Ukraine in
1979. He earned an MBA from the University of South Florida and became
a CPA in Maryland in 1992. He started Belleair Private Wealth Management
from scratch in 1995, and became a certified financial planner (CFP®) in
2000. He received his chartered retirement plans specialist designation
(CRPS®) in 2013.
Barry Alpert – senior vice president, investments – joined Raymond James
in 1997 as managing director in investment banking. A Pinellas County
resident for over 45 years, Barry has extensive experience in the investment
banking and insurance industries, having served as a chairman, director,
president and chief executive officer of numerous financial services
companies.
With robust service experience backed by Raymond James’ award-winning
equity research, strong asset management performance and long-term
corporate stability, Barry and Gene provide a performance-driven portfolio
uniquely tailored to your needs, values, goals and risk tolerance. When you
call their group’s local office, you will speak with a human being who’s
ready to assist you – not some labyrinthine automated system or algorithmdriven robo- advisor. “We’re more than experienced financial advisors;
we’re your neighbors,” said Barry.

TampaRep Tackles Challenging O’Neill
Masterwork The Iceman Cometh
TAMPA — Tampa Repertory Theatre will produce Eugene O’Neill’s
landmark American drama The Iceman Cometh at Studio 120 on the
University of South Florida campus from June 16 to July 3. Performances
are at 7:00 PM on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 3:00 PM on Sundays. Studio 120 is located at 3837 USF Holly Drive, Tampa 33620, where ample free parking is
available during performances. Patrons may purchase tickets at the door or from a link on TampaRep’s website at www.tamparep.org/iceman
“In the Pantheon of great American dramas, it’s the play everyone has heard of but few have seen,” remarks director C. David Frankel, also TampaRep’s artistic director. “In
the 70 years since it first hit Broadway, Iceman has been rarely produced outside of New York City and Chicago. Everyone acknowledges that it’s a devastatingly powerful
work, but few attempt it, because it is notoriously difficult to stage and perform.”
So challenging is The Iceman Cometh that the producers of the most recent Broadway-bound revival got cold feet
and canceled the Broadway run in favor of a short stint in Brooklyn, despite the fact that the production had set
attendance records in its Chicago tryout and starred certified box office draws Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy.
“After five seasons,” Frankel says, “we’re up to the mammoth challenge of Iceman.”
Set in a tavern and flophouse in New York City’s then-grubby Greenwich Village in 1912, The Iceman Cometh
studies a collection of broken, lost men and women, and the salesman who arrives with a perverse pitch to save
each of them from themselves. It’s a story of hope and regret, of how the lies people tell themselves both sustain
and destroy them.
Said one critic of the latest revival: “Iceman flies by like a rollercoaster ride of thrilling comedic highs and
stomach-churning lows.”
The large TampaRep cast features some of Tampa’s finest actors, including Ned Averill-Snell (TampaRep’s Betrayal, Jobsite Theater’s Lebensraum), Michael Mahoney
(Proof at Gypsy Stage Repertory), Jack Holloway (TampaRep’s Hamlet and True West), Erin Foster (the recent TampaRep/Stageworks coproduction of Inherit the Wind),
Jordan Foote (American Stage’s One Slight Hitch), Josh Goff (American Stage’s Jitney), young Nick Hoop (Jobsite’s Silence: The Musical) in the lynchpin role of Don
Parritt, and many more.
Following TampaRep’s popular and critically acclaimed productions of The Children’s Hour, True West and Silent Sky, The Iceman Cometh concludes a successful fifth
season for TampaRep, advancing the company from newcomer to one of the area’s most well-established, solid producers of rewarding stage experiences.

June is the month we really start to see changes in the landscape. Some of these changes are pronounced as many of our plants begin
their flowering or fruiting seasons. Unfortunately, with all good things, there has to be a little bad. Fertilizer restrictions begin; watering
our plants and lawns becomes problematic. Chinch bugs start devastating our turf grasses. Caterpillars munch on our vegetables and
flowering plants, and whitefly populations explode. Managing these problems in a timely manner is the key to maintaining a healthy
landscape. In this article, I will go over several simple solutions that can help you keep your garden and landscape thriving.
Beginning June 1st through September 30th, our fertilizer blackout period commences. During this time, retailers and garden centers
are not allowed to sell fertilizers for lawns or landscape plants. You will still be able to purchase fertilizers for your vegetable gardens
and fruit trees, but these products will have to be labeled exclusively for them. Homeowners will also be restricted from the application
of these products during the same time frame, even if you purchased the products prior to the blackout. The reason behind the blackout
period is to prevent the leaching of nitrogen into
our waterways. While I agree, this is a noble cause;
the harm to our landscapes created by the lack
of nutrients applied during the growing season is
unavoidable.
Plants need their nutrition just as you need to eat
to stay healthy. Unless you have made two applications of granular fertilizer since the
beginning of the year, and plan on making two more after September 30th, then your
lawn and plants will not receive the recommended amount of nutrition they require.
During this blackout period, you may apply products like Ironite, Chelated Iron, Minor
Essential Elements, and Potassium Nitrate. Although these products are components of
fertilizers, they are not covered by the ban and can still be applied. Applications of these
products will cover the minor nutritional needs of your plants, but you will still have to
worry about keeping your plants hydrated.
Proper watering during the summer months can be just as challenging as feeding your landscape. Once our temperatures reach ninety degrees, our turf grass and plants dry
out very quickly. As our plants reach the wilting point, damage begins. Even with a sprinkler system running at peak performance, you can only water two days a week. I have
seen lawns and plants watered in the morning, start to wilt by afternoon. One way to stop this drying out of the landscape is to consider using a product called, Hydretain.
Hydretain is a liquid product that comes packaged to use with your garden hose. Just hook it up and spray the material over your lawn and ornamental plant beds. This should
only take about five minutes, then water in with a quarter-inch of water. Save the empty Hydretain bottle to use later when applying other lawn products or fertilizers.
Once the Hydretain is watered into the root zone, it attaches to the roots and pulls water vapor out of the air, directing this additional water to your plants. Some pest-control
companies offer Hydretain as an add-on service to their client’s regular pest-control applications to help keep their landscapes from drying out. Hydretain should be reapplied every three months. Keeping your lawn and plants properly
watered is very important, especially when pest pressures present
themselves. Most landscapes can withstand a lack of water, but
when pests like chinch bugs and sod web worms attack at the same
time, damage can occur very quickly.
Chinch bugs start attacking lawns in early June and continue
throughout the summer months. St. Augustine lawns are their
primary source of food. The chinch bug feeds on the grass sheaths
by piercing and sucking the plant juices causing the grass to yellow
out and then die. Central Florida will see seven to ten generations of
chinch bugs each year giving you very little time to apply the proper
controls. I strongly suggest you hire a pest-control company to
apply these products for you. Professional companies know which
products work to gain control of these pests. Homeowners usually
only apply products after damage has occurred and then continue to
use the same products each time they spray. This leads to the risk of
resistance to that material by the chinch bugs in the next generation.
You must alternate controls to eliminate these destructive pests.
If you are planning to treat your lawn yourself, then you can use
the following product rotation to control these pests. In early June,
treat your lawn with either Bifenthrin or Liquid Sevin. Make sure
you have read the entire label before making any application. In
mid to late July, you will need to purchase a product containing
Arena. Look for Arena 0.25 in thirty-pound bags. You will be able
to apply this product with a fertilizer spreader, then water with
at least a quarter-inch of water to move the material into the root
zone. Repeat these applications every six weeks to maintain control
of chinch bugs. If you follow my directions, then you will get a
head start on controlling these pests before they get the chance to
destroy your lawn. Both of the products I listed above will also
rid your lawn of army and sod web worms. For caterpillars in the
garden, apply Dipel or Thuricide every two weeks. Whiteflies on
ornamental plants or in the garden are a different problem we have
to discuss.

Preventing Heat Stroke in your Pet
Here in Florida Heat Awareness is very important year-round. Every year countless numbers of pets,
mostly dogs, lose their lives to heat stroke (hyperthermia). Fortunately most cases of heat stroke are
preventable!
What is heat stroke? Heat stroke occurs when the internal body temperature of your pet rises to
approximately 105°F or greater. The elevated temperature causes the body to go haywire, affecting
almost all body systems. Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.
Leaving a companion animal in a car (even with the windows cracked open) for “just a minute” is one
of the most common causes of heat stroke in pets. It takes as little as 5 minutes in a non-air-conditioned
car to cause a heatstroke in your pet.
A car acts as a greenhouse, trapping the sun’s heat even in shaded areas. Studies performed in a shaded area have demonstrated: at 9 am with an outside temperature of 87°F,
the temperature inside a car with 2-windows cracked open was 105°F; and with 4-windows cracked open, 104°F. Contrary to belief, keeping the car windows cracked open
hardly decreases the temperature at all.
Some other common causes of hyperthermia include:
• Keeping an animal outdoors in hot/humid conditions without adequate shade and water
• Exercise in hot/humid weather, during the hottest hours of the day
• Lack of heat acclimation in pets who live in an air-conditioned environments
• Animals that are predisposed to heat stroke are:
o Cats with kidney disease, cancer, diabetes,
hyperthyroidism
o Pediatric, nursing and geriatric animals
o Arthritic animals with difficulty rising to
move to the shade
o Brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bull dogs,
Persian cats) with difficulty panting
o Pets with heart disease, lung disease,
laryngeal paralysis
o Genetics (Labrador retrievers)
Signs of heat stroke in your pet include: excessive panting
and drooling, difficulty breathing, increased heart and
respiratory rate, purple to brick red mucous membranes,
vomiting, bloody diarrhea, muscle tremors, incoordination,
seizures, collapse, loss of consciousness, and DEATH.
What should you do if your pet is showing signs of heat
stroke? Hyperthermia is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY. Seek the
medical attention of your veterinarian.
If your pet is having seizures or is unconscious
IMMEDIATE veterinary care is critical to saving the life of
your pet. Depending on severity, not all pets can be saved.
If your pet is overheated, but conscious, cool your pet
as quickly as possible. Move your pet to a cool, shaded
location. Use tepid water and wet towels to cool your pet’s
body. Fans can help speed evaporative cooling. DO NOT
use cold water or ice to cool your pet. Ice and cold water
cause blood vessels of the skin to constrict, slowing the
release of internal heat.
Offer your pet cool water. Wet your pet’s tongue, but don’t
force water into your pet’s mouth. Allow your pet to drink
naturally if he or she is able to.
DO NOT overcool your pet. If possible monitor your
pet’s temperature. The goal is to reduce your pet’s body
temperature to the102.5-103°F range.
After stabilizing your pet, seek veterinary medical care.
How can you prevent heat stroke?
• Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water,
especially when it’s hot outdoors
• For cats: place multiple bowls of water around the
house for easy access
• When traveling, ensure your pet has regular access
to water
• Provide plenty of shade for outdoor pets
• Exercise animals early or late in the day; avoid
prolonged exercise
• Never leave animals unattended in a parked vehicle
even with windows open
• Trim longer hair, but never shave your dog; the
hair coat prevents overheating and sunburn

Whiteflies look like tiny white moths and are found on many ornamental plants and in
vegetable gardens. These little pests seem to be attracted to succulent new growth, and
once they have found a good food source; they do not want to leave. You may notice
them as you brush up alongside one of your plants and fifty or more of these insects
will be seen fluttering around. Whiteflies damage your plants by sucking plant juices
causing your plants to wither and die. There are several varieties of whiteflies you
need to be aware of. The most damaging variety we have seen, lives along the coast
and is called the Spiraling Whitefly.
Spiraling Whiteflies can do severe damage to trees and shrubs. The first signs of an
infestation are the sticky substances they excrete as they feed on your plants. In some
instances, sidewalks, patio furniture, and plants low to the ground are covered with a
thick black coating of this material. The only control I recommend for these pests is
a product called Safari. Safari is a true systemic insecticide and is applied as a foliar
spray, a soil drench, or by trunk injection. Unfortunately, this product is expensive,
and I recommend you seek out professional services to treat your plants or trees.
However, if you want to do this application yourself, then I will tell you the trade
names of the products you need to purchase. Bobbie Kahler

For non-fruiting trees and shrubs
you will need to purchase Core tech,
Safari, Bayer Advance Twelve Month
Tree or Shrub Care, or Meridian. Read
the labels and apply the recommended
amount as determined by the height of
the plant you are treating. Safari and
Core Tech require only one application
per year, but you should still monitor
your plants for signs of re-infestation.
Meridian should be used bi-monthly,
and the Bayer product is effective for
about six months. The key is to get
these products into the plants before
they are infested. I like to give these
products at least thirty days to work
after my first application. Do not use
these products on fruit-bearing trees
or vegetables. For fruiting trees and
vegetables use a product called Sevin.
Severely infested vegetable plants
should be pulled from the garden.

I know there is a lot going on, but if
you follow my directions, you will
stay ahead of the pests. Monitor your
plants regularly for pests and take
appropriate action when insects are
spotted. Thank you for your support
and until next time, remember without
plants, we would not be here!

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15, 2016
Neighborly Care Network works to prevent elder abuse - By Sandra Narron
There are many types of elder abuse – physical, financial, and self-abuse or neglect. The National
Center for Elder Abuse defines self-neglect and self-abuse as follows: “characterized as the failure
Neighborly Care Network
of a person to perform essential, self-care tasks and that such failure threatens his/her own health
13945 Evergreen Avenue, Clearwater, FL 33762
or safety.” In an effort to prevent this problem, Neighborly Care Network has been helping our

frail elderly population for the past 50 years through vital life-sustaining services. During their 50www.neighborly.org
year history, Neighborly has encountered many behaviors of self-neglect, the most prevalent being
inadequate food or water intake. However, poor personal hygiene and failure to take necessary
medications properly, or at all, are also behaviors exhibited by many of our
homebound elderly. A great number of seniors may not be taking the medications
they need because they cannot afford them. Seniors often cut medications in half,
or take them every other day, in order to make the prescription last longer.
Neighborly routinely sees symptoms of self-abuse or self-neglect, which has
become a major problem in our communities. Symptoms may show up as
malnutrition, dehydration, untreated or inadequately treated medical conditions,
and unsafe living conditions. The Public Policy Institute of AARP has estimated
that 40 to 50 percent of the reports made to state protective services about elder
abuse involve self-neglect on the part of the elderly person.
As a leader in providing superior health, home and community-based services,
Neighborly offers a positive approach to self-directed care. With five decades of
experience in working with seniors and their families, Neighborly understands
that independence is paramount. They have been helping our frail elderly remain
independent through a host of services, such as:
Adult Day Services - Care for loved ones is provided by a team of professionals
and skilled staff who have experience working with the elderly and adults with
disabilities. In conjunction with the participant’s physician, medical management
and individualized care planning is provided by a nursing staff along with daily
therapeutic activities, nutritious meals, and referrals for additional required
services. Adult Day Services provides the perfect solution for working caregivers
or much needed respite. Transportation is provided.

Meals on Wheels – Each day around lunchtime, Neighborly Care Network Meals
on Wheels volunteers deliver much more than hot, nutritious food. For homebound
people, these visits mean contact with the outside world, a check to see if they
are healthy and clean, and the chance to remain at home. Neighborly’s goal is
to provide community services, which will allow seniors to remain independent
longer.
Senior Dining – Senior citizens are invited to join their neighbors at one of seven
different Senior Dining sites throughout Pinellas County. Participants in the Senior
Dining program receive nutritious meals, nutrition education, and
socialization while enjoying a variety of daily activities, such as
bingo, sing-alongs, cards, games, and exercise.
Transportation Service – Specialized transportation for the
elderly and disabled to help them maintain their independence.
Whether it’s to the grocery store, the doctor’s office, an Adult Day
Center, or a Senior Dining Site, Neighborly offers transportation
service in Pinellas County for individuals 65 and older, or disabled
individuals 55 and older.
Pharmacy – Neighborly has an in house pharmacy that is a non
profit affordable alternative for people who do not have insurance
to cover their costs for prescriptions. Neighborly’s Pharmacist
is dedicated to helping people make informed choices for their
prescription needs.
Neighborly also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. For
