A letter from the Executive Director
In a recent issue, Fortune magazine recognized The World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.One of the honorees was General Joe Dunford, current leader of the
NATO coalition in Afghanistan. It seems the General was nominated by, among others, retired General George W. Casey, former Chief of Staff of the
U. S. Army. A bit unusual for an army guy to recognize a marine.
In the interview for the magazine piece, Gen. Dunford was asked about the experiences that led to his success as a leader. He replied that his first battalion commander told him the three rules of success. The first? Surround yourself with good people. “Over the years,” says Dunford, “I’ve forgotten
the other two.”
That is the way I feel about the extraordinary group of members, members of our board and advisory council,
staff and volunteers who have responded to the mission and vision of the St. Simons Land Trust. There is a palpable feeling of excitement when our vision for the Island is described. In a capsule it is “a network of parks and
natural areas, connected by a trail system.” Some holdings for active and passive recreation, some for protection
of rare habitat and others to preserve the marvelous tree canopy that makes our roads such pleasant avenues.
All of these special areas are to be connected by a trail system that will allow access without the necessity of a
vehicle.
The vision is powerful and will take talented and dedicated individuals who are excited and in fact compelled
to help see us through to success. National standards call for 15 – 20 % of a community be dedicated to open
space, and we feel this is a reasonable goal for an island of 10,624 acres. With dedication we can someday reach
this pinnacle.

2012 and 2013 were extraordinary years for St. Simons Island. The Land Trust’s ability to achieve mission and vision reflects
leadership and hard work by many people and the tremendous support of our membership. Building on the project successes of
the 2005 Chevron Station, the 2009 Frederica Park and Alice Richards Botanical Trail, the 2010 preservation of the Old Stables
Corner, and the 2012 purchase of Cannon’s Point, the Land Trust continues to grow and maintain a strong financial position.
This financial strength makes possible the preservation of additional property, the development of the platform at Cannon’s Point
for education and recreation, and the creation of a network of parks and natural areas connected by a trail system.
We have provided audited financials for 2011 and 2012 and unaudited for 2013. Showing this 3-year statement of activities
allows us to demonstrate the incredible results of your support: 776 acres protected in perpetuity, valued at over $38 million. The
following paragraph provides an explanation of the financials presented here, and the audited financial statements are available for
review by any member, at the Land Trust office upon request and appointment.
Restricted gifts from fundraising for Cannon’s Point in 2011 resulted in significant revenues in excess of costs and related
cash of approximately $1.4 million which was carried forward to 2012 for the Cannon’s Point acquisition. The significant increase
in Land Acquisition costs in 2012 was the purchase of Cannon’s Point. Because the purchase transaction was completed in 2012,
costs were in excess of net revenues but those funds were actually raised and accounted for in 2011. Excluding Cannon’s Point
fundraising and transaction in 2011 and 2012 the net revenue in excess of costs would have been $158,885 and
$207,987 respectively.

Cannon’s Point
In September 2012, the Land Trust acquired Cannon’s Point Preserve – a 608-acre tract of land on the north end of St. Simons
Island featuring mature maritime forest, six miles of marsh shore line including deep water frontage, and many other beautiful
examples of coastal Georgia ecology. The property will forever be a primitive wildlife experience for visitors of all ages to explore
and enjoy. In 2013, the Land Trust conducted some initial pilot programs in partnership with local agencies including Glynn
County Schools, the College of Coastal Georgia, Coastal Wildscapes and the Coastal Georgia Historical Society to explore the
potential for educational progams and passive recreation. The property opened to the general public in 2014.
Our Army of Volunteers
More than 200 people of all ages have volunteered with the Land Trust in the past two years. Projects have included
cleaning up the Alice Richards Botanical Trail at Frederica Park and the Chevron Station property at Demere Road,
working oyster tables at the annual Oyster Roast, and clearing trails at Cannon’s Point Preserve. These dedicated
people have given thousands of hours of volunteer time in 2012 and 2013.
