Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Peter Bradley Adams Mountain Stage® from NPR is a production of West Virginia Public Broadcasting February 2011 On The Radio Stage Notes Sam Bush February 4, 2011 Lucero - Playing hundreds of dates for several years, Lucero has gone from earnest indie rockers to a major label act. Its major label debut, “1372 Overton Park” finds the band incorporating more of a Memphis soul sound backed by a horn section. Formed by Ben Nichols in the late ‘90s, Lucero issued its first CD in 2001. The 2003 release “That Much Further West” earned the group a spot on Rolling Stone’s “Hot List.” In 2005, “Nobody’s Darlings” was produced by Jim Dickinson while director Aaron Goldman mixed archival footage with footage shot during the recording of the album, for his documentary on Lucero titled “Dreaming in America.” Sam Bush - Grammy winning, multi-instrumentalist Sam Bush is one of the architects of the newgrass movement and has emerged as the patriarch of jazzgrass mandolinists. Bush was instrumental in expanding the horizons of bluegrass music, fusing it with jazz, rock, blues, funk and other styles. He cofounded the genre-bending New Grass Revival and is an in-demand musician who has played with everyone from Emmylou Harris and Bela Fleck to Charlie Haden, Lyle Lovett and Garth Brooks. Bottle Rockets - The Bottle Rockets’ history dates back to the mid-‘80s and the beginning of the alt-country movement. Recording for a succession of indie labels since 1998, the group still relies on the same combination of rough and earthy roots sound with lyrics that explore a committed (and cynical) social consciousness. Sons of Bill - As the name implies, the five-piece group is led by the three sons -- James, Sam and Abe -- of Bill Wilson, an associate professor of philosophical theology at the University of Virginia and, more importantly, the inspiration behind his sons’ love of music. Bud Carroll & The Southern Souls - Huntington, WV, native Bud Carroll began playing guitar at age 8 and was playing in clubs three nights a week by the time he was 13. For the latest information about these artists, visit their websites by clicking on their names. On The Radio The Southern Souls includes bassist Jimmy Lykens, drummer Steve Barker and multi-instrumentalist Jon Cavendish. The group’s full-length debut, “Wasted Words & Best Intentions” was recorded in Athens, OH, with producer Eddie Ashworth (Sublime). The prolific songwriter has released 21 CDs as well as eight discs in her “Official Bootleg Series.” Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue -- At 23, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews has already achieved more acclaim than most players twice his age. Growing up in New Orleans’ Treme neighborhood, Trombone Shorty was a bandleader by the age of six. In 2009, New Orleans music magazine “Offbeat” named Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue “Best R&B/Funk Band” for the second year in a row, and he has twice been named “Performer of The Year.” Chuck Prophet -- Prophet first made his mark as the young guitarist in L.A.’s Green on Red, a forerunner of the Paisley Underground movement. After GoR disbanded in 1992, Prophet released a string of solo CDs filled with catchy pop songs that earned him a strong following overseas. Throughout his solo career, he has worked with legends and inspirations from Warren Zevon and Lucinda Williams to Bob Neuwirth, Billy Swan and beat poet Hubert Huncke. Erin McKeown -- Raised in Fredricksburg, VA, singer/songwriter Erin McKewon began pursuing music while attending Brown University, issuing two albums before earning a degree in ethnomusicology. To raise funds for the making of her “Hundreds of Lions,” McKeown produced a four-part series of internet house concerts. On The Radio Stage Notes February 18, 2011 Patty Loveless – Loveless, a Pikeville, KY, native, has been called a “new traditionalist” whose music draws from country’s honky-tonk tradition. While still in high school, she auditioned for Porter Wagoner who quickly asked her to perform with him and Dolly Parton. To date, the singer has issued eight Gold Record albums, four of which have gone on to Platinum status. Loudon Wainwright III – For his release, “High Wide & Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project,” Wainwright chronicles the life and times of country music pioneer Charlie Poole through originals and Poole standards. The album won a Grammy for “Traditional Folk Album.” Well known as the author of the Top 20 hit “Dead Skunk,” Loudon Wainwright III is a songwriter blessed with uncommon wit and insight. He has also appeared on TV (“M*A*S*H”), film (“Jacknife”) and stage (“Pump Boys and Dinettes”). Wainwright played a Southern mayor in Tim Burton’s “Big Fish”; appeared (along with celebrity offspring Rufus and Martha Wainwright) in Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator”; and most recently he has been seen in Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up.” Grascals - The Grascals have earned a place as one of the country’s top contemporary bluegrass groups, winning numerous bluegrass music awards including “Entertainers of the Year,” “Instrumental Group of the Hour 1 Year,” “Bluegrass Band of the Year,” Leslie Stevens & The Badgers -- Los and “Mandolin Player of the Year.” Angeles; Old Timers; My Tears Are On Today’s Program Pieta Brown - Pieta Brown is an itinerant artist whose music has been shaped by her parents and her upbringing.
