SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO DO IN BARCELONA AFTER THE MEETING
This guide is not a “Complete guide” as the ones you may buy but just some suggestions given by
members of the current and former Local Organising Committees (from the 3rd ESTRO Forum but
also from previous ESTRO meetings taking place in Barcelona) living in in the city.
The cultural activities have been updated for the 3rd ESTRO Forum week. Please remember that
we don’t usually have dinner before 9 p.m. After dinner locals meet for drinks around 11pm and
we go dancing around 1 am.

1. A few comments on the city centre
2
The center of Barcelona is made up by two different districts: Ciutat Vella (Raval, Gothic & Born)
and Eixample. The Ciutat Vella district is the old city district: mainly narrow and silence pedestrian
streets. It has some of the best sites of Barcelona, but unfortunately, some of its areas are the
poorest of the city.
The Gothic quarter of Ciutat Vella is the oldest part of the district and the whole city. You can find
buildings from 14th to 16th centuries, including the catalan government, the town hall,
Barcelona's cathedral and several other churches. It has became a very important tourist area, not
only for its narrow streets and enchanting little squares, but also for the many and original shops,
bars and restaurants.
The Eixample, in the other hand, is a rather new area. It was build during 19th and the beginning
of 20th century, in a rational 'square' basis like Manhattan. It is plenty of modernist buildings, and
is the main shopping district of the city. In opposition to its neighbor Ciutat Vella, the Eixample is
one of the most expensive districts. Passeig de Gracia and all its surroundings in the Eixample
district are plenty of Gaudi and other modernist buildings, along with the most important and
elegant shopping area of the city.
Plaza Catalunya is just the heart of Barcelona. Is the nexus point between the organized streets of
Eixample and the old and charming Ciutat Vella district. It is also an important hub of the train and
underground system and is a good start for sightseeing.
3
You can have fantastic views of the city from the port, the Park Güell or from Montjuïc.

2. Comments on coffee, beer and mixed drinks in Barcelona
Coffee
The Spanish drink coffee from first thing in the morning until the last thing at night. When ordered
in a bar or restaurant, coffees are always excellent quality and usually very strong. If you can’t
handle the caffeine you can ask for either “descafeinado de máquina” (decaffeinated ground
coffee) or “descafeinado de sobre” ( a sachet of decaffeinated instant coffee). Coffees come in
various shapes, sizes and flavours. Here is our quick guide:
Café solo - Equivalent to an espresso. Small, black and very strong
Cortado – equivalent to a noisette in France or macchiato in Italy, an espresso
with a dash of milk
Café con leche – A large white coffee
Capuccino – A white coffee with extra foam and sprinkling cocoa powder
Americano – A large black coffee, either a filter coffee or an espresso served
with a jug of hot water. Dilute to taste.
4
Bombón – Sweet and rich, an espresso with a dollop of condensed milk
Carajillo – Espresso coffee with a shot of brandy.
Café con hielo – Café solo with ice (put sugar in before putting coffee with ice)
Mixed drinks
Mixed drinks in Barcelona are very strong. If you order a vodka and tonic, whisky and coke or
similar, be aware that you will get more of the spirit than the mixer. Remember that drink driving
regulations are very strict!
Try some of the cocktails on offer, such as Mojito (a mixture of rum, fresh mint, lime, sugar and
carbonated water with ice), very refreshing! Or Caipirinha Brazils national cocktail which consists
of cachaça rum sugar and fresh lime, these can be seriously thirst quenching on our warm summer
evenings.
Beer
Measurements are metric in Spain and beers come in different sizes:
Caña – a small draught beer (25 cl) – rough half a pint
Mediana – a 33 cl bottle of beer
Jarra o Pinta – half a litre of draught beer – roughly a pint.

3. Cheap restaurants (about 20€)
Barcelona offers a huge amount of bars and restaurants, but eating in Barcelona is not very cheap.
Following the link http://www.bcnrestaurantes.com/eng/ you will find by yourself a complete
guide in English of all restaurants where you could do your own search by district, price, type of
food and more criteria.
Most of the restaurants will cost you about 30 €. Below you will find our recommendations on
restaurants considering a price of about 20 €/person and being in the city centre. They are
arranged by districts.
