Dollar Doubts Loom Over Laemmle
By Lee Barnathan
The vacant lot bounded by Lyons Avenue, Main and 9th streets and Railroad Avenue
still stands, though its days are numbered. Sooner, rather than later, there will be a
new Laemmle Theatres multiplex, a mixed-use retail/resident complex and a parking
structure.
With any new commercial venture, there is talk about how this new project will add
to a city’s coffers. It’s a feel-good moment when a city council, as Santa Clarita’s did
Tuesday night, votes to approve and front the seed money (in this case, $3,420,525
from the facilities replacement fund, to help Laemmle).
Naturally, a city expects a tidy return on its investment, so these questions remain:
How much revenue will Santa Clarita gain as a result, and how long will it take to
recoup?
City leaders have done their due diligence in trying to answer that question. They
funded studies by Applied Economics of Phoenix and Kosmont from Manhattan
Beach that concluded the city stands to gain $190,021 in the first year. City Economic
Development Manager Jason Crawford said during the city council meeting that there
are estimates that point to increased revenue in future years.
However, the true amount cannot be determined yet for two reasons: Firstly, it’s not
known how many people will actually come to Old Town Newhall. The reports
estimate 200,000 people will visit annually and spend an average of $15 each, above

Laemmle Theatre Deal
and beyond the admission tickets and popcorn, from which the city is ineligible
to receive monies. Councilmember TimBen Boydston on Monday questioned
if any of these 200,000 people would have gone to the other local theatres in
the area. If so, “that is not new tax dollars. That’s robbing Canyon Country
and Valencia to pay Newhall,” he said.
Secondly, the council did not vote to allocate any money
for the mixed-use or parking portions of the project,
although Crawford estimated the parking structure
would cost $15.2 million, making the project’s
total price tag – and amount the city puts out –
unknown.
Even those who spoke in opposition only objected to the subsidy and the
potential price of the parking structure – not to having Laemmle there. But this
raises a point: Why give Laemmle any money? On a relevant, yet much larger
scale, a reason the National Football League hasn’t had a team in Los Angeles
since 1994 is because no one would give a billionaire owner public
money. Now that owner Stan Kroenke is privately paying for
a new stadium in Inglewood, the Los Angeles Rams once
again exist.
Kellar said on Monday he wishes the city didn’t have
to give any money, and he wonders if Laemmle
could build without city help (Laemmle has said
he wouldn’t come without the subsidy, but he
would build without the parking structure).
Nor is it official if the parking structure will be
free or require payment. Charging for parking would certainly recoup monies faster, but
Mayor Pro Tem Dante Acosta received applause after vehemently declaring Tuesday that
parking will be free.
“Would I like less money? Yes,” Kellar said.
“This is a tremendous opportunity. It will be the
crown jewel for what we’ve done for Downtown
Newhall.”
Furthermore, it’s unknown how many parking
spaces there will be. Crawford said the plan is for a
six-level parking structure with one underground level, but the actual configuration and number of spaces
have not yet been finalized. Boydston said the documents
presented to the council shows 400 spaces at $38,000 per
space, which equals $15.2 million.
That the project is popular in the community isn’t in dispute. Of the 40 public
comments at the council meeting, 90 percent urged approval. That was on top
of the 103 pro-project comment cards Mayor Bob Kellar said he was holding
and the more than 100 emails Acosta said he collected on his phone.
Besides, the mayor said, this is nothing out of the
ordinary. The City of Santa Clarita has helped bring a
Costco and a Home Depot here, and also purchase and
renovate the Canyon Theatre Guild, in which Boydston
serves as executive and artistic director. (Boydston cast the
lone “no” vote Tuesday; Councilmember Laurene Weste recused
herself, because she lives within 500 feet of the project and wanted to
avoid any conflict of interest.) It also balked at Nordstrom’s $20 million price
tag in 1999, and the upscale retailer still has no local presence.
“These are quality of life amenities for our community,” Kellar said.
Whether the cost is worth it remains to be seen.

NCWD and CLWA
Launch Site:
OurSCVWater.com
New Website to Keep Community Informed on Possible Formation
of New Agency
The Newhall County Water District and Castaic Lake Water Agency
have jointly launched a new website to help keep the community
informed as the two entities consider the possibility of combining into
a single valley-wide water agency. The site is OurSCVWater.com.

One Story, One City at Santa
Clarita Public Library
A program returns next month for the second year, promoting reading and discussion
among local residents. Sponsored by the Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library,
and with support from Barnes & Noble, the Santa Clarita Public Library will host
“One Story, One City” events throughout the month of March.
The “One Story, One City” program is for all ages and by engaging readers, the
program promotes a sense of unity and community through literature.
The new site was announced last week at a joint community
workshop NCWD and CLWA hosted to gather initial community
input on the concept of replacing the two agencies by creating a
single new agency. The plan would include a publicly elected board of
directors that would serve the entire Santa Clarita Valley.
This year’s selection is “Mary Coin” by Marisa Silver. Mary Coin is a fictional tale
based on the iconic depression era “Migrant Mother” image taken by Dorothea
Lange in 1936. Set in California, and following several generations, the story follows
a struggling woman who flees the Dust Bowl; a female photographer finding her
passion; and a present-day history professor sifting through family possessions.
NCWD General Manager Steve Cole said the new site is part of
the two agencies’ overall effort to ensure the community has ample
opportunity to not only be informed on the process, but also to
provide input.
Two children’s books, which complement the themes in “Mary Coin,” have been
selected: “Esperanza Rising,” a book about a young Mexican girl who comes to 1930s
California after her family falls on hard times, and “Our California,” a picture book
about the state’s history and attractions. Both books are written by award-winning
California author Pam Muñez Ryan.
“Both agencies are placing a high priority on transparency as we
embark upon this process,” Cole said. “So, we thought it would
be appropriate to create a single website, jointly managed by both
agencies, where we can post news and information about the
discussions, and answer residents’ questions directly.”
CLWA General Manager Matt Stone said the site is designed to offer
clear explanations of the progress being made as the two agencies
work together to determine whether it would make sense to create a
new water agency.
“We’re, of course, very early in this process, and nothing has been
decided yet, but as we move forward we believe it’s very important to
maintain open lines of communication with the community,” Stone
said. “Last week’s workshop and the creation of OurSCVWater.com
are just the beginning of that community engagement.”
The two agencies announced at the end of January that, after nearly
a year of settlement talks intended to resolve litigation between
them, the two sides had reached a consensus on goals, principles
and conditions that, if met, could result in combining the two
agencies into a single water agency. Officials from both agencies
have emphasized the fact that the process is in an exploratory stage,
and the creation of a new public agency will only be pursued if it’s
deemed to be in the best interest of the valley’s water ratepayers.
NCWD is one of four water retailers in the SCV. It provides retail
water services to approximately 44,400 people through 10,000 service
connections. CLWA serves the valley as a wholesale provider of
imported water from the State Water Project and other sources, and
it owns the SCV’s two largest water retailers: CLWA’s Santa Clarita
Water Division and Valencia Water Company, which serve 28,000
and 31,000 connections, respectively.
To further the experience of One Story, One City, free programs will be offered
throughout the month of March by the Santa Clarita Public Library. Participants are
invited to meet the author of “Mary Coin,” Marisa Silver, at a free author event on
Saturday, March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Newhall Library. Silver will discuss her inspiration
for “Mary Coin” and answer audience questions. Books will be available to purchase
on site.
Award-winning illustrator of the picture book “Our California,” Rafael López will
host an illustration demonstration open to all ages on Saturday, March 19 at 1:30 p.m.
at the Valencia Library. Books will be available for purchase on site and López will be
signing books after his presentation.
Residents can enjoy a unique opportunity to take in a City-sponsored art exhibit,
“Essence of the Moment,” while learning more about photographer Dorothea
Lange, courtesy of a special presentation by a “Women in Time” interpreter from the
local chapter of the American Association of University Women. The exhibit is on
Saturday, March 5 from 5-7 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Library.
Participants are also invited to a special screening of the Dorothea Lange documentary,
“Grab a Hunk of Lightning,” punctuated by special commentary from an awardwinning local photographer. The screening will take place on Tuesday, March 22
from 5:45 p.m.-7:45 p.m. at the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library.
In addition to these events, the library is also offering multiple opportunities to
engage with other book lovers through book discussions, and special programming
for adults, children and teens themed to the 1920s through 1940s setting of “Mary
Coin.” These events include a JAM Session featuring live swing music, an ARTree
family history photo folio craft workshop, a genealogy workshop with a focus on the
1930s, and much more.
For more information about these events and to find full programming details for
“One Story, One City,” visit SantaClaritaLibrary.com/OneStoryOneCity or contact
the Santa Clarita Public Library at (661) 259-0750.
OurSCVWater.com includes a summary of the talks that led to
consideration of the possibility of creating a new agency, as well as
information on the principles of discussion and goals that would
need to be met for the two agencies to move forward and create a new
entity. Visitors to the site can also submit questions online, and sign
up to stay engaged by receiving future communications from the two
agencies regarding the possible creation of a new water agency.
The Castaic Lake Water Agency (CLWA) is the Santa
Clarita Valley’s public water wholesaler. One of 29 State
Water Project contractors, the agency receives water
imported from northern California and Kern County
through the California Aqueduct. CLWA operates three
large treatment plants, three major pump stations, three
water storage facilities and over 45 miles of large diameter
transmission pipelines, delivering water to four local water
retailers. For more information about the Castaic Lake
Water Agency, call General Manager Matt Stone at (661)
297-1600 or visit www.clwa.org.
Newhall County Water District traces its roots back to
1913, and is the Santa Clarita Valley’s first public water
utility. The agency currently provides service to more than
44,400 residents in portions of the City of Santa Clarita
and unincorporated Los Angeles County communities,
including Newhall, Canyon Country, Valencia and
Castaic. For more information about the Newhall County
Water District, call General Manager Steve Cole at (661)

OPINION
Lean to the Left
The ‘Why’ Behind
the Sale
Hillary Still Wins
By Robert Patrick Lewis
By Sylvia Turner
D
id you enjoy watching the Super
Bowl this year? With estimates
of 111.9 million people watching
(making it the third largest audience
in television history), chances are you
did. For many Americans, especially
those who aren’t really football fans for
any other games during the year, the
commercials play a larger role than the
actual game.
The other actually thinks, but as
Kahneman points out, this system is
rather lazy, and is quite happy to pass
up being forced to “think” in favor of
allowing the first system to make a
snap decision based on past experience
or beliefs.
Being that I’m currently with a
marketing agency who had a hand
in five commercials that were played
during Super Bowl 50, they were by far
the largest part of the event for me –
but not for the humor or celebrities in
them. I pay attention to the science.
This work fundamentally changed
the way we think in the marketing
industry. The popular opinion used to
be that if we made people laugh, if we
made them happy, cry or emotional,
that would directly associate to the
brand and people would feel good
when they thought of the brand,
nudging them to choose it over
another.
The “Mad Men” era of marketing and
advertising is long gone. It was a much
simpler time in our industry back then,
when sex and celebrities were pretty
much the go-to for any ad campaign to
sell just about any product.
But what Kahneman and a few
other works have shown us (Hugh
Mackay’s “What Makes Us Tick”
and “Decoded” by Phil Barden, to
name a couple) is just how wrong that
assumption is most of the time.
But a new science has emerged that we
marketers have been paying very close
attention to, and so should you – no
matter what industry you’re in. When
I went through my undergraduate
program in marketing, I constantly
heard about the psychology that went
into marketing and advertising, but
once in the industry, I rarely found
agencies actually integrating it.
The field of behavioral economics
emerged to teach us that, while a
person may indicate in a focus group
that they favor a particular brand or
say they favor a certain action (buying
Brand X), they actually take a different
action when the time comes.
The first book that turned my attention
to how we could use science to
understand how people think was
written by Daniel Kahneman, a winner
of the Nobel Prize in economics. His
book was called “Thinking, Fast and
Slow.”
It breaks down the ways in which
the human brain works and how we
make our decisions, be it an instant
“gut” decision or a long decision that
we must “sleep on.” Perhaps most
importantly, he breaks the process of
thinking into two different systems,
aptly named “System 1” and “System
2.” Each is responsible for a different
function of thought, and when you
begin to fully grasp the vast amounts
of information our brains must process
every day, you begin to understand
why. One system is made to quickly
process data and variables based on
“heuristics,” or making decisions
based on other events or things that are
familiar to our experiences.
There are far too many principles
to name them all here, but I highly
suggest you have a look at the books
mentioned above. If you ever want to
know why you do the things you do,
make the choices you make or feel a
strong urge to do something you don’t
necessarily understand, chances are,
one of these books will explain why.
And don’t be surprised as you see the
landscape of commercials, even at the
Super Bowl, changing over the next
few years. Sure, there are some brands
and agencies who will try to stick
with the good old fashioned humor
or scantily clad women, but like with
everything else in business, they will
watch as those harnessing innovation
surpass and leave them in the dust.

he people showed their left-leaning tendencies in New
Hampshire this week. They validated their affinity for socialist Bernie Sanders. And even the Grand Old Party – Trump
is way further left-leaning than those other guys.
Don’t worry, though. Hillary still wins. Did you know that she’s
still gaining more delegates from New Hampshire than Sanders? Due to the party’s nominating system using superdelegates,
she has a minimum of 15 delegates, while his number is 13.
I love the DNC website, because it has clever satire, funny
quotes by Republican candidates, etc. I also like the little facts
they give you about the frontrunners on the Right. The following is just a sampling:
Ben Carson blamed the unrest in Ferguson, Mo. on the Women’s Liberation Movement. He believes America today is like
Nazi Germany and said we are living in a “Gestapo Age.” He
also said, “Obamacare is really, I think, the worst thing that has
happened in this nation since slavery.”
Jeb Bush has slashed taxes for the rich as governor, communicated in his book that single mothers should be publicly
shamed, and wants to end the president’s executive action that
keeps families of undocumented workers together. And (need
we go on?) his last name is “Bush.”
Ted Cruz cost us $24 million with the federal shutdown of
2013. He’s the de facto leader of the Tea Party (that says it all,
actually), and he proposes a 23 percent tax on everything you
buy.
Marco Rubio is another “Tea Party hero.” He also shut down
the government (can you say “Cruz wannabe?). He opposes
immigration reform and would end protection from deportation even for young immigrants who only know the U.S. as their
home. He also said the Paycheck Fairness Act (to help ensure
equal pay for women) was “wasting time.”
Donald Trump is a piece of work, actually (my words). Regarding undocumented workers, Trump says “half of them are
criminals.” His companies have declared bankruptcy four times
(that should be great for our economy). He put out a statement
“calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering
the United States.”
Hook your seatbelts, because there’s plenty more drama on the
way!

I Don’t like Valentine’s Day
I don’t like holidays when you are encouraged
to profess your love for someone based on a fake
holiday that was created to force you to make
purchases. Besides that, I have issues with my
valentine:
*Why is it she can’t say no to anyone but me?
*Why is it she says I don’t listen to her, when half the
time she is talking to herself and expects me to figure
out in a split second who she is talking to?
*Why is it she can clean up any form of dog or
human matter from either end of the body without
blinking an eye, but if she sees a tiny spider in the
house she absolutely freaks out?
*Why is it she gets angry with me when I honk at
someone for a stupid driving move, but when I do
something she thinks is stupid, she yells at me?
*Why is it there are enough of her old clothes to
stock a Goodwill store, but she won’t get rid of any
of them, for fear of a body shape change?
*Why is it she doesn’t complain too much when Fox
News and sports are on television most of the time?
*Why is it she is the most unselfish, caring, giving
and loving person I know, having put up with me
for almost 32 years? I am truly blessed. She is
an incredible wife (most of the time), mother,
grandmother and friend to many. Loves God and
relies on him for guidance. She is the glue that holds
this company together; we would be in deep trouble
without her. I love her dearly, but I still ain’t buying
anything for her on this fake holiday. I just hope
she cooks me a good meal that day. I’m kidding, I’m
kidding.
It’s the Economy, Stupid — What about the Debt,
Dummy?
During the Republicans’ debates have you heard
those hard-hitting questions to the candidates
about the economy and the debt? No? Neither have
I. Instead, we hear questions like: He said this, he
said that – how do you respond to what he said? Is there
anything you want to say about what his campaign did?
What about his statement on eminent domain? Do you
have the temperament to be president? Tell us, what do you
think true conservatism is? How will you heal the divide
between police and our citizens? Will you visit mosques if
you are president? What would you do about the zika virus
if you were president? What is your position on women in
combat? How will you resolve the same sex marriage issue
and the LBGT equal rights controversy?
Our debt is so high, the human mind can’t
"Loving God...
Loving Others"
comprehend how enormous it is, let alone the huge
ramifications it will eventually have. The economy
is stagnate, Wall Street seems to be in intensive care
much of the time, the current administration is
bull-crapping us with bogus unemployment figures,
trying to assure us all is well … and the candidates
get questions like that? Oh, my ranting butt!
To be fair, there have been a few questions about
the economy during the debates, but I have not
heard one freaking question about how any of the
candidates will solve the debt crisis, which many
experts feel is the number one threat to our nation.
In fact, the only one I have heard mentioned is from
one of the astute readers of the Gazette. He wrote:
Doug,
I’m a 55 year old independent. To me the national debt is
the biggest problem we face. I will vote for ANYONE who
convinces me that they will execute the following yearly
plan. 1)Collect $3T in taxes (progressively); 2) Cap all
spending at $2T; 3)Pay down $1T in debt 4)Repeat for 20
years. When you do the math, the debt is gone by about
2037. Once people and businesses would see that we were
on this path, the economy would really grow…
Last year, I tried to get readers to see how the debt
crisis could wreak havoc on all of us.

disappointed with my guy, Ted Cruz, who gave
a weak, noncommittal answer. I loved Trump’s
statement, though. He said, “I support water boarding
and even worse. They’re chopping off heads of Christians
and many other people in the Middle East. They’re
chopping heads off, they laugh at us when they hear we’re
not going to approve water boarding and then they’ll have
a James Foley and others where they cut off their heads.
If elected, I’ll bring back a hell of a lot worse than water
boarding. You can say what you want, I have no doubt that
it does work in terms of information and other things.”
I’m with The Donald. I’m flabbergasted when I hear
people say water boarding is un-American, it’s not
who we are as a nation. You have got to be freaking
kidding me. Maybe if we were more of that kind of
nation, we wouldn’t be such embarrassing wimps in
the eyes of our adversaries. Maybe Iran would think
twice before making fools out of our sailors for the
entire world to see. Maybe we wouldn’t witness those
chicken crap, cowardly bastards with their heads
covered, cutting Christians’ heads off. I say torture the
hell out of any of them if it will save innocent lives and
protect those who could fall under their torturing wrath!
Recent Headlines Catching My Attention (with 2 cents
thrown in)
Senate Report: Illegal Immigrants Wrongfully
Benefited from up to $750M in ObamaCare
Subsidies: Yawn. Yeah, and?
This is some of what I wrote:
As our government keeps growing and growing, it needs
more money to operate, while at the same time, the debt
keeps growing and growing, causing more interest that has
to be paid.
If this continues the way it has been going, every penny
of tax revenue will go towards paying just the debt interest
alone. Then we will have to borrow even more (or hope to)
just to pay for safety and security essentials. If it gets to the
point where all we can borrow is to pay for these essentials,
how does government pay for social security, Medicare,
welfare and food stamps (entitlements)?
At some point, our buddies from other countries are going
to say, “Hey, if you want to borrow more you’re going to
have to pay much higher interest,” and this will put us in a
debt hole so deep, it will be impossible to climb out. Or they
could say, “We aren’t lending you more money; you already
owe us a ton and we don’t think you can pay us back.”
When this happens, the most difficult of decisions will have
to be made. I think we will have no choice but to somehow
pay for the security aspects of the government (military,
etc.). But entitlement funding will go away, because we’ll be
unable to pay the high interest of borrowing more or will be
prevented from borrowing at all.
Social security, disability and government subsidized
medical payments will cease, food stamps won’t be
available. It will be horrific! Will people just sit at home
starving to death or dying from lack of medicine? I don’t
think so; the civil unrest will make Ferguson and Baltimore
look like picnics! When people get frightened and desperate,
especially for their kids, many won’t stop at anything.
So, come on debate moderators and candidates, get
your head out of the sand. We would really like hard
facts about how each candidate would save us from
this impending disaster. Leave the nonsensical stuff
you get all wrapped up in to the states.

Senior Center. The Celebrity Waiter Dinner will be held on February 27,
2016 and each table of guests will offer their own creative version of the
theme, “Fun and Games.”
Auction items range from appealing to elaborate, and this year is no different.

to $2,500 value) is a big ticket item on the auction block. Another prospect
for bidding guests is a day in Sacramento with State Assemblyman Scott

on the floor of the Assembly, The lucky auction winner will be transported
by Special Services to a power lunch with Assemblyman Wilk at Frank
Fats, a popular restaurant for Sacramento VIPs, and will receive a special
certificate of recognition.
Another auction item is a taping of the CBS hit comedy, “The Big Bang
Theory,” a package that includes two tickets to the show during the 2016/17
season, an autographed cast photo, past episodes on DVD and a Warner
Bros. Studio lot tour.
A number of unique trips and social events will be available for live auction at
the event also. Among the confirmed prizes are: Two nights at the boutique

Dodgers’ opening day game against the Diamondbacks, golf at a local golf
course, and more sports-related tickets and gifts still being confirmed. The
Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort is donating an overnight stay plus two
rounds of golf.
The Santa Clarita Main Events package will include tickets for two to
some of the community’s most prestigious non-profit and community
events — including Vine to Wine, Gentlemen for a Cause, The Wine Affair,
Sunset in the Vineyard, Evening Under the Stars, Dancing With Our Stars,
LUNAFEST women’s film festival, Taste of the Town, and a wine tasting at
Reyes Winery. The package also will include four VIP tickets to the Amgen
Tour, Concerts in the Park and the SCV Cowboy Festival, plus more.
A boat trip around Ventura Harbor will include a full catered meal for
four guests. As usual, bidders will have the opportunity to bid on the head
table for the 2017 Celebrity Waiter Dinner, which this year will include the
services of long-time Head Waiter winner Michel Delcros.
A Night of Fun & Games, with Comfort Keepers In-Home Care serving as
the presenting sponsor, has the support of a wide swath of the community.
Sponsors already have committed to 24 tables, leaving only six available
before the dinner reaches a “sold-out” capacity of 30 tables.
Bill Lively, once again, will serve as event chair and master of ceremonies,
supported by two new co-chairs: Vanessa Wilk and Brian Koegle. In keeping
with this year’s theme of “A Night of Fun and Games,” Auctioneer Curt
Waite is working on a surprise game that will give all guests a chance to
win a valuable prize. Dancing to a live band, live entertainment and waiter
antics are all part of the evening. More than 35 “waiters” have signed up
to compete for the Stanley Award, which goes to the waiter who garners
the most dollars in scrip “tips” during the evening. Several waiters already
have started pre-event fundraising activities to boost their chances of being
named the evening’s Favorite Waiter.
Premium tables are available now and the committee already is nearing
its goal to sign up 30 sponsored tables before this year’s dinner. Table
sponsorships are available at levels ranging from the $10,000, $5,000, $3,500
$2,500 and $1,500, each seating 10 guests. Individual seats can be reserved
for $150 each, which includes $50 in scrip, which can be used to “tip” the
waiter. Sponsors can provide their own “celebrity” waiter or request the
committee to provide a waiter.
The table décor matches the theme, and most guests dress in costumes to
complement their table’s theme, making Celebrity Waiter “one of the most
fun events in town,” says Koegle.
Online visitors can see photos of past events and comments on Facebook
at https://www.facebook.com/scvcelebritywaiter/?fref=ts. Guests and
table sponsors can make purchases online and obtain further information at

return instructions at the bottom.

Nudie’s Custom Java

hile a lot of people would have to strain to remember their grandparents, Jamie Nudie keeps hers at the forefront of her mind – and her
business. Nudie’s Custom Java is a coffee shop dedicated to Bobbie and Nudie

the center of the Hollywood social elite.

Jamie’s biggest challenge, she said, is “getting up on the first alarm,” to make
it by 6 a.m. to open the doors for customers.
“The fun part is all the people that come in,” Jamie said. “It takes them back
in time and I get to reeducate the next generation.”
The restaurant carries breakfast sandwiches and both hot and cold coffee drinks, like
iced mocha. Jamie’s pastry chef is an old
classmate, and she bakes cakes, brownies,
cookies and muffins. Nudie’s can seat 24
diners inside and when the weather permits, customers can sit at outdoor patio
tables.
Wherever you sit and whatever you order,
Jamie’s aim is to always make it personable.
“I opened it in memory of my
grandparents,” said Jamie Nudie.
“It’s a place to come, like Nudie’s
was. They’d come in and they’d be
having a jam session. I was the one

Customers can become a part of
Hollywood history, with Jamie’s Tshirts and memorabilia for sale. And
the restaurant will soon add to their
merchandise
rhinestone-studded
replicas of the original “Nudie jackets.”
Opened last fall where Railroad
Café was located in Newhall, its beginnings grew from Jamie’s visit to
the hair salon nearby, Marigold. Her hairdresser friend told Jamie there was a
coffee shop venue for sale and it piqued her interest.

SCV Education Foundation Hires
Local Leader as New Executive Director
J
ackie Hartmann of Canyon Country was hired as executive director of
the SCV Education Foundation earlier this week. Prior to joining the
foundation, she served in a variety of roles at several large companies and
distinguished herself as a community volunteer.
“Education is critical to our community’s well-being and its future, and
the SCV Education Foundation is thrilled to have Jackie Hartmann to
help us continue our service to the Santa Clarita Valley,” said James S.
Backer, president of the foundation.
Hartmann has almost 30 years of experience as a human resources professional with such companies as Six Flags and L’Oreal, where she was
responsible for all aspects of the personnel function, including recruiting,
employee relations, benefits and legal compliance.
Jackie earned her Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Northridge and her Master of Science degree from the University
of Oregon. She is married, has two adult children, and has been a resident
of the SCV since 1990.
Complementing her work experience is 20 years as a volunteer in numerous Santa Clarita non-profits. She has been a constant force with the local
Special Olympics program as a coach,
event coordinator, venue supervisor and
leadership committee member. Last
year, Hartmann was chair of the Host
Town Santa Clarita effort in conjunction with the Special Olympics World
Summer Games. She was responsible for
providing housing for four days for the
140 Special Olympics athletes from four
countries staying in Santa Clarita. She
also handled the logistics of fundraising,
food, entertainment, sports training and
community events.
Originally created in 1984 as the Education Committee of the SCV
Chamber of Commerce, the foundation was formed as a non-profit in
1995 to benefit Santa Clarita’s public K-12
schools. Activities of the SCV Education
Foundation include “Bag of Books,” a
literacy program for young readers, and
“Read with Me!” which gives much needed
one-on-one reading assistance from community volunteers.
Additional volunteer hours have been
spent with Bridges to Ability, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation and Professionals in Human Resources.
The SCV Education Foundation has
contributed over $150,000 in scholarships
to high school students since 1988. In
addition, the nonprofit has awarded over
$550,000 in grants — called Teacher Innovation Grants – for a variety of school
projects, such as computer software, science
equipment and the arts. Teacher Tribute, an
annual program for over 30 years, honors
one outstanding teacher from each school.

Zach Phipps
A junior at Saugus High School on the varsity basketball team,
Zach Phipps scored a team-high 18 points in the Centurions’
60-54 win over Golden Valley High School in a Foothill League
game last week. Zach scored nine points in the fourth quarter,
helping Saugus snap a five-game losing streak.
“Zach is one of the most competitive players I’ve
ever coached,” said Saugus Varsity Basketball Coach Bill
Bedgood. “He works hard on the court and in the weight

Children’s Orchard
By Martha Michael
For almost two decades, young families in Santa Clarita have been able to
cut their expenses, thanks to Children’s Orchard, a resale children’s store
offering equipment and clothing for newborns through pre-teens. The store
sells mostly clothing, but also carries a variety of equipment for new moms
and dads, including strollers, Pack ‘N Play portable cribs and high chairs,
which are pretty popular.
“These items can run $100-$300, and you can get them here for around
$50,” says Janell Costello, who
has owned Children’s Orchard for
seven years. “You can go to Buy
Buy Baby and buy one or two
things, or here you can buy everything you need.”
Not only do customers find mainstream merchandise like Carter’s
and Graco, the store carries clothing from high-end stores such as
Abercrombie & Fitch.
“You can get a Justice shirt for $25 at the store or $5 here,” Costello explains. “And we carry boutique brands, usually sold in higher end stores,
like Flowers by Zoe and Little Max.”
The boys that come in the store like Costello’s collection of clothes by
Hurley, Volcom and Quiksilver, she says.
Some of Children’s Orchard clients don’t just save money at the store, they
make money there. Costello and her staff buy their merchandise from families whose little ones have outgrown them. What she pays per item varies,
based on the label.
It’s a great option “when children outgrow their items, as opposed to giving it away,” says Costello, who pays cash, or clients can use their earnings
as store credit, which gets them 30 percent more value. “We test every toy,
every piece of equipment, and we
also check it for recalls. We want to
make sure it’s safe.”
The store owner and her staff members purchase items between 10 a.m.
and 4 p.m. seven days a week, limited
in quantity to one white trash bag of
merchandise.
Seeing clients in both buying mode
and selling mode means Costello
can develop relationships over time. “It’s fun getting to know moms in the
community, getting to see their kids grow,” she says.
Children’s Orchard hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-5:30
p.m.; and Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The store is located at 26570 Bouquet Canyon
Road in Santa Clarita; (661) 263-1484. Visit http://www.childrensorchard.com/

On This Date in SCV History:
• Strange for February, this week in 2016 was HOT. But the same week in 1946
saw the mercury fall to below the 20s in some canyons.
One of America’s most fascinating spots, the SCV is one of the country’s most
significant historical areas. Here’s what happened in our valley on this week in
history:
60 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, 1956 ...
• Five inches of rain fell in one day in Newhall.
• It was a rather horrific still-life sculpture. Carrying a rabbit, an owl flew to the
top of high tension wires and predator and prey were charred as a frozen black
still life.
• Blessedly, Hart High moved out of the powerful Ventura League. They had
spent a few years being clobbered by much bigger schools from Oxnard, Ventura and Santa Paula.
IN EONS GONE BY …
• One of the West’s most controversial figures was Edward Fitzgerald Beale.
Abraham Lincoln was asked to appoint Beale as Surveyor General of the
United States. Lincoln sarcastically referred to him as “Master of all he surveys” and refused to make the appointment. Beale was a complicated figure,

Hate Crimes - Shameful and Misdirected
by Robin Sandoval
L
ast November, a man boarded a Los Angeles County Metro bus and assaulted the driver, Balwinder Jit Singh. During the assault, the man was
reported to have repeatedly referred to the victim as a “suicide bomber” and
“terrorist.” Initially, the LAPD investigated the crime as a simple assault, but
after the urging of nine civil rights groups, the case has been officially reopened and will now be investigated as a hate crime.
or ethnicity, or religion. California Penal Code 422.6 PC makes it a serious
crime to interfere with someone’s civil rights, attack them, or destroy/deface
their property based on any of the aforementioned criteria. Doing so is a
standalone crime that carries the possible penalties of: misdemeanor probation, up to one year in county jail, a fine of up to $5,000 and/or up to 400
hours of community service.
Ever since the terrorist attacks on September 11, Arab, Middle Eastern,
Muslim and Southeast Asian Americans have increasingly been victims of
hate crimes. The reports were highest immediately following the 9/11 attacks,
but numbers gradually went down as time went on. However, after the recent
attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, reports of hate crimes against these community members have once again surged to their post-9/11 numbers.
When a crime is investigated as a hate crime, that is, not a standalone violation of PC 422.6, but another crime that fits the criteria making it a hate
crime, then the potential sentence for that crime will be enhanced. For misdemeanors that are charged as hate crimes, the enhanced penalties include:
felony probation, up to three years in state prison, and/or a fine of up to
$10,000. Keep in mind, the typical penalties for misdemeanor crimes are
informal probation, up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
Thus, if a misdemeanor is charged as a hate crime, the sentence enhancement
is rather significant.
Sikhs, while being neither Muslim nor Middle Eastern, have unfortunately
found themselves the targets of many hate crimes because of their traditional
dress. Sikhs will typically wear a turban and keep untrimmed beards.
The reason civil rights groups had been calling for a renewed investigation
focusing on the offense as a hate crime, as opposed to simple assault, is because of what appears to have spurred the suspect into attacking the victim:
his looks.
A hate crime is both a crime in and of itself, as well as an enhancement that
can be added when a person commits a crime (typically assault or vandalism)
because of that person’s disability, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, race
bad boys and girls
A 36-year-old furniture mover from Santa Clarita was brought up on charges of
being under the influence of toluene, a substance associated with paint thinners.
Last week, two San Fernando men were brought in for transporting/selling a
controlled substance. This week, two more out-of-towners – a 44-year-old field
worker from Bakersfield and a 34-year-old unemployed Panorama City man –
were brought up on the same charges.
For felonies that are charged as hate crimes, the enhanced penalties include
an additional 1-3 years in state prison. This means that if the sentence for the
underlying crime is two years in prison, the defendant can receive an additional 1-3 years added onto their sentence if the crime is charged as a hate
crime.

Passages Museum of the Bible
Extends Stay to April
If you have not made it to the site of Passages in Valencia, there is still time to visit the
museum over the next two months. Formerly slated to close this month, the public is
welcome to explore the four sections in the exhibit, which examines the origin of the
Bible and highlights its significance in history, through April 30, 2016.
When Orchard Supply Hardware moved out of the space on Bouquet Canyon Road,
Hobby Lobby was given the opportunity to do business there. The owner of Hobby Lobby instead chose to house the Passages exhibit there for over a year, enabling
Southern California residents to tour through it before the collection is moved to
Washington DC, to a new Museum of the Bible scheduled to open.
The four areas of study include: transmission, translation, impact and controversy.
The approximately 400 pieces in the collection stem from the Jewish, Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox faiths.

L.A. County Board of Supervisors Places St. Francis Dam Disaster
Moratorium on Marijuana Dealers
Subject of Talk by Film
A
n amended motion about marijuana
regulation by L.A. County Supervisor
Michael D. Antonovich was upheld at Tuesday’s
meeting of the board. They agreed to a 45-day
moratorium on the cultivation, manufacturing,
laboratory testing and distribution of medical
marijuana in unincorporated areas. It allows city
leaders time to study aspects related to the medical
marijuana business.
The Medical Marijuana Regulation and
Safety Act of 2015 created a state agency to
regulate activities in California, but allows
local jurisdictions to pass additional ordinances
restricting activities. L.A. County has banned
medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated
areas since 2011.
Also at the meeting, the Board of Supervisors
approved Antonovich’s motion to allocate
$150,000 to Bridge to Home, the Santa Clarita
nonprofit group benefiting the homeless
population. The funding will likely include a
winter shelter and year round services, such as
counseling and transitional housing.
The last of several meetings aimed at assessing
the needs for county parks in unincorporated
areas has been scheduled for February 25, 2016.
Community meetings were held for Castaic and
Agua Dulce. Other parts of the Santa Clarita
Valley included in the study are Stevenson Ranch,
Westridge, Southern Oaks, Sunset Pointe and
the unincorporated parts of Newhall. For more
information, including study areas and maps, visit
lacountyparkneeds.org.
Wilk Receives Perfect Score for
Small Business Voting Record
T
he National Federation of Independent Business
announced that Assemblyman Scott Wilk (R-Santa
Clarita) earned a 100 percent voting record for his efforts
to protect and promote small business in 2015.
Producer
It has been almost 90 years since the local disaster
dubbed the “worst civil engineering failure in the 20th
century” occurred in the Santa Clarita Valley. Author
and documentary film producer Jon Wilkman will be
the speaker at an upcoming library event in Newhall
where he will discuss his new book on the subject.
Entitled “Floodpath: The Deadliest Man-Made Disaster of 20th-Century America and the Making of Modern Los Angeles,” the book’s content may be fairly
obvious. But guests at the free event will gain more
details and insights into the dam’s chief engineer,
William Mulholland, as well as reminders and lessons
from the collapse of the dam on March 12, 1928.
In his book, the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker
Wilkman revisits the deluge that claimed nearly 500
lives. Based on more than 20 years of research and
driven by eyewitness accounts, combining urban history and life-and-death drama with a technological detective story, he offers a wealth of information viewed
through a different lens.
The community is invited to attend the lecture on
Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Newhall
Library, 24500 Main Street. It is sponsored by the
Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society. For more information, email [email protected].
“Small businesses are and will continue to be the backbone of our state’s economy,” Wilk said. “As small businesses make up 99.45 percent of business in California,
it is imperative the Legislature (does) all we can to foster
small business. I’m honored to have received this rating
from NFIB, and I remain committed to fighting for small
business in the Legislature.”
NFIB tracks the key legislative issues identified by their
small business members every session. The NFIB voting
record provides an evaluation of a legislator’s attitude toward small business based on votes taken in committee
and on the floor. Some key issues the NFIB focuses on include taxes, healthcare, labor, regulatory reform, agriculture, energy, and the economy.
NFIB/CA State Executive Director Tom Scott commented, “Assemblyman Wilk’s 100 percent
NFIB rating is a reflection of his hard work fighting for small businesses every day in Sacramento. Between the multitudes of challenges facing small business, we thank Assemblyman Wilk for
standing up against further burdens to job creation in California.”
The 38th Assembly District encompasses Simi Valley, the northwestern section of the San Fernando Valley
and most of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Medal of Honor Recipient
Speaks at Golden Valley
High School
By Martha Michael
Most teenagers would probably say
that “Medal of Honor” is the name
of a video game series and be unaware of the honor shared by real
members of that exclusive club –
men and women who showed such
bravery in the U.S. Armed forces
that they were awarded the highest
military honor in America.
After Thursday’s assembly, students
at Golden Valley High School would
probably answer that differently.
They were introduced to Col. Jay
Vargas, a recipient of the Medal of
Honor from his service in Vietnam
half a century ago. Vargas spoke to
the local teenagers about his experiences, including the story of his
actions that led President Richard
Nixon to honor him with the award.
Students gathered in the auditorium
where they heard him describe a
battle in the spring of 1968, when
Vargas’ company engaged in fierce
combat with the enemy at the village of Dai Do. During the fighting,
he was able to free one of his platoons, pinned down by heavy fire,
by personally destroying three enemy machine gun positions. Vargas
then carried to safety his seriously
wounded battalion commander and
saved seven other Marines, despite
being wounded himself. He refused
to leave the field of battle until his
injuries compelled him to do so.

Bunco For Hope
Fundraiser to be Held
By Martha Michael
N
ext Saturday, February 20, 2016 game-loving guests will head to The
Centre (aka The Santa Clarita Activities Center) to raise money for a
cause. The 5th Annual Bunco For Hope event is a day of fun that benefits
Circle of Hope, a nonprofit group aiding victims of cervical, colon, ovarian, prostate, testicular, uterine or breast cancer.
Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. for the brunch, beginning at 11 a.m., and
Bunco tournament, which commences at 12 noon. There will be auction
and raffle winners, as well as a champagne toast included with the $45
ticket price. The event ends at 4 p.m.
The Centre is located at 20880 Centre Pointe Pkwy in Santa Clarita. For
more information or to register for the tournament, visit Circleofhopeinc.
org.
Col. Vargas was perhaps the first
member of the armed services many
of the teens had heard from, and
certainly the only medal recipient
that most, or all of those present,
had ever seen. Arranging the visit
from a decorated soldier was considered a powerful format to underscore the significance of serving in
the armed forces.
SCVi Learners Taking to the Skies
A
real life flight experience will
punctuate Student Soaring
Day at a local charter school. On
Tuesday, Feb. 16, Southern California Soaring Academy will bring a
glider to SCVi Charter School for
students to examine.
the development of 21st century skills.
SCVi emphasizes project-based learning
in a literacy- and math-rich environment
that also promotes social and emotional
development.
Both Lengning and Bennett credited
Kathleen Fredette, head of STEAM Initiatives for iLEAD Schools, with playing
a key role in establishing the connection
between SCVi and the soaring academy.
They said it was Fredette, a member of
the board of advisors for the SCSA’s
STEM-Glider Program, who established
the vision to bring aeronautics to the
charter school’s learners.
“These learners are studying most
of the concepts real pilots learn
about, and have to know how the
aircraft works,” said Dustin Lengning, an 8th grade science facilitator
at SCVi, the founding campus of
iLEAD Schools. “They need to
know about fluid dynamics, all
three of Newton’s laws of motion,
and how every piece on that aircraft works. These learners are then
going to have the opportunity to fly
in, and pilot, real aircraft under the supervision of
qualified pilots.”
Lengning said the program, in its second
year at SCVi, has been a hit with students.
“I am always looking for big, large-scale, fun, realworld applications for my learners,” said Lengning, who along with Faulkner has received SCSA
flight training as part of the partnership with SCVi.
“When I had the opportunity to take to the skies, I
knew my learners were going to love it.”
Julie Bennett, director of nonprofit activities for
the SCSA, said the soaring academy will trailer
and stage the glider in the parking lot of SCVi, a
tuition-free public charter school located at 28060
Hasley Canyon Road.
Lengning said he hopes it will inspire an interest for
students, emphasizing what a unique opportunity it
is.
“Students from the 8th grade (Dustin Lengning
and Keith Falkner’s classes) have been learning
about aerodynamics, Bernoulli’s principle, etc., and
during this event, they will learn hands-on at the
glider in four modules, with a pilot from the Soaring Academy conducting each module,” Bennett
said. “Then in the afternoon students from the 11th
grade physics class (Zaloa Goiri) will participate in
the same way.”
“How many kids can say they flew a real airplane?”
he said. “If I can inspire even one learner to get into
the field, who otherwise would never have had the
opportunity, it is a win.”
The up-close lesson is a prelude to a special “flying
day” to be held at the Antelope Valley airfield,
where SCSA is based. The 8th-graders will have a
chance to join an SCSA pilot and fly in the gliders
on Feb. 28, and the 11th grade flying date is to be
held later in the spring
.
SCVi Charter School is an open and fun multiage classroom environment that promotes and
celebrates independent thinking, cooperation and
SCVi offers project-based K-12 curriculum and student-led
assessment with global and culturally diverse influences.
The tuition-free charter school emphasizes an inquirybased, learner-centered approach to education. SCVi’s primary goal is to help learners lead a successful and fulfilled
life while contributing to the world around them. More
