Diluted earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter were $0.63. EPS in the prior-year quarter, which included gains on sales of our interests in E! Entertainment and Us Weekly, income from the discontinued operations of the ABC Radio business, and an equity-based compensation plan modification charge that together increased earnings by $0.30 per share, were $0.79. “We’ve started off 2008 with another outstanding quarter, marked by strong creative and operational performances,” said Robert A. High School Musical 2 premiered on Disney Channel U.S. in August 2007 and attracted one of the largest audience ever for any basic-cable telecast with an initial viewership of 18.6 million. It has now been seen by over 179 million total viewers around the world. Its soundtrack was the #2 album of 2007 in the U.S., achieving global sales of over 6.5 million. The Walt Disney Studios is taking the latest advances in digital 3-D technology “to infinity and beyond” with ambitious plans to debut new Disney Digital 3-D™ versions of Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story on October 2nd, 2009, and Toy Story 2 on February 12th, 2010, it was recently announced. Both of these animated features are being newly converted to 3-D in advance of the June 18th, 2010 release of Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 3, which is being produced as a 3-D motion picture and will represent the state-ofthe-art for the genre. Disney’s The Lion King Continues to Roar Across the Globe Disney’s The Lion King, now in its eleventh year on Broadway, continues to dominate the theatrical landscape across the globe. With over 45 million audience members worldwide to date, the theatrical life of Disney’s biggest stage hit seems to have no end in sight. The Johannesburg production of The Lion King recently concluded its historic South African run at The Teatro at Montecasino on February 17th, marking the closing of the longest-running stage production in South African history. Disney Theatrical Group also recently announced that after an unprecedented six seasons of touring two companies of The Lion King, one of the two record-setting tours would complete its final stop in Milwaukee, WI on March 2. As demand for the production remains strong, the second tour will continue indefinitely. Page 4 News From News From ABC Television Network NBA Forms New China Entity The National Basketball Association recently announced the formation of NBA China, a new entity that will conduct all of the league’s businesses in Greater China. ABC Entertainment Picks Up Nine Series for Next Season On February 11th, ABC Entertainment announced pickups for nine of its most popular shows, returning broadcast television’s most successful fall series. ABC Entertainment ordered episodes of Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Dirty Sexy Money, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Private Practice, Pushing Daisies, Samantha Who? and Ugly Betty. On average during Fall 2007 (10 complete weeks: 9/24-12/2/07), ABC was the No. 1 network among Adults 18-49, delivering the top position in the key young adult sales demo on 7 of the first 10 weeks of the season and ranking No. 1 during the November Sweep for the third consecutive year. In addition, ABC claimed eight of the Top 20 highest-rated TV shows among young adults during the fall, including five of the Top 10 freshman series. Five strategic partners will invest $253 million to acquire 11% of the company in preferred equity. The strategic partners are ESPN, Bank of China Group Investment, Legend Holdings Limited, Li Ka Shing Foundation and China Merchants Investments. Tim Chen, the former CEO of Microsoft Greater China, joined the NBA on October 15, 2007, and will lead the new entity as its CEO. NBA China will be governed by a Board of Directors that will include representatives of the strategic investors as well as Indiana Pacers owner Herb Simon, Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and NBA executives Adam Silver, Deputy Commissioner and COO, Heidi Ueberroth, President of Global Marketing Partnerships and International Business Operations, and Commissioner Stern. The NBA has interacted with Chinese basketball for decades, including first hosting the Chinese National team in 1985 and regularly providing training for the Team through U.S. coaching clinics, exhibition matches and an invitation to the 2007 NBA Summer League. The NBA currently has relationships with 51 Chinese telecasters including a partnership of more than 20 years with national broadcaster CCTV, has organized hundreds of touring basketball events for fans and currently maintains 16 marketing partnerships with a combination of Chinese-based corporations and U.S.-based multinationals. ESPN.com Enters Content Agreement with Major League Gaming ESPN.com, the leading online sports destination, recently announced it has entered a content agreement with Major League Gaming (MLG), the leading professional video game league. ESPN will serve as a primary outlet for news about MLG, providing extensive digital coverage of MLG’s 2008 Pro Circuit Competitions, including exclusive streamed matches, pro player interviews, and scores and stats. Additionally, MLG will host ESPN co-branded online video game tournaments. The multimedia offerings provided complete coverage of the world’s leading winter action sports competition, held January 24-27 in Aspen, Colorado, to fans everywhere. • Television: Winter X Games 12 was ESPN’s most-watched Winter X Games in history. • Internet: EXPN.com and ESPN360.com offered more than 40 hours of live online programming. Playhouse Disney Gives Preschoolers a Greener Start to the New Year Playhouse Disney recently announced it is joining forces with the Preschool Learning Alliance on the biggest ever trial of educational materials to teach preschoolers about the environment through play. The trial will see 7,300 nurseries receive a free pack as part of Playhouse Disney’s Playing for the Planet campaign launched earlier last year. The move follows new independent research*, which found that 3 out of 4 parents (74%) believe the subject of the environment should be included on the preschool curriculum. Page 6 Disney Parks to Create Attraction based on Pop Culture Phenomenon Walt Disney Parks and Resorts will create an American Idol attraction that will bring the television and pop culture phenomenon to life at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The attraction, slated to debut in late 2008, will be located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park and will follow the model of the high-energy show. Disney guests will be able to experience the challenge of auditioning, the rush of performing on stage in competition, or the thrill of judging the performances in a live interactive entertainment setting with all the glitz and glamour of the distinctive American Idol set. Stars Live Out Their Disney Fantasies From Never Land to flying carpets to the forested domain of an Indian princess, stars travel to their very own Fantasylands in a new round of celebrity images from famed photographer Annie Leibovitz. Stars in the new images include Jennifer Lopez (Jasmine) and husband Marc Anthony (Aladdin), Whoopi Goldberg (Genie), Gisele Bündchen (Wendy Darling), Mikhail Baryshnikov (Peter Pan), Tina Fey (Tinker Bell) and Jessica Biel (Pocahontas). Disneyland Resort to showcase Innoventions Dream Home The Disneyland Resort recently announced a five-year alliance with Microsoft, HP, Life|ware and home builder Taylor Morrison to showcase integrated digital technologies for the home in the immersive, story-telling experiences. The alliance includes the design and development of the new Innoventions Dream Home attraction, a 5,000+ sq. ft. home belonging to the fictional Elias family, scheduled to open in May in Tomorrowland at the Disneyland Resort. Page 7 Disney Interactive Studios Names Jean-Marcel Nicolai as Senior Vice President, Global Production Disney Interactive Studios recently announced the addition of Jean-Marcel Nicolai to its executive team as senior vice president, global production. He will oversee Disney’s worldwide video game production including the company’s five internal development studios, externally developed projects and future studio expansion. Nicolai will be based at headquarters in Glendale, Calif. reporting to Graham Hopper, executive vice president and general manager. this season’s must-have gift lists. Sales of Disney video games, book titles and electronics inspired by Disney Channel hits High School Musical and Hannah Montana have been ahead of last year at key retailers and online at DisneyShopping.com.
