Ben Schapiro: From the
Director’s Desk
Over the years, my
conversations with
patrons have regularly
elicited several themes
about the library
building. Most say the
building offers a
welcoming feeling of warmth that
is unique for area libraries. It is built
on a human scale and the south
exposure can fill the main floor
with a delightful natural light—
great for reading and the occasional nap. At the same time, while
some of the details, like our brass
chandeliers, have a distinct charm,
others, like the many narrow stairways, can hamper access to collections for many patrons.
The public forum we hosted in
January brought forth many more
reactions, opinions and suggestions
about our building. We were
pleased at the turnout by both
residents and Village officials who
came to share their thinking on the
current building and how it fits the
needs of Morton Grove. Moderated
by Library Building consultant
George Lawson, the forum highlighted a number of facts and views
about the Library.
Since 2000, use of the building has
increased dramatically. Adult program attendance has gone up
95.8%. Youth Services program
attendance has gone up 245.3%.
In 2009, 34,244 people attended
library programs compared to
12,648 in 2000. The number of inlibrary Internet users has gone up
289.8% (from 6,281 in 2000 to
24,485 in 2009) and total circulation
has gone up 44.2% in the same
time frame. Clearly, the current
building is heavily used.
Here is a sampling of the many
thoughtful comments and suggestions we received during this very
productive meeting:
Positive reactions:
• The Library is a tremendous
cultural asset for the community
with its programs and collections.
2
• It provides a wide range of
wonderful programs. More space
is needed for these programs and
for the meetings of community
groups.
• The staff has a great service attitude that the community appreciates (this comment met with
general audience assent/applause).
• People like the auditorium space,
the stepped seating, the stage.
Concerns:
• Collection shelving is very limited.
• Parking is very limited.
• Sound is an issue in the main part
of the library. It is very distracting.
• Access: Patrons should be able to
both enter and exit from both sets
of doors.
• ADA access is needed to allow all
patrons access to the collections
on the mezzanine.
Suggestions/Ideas/Thoughts:
• A drop-in arts and crafts program
for children would be wonderful.
• The nonfiction collections should
be more prominently featured in
the building layout and in special
displays.
• Let’s do more for teens to capture
their interest.
• Be creative in re-organizing the
building layout to attract residents
who don’t currently use the library.
• Be careful considering the
economy and project costs when
thinking about a building project.
Some residents are very concerned
about the cost of potential new
building.
• Don’t be shortsighted about the
economy. We want a library that
will draw people to Morton Grove.
• The library is a magnet, a destination. If we won’t invest in ourselves, who will?
• Morton Grove needs something
special, an attraction.
• Would a branch library make
sense for Morton Grove?
• The challenge is putting “modern”
and “charming” together in the
same sentence. (People like the
charm of the existing building but
also want a modern library facility).
• Does the “charm” get in the way
of maximum service?

The U.S. Census: How
People Are Counted
Tues., Mar. 9, 11:30 am
The federal government distributes
more than $400 billion annually to
state, local and tribal governments
based on census data. The 2010
Census form includes ten questions
and takes about ten minutes to complete. In March, every U.S. household
should receive a census form either
by mail or in person from a census
worker. By participating in the census, you can help create a better
future for yourself and for those
important to you. A representative
of the U.S. Census Bureau will discuss
the census-taking process and
answer questions about the forms at
Movies, Munchies and More, on
March 9, at 11:30.
What’s New in Digital
Cameras
Wed., Mar. 3, 7 – 8:30 pm
Sean West, from Abt Electronics, will
show you the latest digital cameras
and will discuss how to use them and
how to evaluate the different features so that you can choose the best

Meet Our New Readers
Services Librarian
Whether you come to the Reference
Services desk in person or talk to a
librarian on the phone
or online, you might
have thought that it
would be helpful to
know more about the
team of librarians
assisting you. Or perKatie Nolan
haps you just want to
put a face with a name for the
librarian who assisted you in your
research. We can help you with
that! Starting with this issue, we will
introduce the Morton Grove Public
Library’s Reference Librarians to you
and give you a brief overview of
each librarian’s areas of expertise.
I’d like to introduce the Library’s
new Readers Services librarian, Katie
Nolan. Ms. Nolan is not new to the
Library; she has been a part of the
reference team since June of 2009
Census Questionnaire
Assistance Center
The Morton Grove Public Library
will be serving as a Census
Questionnaire Assistance Center
from March 19 – April 19. Some
individuals or groups have unique
living situations and the Census
Bureau can help define residence
rules. Ask questions and get
in-person assistance completing
your census form. Call the
Reference Services Desk at 847929-5101 for Census Center hours.
Workforce Investment Act
Orientation
Fri., Mar. 5, 9:30 – 11:30 am
Fri. Apr. 2, 9:30 – 11:30 am
The Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
of 1998 provides the framework for
a unique national workforce preparation and employment system
designed to meet the needs of both
job seekers and those who want to
further their careers. The most
important aspect of the Act is its
focus on meeting the needs of businesses for skilled workers and the
training, education and employment
and only recently changed roles and
titles.
But what does a Readers Services
(RS) Librarian do? Aside from helping answer patron questions and
concerns at the Reference Services
desk, an RS librarian is steeped in
all things fiction and literary. She
orders fiction and audiobooks, oversees book discussion groups, creates
book lists and is always happy to
provide reading recommendations
for patrons.
As a library, we want you to find
something to read that is interesting, fun, and/or useful and we take
that mission very seriously. To that
end, we have set up several services
to help you find what you need.
Want to know what is new and hot
in any number of different genres?
Try our print/e-mail book recommendation service, Matchbook.
Tired of long silent commutes in the
car? Skim through our growing col-
needs of individuals. Learn about
what services are available and what
assistance you qualify for while
searching for a job. To register, go
to www.worknetncc.com or call
847-864-3530.

From the Director’s Desk
continued from page 2
The last two comments are very
important when any thought is
given to the future of MGPL. The
building fits with this community
and people are very attached to its
scale. In my experience, charm does
not need to get in the way of service and that service is enhanced in
a building that is comfortable and
welcoming. If people like the
space, then they also appreciate
what goes on in that space.
So, one of our major challenges is
to retain the warm feel of this
building in whatever approach is
chosen to address its limitations.
At the end of the evening I could
not agree more with the last resident to speak who stated:
“I hate change. I was thrilled when
they built this building, but life is
change. I hope the community is
open to the possibilities a building
project would bring.”
Sat., Apr. 17, 10 am
This session is intended for people
who have attended one of the
following workshops: MS Word 2007,
Excel 2007, or PowerPoint 2007.
We should not see print and
electronic literature as in
competition, but rather in
conversation. The more voices
that join in, the richer the
dialogue is likely to be.
