Progressive yet rooted in history,
the area is significant both for what
happens here now, and because of
what has gone before. It’s the perfect
place to shop, dine and visit for a day,
an evening, a weekend or an extended
stay. Every season boasts exciting events
and festivals.
Anchoring the beautiful area is the
charming Village of East Aurora. Rich
in history, East Aurora was once home
to the 13th American President, Millard
Fillmore, and to Elbert Hubbard, the
founder of the Roycroft movement.
A visit to East Aurora is the best of
both worlds, a visit to the simpler world
of yesteryear combined with exciting
shopping, dining and recreation. The
brick Main Street is lined with 1900s-style
street lamps, trees and pristine
sidewalks, with ample free parking. It’s
all here—and it’s all walkable.
For those who prefer driving, there are
exciting treasures to unearth throughout
East Aurora and in the neighboring towns.
Although rich in historic significance,
the area provides exciting dining
experiences, from casual spots with the
feel of funky urban bistros to fine dining
restaurants with world-class gourmet
cuisine.
When not eating and drinking in one
of the many fine establishments, visitors
love the area’s fascinating and varied
shops and their selection of apparel,
accessories, gifts, décor, art and jewelry
you simply won’t find anywhere else.
The Greater East Aurora area beckons.
Come and see why so many people have
said that after visiting the East Aurora area,
they feel as if they are returning to their
own hometown.

Local Chefs Make Greater East Aurora a
DINING DESTINATION
If the number of restaurant
seats in greater East Aurora is
compared to the population,
you’d expect locals must be
dining out four times a day.
But the fact is the community
has developed a “destination
dining” reputation in recent
years.
Local chefs are constantly
balancing their menus with
traditional favorites and unique
creations that might be found in
New York City hot spots. Farm to
table is popular here as well, with
menu items created to match
what is in season at local farms.
At the Elm Street Bakery Chef
Brad Rowell’s menu includes a
wood-fired mac and cheese,
that ever-popular dish, or from
the wood-fired brick oven a
roasted ramp and olive pizza
with Parmesan, fresh ricotta and
nicoise olives.
Rick and Cathy Pohlman are
working owners of Rick’s on
Main where Rick and Executive
Chef Chris Gibney handle the
chef duties. It’s hard to name
one favorite, but at lunchtime
the famous soup trio with a half
sandwich is a popular choice.
At dinner, beef lovers will find
among several selections a
gorgonzola
crusted
prime
sirloin, while a wide variety of
non-beef entrees are offered as
well.
At the historic Roycroft Inn the
homegrown executive chef also
looks to the homegrown market
Chef Brad Rowell creates at the Elm Street Bakery
for additions to the menu. Chef
Andrew Nuernberger grew up
in East Aurora and the Inn menus
reflect his connection to local
producers. Organic Amishraised chicken or rack of lamb
seared with local herbs may
be on the seasonally changing
menu.
Perhaps the reason that East
Aurora has become a dining
destination is local chefs offer
menus that range from traditional
to trend-setting, from white
tablecloth to family friendly and
everything in between.
One of the newest additions
to the dining scene is 189 Public
House. This establishment calls
itself a “whiskey and music
emporium” and celebrates the
American heritage of bourbon
and rye whiskey, including small
batch American craft whiskey.
On the lunch menu diners
will find a ploughman’s lunch
and dinner features include a
traditional fried chicken dinner or
perhaps shrimp and grits. Next
door the same owners continue
a long-time restaurant, the BarBill, which is known for Buff alo
favorites chicken wings and beef
on weck.
Pasquale’s is a busy authentic
Italian restaurant that is popular
with couples and families. From
spaghetti to signature dishes
such eggplant strata and chicken
vincenza, the extensive menu
has something for everyone,
including pizza, gluten free pasta
and ravioli are also offered.
Tony Rome’s historic Globe
Hotel offers the opportunity to
dine in an 1824 stagecoach stop
where early settlers met to talk
things over. But it’s the famous
barbecued ribs that are the talk
of the town today. “The Globe,”
as it is known here, also features
a Western New York favorite,
the Friday Fish Fry, but with the
twist of being offered daily.
Family-friendly, the Globe has
a kid’s menu and special family
promotions.
Another historic building is
the former Pennsylvania Railroad
Station, now Riley Street Station
restaurant. Serving lunch and
dinner, the chef pays homage
to the railroading past with its
menu items such as Waybill Bean
and Red Pepper Salad and the
Railcar Reuben.
Taste of East Aurora bills itself
as “mid-town Manhattan meets
Main Street East Aurora” with
its coffee house atmosphere
and some unique menu items
along with popular coffees. For
breakfast, Tiramisu French toast
may be a decadent departure
from a healthy breakfast, but
Taste also offers yogurt, granola
and baked-fresh pastries as
well. Lunch and dinner features
sandwiches and salads with a
local flare.
These are just a few of the
restaurants awaiting visitors.
And behind each menu item is
a creative staff of chefs and line
cooks keeping up with current
dining trends as well as giving
special treatment to the “old
standards” everyone enjoys.

An Institution with a Lengthening Shadow
There’s no scientific basis to
say that the Roycroft enterprise
of 1895 tapped a well of creativity that continues to influence life
around East Aurora today. But
artistic and creative minds continue to thrive here. Whether
the many contemporary artists
and craftsmen directly inspired
by the Roycroft Arts and Crafts
center, or the toy designers
who work here, or the inventive
minds that helped put man on
the moon, some would suggest
there is a creative force here that
is otherwise hard to explain.
Roycroft founder Elbert Hubbard once said that every institution is the lengthening shadow
of one man. Perhaps it is the
spreading influence of the many
artists, craftsmen and writers
who were attracted to the Roycroft and inspired others – some
who stayed at the Roycroft and
others who left to pursue their
own shops here and elsewhere
– who provide that creative
spark today.
Today, the Roycroft Campus, the original buildings that
housed the shops, is gradually
being united again with the care
a National Landmark deserves.
The non-profit Roycroft Campus
Corporation has acquired and
begun restoration of one building, has historically reconstructed the Roycroft Power House
and is now in the process of purchasing the largest building, the

Print Shop. Working closely with
the Wendt Foundation, which
owns the restored Roycroft Inn
and recently took possession of
the Roycroft Chapel, the RCC is
committed to not only restoring
buildings in a historic setting,
but also to bring working craftsmen and programs to the campus as a contemporary arts and
education center.
The Roycroft is celebrated as
the birthplace of the American
Arts & Crafts movement and is
unique in that the buildings that
served the original Roycroft from
1895 to 1939 survive. Visitors
tour the campus for the historic
importance, but also come to
the many programs offered regularly by the RCC. One Roycroft
historian in the 1960’s perhaps
captured the reason that those
who are working to preserve
and restore the campus are
equally as interested in making
it a contemporary center for the
arts and education. He noted
that many communities proudly
announce that a famous person
“once slept here.” East Aurora,
he said, can boast that “Elbert
Hubbard was awake here.”
Author, philosopher, advertising genius, lecturer and
entrepreneur Elbert Hubbard
was a man well ahead of his
time in many ways, even as he
embraced the philosophy of
the arts & crafts movement.

ARTS MATTER HERE...
A Legacy Continued
Perhaps it’s the legacy of the
first Arts & Crafts community in the
United States, the Roycroft Shops,
and the many artists, writers, craftsmen and musicians that followed
founder Elbert Hubbard here. Perhaps it’s the influence of the many
creative toy designers who have
worked at Fisher-Price Toys. Whatever sparked the creativity, greater
East Aurora today continues a long
tradition of supporting the arts and
attracting artists, writers, musicians, craftsmen and actors to the
community.
The East Aurora Art Society has
celebrated its annual June outdoor art show for 60 years. This
“clothesline” show takes place on
the front lawn of the Main Street
school each year where more
than 80 artists hang their works on
snow fences or in pop-up booths
and vie for ribbons and sales.
Along with the major show,
members exhibit throughout the
year at nursing homes, the senior
center and have two additional
shows at the East Aurora Library.
Main Street becomes the canvas for the
Annual June Art Show & Sale.
The EA Art Society has its origins in the early 1900s with Merle
James, who was the director of
rotogravure for the Buffalo Courier-Express. The James family summered in Maine, and it was there
that their youngest daughter, Betsy, met and married aspiring artist
named Andrew Wyeth.

From its earliest days as the
“Paint & Varnish Club” to the present, the East Aurora Art Society
encourages its members with lectures, demonstrations and workshops.
Hubbard’s Roycroft also attracted noted artists of the early 1900’s,
as lecturers, visiting artists and artists in residence. Many stayed a
time, then moved on, leaving their
mark on the Roycroft and the community. Alexis Fournier was among
artists in residence here and his
work can be seen in murals at the
historic Roycroft Inn and at the
Elbert Hubbard Museum. W.W.
Denslow, a Roycroft artist, was
later better known as the illustrator
of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”.
Dard Hunter was noted for his designs for the Roycroft and became
famous for his paper-making.
A “well crafted weekend” and
periodic “gallery walks” add to the
artistic opportunities each year.
There’s no shortage of art galleries in the community today, with
Red Fish, Meibohm Fine Arts and
Art Shop, Norberg’s Gallery and
Framing, the Copper Shop Gallery and Will Faller Fine Arts among
them. They offer a wide selection
of original art from local to national
artists of the past and present.
Many contemporary craftsmen
also take inspiration from the Roycroft enterprise, becoming members of the Roycrofters-at-Large
Association. Those who reach a
level of quality recognized by a
jury of their peers are given the
right to use the Roycroft Renaissance “double R” mark on their
work. RALA sponsors an outdoor
show in June and an indoor show
in December. Many work locally
and a number show in the Roycroft
Copper Shop Gallery and other local galleries.
The early Roycroft was also noted for its many concerts held on
the campus, some with local talent
and others with well-know national
figures of the era. That tradition
continues today with the Annual
Roycroft Chamber Music Festival. The concerts take place two
weekends in June and the principal
goals of the festival are to help promote chamber music and enhance
the quality of life in Western New
York, by presenting a series of
world-class, but readily accessible
and easily affordable concerts in an
intimate and uplifting setting. Each
year, nationally and internationally
renowned musicians travel from
all over the United States to participate. The concerts are held in the
sanctuary of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in East Aurora, which
provides wonderful acoustics and
architectural splendor while maintaining an intimate atmosphere
consistent with the chamber music
genre. Interestingly, the stained
glass window of the church was
designed by the late Rixford Jennings, a founder of RALA and son
of an original Roycroft craftsman.
Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft Inn
featured a large salon where musical performances were held on a
planned schedule or at the spurof-the-moment when a musician
came to visit. Today, when the oversize oak door to the Inn swings
open, visitors may be greeted by
the sounds of a jazz band, a classical quartet or perhaps a local performer or group at the open mic on
“Acoustic Sunday.”
And the Roycroft is just one of
the restaurant venues featuring
music. On any given night, and especially on weekends, visitors may
find a folk singer at a coffee shop, a
rock band at a restaurant and bar, a
dixieland band at a historic tavern
or an Irish band at a pub.
And not all performances are
found inside. Several years ago,
when East Aurora’s Main Street
was being restored (with 400,000
individual red bricks) the East AuroContinued on Page 12

ra Advertiser thought folks needed
an incentive to put up with the dust
and construction. The newspaper
sponsored a rock band concert in
the parking lot behind Main Street,
and the now annual “Backyard
Bash” was born. The “Bash” is now
a concert series with support from
the town government and local
businesses and is held Thursday
evenings in July and August. It’s a
party atmosphere that’s grown to
include tailgate picnics and informal reunions. Summer outdoor
concerts are also held in Elma and
Marilla and the Absolut Care nursing home. They’re free. Just bring
your own chair and enjoy.
The big-screen Aurora Theatre
usually shows first-run movies with
its recently added digital projection system. But keep an eye on
the Main Street landmark neon
marquee for announcements of
occasional live performances. The
lobby features the original theater’s
1925 lobby murals, owned and restored by the Aurora Historical Society. They were painted by Margaret Evans Price, artist and book
illustrator and, coincidentally the
wife of Fisher-Price Toys founder
Irving Price. Mrs. Price is also credited with saving President Millard
Fillmore’s East Aurora home when
she purchased the deteriorating
building and moved it to its present location as her art studio. It is
now the Millard Fillmore Presidential Site operated by the Aurora
Historical Society.
From the big screen to the small
stage, many talented Western
New York residents become part
of Aurora Players productions. The
Players is one of the oldest community theater groups in New York
State and one of the few to have a
dedicated playhouse. It was nearly
80 years ago that a few residents
got together at local homes to
read plays. By 1935 the group
staged its first play in the high
school auditorium and continued
to perform in borrowed venues for
many years. In 1941, the group produced a summer play in the openair Roycroft Pavilion in Hamlin Park.
The Players continued to improve
the pavilion, closing it in, adding
space and otherwise making it
suitable for plays. The most recent
improvements included a new
lobby, ticket booth and restrooms,
backstage support and bringing
the building “up to code.”
While much improved for both
the audience and the actors, the
Roycroft Pavilion, transformed into
a playhouse, is an ideal intimate
setting for community theater.
The group typically stages three
productions a year and also offers a summer theater program for
youth, Project Stage.
Indoors, outdoors and all around
the towns of Greater East Aurora,
this is the place to celebrate the
arts.

FESTIVALS AND FUN...
...and You’re Invited!
Walking down East Aurora’s Main
Street on a particular Wednesday in
May, there’s an unmistakable aroma of a barbecue. When the wind
blows just right, it’s a reminder that
spring has arrived and it’s time to
shake off the winter and head to the
park for the annual Kiwanis Barbecue. It’s a local tradition, and you’re
invited. In fact it is just one of the numerous Greater East Aurora events,
fairs, festivals and fun activities that
welcome visitors.
On a Saturday in July it might be
an annual street festival where merchants put their best bargains out
and local dance troupes strut their
stuff on East Aurora’s brick Main
Street. Antique car shows, you’ll
find them in East Aurora, Elma,
Marilla and Colden, not to mention
“cruise nights” in various locations.
If it’s an earlier form of transportation that catches your fancy, The
East Aurora Driving Society’s annual Carriage Drive and Competition in July celebrates the time when
East Aurora was known as the “trot-
ting capital of the world.”
Music is in the air much of the
summer season with outdoor concerts in East Aurora, Elma and Marilla. East Aurora’s “Backyard Bash”
on Thursday nights in July and August transforms a village parking lot
into an impromptu street party.
In the arts area, the East Aurora
Art Society and the Roycrofters-atLarge both have outdoor shows,
and the Colden Art Festival combines art and the beauty of the fall
season.
Community events always offer a
slice of small-town Americana. The
Marilla Firemen’s Carnival packs the
hamlet with people in a traditional
carnival atmosphere while the Holland Tulip Festival has carnival rides,
a parade on Main St. and the crowning of a festival queen, among other
events. Independence Day in East
Aurora is celebrated with an “anybody can join in parade” from uptown to Hamlin Park for concerts,
entertainment and a close-up
fireworks show. Elma has its com-

munity days and Waldfest in Wales
attracts thousands for a Germaninspired party in the woods.
Craft fairs, quilt shows, church
picnics and bazaars. They’re all
there in abundance in East Aurora
and Beyond. Throw in numerous
barbecues and dinners sponsored
by a variety of community organizations, and there’s no reason to wonder what to do!

With it’s space-age employers the Greater East Aurora area is firmly in the present. But that doesn’t mean the past isn’t
celebrated here. Through the work of local residents, an entire group of Arts & Crafts buildings as well as the President
Millard Fillmore house have been designated National Landmarks. Volunteers
organized and staff museums related to those Landmark buildings. However, its
not just the national and internationally known landmarks that offer an insight to
community history.
The Elma Historical Society operates a local history museum and recently re-created an operating saw mill. Marilla’s past is remembered in a town museum, also operated by that community’s historical society. And in Marilla’s long-time country store, a mini-museum shows off the
merchandise the store sold decades ago.
East Aurora’s “horse era” once boasted the “world’s most handsome horse” and a unique
one-mile covered race track. That era is remembered with an annual event, and historic markers.

Greater East Aurora has unique
connections to the Civil War and
slavery with a local church with an
early anti-slavery heritage and the
early home of President Millard
Fillmore, who signed the Great
Compromise of 1850. The church
and the Millard Fillmore House
Museum are on the list of places
to visit for those interested in that
period of American history.
In nearby Griffins Mills, a hamlet a few miles from the Village of
East Aurora, is the Griffins Mills
Presbyterian Church. Members
beleive their congregation once
helped fugitive slaves escape
to Canada as part of the Underground Railroad. Many of the
early church members were abolitionists, and in 1846 the congregation presented resolutions
denouncing slavery, one of the
first area churches to do so. The
Liberty Party, which advocated
for Abolition in the early 1840s,
is said to have had its earliest beginnings inside the church’s hall.

Fillmore, who was vice president, became president upon
the death of Zachary Taylor,

but signed the Compromise in an
attempt to avoid civil war.

TOWN OF
COLDEN
TOWN OF
AURORA
VILLAGE OF
EAST AURORA
www.townofaurora.com
www.east-aurora.ny.us
The Town of Aurora was founded in 1818,
fourteen years after the first settler Jabez Warren
obtained a contract from the Holland Land
Company for 1,443 acres and made it his family’s
home in 1804. Previously Native Americans lived
in the area. The town is 36 square miles with a
current population of approximately 14,000, which
includes the Village of East Aurora, the hamlets of
Jewettville, Griffins Mills, West Falls and a portion
of South Wales.
One of the town’s earliest and most prominent
settlers was a young Millard Fillmore, who came
to Aurora in the early 1820’s to open the first law
practice in town and build a home for his future
wife Abigail. Twenty-seven years later, Millard
Fillmore became President of the United States.
The President’s home was moved twice: from its
original location on Main Street to Millard Fillmore
Place, and then in 1930 to its current location on
Shearer Avenue. Today it is a National Historic
Landmark and the only standing home built by a
United States president.
With the Hamlin and Jewett Farms, the latter of
which included the world’s only mile-long indoor
racetrack off Grover Road, Aurora became known
as the horse-racing capital of the world in the late
1800’s.
The Village of East Aurora, founded 1804 and
incorporated 1874, has a rich history that remains
an integral part of its present-day character.
Located just 25 miles from downtown Buffalo and
45 minutes from Niagara Falls, East Aurora has
been home to interesting individuals, including
U.S. President Millard Fillmore and Elbert
Hubbard, the Roycroft Arts & Crafts movement
and international companies, such as FisherPrice Toys.
A walk down East Aurora’s bustling Main Street is,
in some ways, a step back in time with a variety of
specialty shops, restaurants, churches, municipal
buildings and carefully preserved homes. Local
museums and national historic sites provide
direct links to East Aurora’s dynamic past.
Fillmore, the nation’s 13th president, built the
Millard Fillmore House on Shearer Avenue when
he was a country lawyer in East Aurora. The
Elbert Hubbard Museum on Oakwood Avenue
features an extensive collection of Roycroft
books and Arts & Crafts pieces. The birthplace
of Fisher-Price Toys, East Aurora is a community
that is passionate about children. FisherPrice’s international headquarters are located
on Girard Avenue in the Village. A local nonprofit organization operates Explore & More...a
children’s museum.

TOWN OF
HOLLAND
www.townofcolden.com
www.erie.gov/holland
Colden was founded by Richard Buffum. He left
Rhode Island with his children and some others
to move west in order to find a new home. They
carried everything in an ox cart, and some of
the possessions they took with them are still in
existence today. They settled in what is present
day Colden. Buffum purchased 2,000 acres of
land from the Holland Purchase Company.
On April 2, 1828, the town was organized. It
contained 22,704 acres and Silas Lewis was
the first supervisor. The first post office was
established in 1830 in Leander J. Robert’s
house and was called Colden after Cadwalder
D. Colden, who was a State Senator. Three
years later, it was moved to Buffum’s Mills, and
Buffum became postmaster. The post office kept
the name Colden, and gradually, the settlement
accepted the name.
Buffum and James Bloomfield, a hired hand, built
a grist mill, and the settlement there was then
known as Buffum’s Mills. The mill was rebuilt
twice and moved once. The first school was
taught by Mary Eddy. Buffum and others then
built houses farther away and built a road leading
to them.
Established in 1818, the Town of Holland (pop.
3,612) is a rural and residential community in the
center of the eastern edge of Erie County, NY.
Holland prides itself on its charming, small-town
atmosphere, its fine school system, and its rural
friendliness. The town also offers several shops,
offices, eateries, and a NASCAR racetrack. It is
also home to the annual “Tulip Festival” held each
May since 1956.
TOWN OF ELMA
www.elmanewyork.com
The Town of Elma, incorporated in April 1857,
was split from the Towns of Aurora and Lancaster.
Encompassing 36 square miles with two major
waterways, the Buffalo Creek and Cazenovia
Creek, Elma sits squarely in the center of Erie
County and can safely call itself the Heart of Erie
County. Over 11,317 residents call Elma home,
as does Iroquois Central School, one of Western
New York’s top rated school systems, and Elma
Meadows Golf Course, one of Erie County’s top
public courses. Residents enjoy spending time
with their family and friends at two of Elma’s
parks, the Elma Village Green and Creek Road
Park. There are also athletic fields, a Senior
Center, Town Museum, and Public Library.
Elma has a vibrant business community anchored
by large firms like Moog, Steuben Foods, and
Servotronics. Its heart is a retail plaza in the
center of Town, several restaurants scattered
throughout the Town, and many small businesses
that provide residents with a multitude of services.
While farming has been the backbone of
agriculture, horse farms are becoming more
prevalent. Nurseries and greenhouse operations
also provide great greenery and color, they also
provide the stock for several larger nurseries in
the area.
TOWN OF
MARILLA
www.erie.gov/marilla
The Town of Marilla is situated on the eastern
edge of Erie County, New York, bordered by the
Towns of Alden, Wales, Elma, Lancaster and
Bennington (in Wyoming County). The town was
named after Mrs. Marilla Rogers, an early resident
who was a highly-regarded local schoolteacher.
Prior to 1826, Marilla was part of the Buffalo
Creek Indian Reservation. It became an official
township in 1854. Its good soils, rolling terrain
and open space make Marilla an ideal place to
live and work. Although largely agricultural and
rural in the past, Marilla has slowly become more
urbanized as a result of shifting demographics.
Agriculture and farming, however, are still very
vibrant within the town. The population of Marilla
is now about 5,700.
Marilla boasts of four churches, one restaurant,
two taverns, one country store, a town park, a
primary school, a historical museum, a pavilion in
the center of town and a library.
During the summer, the town has a large Fireman’s
Carnival, which is an important social and fundraising event in Marilla. The carnival provides
entertainment for young and old, especially those
who come from the surrounding area to take part
and enjoy the festivities. The renowned Fireman’s
Parade is especially noteworthy. They also have
Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parades that are
well attended. Also, don’t miss the huge annual
Marilla car show held the 4th weekend in July.
TOWN OF WALES
www.townofwales.com
The first settlers to stay came into Wales in
1804. They were descendants of Ethan Allen, a
Revolutionary War hero. The next year, Jacob
Turner, from Sheldon, settled nearby. Each
year after this, a few more pioneers braved the
wilderness and made homes for their families in
the town.
Wales is one of the earliest of the towns of Erie
County. It was formed from Willink by State Law
on April 15, 1818, while Erie County was still a
part of Niagara County. As time went on, this huge
town was divided into several smaller townships
until Willink was left with only approximately 100
square miles. This now comprises the towns of
Wales, Aurora, and Holland.
In 1818, one of the towns so separated was the
Town of Wales. The area, so named because its
hills and green fields seemed to resemble the
Wales of Britain, was an agricultural and dairying
area.
