Holt County Relay For Life
Small in numbers - Great in spirit
Local businesswoman and Big Lake Improvement Association (BLIA) member, Steph Miller-McCann - Added a little humor to the car and motorcycle (bike) show at
the Big Lake Lakefest on Saturday, June 4. She won a special prize for “pedalling the farthest” and received at least
one People’s Choice Award vote. Steph, owner and broker
of Miller Realty, had a fun time showing off her wheels.
Vicki Kurtz, left, and Yvonne Markt, right, of Oregon, MO
- Walk arm-in-arm while taking a lap around the courthouse
square during the Holt County Relay For Life event on Saturday,
June 4, at Oregon, MO. Vicki is a cancer survivor and Yvonne was
there in support of Vicki and other survivors and victims of cancer. The number of participants was down this year, but the goal
of raising $10,000 has almost been reached, with $8,271.35 collected so far. Shyann Ray, the coordinator of the event, states
that 100 canned food items were also collected for the food
banks in Mound City and Oregon.

Mound City Mausoleum’s
fate up in the air; options to
be presented to county court
For years, the mausoleum at the entrance to
Mount Hope Cemetery in Mound City has been
neglected. The need for a new roof and ceiling
tiles is desperate. The Holt County Court is looking for options concerning the fate of the mausoleum.
Steps are being taken to determine if it would be
affordable to move the entombed caskets to plots
in the cemetery. This would only occur if the descendants of the entombed or living owners of a
crypt agree. “There must be 100% of the parties in
agreement in order for the court to even consider
this option,” stated the county commissioners.
Expenses for this solution would include opening the crypts, removal of the caskets, purchase
of underground vaults and purchase of a plot for
each of the entombed. The mausoleum would then
be demolished and the lot leveled. The area would
then be donated to the Mount Hope Cemetery.
All of these expenses are estimated to be between
$20,000 and $30,000. These expenses would be
incurred by the county.
The other option is to replace the roof and ceiling tiles, clean the interior and install new doors
to the mausoleum. An A-frame roof would be
needed to prevent the current problem with the
flat roof holding water. An estimate of a metal Aframe roof is $15,000-$16,000. The other expenses would be a new ceiling and bronze doors (or
repair the existing doors). The mausoleum should
also be inspected and resealed, a maintenance that
should be done every 45-50 years.
The Mound City Mausoleum was built in 1957
by Terry Noah, a native of New Point, MO. He
also built the Oregon, MO, mausoleum and the
Maitland, MO, mausoleum in or around 1957. The
mausoleums were then deeded to the county. Each
mausoleum was left with a small maintenance
fund. Only the interest from that fund can be used
for maintaining the buildings. Several years ago,
the roof on the Oregon mausoleum was replaced
with private funds.
The Holt County commissioners are searching
for the best solution to the dilemma of the Mound
City Mausoleum. Whether refurbishing or eliminating the building is the solution, the commissioners will need to find the funds in the county’s
budget to take care of the problem.
The vaults in the Mound City Mausoleum - Have remained fairly
unscathed from the extreme deterioration of the structure’s roof
over of the years. Granite and marble are very durable with minimum maintenance if the roof keeps out the elements.
Much of the ceiling in the Mound City Mausoleum - Has fallen
onto the tiled floors below due to a deteriorated roof, left unattended for years, that has allowed rainwater to damage the ceiling. The marble plates at each burial chamber are unharmed.
(LEFT)
The Mound City Mausoleum, built in 1957 - Sits majestically at
the entrance of Mount Hope Cemetery at Mound City. The granite
building has withstood nearly 60 years of weather; however, the
deteriorating flat roof has had damaging effects on the inside of
the building over the years.

Tiffany Heights in Mound
City and Oregon Care Center
in Oregon, MO, have been recognized as 2016 recipients of
the Bronze - Commitment to
Quality Award for their dedication to improving the lives
of residents through quality
care. The award is the first
of three distinctions possible
through the National Quality Award Program, presented
by the American Health Care
Association and National
Center for Assisted Living
(AHCA/NCAL), the leading
association for long-term and
post-acute care. The program
honors providers across the
nation that have demonstrated
their commitment to improving quality of care for seniors
and persons with disabilities.
“It’s an honor for the staff
at both facilities to be recognized for their hard work and
quality of care their teams
provide every day,” said Kris
Gibson, Vice President Business Development, Tiffany
Care Centers. “Tiffany Care
Centers has been committed to providing high-quality,

Kristine added that McLarney

Implemented by AHCA/
NCAL in 1996, the National
Quality Award Program is centered on the core values and
criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program,
which is the foundation of the
metric-based
AHCA/NCAL
Quality Initiative. The program
assists providers of long-term
and post-acute care services in
achieving their performance excellence goals.
The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
Providers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze
level, where they develop an organizational profile with essen-
tial performance elements such
as vision and mission statements
and an assessment of customers’
expectations. Bronze applicants
must also demonstrate their ability to implement a performance
improvement system. Trained
examiners review each Bronze
application to determine if the
center has met the demands of
the criteria. As a recipient of the
Bronze - Commitment to Quality Award, Tiffany Heights and
Oregon Care Center may now
move forward in developing
approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the
criteria required for the Silver Achievement in Quality Award.
“I applaud the women and men
of Tiffany Heights and Oregon
Care Center for their commitment to improve quality care,”
said the AHCA/NCAL National
Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair, Christine Boldt.
“This award is the first step in a
program that serves as an essential guide to performance excellence. I encourage both organizations to continue their quality
journey.”
The awards will be presented
during AHCA/NCAL’s 67th Annual Convention and Exposition
in Nashville, TN, October 16-19,
2016.

there were still a few to observe.
The outing group enjoyed a tour
and informative guide. Residents
are looking forward to next year
and, hopefully, seeing all the
gorge ous flowers in full bloom.

Rumble By The Refuge
Margaret Fuhrman
Charles H. Milby
Margaret
Elizabeth
(Pilkington)
Fuhrman arrived in this world on May
30, 1963, the only child and "princess" to
parents, Willodean L. (King) and Omer
Pilkington. They lived in Forest City, MO.
Margaret graduated from South Holt High
School in Oregon, MO, in 1981.
On September 10, 2011, Margaret was
united in marriage to Chris A. Fuhrman
at the Rock Port, MO, United Methodist
Church by Pastor Bruce Jeffries. The entire ceremony was lovingly
put together by their closest friends who even picked the date deliberately (9-10-11) so Chris could remember - and he always did! The
bond between Chris and Margaret was forged almost 20 years ago
by a chance meeting at a church auction in Mound City. Margaret passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016, less than a day after her 53rd birthday. A celebration of life memorial service for Margaret will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at the United
Methodist Church in Rock Port. The service will be conducted by
Reverend Bruce Jeffries. A private family inurnment will be held at
a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mound City. The family will
receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; Aunt Julia Pilkington; and Uncle Grover Pilkington. Survivors include her husband, Chris, of Rock Port; sister-in-law, Marlene, of Paso Robles,
CA; "mom and dad", Janice and Ralph Phelps; and an amazing host
of dear friends across several counties.
Margaret was always genuinely interested in the people in her
communities, both past and present, and attended numerous life
events of countless individuals, from birthdays and graduations to
funerals, and attended most school functions. She was 'everywhere'
checking on folks and their families as well as volunteering tirelessly, while being an exceptional caregiver and loving companion
to her husband, Chris. Her unique expressions and smile can be
summed up as she was "quite a Margaret".
Margaret was a member of the Rock Port United Methodist
Church and sang in the chancel choir. She was secretary of the
United Methodist Women’s Unit of the Rock Port United Methodist
Church. She loved music, both hymns and country, and also expressed herself in baking, a variety of crafts, and applying brilliant
combinations of colors in adult coloring books. While the mountain
of books in her home attests to her love of reading, and the outpouring of love attests to the dedicated relationships she forged, her priority was always the Lord, in whose care she now resides.
Memorials may be directed to the Margaret E. Fuhrman Memorial Fund. Services are under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel
of Rock Port. An online obituary and condolences may be found at
www.minterfuneralchapels.com.
Charles H. Milby was born on November 30, 1933, in Greene County,
KY. He was one of nine children of William Melvin and Bettie Ermine (Price)
Milby. On February 6, 1954, he married
Geneva A. Skaggs, and they became
parents of four children.
Charles passed away on Tuesday,
May 31, 2016, at a Mound City care
center at the age of 82. Preceding him
in death were his wife; parents; and his
siblings, Kenneth, James, William and Welby Milby, Inez Baumgardner, Wyanetta DeSpain, Betty Milby, and Zelda Mae Lobb.
Survivors include Charles’ children, sons, Larry (Kellie) Milby
of Downs, IL, Ronnie (Barbie) Milby of Bloomington, IL, and
Donnie (Natalie) Milby of Rockford, IL, and daughter, Jeanette
“Jan” (Stan) Seitz, Mound City; 12 grandchildren, Luke Milby,
Jacob (Kendall) Milby, Andrea Milby, Danielle (Judd) Ankrom,
Mitchell Milby, April (Jessie) McGaughy, Casey (Tiffany) Seitz,
Kelley (Airon) Seitz, Kristin (Brad) Meyer, Keri (Tyler) Johnson,
Stephanie (Jacob) Hall, and Nicole Braun; nine great-grandchildren, Abby and Maggie Ankrom, Jaxon and Hudson McGaughy,
Marshall Milby, and Carsten, Owen, Kai and Koa Seitz; and nieces and nephews.
Charles was a loving husband and father, and provided well for
his family as a farmer in Illinois all his life. He was a member of
Calvary Baptist Church and loved teasing his pastor, joking with
his friends, and spending time with his friends and church family. Charles knew Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior and was
ready to walk with him.
Services are being held on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at 10 a.m.
at the Calvary Baptist Church in Normal, IL. Family members are
greeting friends one hour prior to services. Interment will be held
at Friends Cemetery in Bentown, IL. Memorials may be directed
to Friends Cemetery. Care was entrusted to Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City, and Calvert & Metzler Funeral Home,
Bloomington, IL. Online condolences may be left at www.cham
berlainfuneral.com.

FORTESCUE 8TH GRADE GRADUATES 1952
Ralph Eddie Bradbury, Casper, WY, brought this photo to
the Fortescue School Reunion to share. It was the year of the
1952 flood and school was dismissed when families had to
move in early April. Eddie reminded everyone that when the
water went down and everyone returned home there were no
more classes, but the 8th grade graduation was held. Left to
right, front row: Elizabeth Ann Jones (Burnsides), Joyce Ann
Butcher (Hall), Rosemary Henry (Stewart), Patty Lou Hinkle

Back row: Ralph Eddie Bradbury and Rex Bradbury. Only
four now survive.
RECENT DONATIONS TO THE CENTER
* “The History of Christopher Columbus Akin in Holt County, Missouri, His Life and Times as Told in Holt County
Newspapers” was sent to the Genealogy and Research Center recently by his grandson, Paul Akin, Shawnee, KS. He writes
that in 2014 he visited the Holt County Historical Society Genealogy and Research Center and researched this story and
wanted it available to Holt County residents as part of the county history. * Fortescue school photos came from graduates Carl “Sonny” (1948) and Darlene Elder Adkinson (1949), Galva, IL.
She writes that she and David Winslow are the only ones left from the last graduating class of Fortescue High School.
* Large photos of early day Corning were received from Jo Ann Hatten, a 1951 Craig graduate. Several show floodwaters and also the large brick buildings that were once on Corning’s streets. They have been framed and are now on display
in the center.

• The heat probably held down the size of the
crowds at the 3rd annual Big Lake Arts and
Crafts Fair over the weekend. The turnout of
both vendors and visitors for the two-day affair sponsored by the Mound City Chamber of
Commerce was disappointing, chamber members said, and it was questionable whether there
would be a 4th annual version of the event.

ended with a program at the First Christian
Church. There were 67 children who attended,
said Joyce Pecora, superintendent.

the prior weekend at the Mound City rodeo
grounds raised close to the $10,000 goal, said
Karen Cotton, chairman.

founded in 1868, but she had been there a long

memories at a Holt County Historical Society
meeting at the society’s Methodist Church in
Fortescue.

BIG LAKE LAKEFEST
big lake lakefest
The Big Lake Lakefest added a car and motorcycle show - To the festivities on Saturday, June 4.
One unique car at the show was a Henry J from the early 1950’s. Henry J. Kaiser set out to make an
affordable car for the average buyer, with a goal of not exceeding a selling price of $1,300 ($12,786 in
2016 US dollars). To keep costs low, early Henry Js did not have rear trunk lids; owners had to access
the trunk by folding down the rear seat. Another cost-saving measure was to offer the car only as a
two-door sedan with fixed rear windows. Also lacking in the basic version were glove compartment,
armrests, and passenger-side inside sun visor. Because of low sales, in 1952, Kaiser began selling
rebadged Henry Js through Sears and Roebuck, under the nameplate of Allstate. Allstates carried
a unique grille, hood ornament, hubcaps, identification badges and interior trim. After two years of
disappointing sales, Sears dropped the car.

Ashlyn accompanies her grandpa to most of the car shows. The Jacksons are huge Nebraska
Cornhusker fans as everyone could tell.

To kick off the summer, the
Craig, MO, FFA officers for the
2016-2017 school year attended
the Learn-Educate-AdvanceDevelop (LEAD) Conference
in Trenton, MO, on Wednesday,
June 1. Shortly after arrival, the
conference began with an exercise to get to know one another
better. After a few speeches and
a couple more group exercises,
the first session began.
The first session consisted
of creating a code of conduct
and how the officer team would
treat certain scenarios that conflict with the rules. A short time
was allotted for a break; then
on to session two. This session
dealt with sending the wrong
messages. After an activity,
the officers worked together
to complete three inaccurate
messages about agriculture or
FFA and an accurate alternative
message along with how they
planned on showing the community the accurate message.
Session three was all about
the Program of Activities
(POA). The officers learned
new facts about the POA and
how to incorporate these into
the chapter. Soon after a lunch
of either hot dogs or hamburgers, the break-out sessions began. The officer team split up
and visited three out of the five
sessions. Some things learned
in the breakout sessions were
event planning, exploring careers, or service leadership.
A closing session took place
afterwards ending the LEAD
Conference.
South Holt FFA officers attended the LEAD Conference - In

in Trenton, MO, on Wednesday, June 1. This conference is
designed specifically with FFA
officers in mind.
Led by past state officers, the
one day event allows the chapter officers the opportunity to
begin planning for their busy
year, while providing insightful
assistance from those who have
served at the state level. Officers developed a code of conduct, evaluated the Program of
Activities, and attended breakout sessions to learn how to effectively run a meeting.
Attending from South Holt
were Hunter Logan, President;
Brianna Justice, Sentinel; Kassidy Miller, Historian; and Sophie Richards, Reporter. Jessica Aeschliman serves as South

YOUTH
Theater camp ends with production of “The Apple”
The State Theater Arts Council sponsored a two-week theater camp at the State Theater
in Mound City from Monday,
May 23, through Friday, June 3.
“Ten campers came to the theater ready to learn and have a fun
time,” said Ginny Smith, Fairfax, MO, the camp director.
On Friday, June 3, the theater
camp presented the one-act play,
“The Apple” by Jimmy Brunelle,
for families and friends. The
scene opens with the jani.....custodial engineer (Blade Wright of
Mound City) making his rounds
in the art gallery. As he sweeps
the floors, he dreams of being famous someday. As he was about
to eat an apple, he was interrupted by an anxious, nerdy young
man (Oliver Smith of Fairfax,
MO) in a desperate search for a
pen. Setting his apple down on
a nearby pedestal, the custodial
engineer leaves the room to help
the young man find a pen.
Throughout the hilarious
scene, people see “the apple” in
all its glory, deeming it a work
of art. Each character demonstrates a unique attitude about
“the apple,” with the mysterious
woman with the pancake spatula
(Sophie Richards of Oregon,
MO) stealing the show. A rein-
carnation of Elvis Presley (Britney Wright of Mound City) and
little miss know-it-all with the
never-ending talking (Courteney
Gordon of Mound City) added to
the laughter, both in the audience
and on stage. The remainder of
the cast complemented the scene
with great lines and wonderful
acting.
After the art galley empties,
the custodial engineer returns,
unaware that his afternoon snack
had created such a fervent scene.
Before the closing of the curtain,
he picks up his apple, repeats his
wish to be famous someday and
walks off the stage.
Ms. Smith did a great job
teaching the campers about the
many facets of stage performing.
The performers spoke clearly
and reacted well to others on
stage. The audience could tell
this group of campers had a fun
time during camp.
Other members of the camp
were Maddie Dulcan (Oregon),
Faith Schwebach (Maitland,
MO), Charlie Smith (Fairfax),
Lydia Markt (Oregon) and Trisha Murphy (Big Lake, MO).
The State Theater Arts Council is looking forward to next
year’s camp.

an apple set the scene for the 30 minute play.

Summer reading program off to great start
The Mound City Public Library kicked off its summer reading program, “Going for the
Gold” - With guest performer, Will Stuck, at the Mound City State Theater on Tuesday, May 31.
The popular storyteller, pictured on stage, brought back to Mound City by popular demand,
kept the 82 children and adults enthralled with his stories and got the crowd in on the action. After the program at the theater, everyone went to the library to check out books and
sign up for reading logs. Summer reading program director, Susan Nauman, was thrilled with
the turnout, counting 46 pre-kindergarten through third grade readers, 11 fourth grade and
up readers and 25 adults at the opening event. Each Tuesday morning through July 12, the
summer reading program will hold great activities for the children at the library. Awards and
prizes will be handed out on Tuesday, July 19, at the State Theater for the program’s closing
ceremony. Watch the Mound City News for the weekly schedule.

“They kept me educated.
As a teacher,
that was helpful.”
Cindy Sons, a preschool director, had been living with constant
knee pain and was unable to get up and down with the kids.
When it became time for knee replacement surgery, she knew
just where to go – SSM Health St. Francis Hospital.
“The doctor did a great job explaining things to me,” she says,
“And the nurses talked me through what was going to happen,
like teachers.”
The results were everything Cindy had hoped for. So much so, she
recently had her other knee replaced. As she puts it, “I was confident
this group of people would take excellent care of me again.”

Relay for Life event on Saturday,
June 4, at Oregon, MO. Oregon
residents, Byron and Dana Fink,

married 50 years doesn’t make

After a close battle to end, the
Fink couple pulled out a victory.
