On behalf of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Festival board
of directors and staff, I would like to welcome you to Auburn!
As Indiana celebrates its bicentennial this year, we are also
highlighting a special year: our 60th anniversary! We are honored
you have chosen to celebrate our diamond anniversary with us.
The many activities planned throughout festival week will be sure
to educate, energize and entertain you and your family. Check out
our schedule of events on page 54 for specific times and dates…
our calendar is loaded this year!
Back in 1956, Auburn businessman Delmar Johnson welcomed
back to Auburn a returning group of car enthusiasts who formed
the ACD Club the previous year. These proud Auburn, Cord and
Duesenberg owners wanted to bring their cars back to Auburn and Johnson had the foresight to turn this reunion
into a community-wide celebration, thus the ACD Festival was born. Read about those early days in this publication
as Johnson’s wife Doris recalls the festival’s inception in her interview with All Things Auburn on page 36.
Thanks to Delmar Johnson and the efforts of thousands of volunteers over the past 60 years, the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Festival is one of the longest running community festivals in the state. We thank our many civic

Welcome! It is with a great amount of pride that I invite you to
our wonderful city for the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival. As a
visitor or a citizen, you’ll enjoy the amenities Auburn has to offer.
The ACD Festival Committee has planned many activities for our
visitors and residents.
Our rich automobile history has provided the City of Auburn
with beautiful historic homes and automotive museums. The
World’s Largest Collector Car Auctions, the popular Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Automobile Museum, and the National Automotive
and Truck Museum have provided a home to the famous
Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival and its numerous events held
throughout the city and the Auburn Auction Park each Labor
Day weekend.
The Auburn Arts Commission invites all to view the “Sculptures on the Square: The Magic of Metal” art
display on the City Square. The 15 sculptures honor the importance of metal in the history of DeKalb County
and Indiana during Indiana’s bicentennial year. Don’t forget to visit the Annual Arts & Craft Show Sunday on the
Courthouse Square.

On behalf of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club, I would like to welcome you
to the city of Auburn, the “Home of the Classics.” Our club, founded in 1952,
is focused on the restoration and preservation of original Auburn, Cord and
Duesenberg automobiles. We will celebrate our 61st Annual Reunion here during
this Labor Day weekend.
Each year, the ACD Club selects a “year of” automobile and, for 2016, it’s the
Year of the Closed Auburn.
We are expecting a large number of Closed Auburns made during 1912 to 1936.
On Friday, the Closed Auburn Lunch Tour ACD cars will be lining up in front
of the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum around 11 a.m. You will
not want to miss this great lineup of these magnificent automobiles. The tour
route will take us on the same roads used by the Auburn Automobile Company’s
southern factory test route.
All Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg cars registered for our Annual Reunion will
be displayed at Eckhart Park on Saturday and the public is welcome to purchase
entry at the Park.
Please enjoy all that the city of Auburn, the festival committee, the National
Automotive & Truck Museum, the ACD Automobile Museum and the ACD
Club have to offer you. We hope that you will return year after year as our club
members have for the past 61 years.

The Auburn Automobile Company produced
some of the most innovative and visually stunning
automobiles of the 1920s and 1930s, from the
flashy boattail speedsters to the convertibles that
were centerpieces of the company. However, the
closed automobiles accounted for the majority of
automobile production.
The first known closed body that Auburn Automobile
Company built was in 1912. This particular Auburn, as
seen on the 2016 ACD Festival poster and the cover of
All Things Auburn, was used to showcase the upcoming
line of automobiles for 1913. It was displayed at the 1912
Boston Auto Show and was referred to by advertisers as
“The Car of Tomorrow.” A brand new closed sedan body
style cost $2,500 in 1913.

In an effort to appeal to a consumer base that
desired closed body automobiles, the company
focused production on the closed Auburns, which
were considered to be “daily drivers.” The sedan and
brougham body styles accounted for most of the closed
bodies. Production records from the late 1920s and
1930s show that the sedan and brougham body styles
accounted for about 65 percent of the total production of
Auburns on average. Sedans and broughams were mid to
high priced body styles. For example, in 1928, an Auburn
sedan and speedster were both priced at $2,195.

What are the advantages to a closed body style? The
greatest advantage is protection from the elements.
Closed cars could be driven year-round and in all
weather. With a closed car, there was no hassle of
raising and lowering the top in response to the weather.
Closed bodies also provided more safety than an open
car, with the wood frame unit surrounding the driver
and passengers.
Oftentimes, the most rare and unique automobiles
are the most celebrated. The celebration of the
closed Auburn in 2016 places attention on the
common Auburn, an automobile that reflects

Duesenberg Automobile Museum
In the very early days of automobile manufacturing,
most companies offered cars in two basic body styles:
roadster and touring car. Both styles were “open cars,”
meaning that the only protection offered from the
weather was a thin fabric removable top and snapon side curtains. In a quest for more comfortable
accommodations for the driver and passengers, many
automobile manufacturers around 1912 to 1915 began
to offer closed cars with permanent non-removable tops
and glass windows.
The Auburn Automobile Company was quick to react
to the closed car trend and in late 1912 built a special
sedan called “The Car of Tomorrow” for the Boston Auto
Show. The concept was used for the company’s 1913

by the Rutenber Motor Company of Marion, Indiana. It
has a 4.5-inch bore and five-inch stroke for 318 cubicinches. When it was first released, the Auburn Model 40

2016 Grand Marshal of the ACD Festival
This year’s grand marshal is Auburn artist, John Souder.
Souder has volunteered his time and talents to create the world
famous posters for the festival since 1981. John spent his career
as a commercial artist doing graphic design, set design and even
using his skills as an artist in the military. Since retiring several
years ago, Souder has continued to support the ACD Festival with
his art and volunteers his time to create the festival’s collectible
memorabilia including t-shirts, lapel pins, bumper stickers and
more. Please join us in thanking and recognizing Souder for his

Few love their craft enough to
offer their services for free year
after year, but that is exactly what
skilled local artist John Souder does.
For the past 36 years, Souder has
been the sole artist behind the world
famous Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Festival posters, and he has never
requested payment for his work.
He calls himself “just a volunteer
for the festival,” but festival-goers
around the world know that he is far
more than that; he is a special gift to
the festival.
All of his art was done by hand
until he turned 50; that was when he
opted to incorporate computer-aided
elements into his design process.
The original poster was entirely silk
screened and was pulled together
from drawings from the museum
archives. He used nothing more than
old engineering prints, a dark room
and his design talents to produce the
first piece of festival memorabilia.
Today, Souder’s work is known
around the world and hangs in
prestigious garages across the
country (Jay Leno’s being one of the
most noteworthy).

A SMOOTH ROAD TO
ORTHOPEDIC CARE
A local resident, originally from New York,
says choosing DeKalb Health for orthopedics was the right way to go.

Barbara Pietracatella and her
husband, Vincent, were both born
and raised in Staten Island, New
York. They like cars and 25 years
ago made a trip to the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Festival with a couple
of friends.
Over the years, they became more
and more attached to the DeKalb
county community and bought a
home in Auburn. Five years ago,
both Barbara and Vincent retired
and relocated to their now full-time
home in northern Indiana. Last
year, Barbara started having trouble
with her left knee and found out she
needed to have a knee replacement.
“We were at the parade and saw a
1935 Auburn that looked just like my
father-in-law’s car that we had dated
in 58 years ago,” says Pietracatella.
“We did some searching and
eventually bought a yellow 1935
Auburn 851 Cabriolet. We took it
back to New York, but returned with
it every year for the festival. We just

surgery done here because I wanted
to be close to home. I didn’t want to
have to travel out east. My stay at
DeKalb Health was fantastic. They
just take such good care of you there
and treat you like you are one of their
own family members.”

The surgery was performed on July
29, 2015. After that, Pietracatella
needed to undergo physical therapy
at the hospital.
“I explained to Dr. Hanna and the
therapist that I drive the Auburn
in the parade every year and that I
would have to be ready to do that in
30 days. I needed my left leg to push
the clutch. I told them I was willing
to work hard to make that happen.
They were both a little skeptical and
said that would be an awful lot to get
done in a short amount of time, but
they agreed to work with me on it. I
did it. I drove that car in the parade
30 days following my surgery and
I didn’t have any problems at all.
One year later, I still don’t have any
problems with that knee.”

Looking back, Pietracatella says

“I don’t know if it would have been
as easy-going at a New York hospital
compared to DeKalb Health. I had
a private room and the doctor and
nurses did a great job of explaining
what I would experience with the
surgery. And it’s not that New
York hospitals are not as good as
DeKalb Health, it’s just that they’re
busier and I know I received more
individual care and attention here. I

SAFETY COUNTS
Briner Building Inc. takes a proactive approach to keeping everyone safe on the job.

“The construction industry
as a whole is light years ahead
of where it was 20 years ago with
safety,” says Bryan Harshbarger, vice
president of sales and marketing for
Briner Building Inc., a design-build
contractor in Bluffton specializing
in commercial and industrial
construction. “Our goal is to bring
everybody home safe each night.”
Harshbarger says Briner has
upgraded its safety program and
modified it through the assistance of
its insurance broker, Gibson.
“Gibson has been working with
Briner Building for about four
years,” says Jordan Scheiber, a
principal and risk advisor with
Gibson. “During that time we have
seen an evolution in safety go
from focus to culture. As Briner
continues to harness best practices
into its everyday operations, it will
continue to be a better employer and
contractor. Gibson’s construction
risk management practice is very
proud to say we partner with such a
respectable firm.”
“We’re not waiting for an issue
to arise, we are taking steps ahead
of time to be proactive,” says
Harshbarger. “Gibson’s input has
been very helpful and our safety
director, Alex Kellam, heads up the
safety committee and coordinates
safety training. He also reviews the
weekly safety meetings that are held
at each job site. Every Monday, we
have something we call ‘toolbox talk’
where the foreman gets the crew
together and they discuss safety
issues specific to the project.”
An industry standard for
evaluating a company’s safety
record is the EMR (experience
modification rating) or MOD
(modification rating). Harshbarger
says it’s a formula used for worker’s
compensation calculation. It’s based
on a company’s loss in a ratio of how
many man-hours you worked.
“A good rating is 1.0 or below,”
he says. “Five years ago, we were
around 1.2. This year, we’re at .72,
which is really as good as it can get.”
Harshbarger explains that, it’s not
just about educating the construction
crew about safety, it’s also important
to discuss safety with the customers.
“If we’re adding onto a facility,
we fence off the worksite area, post
signage, give the owners hard hats
and reinforce that no one should
go out on the worksite without a
hard hat and that it’s better to have
someone from the construction team
with them. When you see someone
working at a construction site,
you just have to remember that’s
someone’s mom or
dad and they have
families who are
waiting for them to
come home at the
end of the day.”

“Doris, we’ve got some cars
coming in. I don’t know how
many,” Delmar Johnson told his
wife one afternoon in 1956. “You
and I had better get up to the
Auburn Hotel.”
Those words ushered in the first of
six decades of classic car gatherings
that would later become known
as the Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Festival. Only 14 cars attended that
first informal meeting, but they set
the stage for a tradition that now
encompasses all of Auburn each
year during Labor Day week. And
Doris Johnson, wife of the man
who dreamed it into existence, has
attended every one.
Doris loves to share festival stories,
and she has many. Though she and
Del never took a salary from their
labor of love, they made a fortune
in memories. “You have a lot of
experiences when you don’t have
a lot of money,” laughs Doris as
she reminisces. “It hasn’t been a
dull life!”

That first year, Doris recalls,
not a single car that rolled into
Auburn had been restored, and the
people who brought them were just
interested in having a good time. Joe
Kaufmann, who later became famous
for restoring classic cars, drove in
from Wisconsin with his Duesenberg
full of people. “There was a beautiful
bar in the back,” tells Doris, “and the
only one sober was the driver!”
The Presidential Suite at the
Auburn Hotel became the social hub
for that gathering and those that
followed. Beer was iced down in the
bathtub, and Doris kept everyone
supplied with food. “I made coffee,
milk and meatloaf sandwiches,” she
remembers. “People would sleep on
the floor or on the courthouse lawn.
Auburn didn’t accept them very well,
but they kept coming back!”
After several years of hosting car
enthusiasts, Del and Doris decided
they’d better make some money
to support the festival. Someone
suggested having an auction, so the
pair went in search of an auctioneer.
The only ones in the area were

the Kruse family, but according to
Doris, “all they did was sell farm
equipment.” They signed on anyway
and the festival received its first real
income: a percentage of the auction
proceeds and the entry fees they
collected at the gate.
Doris tells of an early auction that
stands out in her memory. “The
festival had a house trailer at
the school and we got the gate
money,” she recalls. “One year
it poured down rain so hard that
the volunteers came into the
trailer with wet paper money
stuffed everywhere but their ears.
Del told me, ‘Doris, take some
girls with you and count it and
lay it out on our basement floor.’
So we did. We had money in
rows everywhere!”

anyway.’ Once it was a man from
New Zealand. He wanted to pay us,
but we never took any money. After
he left, I found two cans he had left
on the dresser for us. It was tongue.
Tongue!” Doris shakes her head and
laughs in mock disgust.

Del and I looked at each other—
opera?! But we went and, at the
intermission, Mrs. Cord said, ‘Del,
do you want to watch the rest of this
opera? I’d rather go and gamble.’ Del
said, ‘I would, too!’ So off we went.”
THAT FIRST YEAR, DORIS
RECALLS, NOT A SINGLE CAR
THAT ROLLED INTO AUBURN
HAD BEEN RESTORED, AND THE
PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT THEM
WERE JUST INTERESTED IN
HAVING A GOOD TIME.
The festival became so intertwined
with the Johnsons’ life that they
regularly opened their home to outof-towners, no matter how busy they
were. “Del would say, ‘Doris, we’ve
got a guest,’ and I’d say, ‘I don’t have

spent a lifetime making them. She
sat with Jay Leno on the steps
in front of the old Presidential
Suite. She met the pilots of the
Enola Gay and invited them to be
in the parade. She attended VIP
parties at Nevada auctions where
she met Liberace and Barrett
Jackson. Most importantly, she
has watched a little gathering
of 14 cars and their rowdy drivers
grow into an international spectacle.
She may never have stayed in
the Presidential Suite herself, but
there’s no doubt that Doris is the
First Lady of the Festival. Promoting the festival took Doris
and Del to auctions all over the
country and on three of their trips,
the late E.L. Cord’s wife invited them
to stay with her. “She lived in a big
mansion overlooking Reno and she

A 200th birthday calls for a big
celebration! More extravagant than
cake and streamers, a 200th birthday
is a time to pull out all the stops.
That is what we’re doing in Indiana
this year. Hoosiers from all corners
of the state have stepped up to
help make Indiana’s 200th birthday
something for the history books.
Planning for the state’s birthday
started in 2011 when Governor
Mitch Daniels created the Indiana
Bicentennial Commission. The
commission is a 15-member body,
chaired by Becky Skillman and Lee
Hamilton, charged with overseeing
the planning and execution of a
statewide celebration. First Lady
Karen Pence serves as the official
bicentennial ambassador. The
commission wishes to engage all 6.5
million Hoosiers in this special year.
Legacy Projects allow Hoosiers
from across the state to celebrate
the bicentennial locally. Legacy
Projects are community projects
that highlight the four key pillars
of the bicentennial: youth and
education, community involvement,
nature conservation, and historical
celebration. There are now more than
1,300 legacy projects taking place
in all 92 Indiana counties. There are
13 projects happening right here in
DeKalb County.
There are also events taking place
on a larger scale throughout the
bicentennial year. Attend Hoosier
Homecoming on October 15, 2016,
on the Statehouse Lawn. This is
a free, family-friendly event with
good food, great entertainment and

In honor of Indiana’s bicentennial, “Hoosier Made:
World Driven” will look at the heyday of Indiana’s
automobile industry when some of the world’s
finest motorcars were built in the Hoosier state. The
exhibit will be presented at Indiana’s three leading
transportation museums, each with its own special
exhibit focus: The Studebaker National Museum in
South Bend will feature the Brass Era of pre-1915; the
Kokomo Automotive Museum in Kokomo will showcase
the Jazz Era of the late ‘teens and early 1920s; and

Women Workers of the Auburn Automobile
Company Community Exhibit
The “Women Workers of the Auburn Automobile
Company Community Exhibit,” an official Indiana
Bicentennial Legacy Project, is presented by the Auburn
Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum through Labor
Day 2016. The exhibit, housed in the Export and
Domestic Sales Gallery, is composed of photographs
of women working in the Auburn Automobile Company
factory and offices, as well as objects that would have
been used or produced as part of their work. The
museum hopes that some of these women will be
identified by relatives, neighbors and family friends so
that their legacy can be preserved for years to come.
This exhibit illuminates a unique perspective of the
Auburn Automobile Company, and also of the city of
Auburn, DeKalb County and northeast Indiana. Work at

them more freedom
to participate
in recreational
activities, while
adhering to
community values
based on hard
work, family and

workforce, men changed the perception they had towards

of the community exhibit says, “Overall, it’s nice to be
able to celebrate Hoosier women in an accurate and
appropriate manner. I believe many Hoosiers have
the feeling that women were often powerless and not
influential in the early 20th century, which is simply
untrue. When you take a closer look at the role of
women in the Indiana workforce at companies such as
the Auburn Automobile Company, you see that their
mere presence wielded influence and altered their roles
in the community. For something to be historically
significant, it doesn’t always have to be revolutionary or
extraordinary. In fact, it is perhaps the ordinary Hoosiers
and their struggle to make a living that we should

Like any good story, the setting
can be as important as any of
the individual characters. This is
especially true for the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Festival. From the
time those first ACD Club members
rolled into town in 1955 until today,
this historic downtown has played
a vital role in making Auburn the
backdrop for the “World’s Greatest
Classic Car Show and Festival.”
With its diverse businesses,
historic buildings and, of course,
the DeKalb County Courthouse as
its crown jewel, the city square is a
vibrant example of the community’s
appreciation for historic
preservation. Added to the National
Register of Historic Places in 1986,
downtown Auburn encompasses 52
contributing buildings developed
between 1870 and 1935.
Businesses Coming Together
Working together in the heart of downtown Auburn
has always been a top priority for business owners.
Even today the Downtown Auburn Business Association
(DABA) has a membership of close to 100 distinct retail
and service businesses that all share the common goal of
“fostering and maintaining a viable downtown business
district through community pride and awareness,
promotion and marketing and philanthropic endeavors,”
says Mike Littlejohn, DABA president.
As one of the oldest business associations in the state
of Indiana, DABA hosts more than a dozen unique events
annually with its active membership. From Summer
Cruise-Ins to the annual Christmas Parade, downtown
business owners focus their efforts on bringing people to
Courtyard Park nestled close to the Couthouse in downtown Auburn
downtown and giving back to their community. Over the
years, DABA has also sponsored many outdoor summer
art exhibits. Each exhibit boasts a whimsical theme that
engages local artists and the community alike to be a
tourist in their own hometown.
Every three years, the Auburn Arts Commission
takes on the task of celebrating community art with its
downtown art exhibit. This year’s display “Sculptures
on the Square III – The Magic of Metal” will carry on
the tradition of showcasing outstanding art in DeKalb
County and will tie into Indiana’s bicentennial by
honoring the many uses of metal in the development of
the community. The installation will be on display in
downtown Auburn from June 2016 until September 2016.

Keeping Up the Good Work
With a vibrant mix of volunteers, business owners
and community leaders, the heart of downtown and
the appreciation for revitalization stay relevant today.
With the creation of the Auburn Development Advisory
Committee (ADAC) in 2009, a dedicated group of
community volunteers has continued to work with the
City of Auburn, the State of Indiana and a variety of likeminded organizations to create and champion Auburn’s
downtown revitalization plans.
Recognized by Indiana’s Office of Community and
Rural Affairs (OCRA) in 2015 as an official Main
Street Community, ADAC uses a four-point approach
of organization, design, promotion and economic
development to build upon Auburn’s strengths and
leverage the community’s “Home of the Classics” legacy.
ADAC and DABA partner together to create a viable retail
and business district to support local entrepreneurs.
With the support of its active volunteers, ADAC has
designated February as “We Love Auburn” month. Each
weekend features a variety of downtown events designed
to promote community. A “Yarn Bombing” installation
wrapping Auburn in love as the community adopts trees,
planters, signs and light poles and custom wraps them
to demonstrate its appreciation for downtown. Yarn
Bombing participants have ranged in age from 4 to 94,
demonstrating the community’s diverse and vast interest
in supporting this shared neighborhood.
ADAC is now implementing a First Friday’s program
to encourage visitors and residents alike to mark their
calendars for the First Friday of each month to catch a
unique night of fun, food and entertainment in downtown
Auburn. Momentum continues to build for ADAC as it
takes the lead as an Indiana Hometown Collaboration
Initiative Community.
Chosen as one of just four communities in Indiana
with a population of under 25,000, Auburn has been
working to evaluate, plan and implement programs
needed in the community to promote quality of place,
leadership and economic vitality for the future. ADAC’s
partnership with OCRA will not only result in a variety
of funding prospects, but also educational and technical
assistance from the state of Indiana and its partners
Ball State University and Purdue University. This
collaboration, hard work and perseverance will ensure
ADAC’s mission of encouraging revitalization and
sustainable growth of the City of Auburn is successful.

The downtown organizations and the DeKalb
County Visitors Bureau collaborate to leverage
existing events, festivals and downtown activities
to enhance tourism for the community. A County
Economic Impact Study offered by the Indiana Office
of Tourism Development revealed that the impact of
tourism dollars to the community is vast and broad. It’s
estimated that visitors to DeKalb County spend nearly
$38.1 million annually, which result in supporting
733 jobs. These visitors also generate Federal, State
and local taxes totaling $7.5 million. This impact
on the local economy helps drive the city of Auburn

Come see some of the items being digitized by the Eckhart Public
Library from the Jack Randinelli Collection and the John Martin
Smith Collection. The Randinelli Collection is the focus of a project
called “All Things Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg: The Early
Years,” which explores the foundational years of four major ACD
organizations and events – the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Club, the
ACD Festival, the ACD Museum, and the ACD Hoosier Car Tour.
The collection, which is on loan by Randinelli’s daughter Kari
Randinelli Ackerman, contains several decades’ worth of behindthe-scenes history by way of letters, meeting minutes, photographs,
financial records and other items. The Smith Collection includes
items of local, state and national importance, including many
items relating to Auburn’s automotive history. The collection is
on loan by the Smith family. Digitization of these collections is
made possible by grants from the U.S. Institute of Museum and

Auctions America’s Auburn Fall
event is one of the country’s premier
celebrations of the hobby, and the
longest running event in collector
car auction history. Each year, the
historic Auburn Auction Park plays
host to a 900+ collector car auction
featuring a diverse roster of classics,
hot rods, exotics, muscle cars and
more. From the entry-level collector
through to the veteran hobbyist, the
auction caters to enthusiasts of all
stripes, spanning a broad range of
makes, eras and price points, as well
as select automobilia.
In addition to five days of auction
excitement, the Auburn Fall program
also includes a car corral and swap
meet, unique vendors, celebrity
appearances and thrill-seeking
automotive themed activities,
providing fun for the whole family.
A new addition to this year’s
schedule is a Saturday morning
Cars & Coffee meet, whereby those
bringing a classic car for display
will receive a complimentary event
pass for two to the weekend’s
festivities. If celebrity-spotting
is more your style, Bill Goldberg
of WWE fame and automobile
aficionado, will be onsite and
signing autographs on September 3.

Perfectly matched to the Auburn
Cord Duesenberg (ACD) Festival
weekend, this year’s Auburn Fall sale
will once again be headlined by an
ACD trifecta. The stunning trio is
highlighted by the 1933 Duesenberg
Model J Berline, chassis no. 2385,
with coachwork by renowned
Parisian coachbuilder, Franay.
Affectionately dubbed ‘The Queen of
Diamonds’ in reference to the car’s
first owner, the Countess Proceri,
the former Mabel Boll, the car is one
of very few surviving Dusenbergs
with coachwork built outside of the
United States, and the only surviving
Franay body on the Model J chassis.
The group also includes a 1929
Auburn 8-90 Cabriolet, striking in
red and black, and offered with pride
in the city of its birth, along with a
highly original, award-winning 1937
Cord 812 S/C Phaeton.

Downtown Cruise-In. The downtown streets are closed for this unique
gathering of worldwide visitors all here to see the diverse mix of over 600
automobiles. Bring your vehicle for display and stroll around the historic
Auburn Courthouse as you take in the sights and sounds. Fill your tank with
food from surrounding area food trucks. Enjoy our ice cream social, kids’
activities, the official festival beer tent and live music all night. Local musical
favorites, Chris Worth and Big Caddy Daddy, are sure to have you dancing in

As is the case with many
festivals, the Auburn Cord
Duesenberg Festival, while steeped
in tradition, is always exploring ways
to expand our reach and attract new
enthusiasts. One such opportunity
came to us in 2015 as we explored
hosting our first Miss Auburn Cord
Duesenberg pageant. At first glance,
one might find it hard to see the
connection of hosting a pageant
that acts as a preliminary step to
the famed Miss America pageant
and our love for classic cars. Upon
further evaluation, the parallels can
shine like that coveted crown.
The Miss America pageant began
in the 1920s, the same time the
Auburns, Cords and Duesenbergs
were in their heyday with the
Auburn Automobile Company. The
pageant and its preliminary events
focus on maximizing the potential
of young women, with an emphasis
on style, service, scholarship and
success. The women involved in
this organization hone their skills in
communication with a commitment
to service that is unmatched. We
have been so impressed with the
overall event, but most importantly
the selection of Taylor Knox as the
first Miss Auburn Cord Duesenberg
couldn’t be a better fit.
Knox was born and raised in
Auburn and graduated from DeKalb
High School. She earned her
bachelor’s degree in just three years
from Grand Valley State University
with a degree in political science and
history. “I chose the Miss America
program to enhance my professional
strengths. I have been prepared
in numerous ways for my career—

some of the finest museums in the world. The six museums in Auburn (with nine total
in DeKalb County) house some of the most impressive automotive and transportation
artifacts in the world. The DeKalb Alliance of Museums offers a Passport Ticket which
discounts general admission prices after you purchase a regular admission at the first
museum you attend. You won’t want to miss a single one of these precious gems that
are the crown jewels of Auburn.

It all started with the Auburn Cord Duesenberg
Automobile Museum. A National Historic Landmark,
the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum has
welcomed nearly two million visitors from all 50 states
and from over 40 countries since the museum opened its
doors on Saturday, July 6, 1974. It inhabits the former
Auburn Automobile Company’s national headquarters
building, a place where history was made over 75 years
ago! Many of the Auburn and Cord automobiles you see
driving around Auburn each Labor Day weekend were
designed and developed in this very building.

The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum is

to see why the museum has received such high national
praise. This automotive mecca exhibits over 120 cars
ranging from 1894 to 1999 and automotive displays on

extensive collection of Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg

the Auburn Automobile Company. The museum’s
emphasis is on post World War II cars, muscle cars,
trucks, vehicles from 1908 “high wheelers” and current
production pickups. Come tour the International Gallery
of Trucks and engines, plus a model car/truck and
toy collection.

a variety of vehicles to entertain the whole family.
Enjoy the classic beauty of a Duesenberg and feel

an up-close look at cars including your TV and movie

Early Ford V-8 Museum

glimpse of life in the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. The museum specializes
in Ford Motor Company vehicles made between 1932 and 1953,
including Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, commercial vehicles, tractors and
Ford Industrial engines. This addition to automotive history houses
artifacts, memorabilia, technical displays, literature and some of the
vehicles that honor the Ford Motor Company and its influence on
automotive and American history. The museum currently has 8,000
square feet of display area providing a rich educational experience to
those who remember the vehicles of the 1932 to 1953 era and those
who want to know more about them.

The History Center offers a compelling living history,
alive with the sights, sounds and equipment that have
defined America’s military encounters. The museum
complex spotlights over 150 World War II military
vehicles and thousands of uniforms, weapons and
smaller artifacts.

The Hoosier Air Museum is a showcase for historical
aircraft and various types of aviation memorabilia.
Committed to preserving the history of military aviation,
the museum provides a facility where visitors can view
historic aircraft and learn about the individuals who
designed, built, flew and maintained them. Vintage
and military aircraft include two World War I French
Nieuport fighters and a Cobra Helicopter.

PARKING
Ample parking is available throughout downtown
and into the residential area. Select areas will be
reserved at times depending upon events and will be
clearly marked. If a vehicle is parked in a reserved or
restricted area without permission, it will be towed at
