our City. It’s one of those major events that we will refer to for years to come.
As I pulled out of the gates in my own neighborhood off of Echo Lane at 3:30PM that afternoon to drive into San Elijo

Hills, I saw the black plumes of smoke. And my heart sank. After a day of following the fires in Carlsbad and Camp
Pendleton, it wasn’t hard to quickly understand the threat these flames raging just behind CSUSM represented.
What I didn’t realize is just how fast this threat would consume not only our hills, but our lives.
As I drove into San Elijo Hills and looked back over the hill, I could see why residents there would be terrified.
They couldn’t see the source of the flames, but the smoke coming over the hill was ominous.
I instinctively knew it would be best to go back home, so I continued my drive down San Elijo Rd. and back
into my neighborhood the back way – driving up Rancho Santa Fe and through the Lake toward Discovery.
By the time I reached Craven Rd. – the evacuations had already begun.
I had left home only 30 minutes before and already my neighborhood was a ghost town.

I’ve lived in San Marcos for 20 years, so this wasn’t my first
evacuation. The fires back in 1996 when we lived on
Goldfinch Way were my first experience of what fires can do
here in San Marcos. Next were the fires that caused the
evacuation of our home in San Elijo Hills in 2007. Through
each of these experiences, we have learned what we will
take with us in an emergency and how to react swiftly
without panic.
Even so, on this particular day, I was home alone with only
our 2-seater car, which meant, I wouldn’t be taking much

As I stood in the parking lot near Starbucks, I could see the structures standing on the scorched
hillside. I watched the helicopters circling overhead as they scooped up water from Lake San Marcos
and made their way back to the flames.

Instead of feeling like we were in the midst of an unexpected emergency, it became quite obvious
that we were witnessing a response that had been well-planned.

Diego, our state and federal partners and
the U.S. Military, as well as CAL FIRE and
the numerous fire protection agencies
that came to the aid of our residents.
The unprecedented level of cooperation
displayed during this emergency made a
critical difference in controlling the fires,
protecting lives and limiting the damage.

who lost their homes. You have the
support of your entire community as
you recover and rebuild.

That’s when the gratitude starts to sink in. That’s when you recognize the value of being part of a community. The
value of sharing. Knowing our sheriff deputies were guarding our evacuation zones. Knowing our firefighters were
skillfully keeping the fire from devouring our neighborhoods. Knowing our City was orchestrating the necessary

I personally have a great deal of pride in our City – for so many reasons. Our schools and educational opportunities.
Our parks and trails. Our public safety. Our City leadership and staff. And, as devastating as this fire has been, it’s also
been a perfect example of why I am so proud to live here.
Not only did we rally through the emergency response, but today, we continue to rally in the after-math.
The clean up. The recovery. The response of residents who are raising funds for the families who lost their
homes. The thank you notes and posters and gifts pouring into our local fire stations. The way that this
disaster has brought us all together has been nothing short of amazing.
We will no doubt learn new lessons through this experience about how to be better prepared for an
evacuation, where to go for information, and how to give back. And, the only way to get the most from this
experience is to SHARE it with each other.

San Marcos is still developing and as residents here and now, we are
impacting the future of the entire City – right in our own backyards.
So, get to know San Marcos! It’s a great place and with fully engaged
community, it will just keep getting better.

This area has a mix of residential, commercial, open space and parks. It’s also home to
CSUSM. A wide mix of homes are here – from single-family to estate residential and, of
course, higher density apartments and condo complexes close to the university. The new
Creekside District is also under development and will be the source of a lot of new growth
in the years ahead.
BUSINESS/INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT
The western part of this area of town is mostly lower density residential single-family
neighborhoods, along with four mobile home parks. But, it also includes lots of industrial
space. Old California Restaurant Row and the movie theater are all part of this neighborhood,
as is Furniture Row, Palomar Community College Transit Station and Bradley Park.
COLLEGE AREA NEIGHBORHOOD
This area is mainly residential with Santa Fe Hills as the largest planned development.
Home to Palomar Community College, this area also houses Palomar Elementary School
and San Marcos Middle School. You’ll also find lots of commercial and light industrial land
uses along South Santa Fe Road and West Mission Road.
LAKE SAN MARCOS NEIGHBORHOOD
Lake San Marcos is actually not part of the planning area of San Marcos because most of
it lies outside of the City’s municipal boundaries. This area is mostly residential, but if
you’ve driven around the Lake recently, you’ll see all sorts of new development
(residential, commercial and office) popping up. San Marcos High School sits on the edge
of this neighborhood.
QUESTHAVEN/LA COSTA MEADOWS NEIGHBORHOOD
This neighborhood is home to two large adopted specific plans: San Elijo Hills and Old
Creek Ranch – both of which are still developing. A great spot to explore in this
neighborhood is Double Peak Park with 360-degree views. The southern portion of this
area used to be the San Marcos Landfill, but this 200-acre area has been replanted with
native coastal sage scrub and will remain designated as open space.

Summer Soccer Clinic
San Marcos is a hotbed for soccer talent, led by FC Sol, the top competitive youth club
in San Marcos. FC Sol currently fields 16 teams for boys, girls and teens, and is a member
of the prestigious Presidio Soccer League, facing many of the top players and teams in
southern California.
FC Sol will host a free, two-day Summer Soccer Clinic on June 16-17 from 5-7PM. The club's renowned coaching staff will be on hand
to teach skills and techniques for youth players of all ages and experience levels. Advanced registration is required, so be sure to visit
www.fcsol.org for details on how to enroll your child in this free, fun and fast-paced soccer clinic.
Then, from July 14-18, FC Sol Technical Director Sam Lauris will host a co-ed soccer camp for kids and teens.

The 1st Annual Chicken Parade for San Marcos
WHAT IS A CHICKEN PARADE AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH SAN MARCOS? GREAT QUESTION!
If you are not yet familiar with the San Marcos Arts Council (SMAC), they are an allvolunteer Board working to promote and advance artistic activity in the community,
primarily through education, exposing the public to the fine and performing arts, and
serving as a community resource in promoting artistic development throughout San
Marcos and the 78 Corridor.
Since its inception in 2009, the Council has regularly hosted free hands-on activities
at community events, partnered with artists and non-profits, as well as sponsored
artist workshops. A City grant in 2013 has allowed the Council to reach new heights
in programming and outreach.
The Council is looking to raise enough revenue to sustain arts
programming for fiscal years 2015-2016. For those looking to get

San Marcos Arts Council Chicken Parade is a city-wide scavenger hunt
that will officially run from July 1 to September 30.
In partnership with the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, The Chicken Parade
will bridge connections between local businesses, San Diego artists and the 90,000
residents of the City of San Marcos – as well as residents along the 78 corridor.
The San Marcos Arts Council supplied 25 chicken sculptures this year and then
local businesses that are members of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce
have stepped up to sponsor a chicken sculpture. Each sculpture is being
matched up with a local artist and artists have a few weeks to finish adorning
their chicken sculpture.
On July 1, the artist-adorned chicken sculptures will be displayed in the various
businesses that are participating and the scavenger hunt fun will begin.
In conjunction with the sculptures, the San Marcos Arts Council will be
simultaneously offering coloring projects for youth and social media
competitions for all ages. Coloring projects, social media competitions and
public participation in the Chicken Parade are free.
The Chicken Parade will come to a Grand Finale in October when all the
chickens will be showcased at the San Marcos Horse Heritage event,
October 19, 2014. At that time, the Chicken Auction will open and go live!

monthly mixer, also held at the San Marcos Historical Society Heritage Park
located at 1952 Sycamore Drive in San Marcos.
The cool thing about this project, spearheaded by the San Marcos Arts Council, is
how it is bringing so many aspects of our community together – the business
community, the arts community, San Marcos history, as well as the future, with
hands-on activities for children and creative social media competitions.
In fact, we can almost guarantee The Chicken Parade will help you discover something
you didn’t know about San Marcos – maybe you’ll discover the San Marcos Arts
Council for the first time, or a local business, or a local artist. Or maybe you’ll learn
a little bit about San Marcos.
For example, did you know that not long ago San Marcos was pretty much covered in
chicken farms? In fact, the chicken farm that was located where CSUSM now stands
was the 2nd largest egg-producing ranch in the world in the early 1980s.
The San Marcos Arts Council would like to bring that history back to life
through their biggest fundraiser and community art project to date,
the Chicken Parade. Funds raised in the 2014 SMAC Chicken Parade
will support the Council’s mission to “foster and promote an arts
environment that enriches the community and envision a culturally
exciting and artistically vibrant community wherein all forms of
the arts flourish.”
