A note from Michael E. Slaughter, Principal
Dear Alumni/ae, friends, and supporters of Marquette:
In the past few years, I have had the privilege of
acting as tour guide for numerous class reunions.
Since we opened the new commons, we have been encouraging
alumni to hold their class reunions here at Marquette. As part of
that, I have also been giving tours of the school.
The feedback we receive afterwards is very rewarding. Alumni of
all decades are amazed with what is happening with their old high
school. And in some ways it most certainly is an old high school
with many of the traditions and history still evident. But in many
other ways we have fully entered into the 21st century.
So, what’s in store for Marquette?
Well, even though we have shown an 80+% increase in enrollment
over the past 9 years, I‘d still like to get the word out to our local
Catholics and “persons of other faiths” that a faith based education
rooted in the Catholic tradition is not only a viable alternative but
continues to meet the spiritual needs of our teenagers.
And, not that I’m looking to retire anytime soon, but before I do start
thinking of my future post Marquette, I want to fulfill one last desire/
dream of mine – that being to get the support to build a state of
the art science lab on top of the existing 1982 wing. In preliminary
diagrams the current media center would remain our technology
lab, the 4 classrooms across from the media center would be used
exclusively as Math classrooms, and above this would be built 4
large labs—one being a chemistry lab, one being a biology lab, one
being a physics lab, and the fourth being an engineering lab. Thus
the 1982 wing would be transformed into the Marquette Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math building.
What do you think of that? It may never happen, but then again,
with the support of all of you, it could become a reality in the next
few years. Wouldn’t that be cool!
From the President My name is David
Bartosiak. I am currently
serving as President of
the Board of Directors
of Marquette Catholic
High School. I have held
leadership positions for
various organizations
over the years; President of the Boys &
Girls Club of Alton, and the Alton-Godfrey
Rotary Club, and Chairman of the Alton
Parks & Recreation Commission. While
great organizations, the opportunity
to serve MCHS, its students and the
Marquette Family has been a truly
rewarding and blessed experience.
As I mention the Marquette Family; I am
not a Marquette grad and I do not have
any children that previously or currently
attended the School, so I am a bit of an
outsider. My daughter Ava, however, will
be a member of the Class of 2023, and
anyone that knows Ava, knows that she
already bleeds Marquette Blue!
People have often asked why I was drawn
to become involved with Marquette. It
is quite simply the uniqueness of the
Marquette Family that caused my interest.
Through college classmates, business
acquaintances and friends, I became
aware of this strong bond that MCHS
alumni have with each other. It is pretty
special, and I am almost jealous that I am
not yet a genuine part of the Marquette
Family.
In conclusion, in the last Graduate newsletter I wrote about some
of the nicknames students at Marquette had acquired. I asked
for feedback with you telling me some of the more unique ones.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get much of a response so I don’t really
have a follow up for you. Oh well, maybe amongst yourselves you
discussed it.
I was relating to someone a couple
weeks ago, that the Marquette Family
is almost like “The Cardinal Way”, until
you’re a part of it, you don’t understand
how special it is; unless you’re a part of
it, you don’t understand how real it is. It is
not just an expression, it is a community
spirit!
If you are ever in the area, stop by for a tour. Encourage your
classmates to have their reunion here! You’ll love it.
I hope that all of the Marquette Family
have a safe and enjoyable summer!
On Explorers,
God Bless,
Michael E. Slaughter ‘74

Marquette seniors make huge impact with Senior Mission Project
For the past 15 years, the senior class has gone on a service-type mission trip to an out of town location. The
Marquette seniors have gone to Mexico, New Orleans, LA, Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL and worked on
many worthwhile service projects, including Habitat for Humanity.
This year, the Class of 2016 began a new tradition by focusing on how they could make a difference in our local
community through the Alton-area Bucket Brigade, Alton Parks Department, and Riverbend Head Start.
The Bucket Brigade, co-sponsored by Pride, Inc., The Telegraph and Sherwin Williams has been painting homes
for area residents since 1988. The program matches volunteer teams with homeowners who are no longer able
to maintain their homes without assistance. In order to qualify for the program, homes must be one-story, owner
occupied residences. Most of the homeowners that benefit from this program are seniors who simply cannot
handle such a huge job alone. Other recipients are those with physical or financial limitations that prevent them
from doing the work. Volunteer teams complete the painting at no cost to the homeowner.
Dale Neudecker, a Pride, Inc. Board member, created the Bucket Brigade project in 1988. That first year his
volunteer teams painted 23 homes. Since then, the project has grown up to 50 volunteer teams annually and
more than 1380 homes have been painted in River Bend communities.
The Class of 2016 worked for a week in April, scraping, cleaning, power washing and finally painting five different
houses in the Alton-Godfrey area. Several seniors painted the bandstand at Riverview Park and the fences at
Gordon Moore Park. They also helped spread mulch at Haskell Park and along Landmarks Blvd close to the Clark
Bridge access. “We liked the idea of working close to home this year and giving back to our own communities,
said senior Allison Hoefert. “We actually had a lot of fun and met some very nice homeowners.”
Five seniors volunteered throughout the week at Riverbend Head Start as teacher assistants. Their work included
playing with the children as well as assisting with snacks and reading to them. The children at the center made an
impression on the seniors and they didn’t want to leave the children at the end of the week.
In recognition of their
efforts, Mayor Brant Walker
issued a proclamation
declaring May 16-20
“Marquette Catholic High
School Class of 2016
Week”. Paula MattixWand, Campus Minister
at Marquette coordinated
the event for the Marquette
students. “These seniors
did so much work in a short
amount of time. We are
so proud of
what they
accomplished.
We are
definitely
excited about
what can be
accomplished
next year!”

playing at Ole Miss is strictly first
class. “There aren’t any more 5 or
6 hour bus rides,”, he said. “Now
we fly everywhere we go.” When
Jake is not playing basketball, he is
studying accountancy at Ole Miss.
Students for Soldiers group at Marquette
Carmen Serio has taught at
Marquette for 43 years. He has
held several roles at the school
including Campus Minister, Retreat
coordinator, Theology Department
head, and maintenance coordinator
throughout his career.
All of these roles have been very
important to him but his most recent
role really hits home.
In 2004, at the urging of several
MCHS students, Carmen started a
group at Marquette called Students
for Soldiers. This group meets
throughout the school year and
prays for Marquette alums and
friends who are active in the military.
“My son Pat was in the military and
I would send packages to him. He
asked me if I could send enough
for the others too and that made
me realize how much it means to
these guys to see that people are
thinking about them. When Katie Hill
(Class of 2007) and other students
suggested we start the group, it was
a no brainer,” Carmen Serio said.
For the past 3 years, Students for
Soldiers coordinated a drive for
supplies to send overseas. They
collected toiletries, snacks, phone
cards and other items to send to the
soldiers.
party and was trying to think of
something I could do to help others.
I decided to have everyone bring
something that would help with the
supply drive Students for Soldiers at
Marquette, “she said.
Serio and his group have
collaborated with The Military
Support Ministry Group of Alton
on a few activities. In November,
they held a Rosary Walk to raise
awareness of Veterans suicide. The
suicide rate among veterans is triple
that of other Americans.
Once a month there is a Military
Mass in honor of all Military in
the area. This Mass is held at Ss.
Peter & Paul in Alton on the 3rd
Wednesday of the month and all
are always welcome. Janice Dunn
Dunphy and Pennie Destefano
Wisnasky (both from the class
of 1983) are also involved in this
group.
One of the main reasons “Students
for Soldiers” really hits home is
because Carmen’s grandson,
Anthony, is now in active duty
with the Army. Anthony Serio is a
2014 Marquette graduate and was
ready to give back as soon as he
graduated.
Sergeant Silkwood has recently
been recognized for saving a fellow
Marine from committing suicide and
has decided to make this his life’s
work. He intends to aid people in
learning coping techniques to move
past the stressors that cause these
feelings in fellow soldiers. Mr. Serio
sees this as a wonderful success
story about a Marquette alum. He
stays in touch with many Marquette
alums who are serving in the military
and wanted to give back as much
as he could.
Mr. Serio is looking for the names
and addresses of other Marquette
alums who are actively serving in
the military. He is also looking for
the names and graduation dates
of all Marquette alums who have
served in the military throughout the
history of Marquette (1927).
Please contact Carmen at cserio@
marquettecatholic.org or 618-5702599 for more information or to
send in names.
Here are a few photos of those who
are serving in the military.
(We know we have many more
alums serving at present. We want
to stay in touch so please send Mr.
Serio your information.)
Some of the items are taken to
Lambert Airport in St. Louis where
they can be given out at the USO.
Rachel Heinz (then 7th grader at St.
Ambrose) helped with the supply
drive this year with a great birthday
party idea. “I was having a birthday

News from the Athletic Office
It was a great year for Marquette Sports says Marquette Athletic Director, Jack Holmes.
Beginning with fall sports, the football
team qualified for the playoffs, boys
soccer won their Regional, girls’ tennis
advanced 3 girls to the state tournament
(Shelby Jones, Laura Moore and Elena
Gable), the boys’ golf team qualified for
the state tournament in Bloomington and
Carlee Cronin was the one member of
the girls’ golf team to qualify for the state
tournament in Decatur. This was Carlee’s
2nd consecutive state trip. Cross Country
team member, senior Natalie Halliday,
advanced to the Sectional Cross country
meet. Marquette was the best represented school of the Springfield Diocese high schools at the Fall Rosary Rally
held at St. Teresa High School in Decatur.
The winter sports season did not disappoint. The boys’ basketball team won their Regional at Dupo and lost in a
very close game in the Sectional to the team that finished 2nd in the state tournament. Senior basketball player,
Shandon Boone was chosen as the Exchange Club of Alton’s player
of the year. He followed in the footsteps of Deion Lavender (2014),
Nick Certa (2003 and 2004), Michelle Beiermann (2000), Kendra
Snyder (1999),Tony Certa (1998), Erica Oge (1995), Amy Gernigan
(1994), Brad Bohannon (1992) and Steve Mason (1998). Shandon
also scored 33 points in the Illinois Coaches Association All Star
game and was voted most valuable player in this game. Marquette
also won the “Sportsmanship” Award for girls’ basketball at the
banquet. The Dance Team placed 5th in the Class A Jazz IDTA state
competition.
Marquette was well represented at the Catholics for Christ program
in March at Sacred Heart-Griffon High School in Springfield. Each
Catholic High School in the Springfield Diocese was asked to bring
their senior athletes and parents and coaches, and to have one
athlete and one coach give witness about their faith and how it
relates to sports. We were the best represented school at the event
and Head football coach, Darrell Angleton and basketball/football
player, Trey Aguirre, were our speakers.
The girls’ soccer team won their Regional
and Sectional and advanced to the 1A
state tournament in May at Naperville.
The team won third place. The boys’
tennis team had a winning record and
junior, Jonathon Claywell, advanced
to the state tournament. Softball and
baseball were unable to advance past
the regional. Coach Mike Brooks did an
outstanding job with the track team, as
he put together a good sized squad of
boys and girls.
