DIRECTOR’S LETTER
Dear Friend,
I hope you enjoy our first holiday eMagazine, for a window into
the magic of Merchants Square over the holidays. I encourage
you to browse the magazine at your leisure, and hope that it will
inspire you with lots of great ideas for gifts and things to do when
you visit the Square.
I have worked in Merchants Square for 24 years now, and still feel a
special thrill each year when the greens and wreaths begin to adorn
the shops and streets. I feel so fortunate that my job allows me to
regularly walk through this beautiful setting, encountering Father
Christmas, strolling musicians, and tastefully decorated shops and
restaurants along the way. I hope you will have a chance to spend
some time in Merchants Square this holiday season and experience
the joy and beauty first hand.
To keep up with all that is going on in the Square throughout the
year, please visit our new redesigned website and sign up for our
monthly Insider Insights electronic newsletter if you aren’t already
on the list.
Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.
Sincerely,
Marina Ashton

Romantic Day in The Square
A
The 30-minute street
theater version of
“A Christmas Carol”
is a perennial favorite.
6
Few places can successfully combine romance and shopping, but
Merchants Square, adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary
City, can deliver on just that notion. The romantic ambiance of the
Square during the holidays can be found at every turn.
So take a brisk December day with your spouse or significant other,
use the Square as your headquarters, and wander through an itinerary
something like this…
Start the day with breakfast and a warm cup of coffee, hot
chocolate or cider at Aromas on Prince George Street and
head to the Revolutionary City for a scenic and invigorating
morning walk. Stop at the Peanut Shop on your way out
for an energy boost from some chocolate covered cashews.
Don’t have an annual pass for the Revolutionary City? Make
the ticket office at Duke of Gloucester and N. Henry Streets
your next stop on the way. As you wander throughout
the Revolutionary City, take in the beautiful holiday door
decorations on the historic homes and buildings. Amble
over to the Williamsburg Inn and soak in the stunning
decorations while enjoying a glass of champagne. The
grand 75 year-old hotel is beautifully romantic.
Time to head back to Merchants Square for a late lunch.
A Cheese Shop sandwich or cup of Brunswick Stew is
always a welcome treat. The shop’s outdoor seating area
provides a great vantage point for people-watching and
for enjoying Christmas carols and holiday music from one
of the many balladeers and musical groups that share their
talents in the Square during the holidays. It is always fun
to wander the shops dropping suggestions for great gift
ideas. First stop? Try Bella Fine Lingerie for some beautiful
and luxurious selections of lingerie and loungewear. Ooh
la la! Next door you’ll find a well-stocked R. Bryant’s men’s
clothier for a hint of what he might want for Christmas.
And of course, the beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry from
The Precious Gem will make your eyes sparkle!
Ready for a pick-me-up? How about a hot buttered rum
at the Trellis Restaurant Bar to warm you up from the
inside. As dusk falls, it just about time for an entertainment
surprise. Just outside on Duke of Gloucester Street, the
Virginia Theatre Machine is getting ready to perform
a 30-minute version of the holiday classic, “A Christmas
Carol.* ” This hilarious interpretation of Charles Dickens
masterpiece is perfect to get you both in the holiday
spirit. The evening is young and there is still time to
stroll through the Henry Street Shops, browse the
stores and view the gorgeous Christmas tree. Another
romantic stop is the Gallery on Merchants Square.
Located just above Williams-Sonoma, the Gallery is a
treasure trove of beautiful original art, antique furniture,
and one-of-a-kind collectables for a special gift.
As dinnertime arrives, Merchants Square offers some
great options: seafood at Berret’s, beer and brats at the
DoG Street Pub, serious comfort food with a French flair
at Blue Talon Bistro, or American classics at Seasons. If
you are not sure and no reservation has been made, it is
always romantic to cozy up to the bar at the Fat Canary,
or at one of the other establishments for an impromptu
meal and a celebratory drink to close out a wonderful
day together.
*Weekends only.

Decorating Tips from the Masters
Colonial Williamsburg’s holiday decorations are firmly rooted

leaves, dried flowers, assorted fruits and berries, and the
limitless imaginations of their creators.

wealth of holiday how-to and behind-the-scenes information.
