Our 2016 CSA Get-Together
“Walkin’ in Memphis”
Lots of Fun and a Little Business, Too!
John J. and Lynette Kielczewski
CLU, FLMI, President
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I write this article, finally rested up a bit
from a very fun, nice, and productive
few days at our annual Get-Together in
Memphis, Tennessee.
Readers of my monthly articles know
that my September article is generally a
wrap up of the Get-Together. For those
who do read my articles every month,
thank you! Hopefully, I don’t bore you
too much! Well, I won’t disappoint
you… because I’m writing about it
again. The 2016 Get-Together was, once
again, another success.
In the true spirit of fraternalism,
Lauren Wilt, and Marla and Maria
Breidenbach, from the Chicago and St.
Louis areas respectively, co-chaired the
80th Get-Together. Trying to coordinate
any event is no small feat for sure, but
coordinating one from afar, with a group
of people from two different locales definitely couldn’t have been easy for them
or their committee. But they did it, and
the weekend went smoothly from beginning to end. Kudos to the committee for
a job well done!
A few highlights…
Like us on Facebook
When most arrived on Friday afternoon, we got a chance to mingle a bit
after checking in, in the hospitality area.
Rekindling friendships, having a beverage or two, and, of course, just relaxing
was pretty nice. Later in the evening,
dinner was served, and we, of course,
had one of the highlights of our year,
our annual Miss National CSA contest,
with five contestants this year.
On Saturday, we began the day with
a quick roll call, followed by a service
project in which those who wanted
wrote a letter to one of our soldiers
overseas giving them some words of
thanks, encouragement, love, or anything else that was on our mind. A very
nice project indeed. Nowadays, with
texting, email, other forms of social
media, etc., getting a good ole’ “old
school” note from one of us at home is
probably kind of nice for one of our soldiers over in the Middle East, or
Germany, or Japan, or wherever.
Being in Memphis, you have to go to
Graceland. So we did. I’d say that
about 60 of us boarded a couple buses to
Graceland for the balance of the afternoon. Honestly, I really liked it! I have
to admit, my expectations were kind of
low. I never really thought I was an
Elvis fan. I was expecting the “cheesy”
70s stuff: the shag rug, the bell bottoms
era stuff, and, of course, the Elvis
music. Turns out, I guess that I like that
era. Who knew?
Later on Saturday night was the culmination of our Get-Together weekend,
with the announcement of the winners
of CSA’s most prestigious awards.
Our Fraternalist of the Year was
awarded to Wendy Lovell from Lodge
Kruh Osvojenych Zen a Panu. I’ve had
the honor of getting to know Wendy and
her family a bit over the years. Wendy is
a fourth generation (of a five generation
family…think about that for a minute)
CSA member. It is an understatement to
say she is deserving of this award. You
can read more about Wendy on page 8
of this issue.
Our Kropik Scholarship winner was
Kristin Payer from Lodge Mile-Hi
Czechs. Kristin received this monetary
award granted by the Kropik-Papuga
Family which Stan and Candy Papuga
kindly endow every year.
The Miss Congeniality Award, which
is voted upon by the contestants within
the Miss CSA contest, was awarded to
Hunter Yurkovich from Lodge
Groveton. Hunter obviously made a
lasting impression upon her peers.
And, finally, (in case you didn’t
notice the picture on the cover, or our
Facebook post, or our Tweet) Kristin
Payer, in addition to winning the Kropik
Scholarship, was named Miss National
CSA. Kristin had a good night!
I do want to say all five young
women who ran in the contest were
truly great representatives of their families, their communities, their lodges,
and, of course, CSA. When I was 20
years old, there was no way I would
have had the guts to get up in front of
100+ people and bare my soul about
feelings, and wants, and emotions, and
the like. It’s truly impressive to get up
there. No doubt that whatever they
choose to do in life, they’ll be successful.
In addition to the “festivities” of the
weekend, the CSA Board of Directors
also met, as we always do during the
Get-Together weekend. Our Board has
a very good working relationship, both
with each other, as well as with our
management. As I’ve mentioned in articles past, I continue to look forward to
working with them as well as for you in
the months and years ahead.
As always, be safe.
Until next month,
Your brother,
John J. Kielczewski, CLU, FLMI
President, CSA Fraternal Life

Today’s Fraternal
Who Knew?
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
The 80th Annual CSA Get-Together in
Memphis, Tennessee was a success and
great time for all who attended.
However, there were more than a few
surprises!
Who Knew Memphis weather would
rival the heat and humidity of Chicago,
St. Louis, and last year’s Get-Together
city of New Orleans? With temperatures in the mid to high 90’s and a heat
index well over 100 degrees, it was a
battle to stay cool and hydrated!
Who Knew our Get-Together
Committee would plan and execute a
weekend filled with activities that were
fun, social, and fraternal. A big thank
you to Lauren Wilt, Marla and Maria
Breidenbach, and committee!
Who Knew the Hospitalityv Suite
would feature our CSA mascot, Sunky,
and that so many members would keep
it well fed. Members, too, were well fed
while chatting with their lodge members
and Miss CSA Contestants, and reconnecting with long-time friends from
lodges across the country.
Who Knew our tour of Elvis
Presley’s home, Graceland, would be so
informative, interesting, and just plain
fun! The house, with its 1960’s décor
and vibe, was a throwback to another
time and place. Dated, but filled with
expensive furnishings, Elvis surrounded
himself with the best of the time.
Who Knew Elvis’s recordings
earned enough Gold and Platinum
Awards to fill a building! Despite being
the King of Rock ‘n Roll, his only
Grammy Award was for his acclaimed
gospel music!
Who Knew Elvis’s final resting
place, along with his parents and grandmother, would be so lovely. Visitors
were quiet and respectful as they viewed
his grave and whispered prayers and
messages.
Who Knew Elvis Presley may have
been the most famous Fraternalist of
them all? His giving was legendary: He
not only gave to family, friends and
staff, but never lost sight of the “little
people” who gave him a great life. He
was mindful of his humble roots in
Tupelo, never forgetting what it was like
to be poor, and determined to do something about it. King indeed!
Who Knew our Miss CSA Pageant
participants, contestants and crown
bearer, would represent their lodges and
families in such a grand manner!
Who Knew the Miss CSA Contest
would, for the first time, have two
judges who were former Presidents of
CSA? Deborah Zeman and Vera Wilt,
along with Christiana Gentry, did an
admirable job of evaluating our Queen
candidates and making the final choice.
Thank you!
Who Knew that 2016-17 Miss
National CSA, Kristin Payer of Lodge
Mile-Hi-Czechs No. 432, would be the
big winner, twice, having won the Miss
CSA crown and the prestigious Kropik
Scholarship!
Who Knew Hunter Yurkovich, of
Lodge Groveton No. 4, would be voted
Miss Congeniality by her peers?
Who Knew our Fraternalist of the
Year from Lodge Kruh Osvojenych Zen
a Panu, Wendy Kurtz Lovell, would be
the third Kurtz family female to win the
award?
Who Knew there would be so many
people who made the Get-Together a
success: Fraternal Coordinator Amanda
Lovell, Board members Irma Farrell,
Diane DiBianca, Ken Dvorsky, Tom
Ledvina, Terry Placek, Carol Tranter,
Paul Vavrasek, Adam Wilt and Connie
Wolf, as well as CSA Officers John
Kielczewski and Matt Koski, Home
Office Staff Kevin Pileggi, Fraternal
Consultant Helen Gaydusek and Journal
Editor Cynthia Hall!
Who Knew that the GTG Photo
“Booth” could be so much fun? I’ve
replaced my usual photo with this wonderfully silly snapshot of 2015 Queen
Alex Stupka and me at Saturday night’s
Coronation Banquet.

CSA Fraternal Life Board Report
August 7, 2016 - The membership had a
great time “Walkin’ in Memphis” at the
80th annual Get-Together. Some toured
Elvis Presley’s home, Graceland, and
we all enjoyed the barbecue and blues
that the city offers, especially on Beale
Street. For the service project we wrote
notes to service people through an organization called Project Gratitude. This
was very enjoyable and would be a good
project for Lodges to do at their meetings. Congratulations to the committee
for organizing a great weekend.
Congratulations to Wendy Kurtz Lovell
for being named Fraternalist of the Year.
And I would like to congratulate Kristin
Payer, Miss National CSA for 20162017. She also won the Kropik
Scholarship. I am a little prejudiced
since Kristin is from my Lodge, Mile Hi
Czechs No. 432, and I have known her
almost her whole life.
The Board held the meeting follow-
ing the dismissal from the GTG. All
members were present.
There has been discussion concerning the naming of our National Project.
In the past we had themes such as
schools, libraries, and veterans. The
feedback received from the Lodges is
that they would like to work with a local
organization and continue this from year
to year and develop a relationship. So it
will now be known as “CSA Serves”
instead of the National Project.
CSA always tries to offer products
that meet the changing needs of the current membership and attract new members. With this in mind, the Home
Office is in the process of rolling out
new Whole Life policies. These should
be available in most of the states where
we write business.
The Fraternal Department is continually looking for benefits for our members. The latest one is PerkSpot, your
CSA Life Discount Program. Go to:
csalife.perkspot.com and register. There
are various categories and you can start
saving on products right away.
Information is being sent to the Lodges
about this program.
CSA has given out over $60,000 in
scholarships this year thanks to your
generosity. But to continue this great
program for our young members, we
need to replenish our scholarship fund.
This can be done on an individual basis
or through donations from your Lodge.
What a great way to help the future of
CSA.
The next Board meeting will be
November 18 and 19. Please let your
Board representative know of your concerns.
Fraternally,
Irma Farrell
Chairman
Message from the Secretary
Accolades Extended
Matthew and Heather Koski,
Executive Secretary/COO/CRO
Greetings Brothers and Sisters,
What a great Get-Together we just had
in Memphis! It was wonderful to be
reacquainted with old friends and make
some new ones. There was even representation from our newest Lodge in
Florida, Lodge Slunce. For those who
were able to attend, it was a pleasure
sharing this adventure with you as we
explored a new city together. For those
who couldn’t make it this year, please
consider joining us next year in Austin,
Texas. The Lodge in Texas is already
busy putting together the activities. It
sounds like it should be a good time as
well.
Congrats to our Fraternalist of the
Year, Wendy Lovell. She worked very
hard this past year and deserved this
honor. Also, congratulations to our
2016-2017 Miss CSA, Kristin Payer.
What a bright young woman. I’m sure
that everyone is looking forward to her
upcoming articles and any visits she
may make to your local Lodge activities. Just let the Fraternal Department
know, and we will help arrange for the
visit to happen. Kristin also won the
Kropik Scholarship Award which will be
put to good use as she heads back to
classes at “Ole Miss.” Accolades should
also be extended to the Get-Together
Committee that planned the Memphis
trip. A lot of work goes into planning
this annual event, especially without a
local Lodge at the destination. Thanks
for all of your hard work, committee!
It was amusing to see the Marching
of the Ducks at the Peabody Hotel.
6 — www.csalife.com - SEPTEMBER 2016
Who knew you could herd ducks?
Heather and I enjoyed wandering the
Bass Pro Shop inside the Pyramid.
Graceland was great, too. I recall in my
youth hearing all about Graceland and
Elvis. It was interesting to finally experience it. From what I’ve heard Elvis is
still alive. Unfortunately, we didn’t run
into him. Perhaps that was for the best.
However, we did sample the banana
peanut butter ice cream there. It was
really good! Let’s not forget the
Memphis BBQ and the fried chicken at
Gus’s many of us were able to enjoy. As
you can read, there was much to see and
enjoy.
As we wind down from all the excitement and head into the fall and a new
school year for many, don’t forget about
the 81st Get-Together next year. It will
be fun to experience a new city together
and meet up with many new friends.
Fraternally,
Matthew Koski
Secretary, COO, CRO
Old Fashioned Home Cooking
The following article was written by Sis. Adella
Schulz of Lodge Mile-Hi Czechs No. 432.
(Our assignment in Writer’s Group was to tell about
the foods we ate growing up. It was an easy piece to
write since I inherited a rich heritage from my Czech
parents and our farm life.)
Old Fashioned Home Cooking (Part 1)
Growing up in the 1940’s there were seven of us
around the table. The Great Depression and World
War II greatly influenced the way our parents provided for us. Uncle Sam’s food
rationing program impacted us less since we raised most of our own meat and produce. However, the food coupons we ran out of most often were for sugar and coffee.
On the farm, morning and afternoon break was called lunch while the noon meal
was called dinner and the evening meal was called supper which consisted of leftovers from dinner.
Our meals were basic meat, potatoes, and gravy with fresh vegetables from
Mom’s large garden. We kids planted and tended a garden of our own. They were
called Victory Gardens. Knowing Mom, she would have insisted we have a garden
even if it hadn’t been the patriotic thing to do just to teach us responsibility. We
grumbled about it especially when we picked potato beetles by the bucketsful from
the plants. Even as the youngest, I was expected to pitch in, too. We ate fresh field
corn that was tastier than any sweet corn I find nowadays.
The garden produced juicy, red tomatoes, fresh peas and beans, lettuce in abundance, and bright red radishes that we dipped in salt at the table. Mom raised lots of
cabbage that she made into sauerkraut in a large crock. What we didn’t eat fresh
she canned for the winter over a wood stove. I can still see her wiping her brow
with the edge of her apron on those beastly hot and humid Nebraska summer days.
Our meat was mostly pork and chicken, but every now and then Dad would
butcher a beef. The pork chops and roasts came from a hog my father butchered.
Mom was in charge of the chicken butchering by wringing its neck, plucking, and
dressing it out. After my siblings left home, it was up to me to help Dad with the
butchering, milking, and working in the fields. Utilizing everything, they even made
blood sausage, but I could never bring myself to eat it. Their breakfast liver sausage
(jitrnice) was spiced to perfection with plenty of onion and garlic.
Growing up in a Czech community near Valparaiso, Nebraska, all Czechs pretty
much cooked the same recipes. Pork roast with either potatoes or dumplings with
gravy was traditional. Mom doctored up our sauerkraut with bits of bacon, caraway
seeds, and thickened it slightly to take away some of the tartness. Caraway seeds
and poppy seeds distinguish Czech recipes and are used mostly on meats and bakery
items. There is a joke that asks, Q: “How can you tell if a person is Czech?” A: “By
the poppy seed in their teeth.” Everyone thinks their mom’s cooking was the best,
but my mother did make the best fried chicken by first browning it in a cast iron
skillet, sprinkling it with caraway seeds, then baking it until tender in the wood
range. Sliced cucumbers with vinegar and sour cream went well with almost anything. Any leftover potatoes were browned with eggs tossed in and scrambled next
morning for breakfast. We had no electric power so toast was made on top of the
kitchen range. Coffee was essential in our household, and as a child, I wasn’t
restricted from drinking it.

Fraternalist of the Year - 2015 - 2016
On Saturday evening, August 6, 2016, Sis. Wendy Kurtz
Lovell was awarded the prestigious Fraternalist of the Year
award at the Get-Together banquet in Memphis, Tennessee. As
a 4th generation CSA member since birth, Wendy has followed in the footsteps of many faithful, Czech individuals.
Her parents were Jim and Georgianna “Georgie” Kurtz. Both
Georgianna and her mother (Wendy’s grandmother) Mary
Pospisil held various officer positions in CSA throughout their
lives.
Wendy is a teacher at Buckeye Local West Elementary,
where she helps those students needing extra assistance in
mathematics. As President of Lodge No. 121 and Vice
President of D.C. 9, she is dedicated to engaging members to
stay active, as well as mobilizing the youth and adults to work
together to promote goodwill and volunteerism. Wendy has
participated in several Get-Togethers throughout her life, and
she has been a delegate to quite a number of Conventions,
representing the state of Ohio.
Wendy has been faithfully writing for the CSA Journal
each month, giving details and information about what Lodge
No. 121 members are up to. She has installed CSA signs at the
various local ballfields to promote our organization. She has
organized a group of lodge members to maintain the flower
garden and display in front of the Dillonvale Presbyterian
Church; has attended and assisted in potluck picnics for D.C.
9; and has donated time and money to various local churches
(including fundraising, cutting grass, maintaining church
grounds, and cleaning). Wendy will provide transportation to
infirm members needing to attend lodge meetings. In 2015,
she arranged for Lodge No. 121 and D.C. 9 to sign Christmas
cards and letters of well-wishes to patients of local care facilities, nursing home residents, and Ohio veterans. She also
assists in organizing the annual Bowl-O-Rama.
Wendy has two children, me (24) and my brother Elijah
(14); we have also been CSA members since birth.
Throughout our lives, my mother has encouraged us to remain
active in fraternal activities, both in Ohio and Illinois. My
mother’s dedication to others, her support of our culture’s traditions, and her fraternalism across generations are all inspiring. They are the elements which earned her the honor of
being CSA’s 2015-16 Fraternalist of the Year. Her nomination
was respectfully submitted by her husband, my father, Gary
Lovell. In the application he writes, “I am not Czech or
Slovak, myself, but I have come to appreciate the culture, heritage, and what CSA has to offer because of Wendy.”
Congratulations!
Respectfully submitted,
Amanda Lovell
Fraternal Coordinator
The nomination applications for Fraternalist of the Year were
sent to Kelly Shedlock, Fraternal and Youth Director of the
First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. The nominations
were anonymous with just a number identification; no names
were given. Taking this duty very seriously, she used a rating
and point system to select our Fraternalist of the Year and we
are grateful for her due diligence and careful consideration.
Fraternalist of the Year - Nominees
Sis. Mary Ann Sulz
Lodge Missouri No. 1
Mary Ann has been a member for over
50 years, is retired and lives in St.
Louis. Sis. Sulz coordinates the members of her lodge, the local Sokol, and
the American Czech Educational Center
(ACEC) to combine efforts and perform
folk dances in the area. She also coordinates a Czech boutique booth and workers for the ACEC spring and fall festivals. She works tirelessly with the
ACEC Czech School Board promoting
the Czech language and culture. Sis.
8 — www.csalife.com - SEPTEMBER 2016
Sulz deserves this award because she
embodies the values and spirit which
describe the Fraternalist of the Year. She
has been willing to assume officer positions in all of the organizations she takes
part in and has served as a mentor shaping policy and providing good values.
She gives willingly of her gifts and talents and inspires others to reach their
full potential to volunteer and be happy
workers. She is truly one of the treasures
of CSA Fraternal Life.
Sis. Sulz was nominated by lodge
members Connie Wolf and Marla
Breidenbach.
Fraternalist of the Year - Nominees
Bro. Randall (Randy) Vokral
Lodge R. T. Crane, Jr. No. 7
Randy has been a member for 62 years and resides in Schaumburg, Illinois with his
wife Deborah. Randy’s leadership at the lodge’s corn booth gets everyone moving,
young and old. He keeps the corn coming and the rest of us are inspired to “hawk”
it. The older members do the selling, and the younger ones do the “marketing” by
walking around consuming it with high praise! Randy is simply one of those good,
hardworking people who inspires others to do to the same. Always kind, always
polite, quick to help, and insists he is unremarkable. These are the meat and potatoes kind of members who make CSA last and continue to lead in fraternal activities. He has been very attentive to an ailing parent and never complains about any
time he devotes to others. As a lodge, we could not do all the things we do without
the activity and support of real and willing people like Randy.
He was nominated by member Vera A. Wilt.
Sis. Eunice Semple
Lodge Yankee-Jungmann No. 77
Eunice has been a member for over 25 years and has been the lodge Treasurer for
many years. She keeps accurate books and provides monthly Treasurer reports and
has brought the lodge into the new millennium by banking electronically. She has
participated in Join Hands Day, cleaning the Bohemian National Cemetery, and supports CSA’s medicine bottle collection and our National Project by bringing items to
the local food pantry. She researched and prepared a written history of the lodge and
always brings interesting, timely ideas and suggestions to lodge meetings. She has
been a delegate to CSA’s convention, attends Get-Togethers, and has supported the
efforts of the District Council Cultural Division. She is busy in her community, is a
trustee at her library, and volunteers at the Rolling Meadows Senior “Fit and Fun”
class. She is an accomplished cello player and is a member of the Northwest
Community Symphony Orchestra.
She was nominated by lodge member Cindy Bueneman.

Hi,
What a beautiful cover photo (I love parrots!) and such interesting articles about friendship. The hard work put into each
issue is so obvious...thank you.
Julie Barcal
Lodge Harrison/Hus/Garfield No. 378
Thanks, Julie. We thought the parrots were a good choice for
the cover of an issue dedicated to friendship, too.
Dear Gerri,
For your information regarding pearls in the last Journal:
When I was engaged at 21, my fiancé in the Air Force visiting
his brother and wife in Tokyo, Japan, bought me a set of
pearls by K. Mikimoto, Inc. – necklace, earrings and ring
which I still have and cherish. Those pearls were and are
very expensive in the United States.

Thanks, Julia. We hope you are enjoying your timeless
treasures! What a wonderful gift.

sorority. She enjoys volunteering, hiking, reading, traveling,
skiing, bowling and dancing. She hopes one day to give back
to her community and write a book.
Miss CSA 2016-2017
Hello brothers and sisters,
I am excited for the opportunity to write you in this month’s
Journal. I cannot fathom a better way to kick off my first article. My name is Kristin Payer, for those of you who I have not
yet met.
This year’s Miss CSA pageant took place in Memphis,
Tennessee. It was a lovely weekend filled with lots of activities including luncheons, exploring downtown Tennessee, visiting the famous Graceland, and spending time with fellow
members. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and
help make this weekend unforgettable.
The week after the pageant, I actively participated in my
sorority’s formal recruitment. During formal recruitment, the
entirety of our sorority (150 girls) congregate every day to
work on team building activities in preparation for our new
pledge class. This week was my first recruitment practice
week, and it was an experience of a lifetime. Getting to know
each of my sorority sisters on a very personal level is something I will be forever thankful for. It is comforting to know
that I have sisters to lean on during hard times, to share the
best times with, and to truly be a part of something bigger
than myself. As school is starting back up, I cannot wait to
continue my education at the University of Mississippi! I hope
that everyone had a great first week of school! I would also
like to wish good luck to everyone going through formal
recruitment. It is my hope that we all remember to strive for
excellence throughout the school year.

This year, the Autumnal Equinox falls on September 22, the
beginning of Autumn. The term Equinox means “equal days
and nights” meaning daytime and nighttime are just about
equal in length. During autumn, or fall, temperatures can
plunge below freezing at night and average below 70 degrees
(Fahrenheit) during the day.
www.almanac.com/content/first-day-fall-autumnal-equinox
In homage to Autumn, we thought you would enjoy this
excerpt from the CSA Junior Magazine, Vol. 2, No. 11,
November 1962.
Autumn’s Golden Globes
Autumn in America brings Thanksgiving Day family reunions
and the pumpkin colors of harvest times. They go together
like the mix of a savory pumpkin pie. According to a pleasant
fable, this association began on the first Thanksgiving Day.
The feasting over, the Pilgrims’ governor called for attention,
unsheathed his sword and held it out to tap a wooden trencher,
saying: “Hail, pie of the pumpkin! I dub thee Prince of
Thanksgiving Day.”
Like many legends, this one is true in spirit at the cost of
strict accuracy. It is true that the Plymouth settlers quickly
learned about pumpkins from the Indians. To this day many
farmers follow the Indian practice of planting pumpkins
between corn rows. They continue an arrangement that
brightens the fall landscape as well as providing a harvest of
pies.
Read the Journal online at: www.csalife.com
Autumn’s
Golden Globes
Pumpkin seeds have been found in pre-Columbian cliff
dwellings of the southwest, so it is entirely possible that the
Pilgrim Fathers could have had access to the ingredients for
pumpkin pie. But they didn’t have it, nor did they even list
turkey on the first Thanksgiving menu. They sat down to a
table of venison, wild fowl, eels, mussels, clams, leeks, water
cress and wild plums. It was more than 50 years before
Americans gave annual thanks for pumpkin pie.
Though they may not have appreciated it, New Englanders
are sometimes called pumpkin heads. They are said to have
brought it on themselves by a blue law that required men to
have their hair bobbed to the edge of a cap. Some say that
instead of a cap, a half pumpkin was often used.
New Yorkers in the 1860’s thought it clever to express
admiration for a leading citizen by acknowledging, “He’s a
pumpkin.” Twenty years later Henry Ward Beecher was the
first to denote excellence by the phrase, “It’s some pumpkins.”
The most marvelous pumpkin of all became Cinderella’s
coach. It was probably transformed from a gourd, now considered a squash, a giant type first grown in Asia and Europe.
The pumpkin, like tomatoes, peppers and corn, developed
from a flower. That makes it a fruit, not a vegetable.
The pumpkin got its name from the Greek word “pepon,”
meaning “mellow.” The 10 to 20 pound American field
pumpkin rules it out for magic coaches, but otherwise its performance statistics rate high. A single pumpkin seed in 24.5
weeks of growing time puts out nearly 2,000 feet of vine and
20 pumpkins.
Thanks go to Director Ken Dvorsky for
bringing this magazine to our attention.

How Time
Flies
District Council No. 12 of
Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, and
Indiana - How time flies!
We are now in the 9th month of
2016 – the old Romans called this
time septem (meaning the 7th month
of the Julian calendar year). This is
the time of year when diminished
sunlight hours become noticeable
again. Labor Day is the holiday
when we honor organized labor and
the hardworking women and men of
our country. The Sandwich Fair (the
granddaddy of all Illinois county
fairs) runs from September 7 to the
11. It originated in 1887 and keeps
going year after year. Grandparents
Day is on September 11 – a time to
thank and praise the beloved elders
of our family.
I hope your summer was happy
and relaxing. Friends, family, and
lodge members joined a large gathering of over 100 people at the
Bohemian National Annual Picnic on
July 24. It was a warm, sunny day.
The Czech music was enjoyable and
the picnic food was very delicious.
The Czech American Congress also
held a picnic on August 31 and had
several hundred people in attendance. The James Drnek Orchestra
played a bunch of delightful and
peppy polkas and melodies.
Everyone enjoyed the sausages, hot
dogs, potato pancakes, pastries, etc.
It can truthfully be said that we had a
wonderful afternoon. Many CSA
lodge workers helped serve the food,
drinks, and ice cream. Some helped
clean up around the tents and park
grounds afterwards.
The autumn equinox begins on
September 22. Time to get working
again on “pet projects” and our
National Project activities. It’s that
time to do the things that make us
feel good – it’s time to help others!

We really could use some more people on the Committee. If you are interested,

Hope to see some of you at our next meeting.

Czech Immigration to the
United States
The earliest Czechs in Cleveland settled in the Flats. They preferred to build their
own settlements on the outskirts of the city rather than move into old, existing
neighborhoods because they liked to cultivate small flower and vegetable gardens.
Many of the early immigrants were tailors, shoemakers, masons, stonecutters,
blacksmiths and carpenters. The unskilled Czech immigrants often worked on
farms or made barrels in John D. Rockefeller’s oil refineries.
Czech immigrants of the 1870s and 1880s settled in two areas of the city. The west
side area was just south of Ohio City, but later moved south to W. 41st Street,
between Clark and Denison Avenues. The east side settlement, close to the
Cuyahoga River and Croton Street, also moved out from its roots, toward Quincy
Avenue and E. 80th Street, Buckeye Road, Lower Fleet Avenue and Broadway
Avenue and E. 55th Street.
The Broadway area, from E. 37th to Union Avenue, was known as “Little
Bohemia.” The Broadway section of the city offered easy access to the factories
where some of the men worked. From the late 1870s until the end of World War I,
it was the largest Czech settlement in Cleveland, and also home to the city’s most
prosperous Czechs. It is still home to Bohemian National Hall, Sokol Greater
Cleveland and the Czech Catholic Union.
Still within the city limits, a later Czech settlement was established around E. 131st
Street. After World War I, the Czechs began moving to the suburbs. Maple Heights
was the most important suburban Czech community, but a dozen other suburbs also
saw the influx of a significant number of Czechs.

Kristin Payer, Kropik Scholarship Winner!
Kristin Payer receives the Kropik
scholarship from Candy Papuga
Sis. Kristin Payer, Miss National CSA
2016-17 of Lodge Mile-Hi Czechs No.
432, also won the prestigious Kropik
Scholarship Award. The award was presented by family member, Candy Kropik
Papuga, at Saturday’s Coronation Banquet
at the Get-Together in Memphis. This
award is granted purely for CSA activity.
We wish to thank Candy and Stan Papuga
for their continued generosity in giving
our college members assistance with their
educational goals.
Ever since I was a little girl I was a part
of something bigger than myself. My
grandparents, John and Vera Payer, were
like my second parents. They introduced
me to and got me to be a part of CSA. I
remember going to Bowl-O-Rama, meeting up with other kids from the lodge and
getting to bowl to see who would be the
big winner. Every year when spring time
came around it was something I looked
forward to. We would finally get to go
again and the best part was a couple
weeks after the tournament when I would
get a package in the mail from CSA. Over
the years the prizes consisted of the
coolest things: the coolers, money clips,
flashlights and backpacks. It was the most
exciting thing as a child getting your very
own mail! I participated in the bowling
tournament until the age limit, which is
17. For Christmas, I remember driving
down to St. Bernadette Church eager to
see what this year ’s festivities held.
Everyone would help decorate the
Christmas tree and sometimes we would
make our own ornaments. Mr. Jingles,
Santa’s elf, would come and entertain us.
He did amazing tricks, and I always
remember leaving with an awesome balloon animal and, of course, a present from
Santa. One year I was honored to award
Miss CSA the winning crown. There were
so many activities and events we attended
but my absolute favorite would have to be
the annual Fall Czech Festival. I can
remember those days so clearly, waking
up early with my grandmother and getting
dressed in my kroje while she braided by
hair with colorful ribbons. We would go
and meet my grandfather who had already
been there for a couple hours preparing
all the food. We helped set up all the
tables and the decorations. I loved setting
up the dinner tables with little greeting
cards and tiny bottles of poppy seed!
Finally when the event would start, I
would waltz around dancing, talking to all
the members, and visiting all the amazing
artwork and crafts up for sale. The food;
that was another story! It was delicious
and I would go back for seconds and
maybe even thirds. And every year I
would leave with so many goodies! My
favorite was a beautiful green and grey
knitted scarf and matching hat. Even outside of the lodge’s activities, my grandma
and I would meet up with members to have
lunch, catch up and sometimes make
kolach, a yummy filled pastry. As I’ve
grown up and look back at those times,
I’ve realized how much of an impact CSA
has had on my life. Not only do I have
fond memories to look back on and
remember, I’ve also learned so much and
met the most amazing people. My

A Grateful Graduate
Congrats,
Dear CSA Members far and near,
I again want to thank you for the very generous scholarship money that was Jeremy
awarded to me two years ago. You cannot imagine how grateful I am.
Last summer I was offered an internship at Altorfer Cat Heavy Equipment in
Cedar Rapids. It was very successful and I loved the work. During Christmas
break, Altorfer sent me to their electrical school in Peoria, Illinois. I was then
offered a full-time position with Altorfer as a Building Construction Products Field
Service Technician.
Since then I graduated from Kirkwood Community College this past May. I
majored in Diesel Agriculture Technology, was named the top Diesel Agriculture
Technology student and honored with an Outstanding Student Award. A big heartfelt
thank you to Sis. Marj Nejdl for attending the award ceremony with my family.
I am happy with the progress of my education and employment. Altorfer continues my education at the “Cat” school in Peoria. There I learn about electrical systems, hydraulics and other technical repairs and machine operations.
Thank you to CSA and the Kropik family for the scholarships awarded to me. I
now have the job of my dreams and you have made it possible.

Best Wishes, Father Casey
Lodge Sionilli No. 170 – Brookfield,
Illinois – A well-attended meeting was held
on June 6, 2016, at St. Barbara’s in
Brookfield to say goodbye to our pastor,
Father Robert Casey, who left as of the end
of June to become a pastor at St. Bede’s
parish in Chicago. At the last minute, he
couldn’t attend as his mother had flown in
from Arizona for therapy but unfortunately
passed within a week. Twenty-one of his fellow priests attended the funeral services. Father Casey does have a dad and a sister who is a nun residing in a religious
community in Ireland. Goodbye, Father Casey, and good luck at St. Bede’s!
Our memorial service for ten deceased members was performed by Mildred
Pulturak and Genevieve Misek, our officers. As they lit candles, Mildred read a
lovely poem. Guests included Dolores Maciejewski and Annabelle Biden, whose
brother was a CSA member who has since passed. Rene Weissensel with her
nephew James Weissensel (a former CSA scholarship winner who graduated from
Lewis University this year) were happy to chauffeur members to the meeting.
Following the service, a delicious lunch catered by Rose Zepletal and daughters
was served to Sionilli members and guests. We were happy to see Caroline
Johnston, and told her we will see her at the Cultural Division Holiday Party in
McCook later this year.
Because of the intense hot weather, our officers were unable to attend the GetTogether in Memphis, but I’m sure those attending had a great time as they found
out who is the Fraternalist of the Year and our Queen for 2016-17.
The meeting ended with everyone attending receiving our annual gift of a Vidalia
onion distributed by my grandson, James.

231, Cicero, Illinois – On June 4, 2016,
Jeremy Ryne Riha graduated from
Beloit Memorial High School in Beloit,
Wisconsin. He played on the school’s
tennis team for three years and earned
the team’s Letter for Participation.
Another aspect of his high school
years was being a member of the
school’s “JROTC” Program. As such,
he was active in many events and
enjoyed marching in their “Color
Guard,” for the town’s Memorial Day
Parade. In the fall, he will be attending
Blackhawk Technical College in Beloit.
Jeremy is the grandson of Raymond and
Catherine Riha. His mother is Lisa
Hartman.
At our last lodge meeting, we met
our new CSA Sales Representative, Joel
F. Wordlaw, who gave us a very informative talk on all of the insurance products that CSA has to offer. If you have
any questions about your policies, he
will be happy to assist you. His phone
number is 708-261-8225.
At the end of the meeting, about
eight bags of food were delivered to the

Keeping Busy
Lodge Paramount/Southgate No. 372,
Bedford, Ohio – The Bus Trip on June 22
to The Meadows was a great success and a
fun time was had by all! It was overheard
that this was the best bus trip that somebody had been on, and they go on a lot of
bus trips! The Horse Race was the highlight of the trip and it was neck and neck
between 3, 5 and 6 several times until No. 6
made a mad dash for the finish line and
won, paying coincidently, $6 to the winners. Other games were the $1 and $5
bags and 50/50, which Mary Ann Toncar
won. As always there were a lot of goodies
to eat and drink on the way there and back.
Thank you to Diane DiBianca, Mary Ann
Toncar, and Jan Dembowski for all their
hard work in putting the trip together and to
Linda Vopat for bringing the breakfast
Danish and orange juice that got us started
on the munch fest. Also a thank you to all
who donated the various goodies that were
enjoyed! I’m sure it will be a sell out next
year, too, based on all the positive comments people had made.
The lodge conducted a Baby Naming
Ceremony on August 28 at DTJ Taborville
for Greyson Ehrenbeit. Fran Weiss officiated. Our lodge meeting was held before the
ceremony.
We would love to see more of our members attend our meetings at the Maple
Heights Senior Center, which are scheduled
for September 22, October 27, November
17 and December 15, which will be our
Lodge Christmas Party, place TBA. Please
note new dates and places.

Members Fran Weiss, Maryann Toncar,
Jean Garapic, and Diane DiBianca delivered beautiful crocheted baby blankets,
booties and bonnets, made by Fran, along
with lotions, towels, rattles, and miscellaneous baby items to Laura’s Home. We also
donated a $50 check to the home. Laura’s
Home is a part of City Mission. It is a home
where women in crisis can go. It is a place
of refuge, a place where woman can rebuild
their lives. They provide women and children the basic necessities including food,
safe shelter, and clothing. As they take steps
to rebuild their lives, they also receive work
readiness development, life skills classes,
Christian discipleship, a loving and safe
environment, and true encouragement. As
we spoke to Joy Trachsel, manager of
Laura’s Home, she told us there were about
10 infants presently at the home along with
other children and their moms. She also
explained that no one needs to be homeless
and that there are places to go... Laura’s
Home being one of them. When the women
are ready to leave, they help them find
housing and they have all the skills to succeed. They have plenty of activities for the
children including a Pathways after-school
program. One of the testimonials includes a
female who started drinking at 14 years old
who turned her life around by the encouragement and support classes she was in at
Laura’s Home. She is now living a sober
life with her two children, paying off her
debt, and is looking forward to living independently again. Her words are, “I’m going
to keep rising to the top. I’m strong! They
give you a lot of healing and encouragement.” You can read more stories of healing
and encouragement from Laura’s Home at
www.thecitymission.org/lauras-home.
Eleven members of our lodge attended
the district picnic, and had our meeting
afterward. Members were asked to bring a
baby picture so we could guess who was

who. A donation of gift baskets will be sent
to DTJ for three of their fundraisers. A
donation was also sent to John Wallett to
help him in Eagle Scouts. The American
Diabetes walk is in September and a donation was made to them. We have started
looking at members who are eligible for
their 75 or 50 year pins. If you believe you
are eligible for one, please look at the policy date. If it is dated 1941 or 1965, contact
Diane DiBianca at:

Four members attended the 80th GetTogether in Memphis. A big thanks to
Lauren, Maria, and their committee for a
job well done. Diane DiBianca and Donna
Tesmer helped write letters to the men and
women of the military for the service project. One of the highlights of the weekend
was Beale Street where there was a lot of
dancing in the streets and music of all kinds
coming out of the establishments on Beale.
Memphis cuisine was also one of the highlights. Congratulations to Kristin Payer for
being crowned Miss CSA. Congratulations
also to Wendy Lovell for being named

at Ashford’s Pompey Hollow Park. We
heard “Fiesta Del Norte” and
“Professors of Sweet Sweet Music,”
also known as “POSSM.” Both concerts were very enjoyable.
We held our Annual Picnic on July

enjoyed delectable food, camaraderie
and some fun activities. Thank you to
Brother Bob Zaicek for taking care of
the grill and all his helpers for helping
with the cooking! The potluck salads

happy to see Brother Michael Varga
who made it home in time to join us.
Michael spent several weeks this summer playing baseball in a collegiate
league in Virginia Beach. His team
even won the Championship! He is
already back to college classes.
Sisters Laura Varga-Knowlton and
Marion Varga attended the CSA GetTogether in Memphis. It was a wonderful weekend! We especially enjoyed the
Czech/Slovak music, the Miss CSA contest, the trip to Graceland, and visiting
with all of our CSA friends. Laura and
Marion traveled to Kentucky and North
Carolina to visit relatives and spent
some time in Pigeon Forge at

Keep on Going, Eunice
Lodge Yankee-Jungmann No. 77,
North Riverside, Illinois - I hope that
everyone is enjoying the summer, especially the Farmer’s Markets with all the
fresh vegetables.
Our Lodge nominated Eunice
Semple, who celebrated her 90th birthday on August 20, as CSA Fraternalist
of the Year. Eunice joined our Lodge in
the 80’s and soon became a scribe, writing articles for the CSA Journal for
many years. Next, she was elected
Lodge Secretary and held that position
for many years. Today, she is our
Treasurer and has brought our Lodge
into the new millennium by converting
the manual system on books to banking
electronically. In the past, she has gone
to the Get-Togethers and represented
our Lodge as Parliamentarian. She
researched and prepared a written history of our Lodge.
Eunice keeps a busy schedule with
her community involvement. She is a
Trustee of the Rolling Meadows
Library, working on the Library’s history project. She devotes volunteer hours
leading the Rolling Meadows Seniors
“Fit & Fun” class. Eunice plays the
cello and is a member of the Northwest
Community Symphony Orchestra. They
perform four to five concerts a year.
Eunice is also a member of “Friends
of the Library” and rides her recumbent
tricycle in the July 4th Parade, shown
here with Rolling Meadows Mayor Tom
Rooney.
She easily accounts for 10 to 20
hours of service each month with the
organizations she supports. This kind of
dedication is lacking in our world today.
We need more Eunices!
By the way, she also belongs to a
monthly bowling group. Happy birthday, Eunice, and keep on going girl!

Cleveland, Ohio - We hope you have
been enjoying this summer! We’ve had
lots of sunshine and warm weather here
in the Cleveland area. Our city also
hosted the National Republican
Convention! It was a great success.
We had a very nice turn-out for this
month’s meeting. Sixteen members and
one guest were there. Last month, we
had 13 members attend the meeting and
we sang, “Happy Birthday,” to our
members who had July birthdays, Carol
Cirillo and Elmer Soos. Elmer and June
Karecki provided a lovely lunch in July
and Freddie Shima provided a wonderful lunch for us this month. This month,
we sang, “Happy Birthday,” to Dolores.
Our 50/50 raffle was won by Norma
Rasolette and Jan Russell. The proceeds
from the raffles and from our “donation”
jar go to our National Project, the
Providence House (which cares for children in crisis and provides emergency
shelter for children). Our members
donated children’s clothes, food, paper
supplies, money and gift cards to the
Providence House this and last month.
Please bring children’s items, money or
gift cards for the Providence House to
next month’s meeting. Thank you.

Madison Hamrin, a new graduate of
Oak Forest High School. Madison was
very active during her years in high
school but still maintained a high standard of academic excellence, as indicated by awards that include a Scholar

Lodge’s Oldest Member Celebrates 98 Years!
Lodge Sokol Pilsen No. 434, Oak

met on June 4, 2016. After the lodge
business took place, the members and
guests held a graduation party for sister

high school and is currently checking
colleges that she might attend. Joining
the celebration were two of Nicole’s
cousins, John Diatte who also graduated
from high school, and Daniel Diatte
who graduated from Loyola’s School of
Nursing. It was a great meeting and celebration.
Brother Marco Malusa, after working
two years for Disney World in Orlando,

The month of May saw many of our

activities and various Czech organizations’ functions throughout the
Chicagoland area such as Join Hands
Day at Bohemian National Cemetery
and the Mother’s Day Ceremony at
“The Mother” statue at Bohemian
National Cemetery. Sisters Diane
Yochem and Sheila Kraft attended with
their families. Our members also attended the Memorial Day services at the

other District Council No. 12 lodges. All
of these affairs were well attended
thanks to District Council No. 12 and
the CSA Journal promoting these
events.

Lodge Benjamin Franklin No. 02,
Seven Hills, Ohio - As summer of 2016
fades into fond memory, several events
are worthy of rekindling. June’s perennial rite of passage began with Ken
Burdzinski, Scott Krecow and I volunteering to help work the beer tent at the
Parma Chamber’s “Rib ‘N Rock.” The
four day event found us burning the
midnight oil to keep the guests
refreshed, as the weekend was stifling
hot at the new location of Tri-C
College’s Western Campus. A total of
800 cases of product were sold, with all
tips and monies from the recycled aluminum donated to the National Breast
Cancer Foundation.
The June meeting was well attended
as President Krecow welcomed an emissary of Lodge Paramount/Southgate,
“Wild Bill” Miller. It was great to
socialize with Bill and not have the
noise and backdrop of a bowling alley to
contend with. Our members were still
basking in the euphoria of victory that
the Cavaliers captured only 18 hours
prior.
Hopefully, this puts an end to the socalled curse of Cleveland sports teams
as the Lake Erie Monsters also won a
hockey title in the AHL; the first since
the Barons in 1964.
Mike Cernosky, renowned for his
late and grand entrances, took his celebration to yet a higher level. While we
ordered our refreshments, a loud commotion was suddenly heard outside. Our
waitress rushed over to check if the
vestibule was still attached to the building. As she opened the door, out popped
a red vuvuzela (the horn blown at a soccer game). Behind it was a puckered up
Mike who laid out a blast sounding like
the Monsters had just scored a winning
goal! Needless to say, it woke up the
relaxing clientele. The proprietor came
running out ready to dial 911. Oh, it’s
only McHale. With such a captured
audience, Dave Kus wasted no time taking the floor with his stand up comedy
and animal impressions. What a meeting!
July’s quorum was again well attended, probably awaiting an encore performance. It was not to be. We did, however, welcome the pride of Aurora, Ohio,
Rich Veverka. Rich is usually our chauffer on the Lodge road trips. Hope he
won’t be a stranger.
Coming out of committee and after
much discussion, Ann George’s “Parma
Heights Food Pantry” will continue to
be our National Project for 2016. After
reading a recent front page article in a
community paper, we couldn’t go anywhere else!

were married in Chicago, Illinois on
August 1, 1959. They renewed their
wedding vows on their 25th
Anniversary in San Diego, California in
1984. They renewed vows again on
their 50th Anniversary in San Diego,
California in 2009. Their three children
and eight grandchildren were all part of
their renewal services.
Judy has been a member of Lodge
Woodrow Wilson No. 377 since 1955.

Joe and Jacqui Danek
Lodge Central Star No. 411
Joe and Jacqui Danek, Lodge Central Star
No. 411, were married on August 20, 1960
in Lansing, Michigan, with an evening
reception in Chesaning, Michigan at the
old Easton Hall. After a 38-year banking
career in Michigan, Joe retired in 1996
and they moved to the Carolina Trace
Community in Sanford, North Carolina,
where they have lived ever since. They
have two daughters who, with their families, also live in North Carolina - Denyce
Danek Kolosowsky and Meri Danek
Nociti (a former Miss National CSA). Joe
and Jacqui have seven grandchildren and
two great-granddaughters. While in Michigan, Joe and Jacqui were very involved
in CSA and attended a number of Get-Togethers as well as hosting one in Flint,
Michigan. In retirement, they golf, travel in their motor home (wintering in Florida)
and have a little business, “Creations by Jacqui and Joe,” where they make and sell
bird and butterfly houses as well as hand-painted glassware and gift sets. Keeping
busy keeps one young!

Lodge Happenings
Members Join Hands and Sell Plants, Too
Lodge Rovnost No. 53, Indian Head
Park, Illinois - Chris Lanzel was in
charge of the plant sale at her church, St.
John’s Lutheran Church, and asked for
help from our members. So, on Friday
night Joyce Nemec, Marvin Lanzel,
Kenneth Johnston and Caroline
Johnston (taking the picture) were there
to help. Then on Saturday while the rest
of us were at Join Hands Day, Kurt and
Karen Nelson came to help her out.
According to Chris’s report, the sale was
very successful.
Join Hands Day is over and Joyce
Nemec, Caroline Johnston, Kenneth
Johnston and Marvin Lanzel were at
Bohemian National Cemetery to help
clean up the gate house, the columbarium and the grounds. It was a cold,
windy day but we stayed and worked
hard to clean it up so that on Mother’s
Day, and every day, it looked good.
We want to congratulate our members for working extra hard last year so
that we could win the Gold Award. We
are hoping we can do the same this year.
Summer Full of Adventures
Lodge R. T. Crane Jr. No. 7, North
Riverside, Illinois - Lodge Crane has
had an exciting summer full of adventures! In June, we celebrated receiving
our first Lodge Recognition Program
‘Platinum’ award by enjoying a delicious steak dinner cooked by Sis. Vera
Wilt. In July, Sis. Blanche Hobart went
to Norway for a 21-day cruise. She had
hoped to see the midnight sun but unfortunately it was rainy and overcast.
Luckily, Blanche was able to see the
midnight sun when she visited back in
2013. Otherwise, she had a very pleasant trip! At the end of July, Lodge Crane
members volunteered at the annual
Czech American Congress Picnic by
selling grilled corn. This is one of our
favorite activities to do each year. It was
a beautiful day with great food, drinks,
and friends.
At the beginning of August, Lodge
Crane members from the Stupka family
Like us on Facebook
and the Wilt family traveled to
Memphis, Tennessee for the 80th
Annual CSA Get-Together. Everyone
had a blast exploring Beale Street, sampling some delicious barbecue, and visiting Graceland, the home of Elvis
Presley. We would like to thank Sis.
Our treasurer Caroline Johnston was
there to accept the award and we plan to
do a lot with this money. It has not been
decided as of yet where we will donate
it.
Fraternally, Caroline Johnston
Lauren Wilt of Lodge Crane for cochairing this unforgettable event with
Sis. Maria Breidenbach from St. Louis.
We are already looking forward to busting out our cowboy boots at the GetTogether next year in Austin, Texas!
Fraternally,
Alix Wilt

Lodge Estlian No. 404, Fairview
Heights, Illinois - Greetings to all!
The summer has gone quickly and the
heat is bound to slow down eventually. I
hope everyone has had many good times
and that some happy memories were
made.
I am sure many good times and
happy memories were made at President
Mike Kupinski’s July summer party.
Each year Mike hosts a gathering of
friends and fellow lodge members (250
attending this year) at his Illinois Lake
Lot in Hillsboro. There was boating,
swimming, a volleyball court, a band,
and other outside games along with
great food. An out-of-this-world fireworks show topped off the evening (I
think we heard the oohs and aahs all the
way here in Illinois). One of our members summed the evening up by saying,
“the fireworks were fantastic, the food
was good and all had a great time.”
Thank you, Mike, for hosting this special event.
Jessica Fowler, daughter of Jennifer
and Larry Fowler and granddaughter of
lodge secretary Sandy Haney, was
awarded a one-time grant of $2,000
from the “Blanche and Violet Dvorak
Endowment Fund for Advanced
Studies” administered through CSA
Fraternal Life. Jessica will be doing her
graduate studies at SIU in Edwardsville
this fall. Lydia Braun also received an
award of $1,250 from the 2016 CSA
Scholarship Program for the St. Louis
College of Pharmacy and Sarah S.
Braun was granted a scholarship award
for $1,500 to Missouri State University.
Best wishes, members! We’re proud of
you!
The Memphis Get-Together was
attended by several members who visited Elvis’ home and grounds, walked
Beale Street (for $10 per person…can
you imagine! It must be paved in gold.)
and loved Bass Pro with its pyramid of
animals and boats in the water. Next
year’s Get-Together will be held in
Austin, Texas.
Our biggest news is the ordination of
Belleville Dioceses’ newest priest. His
name is Brett Judkins and he is the first
priest ordained in the Belleville diocese
since 2012. Why is this news?
Because Brett is a CSA member and the
son of Paul and Kathleen Judkins. He is
a Collinsville hometown boy whose
home parish is St. Stevens Church in
Caseyville. Now 29, he stated that at
age five he first thought of becoming a
priest and used to play “mass” as a
child. He was ordained by Bishop

Our newest member, Lucy Kupinski,
is doing wonderful according to her

Soon there will be a new couple in

She is reported to be an excellent musician when playing the violin. Hmm…

Lodge Happenings
Fourth Virginia Czech-Slovak Folklife Festival
Lodge Virginia No. 230, Colonial
Heights, Virginia - The recipient for
this year’s Lodge Virginia National
Project will be St. Joseph’s Outreach in
Petersburg, Virginia. St. Joseph’s
Outreach program is affiliated with the
Downtown Churches United in
Petersburg, which handles food distribution for those in need. Lodge Virginia
will also be contributing to ADRA
Belarus to help with charitable activities
throughout Belarus. ADRA Belarus is
involved with such activities as programs for special-needs children and
construction projects for the elderly.
At the end of June, the Czech
Embassy Cultural Attaché, Dr. Robert
Rehák, spoke at the Prince George
Regional Heritage Center on the topic of
“The Magic of Prague: Life and
Legends of Czechs and Jews in the
Heart of Europe.” Dr. Rehák was a participant in the Velvet Revolution,
which led to the independence of
Czechoslovakia from the rule of the former Soviet Union. The difference
between life during the time of Soviet
control and life in an independent
Czechoslovakia, later to be split into
Slovakia and the Czech Republic
(Czechia), was emphasized throughout
Dr. Rehák’s speech. Lodge members in
attendance were Mary Zahradka, Jim
Zahradka, Virginia Duncan, and Emily
Cerny.
On October 15, the Fourth Virginia
Czech-Slovak Folklife Festival will be
held at the Prince George Regional
Heritage Center. This has been very
successful in the past and has been
increasing in popularity with each festival. Once again, Lodge Virginia No.
230 will be a participant at the Festival.
The Annual Meeting will be held on
November 13 at 1 p.m. at the Colonial
Italian Restaurant, 1 Dunlop Circle,
Colonial Heights, VA 23834.

Lodge Kruh Osvojenych Zen a Panu
No. 121, Dillonvale, Ohio – It’s hard to
believe, but another successful CSA
Get-Together is now history. It always
amazes me how something you look for-
ward to for so long can come and go so
quickly!
My husband, Gary, and I enjoyed a
weekend full of blues, brew, and barbecue fun! Our nightly strolls down Beale
Street yielded much excitement in the
way of live music. Some highlights
included listening to: an alternative
blues/rock band at the Hard Rock Cafe,
a modern blues/contemporary band at
B.B. Kings, and an old style blues/jazz
band at the Tap Room. The sounds of
“dueling pianos” at Silky O’Sullivan’s
got me moving along with the help of a
two-foot tall strawberry daiquiri (Oh
my!). There were also many sounds
(and sights!) to behold at the Jerry Lee
Lewis and Coyote Ugly establishments.
For me, my personal “music favorite” of
the weekend was listening to the sounds
of “The St. Louis Express” at our
evening dinners. The traditional Czech
sound and beautiful singing brought
back childhood memories of my hometown “Czech Days” celebrations as well
as my grandfather’s Czech Band.
In addition to the music of Memphis,
the food proved to be a definite high
point as well. Gary, Amanda, and I
enjoyed a delicious meal of “dry rub”
ribs at Charles Vergos’ Rendezvous
Restaurant. The friendly staff made us
feel welcome as we watched them make
the ribs and encouraged us to come back
for more! Gary also made friends with
some of the hotel staff who suggested a
visit to Gus’s Chicken. Needless to say,
we ate two meals there and my husband
is now the self-proclaimed, non-paid
spokesman for the establishment. He
spent the weekend encouraging others to
try Gus’s Chicken claiming, “It’s the
best chicken I ever had in my entire
life!”
Additional highlights also included:
visiting Graceland, the home of Elvis;
writing letters to veterans; watching the
Queen Contest (our five contestants
were adorable and all very pleasant,
energetic, and intelligent young ladies!);
and crowning of our new Miss National
CSA, Miss Kristin Payer of Lodge MileHi Czechs No. 432. Congratulations to
you, Kristin! Enjoy the upcoming year
representing CSA! Special thanks to
Sisters Lauren Wilt and Maria
Breidenbach for hosting this year’s
event along with Adam, Leslie, and
Marla who gave additional support. We
appreciate your dedication to our society.
As always, the biggest highlight was
getting together once again with our
CSA brothers and sisters representing
many different lodges in our country. All
of you are what make each and every
Get-Together special!

Sis. Wendy Kurtz Lovell
