NURIOOTPA HIGH SCHOOL Tradition—Relationships—Excellence P - 8562 2022 F - 8562 1029 E - [email protected] W - www.nurihs.sa.edu.au FROM THE PRINCIPAL YEAR 8 INFORMATION NIGHT A very successful information and meet the teacher night was held on Monday evening, February 22. Parents and carers were provided with details about many aspects of the school and were able to meet their child’s Home Group teacher. It was great to see so many new families (and some regulars!) which enables us to establish strong relationships as we share the journey of secondary education. STUDENT ID AND BUS TAGS School photos have been completed and students now have access to their student ID cards. These are important cards for use to borrow books, sign in and out, access public transport and now to record travel on school buses. As we change to the new bus system students will no longer require a bus tag to travel. All things will be included on the one card so it is vital that this is well cared for. Replacement ID cards can be arranged. The cost is $10 and payable to the Finance Office. SPORTS DAY Preparations are well underway for the annual Sports Day to be held on Friday March 18. Students have the opportunity to compete in a wide range of athletic events and many novelty activities. We encourage students to take the opportunity to be involved to help make the day very successful. If there are any parents able to help out before or during the day as officials or on food stalls please contact the school. We are looking forward to another exciting event. CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY The assembly to celebrate achievements of the class of 2015 was conducted on February 26. This was an opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding work of many students from last year. It is a wonderful time to hear from past students about their advice and plans for the future. Congratulations again to our class of 2015 and thanks to Ms Reichstein and her team in organising the event. A report of the day is included in the newsletter. BLUE GUMS WOODLAND DEVELOPMENT Students from Mr Conway’s senior class are heavily involved with the planning and development of our woodlands on the northern border of the school. This is a very important natural resource and in conjunction with Mr Chris Hall from NRM we are working to provide a trail and natural amphitheatre to further access this outstanding resource. Community support has already been very strong in regard to materials and volunteer help. If you would like more information or to be involved in the project, please contact Mr Conway at the school. Further details will be provided as we make progress with the project. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the functioning of the school including policy, fund raising and strategic planning. Please consider nominating for the Governing Council or one of its sub-committees to be part of a dynamic team. (please return form to Front Office before AGM) GOVERNING COUNCIL AGM TO BE HELD ON THURSDAY 31 MARCH AT 7:00PM IN THE LOTE BUILDING ALL WELCOME The SRC have had a busy start to 2016, with a smaller group of students we are all keen for the year ahead. The first week of school involved a lot of forward planning for the year including Non-Uniform days, fundraising ideas and events such as Sports Day. We held our first Non-Uniform Day on Friday 19 February. As per last year we have decided to hold two non-uniform days each term, with one themed and one non-themed. Funds raised will go towards shelter and seating around the school. Our Week 9 Non-Uniform Day funds will be donated to the McGrath Foundation. We will be working with Mr. Brad West to hold a ‘Pink Stumps Day’ to promote this charity. Our first event for this year was a Valentine’s Day stall. Here we sold chocolates, roses, song dedications and messages. Money raised from Valentine’s Day was used to purchase one CFS Red Balloon for each home group, which were tied onto the school’s front fence in honour of CFS’s Red Balloon Day. This was held during ECA of Monday 29 February, being the last day of summer. We also held our schools Clean Up Australia Day on the Friday 4th March as an extended yard clean up. This year we will be holding a World’s Greatest Shave event here at Nuriootpa High School, this will be held at the school on Thursday 24th March. Ryland Kungel will be shaving his luscious locks for a great cause. Any other students who would like to be involved, please come and see us in Room 2 as soon as possible so that this can be organised. Sports Day is our largest event for the year. Due to the smaller number of students in SRC we are asking for parent and/or student helpers for this year’s Sports Day BBQ. If you are free on the day, Friday 18th March, your help would be greatly appreciated! We are looking forward to a great year. Artist, Scott Rathman mentored students through a series of questions that included; ‘What makes the Barossa special?’ ‘What does the word Tanunda mean?’ and ‘What are the colours of the Barossa?’ After a brainstorming of ideas, students used pencil and texta to draw their design concepts on paper. The student designs will be painted by Artist Scott Rathman onto 5 panels that will be affixed externally to the brick columns of the Tanunda Post Office to form a unique mural. The project will coincide with National Youth Week, 8 -17th April, 2016. Natalie Axo (AET) Parents/caregivers are invited to inspect the 2 options of a zip jacket that are displayed in the library foyer. Week …, …………...2011 Newsletter No. 2, Term 1 Week 6, 11 March 2016 Page 4 Page 4 Earlier this term a group of keen students converged on the shores of West Lakes for the annual Schools’ State Triathlon Championships. As a school that began competing in this event only a few years ago, it’s encouraging to see a growing enthusiasm for the sport, which involved athletes individually doing all three legs in their race (swim/ride/run) or in a team completing one of the legs. For a small group it was a very early start to be ready for the morning races - the State Triathlon Championships or the Come ‘n Try. Their efforts were rewarded with some fantastic results: 4th Jez McLennan (Intermediate Boys State Triathlon) 5th Lee Sutton (Senior Boys State Triathlon) 19th Will McBride (Junior Boys State Triathlon) It was a lot tougher this year in the Team’s events, with our best result coming from the Senior Mixed Teams which finished a fantastic 4th (Jess Hahn, Simon Furnell & Tom Martin) and a respectable 12th (Ruby McLennan, Lee Sutton & Claudia Cope). In other results, the Senior Boys Team results were: 7th (Jez McLennan, Cooper Dahms & Ryan Hoklas) Intermediate Boys Team results: 16th (Jayten Davis, Jack Riethmuller & Isaac Feltus) Overall, NHS finished an encouraging 14th from 28 teams. I would like to acknowledge the excellent support, encouragement and transport assistance from our families: Sandy Hahn, Jon Martin, Mark Davis, Debbie Feltus & Ruby McLennan. Without their assistance we would have all been exhausted just getting down there (running/riding)!! Yours in sport, Peter Welford Triathlon Team Manager Newsletter No. …., Term .. Their vintage commenced with the crushing and pressing of Chardonnay grapes provided by Marcus Schulz. The resultant juice was transferred to Wolf Blass for cold fermentation to be carried out under the care of Clare Day. This was followed by the harvest of the dry grown shiraz from the Hickinbotham Estate block on Research Rd. Nuriootpa High also sources a tonne of dry grown A grade Shiraz from Ebenezer which is used to create the flagship Barossa Class Shiraz. Last Thursday Darren Chapman mechanically harvested our school shiraz – approximately 4 tonnes worth which was then crushed for fermentation on site. At the same time some students were pressing the previous week’s Barossa Class ferments. It was a busy day. It was great to see the dedicated involvement of the students in the Wine Making program. They take on board an appreciation of the fact they are involved in the making of a food product and the consequent requirement for high levels of hygiene and responsible performance of the various tasks required to produce the finished product. We would like to convey our congratulations to Steve Lienert on being awarded wine maker of the year at the recent vintage launch. Steve has been our mentor and consultant supporting our red wine making efforts for many years. His support and advice have been very much appreciated. Nurihannam Wines have a reputation for exceptional quality and this has been confirmed by results at both the Barossa Wine Show and the National Schools Wine Show which is judged by the same panel of judges who judge the annual Royal Adelaide Wine Show. A full list of our wines for sale is available on our website and per favour of Cellarmasters our wines can be shipped Australia wide if you are looking for a unique gift for family or friends. The competition, organised by the “Australian Wood Review” magazine for the second year running and sponsored by major woodworking companies and woodworking guilds, attracted 70 entries from Year 11 and 12 students from around Australia. There were six categories that students could enter. The four students from Nuriootpa High School were: Kelly Linke, a Year 12 who created a cocktail bar with a solid Red Gum slab top. Cadell Canute, a Year 11 who created a Langstroth beehive with hand cut joints. Christina Tait, a Year 11 who created a bedside cabinet where all joints were at an angle. Cedric Le Brun Costes, a Year 11 who created a turned wine table on the wood lathe. All four students did an excellent job with producing their pieces. Two students achieved places within their categories. Kelly achieved a third place in the “Most Popular” category. Cedric achieved a second place in “Best Turned Piece.” All student entries can be viewed at http://www.woodreview.com.au/student-awards/student-entries-2015. The information for the 2016 student awards will be available in the coming months and I encourage all year 11 and 12 students to consider submitting their woodwork in this nationally recognized competition. David Vaughan - Woodwork Teacher Left - Kelly’s Cocktail Bar Right - Cedric’s Turned Wine Table This week a letter went out to all Year 8 and Year 9 students inviting them to go on the Canberra trip from Sunday 25 September to 29 September. Expressions of interest by parents/caregivers for their students to attend will need to be made by providing the consent form with a $200 deposit to the Finance Office, as soon as possible so that the student’s name can be put on the list. The first 40 names received will be considered for the trip. Names after 40 will be put on to a waiting list. Jenny Howard - Coordinator of Canberra Trip Newsletter No. …., Term ..
