Police Pledge Adequate Security for Returning Students
The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police has pledged adequate security for students
and staff of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko even as the Institution is set to
resume normal academic work on Monday this week.
It will be recalled that the Institution was shut following a violent students’ protest that
rocked the campus and the host community after a student was killed in April this year by
a speeding motorcyclist outside the campus.
The Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harisson, who gave the assurance during a
courtesy visit to the University, assured the returning students of adequate safety, but
counselled them to be law-abiding. She said they should resume with the mind of facing
their primary reason for being in the University.
Mrs. Ibifuro-Harisson said, “Returning students must learn to be law-abiding. They should
come back to face their academic work, while we will make all efforts to flush out those
who are not students among them who want to infiltrate the ranks of the good students
and create chaos.
“The law-abiding students should rest assured that they will be safe as men of the Nigeria
Police and the University security will work together to ensure their safety.”
In his remark, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Igbekele Amos Ajibefun, said that Management
was committed to positioning the University among the best globally and vowed that
criminal elements masquerading as students would not be awarded the University’s
certificate.
He also thanked the Police for what he called its promptness, professional advice and
guidance in quelling the students’ protest.
He said, “We are aware of what happened in other towns and places where some students
lost their lives while protesting. But with your experience and counsel, such was avoided
here. We assure you that the University will continue to collaborate with the police to
ensure that peace reigns.
“We’ve been able to forge partnership with other universities across the globe to ensure
we take AAUA to higher levels and ensure we make our students globally competitive. We
will continue to do that, but the University will not allow criminals to take our certificate
so that the name of the University is not tarnished. The Senate met and decided that they
would be called back by May 16.”
The meeting was attended by all the Principal Officers and some Top Officers of the
University.
Reparation Fee Slashing: Student Union Leadership Hails
Visitor, Management
The Management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, has acceded to
intervention from the Visitor to the University, Governor Olusegun Mimiko, well-meaning
Nigerians and stakeholders as it slashed the reparation fee to be paid by returning
students from N25, 000 to N15, 000.
The reparation fee was imposed following the violent and destructive demonstration
embarked on by the students who were protesting the death of one of them who was
knocked down by a speeding motorcyclist outside the campus on April 9, 2016.
In a statement signed by the Student Union President and Student Union Senate President,
Adegbola Odunyemi and Balogun Olakunle, respectively, the student body expressed
appreciation to the Management for heeding the call from various quarters, including the
student union, to reduce the fee.
The Student Union Leadership said, “On behalf of the entire students of Adekunle Ajasin
University, the Leadership of the Student Union of the University would like to express
deep appreciation to the people’s Governor and Visitor to the University, Dr. Olusegun
Mimiko, and all well-meaning personalities in and outside Ondo State for their
intervention in the reparation fee, which has been slashed to N15, 000 from the N25, 000
earlier charged by the University authorities.
“We would also like to thank the Management of the University for their Magnanimity and
understanding.
“We appeal to our fellow students to be law-abiding and to go about their academic
activities peacefully.
“We would like to pledge the solidarity of the entire students to the Management in its
efforts to build a sustainable 21 st Century University, properly called!”
In a statement, the Acting Registrar, Mr. Sunday Ayeerun, had earlier said the
Management took the decision “after due consideration of passionate pleas by
well-meaning Nigerians and, most especially, the leadership of the Students’ Union of the
University, who demonstrated a high level of maturity and responsibility.
“Consequently, all students are requested to pay the N15, 000 reparation via e-Transact in
any branch of Skye Bank PLC, First Bank PLC, Access Bank PLC, Stanbic IBTC, Wema Bank,
Zenith Bank, or Heritage Bank immediately and present evidence of payment and a copy
of sworn Affidavit to be of good behavior at the Faculty Office to obtain Clearance
Certificate from Monday, May 16 to Friday, May 20, 2016.
“Students should visit the University website for further payment procedure and
resumption formalities.
“Students are to also note that suspended examinations shall commence on Monday, May
23, 2016 and end on June 4, 2016 while the Second Semester shall commence on Monday,
June 12, 2016.
“All students are enjoined to take advantage of Management’s kind gesture and conduct
themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner.”
AAUA to Partner Competent Educational Bodies
Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria, has restated its
commitment to partnering with qualified and competent educational bodies in imparting
knowledge and bringing quality education to as many Nigerians as possible.
This was made known on Wednesday when officials of the Institute of Continuing
Education, Benin-City, Edo State came to the University to seek renewal and strengthening
of the working relationship between the two institutions in the training of students in
education-related courses.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Oluyemisi Adebowale, who represented the
Vice Chancellor, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, said that AAUA would consider a working
relationship with interested educational bodies that meet its standard.
Prof. Adebowale however told the visitors that there were grey areas to be ironed out in
the relationship. She said efforts would be made to tidy up some aspects to ensure that
the release of results and issuance of certificates were not delayed unnecessarily.
The DVC said, “Your request is noted, and we will pass the information to our Vice
Chancellor. We have listened to you and we know you are interested. We are equally
interested, but you will need to do a formal letter of request. And then we will look at it.
“And there might be a need to sign a new MoU as our terms are likely to change because
of the times we are in. I’m of the opinion that with the relationship we had in the past, we
won’t have any difficulty in wanting to go further.”
Speaking earlier, the Rector of the Institute, Mr. Victor Ajagun, had lauded what he called
the sparkling image of AAUA and the excellence it represents. He said these have made
the University the preferred choice.
“We’ve never had a partnership as good as the one with AAUA. And we are a careful
organization as we leave nothing to chance in ensuring that we follow laid-down rules. To
us, it’s either the best or nothing. We are hoping to start admission anytime you give us
the green light.
“Many of our people have been asking when we would start admission. That shows they
are ready and willing to come,” he said.
Other officials of the Institute who accompanied the Rector, are the Coordinator, Mrs.
Patience Uduigwome; Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bashir Kadiri; and Internal Auditor, Mr.
David Eshiemogie.
Other AAUA officials in attendance were the DVC (Administration), Prof Francis Oyebade;

Dr. Kayode Afolabi; Associate Director, Institute of Education, Dr. Jude Komolafe; and
