Sequoit Signal
Dear Sequoits,
On January 21nd, ACHS hosted the 8th Grade Open House, welcoming the Class of
2020. Prospective students and parents/guardians benefitted from learning
about the many clubs, activities, athletics and other opportunities to become involved in ACHS. The evening’s program also provided critical information on academic placements, student engagement, scheduling and other necessary tips to
ensure a smooth transition into high school.
The North and South Gyms, as well as the Student Commons were buzzing with
excitement, while current students showcased their many talents and future students explored the different clubs and activities. We are excited to open the
doors to the next generation of Sequoits!
Go Sequoits!!!

Sequoit Wellness Challenge
The 2nd annual Sequoit Wellness Challenge starts on February 1. This six-week challenge
is designed to promote wellness among students and staff at Antioch.
Throughout the challenge, we’ll focus on leading a balanced life
by completing activities in four areas:
 physical wellness
 social wellness
Cum Laude:
Parents: Encourage your senior student to strive for Cum Laude honors at
Graduation!
Seniors: Will you meet every Cum Laude criteria, except Volunteerism?
Many students will have every criteria covered with the exception of Volunteerism. If you are unsure where to go to volunteer, see Assistant Principal
Rodriguez, in Student Services, for possible volunteer options at ACHS. Some
great possibilities within the community would be your local church, community center, or non-profit organizations. Volunteering with the elderly, young
children or even a local animal shelter all count, as long as it is documented!
Pick up a volunteerism form in the ACHS Main Office, or click on the Cum
Laude icon on our website, and print the form.
You can check your (student’s) current Cum Laude status in your Infinite
Campus Portal.
SCHOLARSHIP = 26 credits
CHARACTER = o suspensions
VOLUNTEERISM = 40 hours
RESPONSIBILITY = average daily attendance of at least 95%
EXCELLENCE = 3 Capstone classes
PRIDE = 4 extracurricular activities/clubs

Tech Ed & STEM
At first glance, the curriculum topics in Mr. Salaban’s Technology Education (Tech Ed)
classes seem to be traditional. For instance, woodworking, drafting, and electricity are
some of the topics. However, over the last several years, great effort has gone into making sure students are doing much more than swinging hammers, sketching on paper,
and wiring electrical outlets.
Tech Ed instructor Mr. Salaban includes STEM activities in all his Tech Ed classes. STEM is
an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education. STEM is a movement that began in the 1990s and is an interdisciplinary approach to education that includes teaching all the aforementioned topics. STEM also focuses on hands-on, problem-based learning. STEM makes learning fun while preparing students for real-world
jobs.
Tech Ed students complete many STEM activities in these classes. The activities are rigorous and require students to research, problem-solve, test, and reflect. In Wood Tech
class, for example, students program laser cutters to automatically cut intricate wooden
pieces. In Small Engines class, students design and 3D print their own hand tools. In
Electronics class, students lay out custom circuit boards and create them using laser engravers. All these activities include lessons on science, technology, engineering, and
math.
Creating STEM activities can be a daunting task - but Mr. Salaban says he loves every
minute of it and he wouldn’t want to teach any other way. The Tech Ed students are
very inquisitive and are always challenging Mr. Salaban to create innovative activities in
class. Some of his best ideas come from his students!

English
The English department is getting into high gear in preparation for Writer's Week
(March 29-April 1). As we put the finishing touches on speakers, plan workshops, and
figure out all the logistics, this year looks to be an exciting time. Some of the favorites from last year will reappear along with some new and exciting writers. Check out
the website for dates and times of the presenters and workshops: http://
www.achswritersweek.com. If you have any questions, English teacher Ms. Giertych is
the point person for the event.
On Monday, Feb. 1, we will be inducting 17 students into the National English Honor
Society (NEHS) with a breakfast ceremony for the students and their parents. Congratulations to the following inductees: Brittany Bluthardt, Lauren Bluthardt, Gracie
Bouker, Emily Bronswick, Alexandra Comer, Desiree Davis, Kristina Esdale, Samual
Gunther, Lauryn Hugener, Andi Leineberg, Dan Meade, Chloe Moritz, Miranda Morrow, Haley Nickles, Madison Paddock, Andrew Pimpo, Megan Resurreccion.
Mathematics
The English, Math and Science departments are glad to see that The Learning Center
is helpful to students. As of January 27th, there have been 518 visits to the Learning
Center during the lunch periods. If a student has not yet sought out this great opportunity, it is available during all lunch periods in room 167 for Math & Science and
in room 271 for English.
Career and Technology
On Thursday January 21st ACHS welcomed the class of 2020. The Family & Consumer
Science department had an open house where students were able to check out all
the wonderful the "hands-on" options. They toured the foods lab where students/
parents were welcomed with chocolate chip cookies baked by FCCLA. The apparel area had a programmable embroidery machine set up. The preschool room featured
seniors Taiya Watson and Kylie Fleming explaining the activities and learning that
goes on. During the open house Mrs. Tielke saw six graduated Little Sequoit Preschoolers who will be incoming freshman. Outside the preschool room is a Little Sequoit Alumni wall. Take a peek.

AP Testing Information
Taking the Advanced Placement exams is an important part of all AP courses. Antioch Community
High School desires that all students take AP exams for the AP classes that they have taken. Scoring well on an AP exam can often earn students college credit for their high school class, saving a
significant amount on tuition. Please consult www.collegeboard.org to confirm course credit and
placement for individual colleges and universities.
For the 2016 AP exams, students at Antioch Community High School will be registering online.
This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet
access.
This year each AP exam costs $92.00. Antioch Community High School desires that every student
be able to take their AP exams. The cost per exam for students that currently qualify for the free
or reduced lunch program is $12.00. Students requiring financial assistance should contact Mr.
Kirk Langenkamp, or see him in the Student Services Office to learn more.
Online Exam registration will begin on Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 a.m and end on Friday,
March 4th at 3:00 p.m. Late registration will begin on March 4th at 3:01 p.m. and will end on
April 14th at 3:00 p.m. An additional fee of $55.00 will be assessed during this late registration
period. Exams ordered after April 15th at 3:01 p.m. must qualify for alternative testing using
guidelines established by College Board as well as meeting with Mr. Langenkamp.
In order to register, students should click on the link provided on the school website or visit
www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/140070. To complete registration, students must answer all of the
required questions. Registration is not complete until students have submitted their registration
and confirmation of payment has been received. We know that parents/guardians may desire to
register their students for exams. We strongly recommend that parents and students are both
present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered. Please be sure to have a
credit card available before beginning registration. Payments may also be made by cash or check.
Students or parents may see Mrs. Vicky Rundle in the main office to arrange this.
Antioch Community High School will offer families the convenience of paying exam fees online at
the time of registration. Please be sure to have a credit card available before beginning registration.
Important dates for the registration process to note:
● Tuesday, January 19th at 7:00 AM Registration begins
● Friday, March 4h at 3:00 PM Registration closes
● Registrations after March 4th must be made in person with Mr. Langenkamp● Registrations after
March 4th April 10th at 3:00 p.m. will be assessed a $55.00 one time fee
 Students must report on time to assigned location, as the test will not be delayed per CollegeBoard regulations. CollegeBoard designates specific test times. Such times do not adhere
to the District 117 school day hours. Transportation will not be provided to students whose
test ends after the late bus. Please plan accordingly. Please contact Mr. Kirk Langenkamp,
[email protected], if you would like to register for an exam not listed or have any
questions. Mr. Langenkamp can also be contacted at 847-838-7688.

Applying for Financial Aid
1. Go to www.pin.ed.gov and register for a pin number. This will allow you to electronically
sign your FAFSA.
2. **The student and one of the parents must get a pin number before filing the FAFSA. You
will need your 2015 income tax return information in order to file accurately. **You can file
using your 2014 income tax return information, but you’ll have to do corrections when
you’ve completed filing your 2015 return.
3. When you’re ready, fill out the 2016-2017 FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Helpful Tips





You can’t apply for financial aid for the 2016-2017 school year until January 1, 2016.
Apply as early as possible, preferably before February 1. The money does run out!
Send the FAFSA to every school that you sent an application to.
Check to see if the schools you applied to have their own separate financial aid application.
If they do, fill that out, also.
Double-check the FAFSA before you click ‘Submit’.
ISAC Resources
 FSA ID Webinars are offered throughout the year to help students, parents, and professionals be-
