Surprisingly, there’s actually a lot to admire about the lowly
cockroach. Come along with Tidbits as we step on them anyway.
A SUCCESS STORY
• In Spanish, “cuco” or “cuca” means caterpillar, and “acha” means
“contemptible” which combine to form “cucaracha,” or cockroach.
According to the book “The Compleat Cockroach” by David Gordon,
this widely reviled insect is one of the most successful species ever
to walk the earth.
• Roaches first appeared on the scene some 340 million years ago,
which was 180 million years before dinosaurs appeared; 200 million
years before flowers, seeds, nuts, and pollen showed up on Earth;
and some 338 million years before Homo erectus began walking
around. Except for minor adaptations, their design has remained
nearly unchanged throughout the eons.
• There are about 3,500 species of cockroach, though scientists are
still discovering new ones. About 50 types of roach are considered
to be domestic pests. Of those 50, only five show up regularly in
American homes, and all five of those are not native to the U.S. but
were imported accidentally.
• Unlike flies and mosquitoes, cockroaches are not known to spread
disease.
A PLANETARY PEST
• Warm climates and tropical countries are home to the most species
of cockroach. Cold places have the least. Florida is the roach capital
of the U.S. with 27 different species, and Texas comes in second with
15. Compare this to Costa Rica with over 150 kinds. Most of Canada
is roach-free, with the exception of some large metropolitan areas.
The states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming have no native species
of roach.
• According to records kept by the makers of cockroach control
products, people who live in Los Angeles buy the most insecticides,
followed by New York City, Houston, Miami, and Dallas. Roaches live
in volcanic steam vents of Alaska 2,000 feet (610 m) underground,
and in coal mines in England.
• In 1969 a worker preparing the Apollo XII command module Yankee
Clipper for liftoff saw one inside the capsule. No one ever knew what
became of the bug. It might have traveled all the way to the Moon.
• One of the largest roach species comes from Colombia and is just
under 4 inches (10 cm) long. The heaviest comes from Australia and
weighs about as much as an AA battery. One of the smallest species
is about the size of half a peppercorn and it lives alongside social
insects such as ants, bees, wasps, and termites, living off their food
stores evidently in exchange for keeping the area clean.
THE HEADLESS WONDER
• The cockroach has a collection of nerve cells resembling a
primitive brain in its head and also in its tail. The two nerve
centers are connected and help the insect react quickly when
disturbed. However, they are able to operate separately from
each other. Because of this, cockroaches can live for weeks after
being decapitated, eventually dying of dehydration or starvation.
(continued)
• One scientist suspended cockroaches over a salt solution. If a roach
extended its leg it would get wet, which completed an electrical
circuit, delivering a shock to the bug. It took the cockroaches about
half an hour to learn to keep their legs up to avoid the shock. The
researcher then tried the experiment using decapitated cockroaches
and found they were able to learn just as quickly.
• A test performed in 1957 showed that female roaches with access
to water but no food could live 42 days before dying of starvation.
Those given no food and no water lived two to three weeks.
Thus, they are ideally suited for travelling and can be shut up for

Amazing Animals
WORMS
• Worldwide, there are about 6,000 species of worms. Of
those, 180 live in North America. A third of those are
invasive species, including the popular night crawler.
• In areas that were covered by glaciers during the last ice
age, all worm life was eliminated. When the glaciers
melted, the northern forests evolved in an ecosystem
devoid of worms. When worms were introduced, either
by well-meaning gardeners, as ballast in ships, or in
root balls of imported plants, the ecological balance
was thrown off.
• Worms eat and digest duff, the slowly rotting top
layer of dead leaves that the trees depend on, making
nutrients harder for the tree to acquire. When the duff
has been digested, all that remains is the hardened
soil layer underneath which sapling tree roots cannot
penetrate. Insects and other small creatures whose
lifecycles revolve around duff are stressed by the loss.
Worm holes allow rainwater to flow away faster instead
of retaining the moisture. In some places, oak forests
were subsequently overrun by buckthorn and barberry
due to the arrival of the worms and the loss of the duff.
• In other areas where glaciation did not scrape the soil
away and kill off all worms, worms evolved along with
the ecosystem. In these places they provide invaluable
services: they “plow” the soil, loosening it and creating
channels where tree roots can grow, where oxygen
can flow, and where water can percolate. They mix
nutrients in, making the soil more fertile. Worm poop,
called “castings” has a higher level of nutrients than
normal dirt.
• Aristotle called worms “the intestines of the earth.”
Even Cleopatra recognized the value of earthworms
and declared them to be sacred.
• Worms are hermaphrodites, meaning they can be either
male or females, yet they still need another worm to
mate.
• Every earthworm has a band that looks like a collar
encircling its body. After the worm mates, the ring
hardens, and the worm crawls out of it. As it is crawling
through the ring, the worm deposits eggs and sperm
inside the ring, which then falls off. The ends of the
ring are sealed off and the ring turns into a cocoon
for the developing worm babies which emerge, fully
formed but very tiny, several weeks later.
• Worms come to the surface during heavy rains because
the damp earth facilitates movement and makes it
easier to find a mate.

Medicare Open Enrollment
If you’re on Medicare, you have until Dec. 7 to
make any changes to your coverage.
If you have the Original Medicare and like the
coverage you have now, you don’t need to do
anything. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan
(or want to change to one), all of the Original
Medicare benefits are covered, as well as others
specific to your plan.
By now you should have received your Plan
Annual Notice of change, along with the Evidence
of Coverage. (All the plans are required to send
these.) Read the forms carefully. If changes to your
plan are anticipated for 2017, such as out-of-pocket
costs, this is where you’ll learn what those will be.
To see what other plans offer, go online to
ww.medicare.gov and compare what you have to
what else is available.
To review plans in your area, put “plan finder” in the
search box. Put your ZIP code in the box. Enter any
drugs you take, and your current pharmacy. When
you get to the screen with your plan options, your
best bet is to click on Sort by Overall Star Rating.
Compare the annual drug costs, monthly premium,
deductibles and co-pays for each plan you’re
considering. Look for specifics: Does a new plan
require a referral before you see a specialist? Is your
favorite doctor still in your plan? Will you be required
to go to only those doctors or hospitals listed by the
plan? Are there extras like hearing, dental and vision?
If you need help sorting out your options, put
“SHIP program” in the search box on the Medicare
site, and you’ll find local resources for your area, or
go directly to www.shiptacenter.org. You also can call
SHIP at 1-877-839-2675 for a local referral.

DEAR DR. ROACH: All of us look
forward to eating. However, in my
case (age 79) it has become a chore.
Whether it is breakfast, lunch, dinner or a few snacks, after the first
few bites I have to blow my nose.
This goes on throughout the eating
period, and at the end, my handkerchief is soaked. At breakfast time,
after eating, I proceed to sneeze
five to 10 times, most of the time. I
have become a recluse. I turn down
invitations to dinners at homes and
restaurants, as it has become an
embarrassment.
I have taken Toprol and Timoptic
in the past 20 years, but this condition has occurred only in the past
four or five years, so I don’t think
it’s the drugs. During the day, I am
fine with no sneezing and blowing my nose, except maybe once or
twice. But when mealtime comes,
out comes the handkerchief for
another onslaught. Have you heard
of this condition? Should I consult a
specialist about it? — D.Z.
ANSWER: I have heard about it,
many times, as it is much more common than you might think. It goes
by the name of “gustatory rhinitis”
(which simply means that your nose
gets inflamed on eating). It is classified as a non-allergic rhinitis. It is
more common in the elderly, though it
can happen at any age.
Your regular doctor should be able
to help you. If non-medication treatments like nasal saline irrigation haven’t helped, then I usually prescribe
ipratropium bromide nasal spray
before eating.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently
read your Q&A “Blood donation
can affect athletic output.” Your
answer is correct, but you missed
a key opportunity to educate your
readers.
There is an alternative for this
man: Instead of donating whole
blood, he can ask his local Red Cross
about donating via apheresis (as I
do). The apheresis process requires
more time (up to two hours) and
attaches the donor to a centrifuge machine, which separates the
donor’s whole blood into red cells,
plasma and platelets. Each of those
blood products is then either bagged
for collection (if needed at that time
by the Red Cross) or returned to
the donor’s bloodstream (if not).
The donor always retains the right
to specify which blood products
may or may not be drawn, so your
reader can always say, “I prefer not
to donate reds today, but feel free
to draw plasma and platelets,” if he
knows he has a challenging athletic
event coming up.
In my case, I usually donate platelets and plasma about every six
weeks via apheresis, but normally
not red cells. One advantage of not
donating reds is that a donor can
return to donate plasma and platelets more frequently. During my
most recent donation, my nurse
mentioned that there was a serious
shortage of platelets but that the
supply of red blood cells was fine,
so she had been instructed to NOT
draw reds from any donor if that
donor was able to schedule another
donation of platelets in the next few
weeks. — M.M.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE
• To attract a mate, a female roach
will flex her legs, lift her wings, and
emit a chemical “perfume” called a
pheromone that can be detected
by a male roach up to 33 feet (10 m)
away. When the male approaches,
the two seem to do a bit of fencing
with their antennae.
• In the majority of roach species,
mating encounters are casual and
the female later drops her egg case
in a safe location and abandons it.
But the story is different with the
brown-hooded wood cockroach,
which inhabits the Atlantic coastline
from New York to Georgia. They
mate for life. Together the male and
female chew into wood making
a series of small chambers where
they live with their family for the
rest of their lives. About a year after
the male and female bond, their
first offspring are born and both
parents tend the young. Families
usually consist of less than half a
dozen youngsters. The families stick
together for three or four years while
the young mature.
COCKROACH LANGUAGE
• Cockroaches are able to make
noises in the same way crickets and
katydids do, by rubbing body parts
together. The sound is similar to
running a finger over the teeth of
a comb. They are also able to emit
a squeak when captured which is
loud enough to sometimes startle
the predator into dropping them.
The Madagascar hissing cockroach
when disturbed expels air from its
abdomen producing a noise that
can be heard 12 feet (3.6 m) away.
KILLING COCKROACHES
• 400 rads of radiation can kill a human
— but it takes 3,200 rads to kill a
cockroach, and some can survive
10,000 rads. That means that some
cockroaches survived Hiroshima.
So how can you eradicate a roach?
Through chemical warfare. One
of the cheapest and most reliable
methods of roach control is
powdered boric acid. Boric acid is
commonly used as an eyewash and
is available at any drug store. It’s
also called Borax and found in the
laundry aisle of the supermarket.
Roaches that walk through this will
groom themselves, ingesting the
powder which collects in their gut,
eventually killing them.
• Spray a roach with Raid and a
chemical dissolves the creature’s
exoskeleton, a truly horrible way to
die.
• The labs at the S. C. Johnson Corp.
breed and raise around 80,000
roaches each week for the express
purpose of finding new ways to kill
them. The company manufactures
insecticides such as Raid, so a
full-time staff works to provide
experimental victims.
• When a recipe for controlling
roaches appeared in a “Hints from
Heloise” article in 1982, the editors
of the column were swamped with
over 40,000 requests for copies.
• Roaches provide food for various
animals that prey on roaches,
supplying three times as much
protein as chicken meat.

• As Halloween approaches, it’s
interesting to note that in 16 states, you
won’t pay taxes on the candy you buy
for trick-or-treaters; for tax purposes,
candy is categorized as groceries. Of
course, there’s room for debate over
what qualifies as candy; breath mints
and gum are usually included, along
with the obvious — chocolate bars,
hard candies and such. The tax code
can get even more detailed than that,
though; for instance, in Florida (which
taxes candy but not groceries), marshmallows are tax-exempt, but marshmallow candies are not.

may have. The Virginia Department of

It came to light only after the contents

Eggs cups caught the attention
of enthusiasts during the 1980s
and ‘90s, and collecting them has
become a growing hobby. Egg cups
can be traced back several thousand
years and are found in almost every
country and culture. Most of us think
of egg cups as being made of ceramics,
but examples have been found crafted
of ivory, metal, glass, wood, rubber,
straw and even papier-mache.
Most collectors are especially interested in the character and personality
egg cups of the 1930s. Other popular
categories for collectors include Black
Memorabilia, Art Deco, Golliwoggs,
Political, Steamship and Souvenir
issues. Typical prices for character
and personality egg cups are Stan Laurel, $185; Andy Gump, $150, Ronald
Reagan, $90; Lone Ranger, $100; and
Popeye, $100.
One of the better references is “Egg
Cups: An Illustrated History and Price
Guide” by Brenda Blake and published
by Antique Publications. It is difficult
to find, but well worth the search.

Q:
I have inherited three pieces of
Hull pottery in the Dogwood
pattern. According to my older sister, the pieces were probably purchased during the early 1940s. What
can you tell me about this type of
pottery, and is it worth keeping? —
Veronica, Titusville, Florida
After finding a rich deposit of
clay soil in Perry County, Ohio,
Addis Emmet Hull founded the A.E.
Hull Pottery Company in 1905. Its
unpretentious line of ware was marketed throughout the country, and it
soon became one of the nation’s largest pottery outlets.
According to “Hull Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by David
Doyle and published by Krause Books,
the Dogwood pattern was introduced
in 1942. Also known as Wild Rose, it
is distinctive because of its hand-decorated embossed floral designs. It was
issued in cream with the base usually two-tone, either pink and blue or
cream and turquoise. Values vary, but
I’ve seen the vases and pitchers in this
pattern priced in the $150-$300 range.

Sausage Party (R) — This is the
Pixar-parody that will inevitably be
rented by accident to pacify some
innocent tykes, then quickly be turned
off with a few uncomfortable explanations afterward. A bunch of wideeyed talking foodstuffs (the lead hotdog voiced by Seth Rogen, with the
romantic interest/bun voiced by Kristen Wiig) are on an adventure around
a supermarket, looking for the truth
of what awaits them after being purchased — the reveal of what happens
to talking food when being prepped
and cooked is traumatizing. The movie is exceedingly offensive, and almost
admirably efficient at it. All races, religions, creeds and sex acts get unceremoniously mocked by talking food.
PICKS OF THE WEEK
Indignation (R) — From a kosher

Midwestern college, Marcus (Logan
Lerman) has come far. It’s 1951, and
the Korean War rages in the news, but
studious and introverted Marcus only
has eyes for the stunning Olivia (Sarah

blue eyes and winsome smile,
despite red flags that she
has mental-health troubles.
Though he’s the first to go to
college from his Jewish family, Marcus is distinctly non-religious, one thing which sets
him at odds with the creep-tastic dean (Tracy Letts).
The most notable thing up
front is the film’s visual aesthetic. You could say it’s nostalgic, but so much of it has

The Baseball Writers of America
Association have fixed a few glaring Hall of Fame omissions over the
past several years. The inclusion of
Mike Piazza, the best-hitting catcher
of all time, plus Andre Dawson and
Jim Rice, both dominant outfielders
of the 1970s and ‘80s, righted more
than a few wrongs.
Still, the BBWAA and the committee charged with appointing executives and overlooked players have
a ways to go. While the postseason
progresses into the cold autumn
night, here a few fire starters for you
and your friendly, knowledgeable
neighborhood baseball friends to
stoke by the hot stove.
We’ll begin with who is not invited:
Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens, Rafael
Palmiero, Andy Pettite (remember
those postseason wins, folks) and
Alex Rodriguez. Also, Pete Rose
is banned for life, and he should be
content with his Fox Sports Network
post-game show gig (very entertaining, by the way).
Now, in no particular order, those
who have been overlooked:
1. Tim Raines. Actually, this is the
No. 1 most glaring omission. Raines
was a seven-time All-Star, a batting
champion, a silver-slugger award
winner in left field, is fifth all-time in
stolen bases and had a career on-base
percentage of .380. Raines was the
second-best leadoff hitter of his era
(but more durable) to Rickey Henderson and one of the undisputed
great left fielders in history. Easily
one of the most popular players of
October 24, 2016
Still Waiting
his time.
2. Lee Smith. Third in career saves
and a seven-time All-Star, Smith was
dominant from 1983 to 1995, leading
the NL in saves three times, landing
14 times in the top 10. He was one
of the top 10 vote-getters for a Cy
Young four times. Only 11 players
have appeared in more games than
Smith, he ranks third in career games
finished, and his strikeout to innings
pitched ratio of 8.73 is the 12th best
of all-time. Why even have a Hall of
Fame if you’re going to ignore guys
like him?
3. Jeff Bagwell. Rumored performance-enhancing-drug use, the
lack of “milestone” numbers like
3,000 hits, 500 homers and the overlooked Houston market in general
is said to plague Bagwell’s entry to
the Hall. Yet, his career on-base percentage plus slugging percentage
of .948 is the 22nd best all time. He
won a rookie of the year award, an
MVP award, a gold glove, four silver sluggers, and averaged 35 home
runs and 115 RBI, with slash line of
.297/.408/.540.
4. Jeff Kent. No second baseman hit more home runs than Kent.
Maligned for his fielding, he still
ranks 19th in career double plays
turned. Eight times, he drove in more
than 100 runs in a season.
5. Curt Schilling. After Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz and Clemens, one
of the most dominant pitchers of his
era. He often averaged nearly nine
strikeouts to one walk, and his career
average of 4.4 is the third best of all
time. He has the hardware, the MVPs
and the bloody sock to show for it,
too.
Apologies to Don Mattingly and
Keith Hernandez this time around.

Homemade Microwave
Meals Save Time
I’ve found that using my microwave
oven saves hours of time and keeps
my kitchen clean and cool. The history of the microwave oven goes back
to 1946, when Dr. Percy Spencer, an

I encourage you to read the instruction book that came with your microwave oven. It’s the easiest way to find
out how to successfully use all of its
functions. My microwave has all of
the typical functions, but I especially
love the warming oven feature. It
cycles on and off so that I can hold
dinner for my husband when he’s
running late, or keep a casserole dish
warm during the holidays.
You can use your microwave to
prepare everything from appetizers
to desserts. It’s energy efficient, as it
won’t heat up your kitchen, and also
helps to retain more nutrients in your
foods. In some cases, a microwave is
the best way to cook a dish, especially
with vegetables, giving them a better
taste and texture.

Raytheon Company. The company
was testing a vacuum tube called a
magnetron, the power tube that drives
a radar set. As Dr. Percy stood in front
of the “radar box,” a candy bar in his
pocket melted.
Dr. Percy tried other experiments
with food, including using popcorn
kernels. He designed a metal box
around the magnetron with microwave power. Engineers developed and
refined the idea, and the first commercial microwave oven hit the market
in 1947. However, initial response
was not very good, and it wasn’t until
1975 that a microwave oven was cre-
When cooking on any power level

by cycling power on and off, so
the energy has a chance to move

used for cooking. Carefully follow the
recipe when using your microwave,
and you’ll have beautifully cooked
meals each time!

Two cockroaches are devouring the garbage in a
trashcan. As one of them munches, the other tells
him about a house he just left. “You’d never believe
it,” he says, “but the kitchen was spotless. Everything
— the sink, the utensils, the counters — all of it was
sparkling clean!” The other roach stops chewing and
says, “Do you have to talk like that when I’m eating?”

LOTTERIES
• Augustus Caesar held the first known
lottery, to raise funds to repair Rome.
• In 1851 in France, the French government
needed money to sustain itself. Recent
reports of gold strikes in California resulted
in an idea. A national lottery was announced
throughout France. Tickets sold for one
franc each, and the prizes were solid gold
ingots. The proceeds from this lottery were
to be used to ship 5,000 fine French citizens
to California in order to give them a new
start in life. The lottery was rigged so that
the gold never left the royal treasury. And
instead of shipping 5,000 of Frances’s best
citizenry, they instead loaded up the ships
with prisoners, prostitutes, and thieves—
anyone they most desired to get rid of.
• Claude Monet won the French lottery in
1891. His winnings permitted him to devote
himself painting. He became one of the
most famous painters of the century.
• Lotteries in the U.S. date back to the 1600s.
The new English colony of Jamestown was
financed by a lottery in 1612. The first lottery
sponsored by Congress was approved
in 1776. The Mountain Road Lottery was
sponsored by George Washington to fund
a road over the Allegheny Mountains. Yale,
Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth and the
University of Pennsylvania all sponsored
lotteries. The Continental Congress raised
over $1 million in 1776 for the Revolutionary
Army.
• Every major religion (except the Quakers)
established lotteries at some time in
the early 1800s. Over 300 schools and
universities and hundreds of transportation
projects were benefactors of early lotteries.
• After several scandals associated with
lotteries took away the public’s trust and
led to national prohibition of the games,
Congress basically outlawed lotteries in
1894, and they weren’t revived until New
Hampshire held one in 1964. (continued

Winter watering is not as common
as summer time watering, but
prior to a hard freeze or cold snap,
make sure there is ample moisture
around the root zone.
I need to ask a question about
fall cleanup in my yard on
weeds. We have a great stand of
Bermuda grass. We have good
fertility program for past year.
Moisture levels are good based
on watering and rainfall. We have
been regularly mowing with a good
grass height, not cut too short. I
use a mulching mower most of
time and choose not to bag the
clippings.
I applied fall preemergent last week. My question
is this......we still have some active
Q.
crabgrass in both front and back.....
can I use a “weed and feed” to try
and clean up what weeds are still
active before they go to seed?
A.
I cannot imagine that if you
have crabgrass that you have
not already had seed set—it grows
so rapidly and produces seed stalks
often in-between mowing. I would
not be using anymore fertilizer
now, or post-emergent herbicides
for summer weeds. Use a preemergent herbicide in late Feb.early April to prevent crabgrass
seeds from germinating. Your best
defense on lawn weeds is a good
offense. Having a thick, dense turf
keeps weeds at bay. It sounds like
you are on the right track.

Q:
One of my favorite shows was
“The Good Wife.” Any chance
for a revival, or perhaps a big-screen
feature? — Felicia F., via email
Coming this February, CBS
All Access will stream a whole
new spinoff series of “The Good Wife”
starring Christine Baranski, who will
reprise her role as the beloved Diane
Lockhart, which earned her six Emmy
Award nominations. She will be joined
by fan-favorite Cush Jumbo as Lucca
Quinn, and Sarah Steele will reprise
her role of Marissa Gold. Just added
to the roster is “Game of Thrones” and
“Downton Abbey” alum Rose Leslie,
who will play Maia Sindell, the goddaughter of Diane.
The new series is set one year after the
events of “The Good Wife” finale. An
enormous financial scam has destroyed
Maia’s reputation while simultaneously wiping out Diane’s savings. No longer welcome at Lockhart and Lee, the
two end up together with Lucca Quinn
at another one of Chicago’s top firms.
“We’re thrilled to have Rose on
board,” said executive producers Robert and Michelle King. “We needed a
young actress who could hold her own
with Christine Baranski and Cush Jumbo, and Rose is perfect. She’s real, she’s
strong, and she can play comedy. If we
designed an actress from the ground
up, we couldn’t have done better.”

“The Amazing Race,” CBS’s
award-winning reality/competition show, will be back for it’s 29th
season, with original plans for it to be
a midseason show. As of this writing,
an exact date had not been announced.
As it now stands, the freshman series
“MacGyver” has been granted a
full-season order, and with it playing
in the normal Friday-night timeslot for

which may explain why movie actors
are defecting to television. Lauren
Graham and Alexis Bledel are getting $750,000 a show from Netflix for
“The Gilmore Girls.” Mark Harmon
gets $525,000 an episode for “NCIS,”
while HBO pays Kevin Spacey
(“House of Cards”), Peter Dinklage,
Lena Headley, Kit Harrington, Emi-
Jeff Daly/courtesy of HBO
Dwayne Johnson
ly Clarke and Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau (“Game of Thrones”) each
$500,000 a show.
Dwayne Johnson parlayed his wrestling career into a $185 million movie
career and is now pulling in $400,000
an episode for his HBO series “Ballers.” Drew Barrymore (“Santa Clarita Diet”), Emma Stone and Jonah
Hill (“Maniac”) are each earning
$350,000 an episode from Netflix for
their series. The stars of “The Simpsons” — Nancy Cartwright, Dan
Castellaneta, Yardley Smith and
Julie Kavner — are getting $315,000
a show just for their voices.
There’s nothing “Transparent” about
Jeffrey Tambor’s salary; Amazon
pays him $275,000 an episode. Julie
Louis-Dreyfuss (“Veep”), Tim Allen
(“Last Man Standing”), Patricia Heaton (“The Middle”) and the cast of
“Modern Family” — Julie Bowen, Ty
Burrell, Eric Longstreet, Jesse Tyler
Ferguson and Sophia Vergara — all
earn $250,000 a show.
President Obama’s worth is $12.2
million. He may have aged in eight
years, but so has his money, and he
doesn’t have to endure reruns where
he looks much younger.

Scent Your Home
With Woodsy Potpourri
What’s the first thing that comes to
mind when you hear the word “potpourri”? A category on “Jeopardy”?
It’s that and more: a collection, a
sort of mish-mash or hodgepodge
of things, and when I’m out for a fall
walk in a park or on a trail, I think of
nature being a potpourri. There’s so
much to look at, smell and touch.
Imagine if you could
capture and save that
sensory
experience.
Well, you can when you
gather nature finds and
stir them up to create a
beautiful and aromatic
mixture that can be displayed in a bowl or small
basket in your home.
First, collect the finds
for this colorful woodsy
potpourri mixture from
your own backyard or
from a nature walk with
your kids. Then find the
rest of the ingredients in
your spice cabinet and
even your fruit bowl.
Here’s how to mix up a batch of
woodsy potpourri from autumn’s
bounty:
Fill a large mixing bowl with finds
such as small pinecones, seedpods,
cedar chips or shavings, bits of bark,
seeds and pressed colorful leaves. Add
dried orange, lime and lemon peels, and
dried orange slices (dry the peelings
and fruit on a rack in a 200-degree oven
for two to three hours, or set the items
on a tray to air-dry for several days).
Add kitchen spices to this “woodland stew,” such as whole bay leaves,
broken cinnamon sticks, cloves and
whole allspice. You may wish to add a
few shakes of ground nutmeg, cloves
and cinnamon, too.
With a big wooden spoon, let your
school-age child lightly toss the ingredients. Doing this step outside on
a picnic table is fun and eliminates
kitchen clean-up. An adult may add
several drops of clove, orange or cinnamon oil (available in supermarkets
and pharmacies).
Store the mixture in a large, nonmetal covered container for a week or two.
Stir occasionally.
Scoop the contents into wooden
bowls or decorative dishes, and set
them around your home on shelves and
tables. If you share some with friends,
present the gift in decorative clear containers, such as Mason jars or recycled
food jars with labels removed. Paint or
cover the lids with fabric, and tie with
a ribbon.
Note: Collect bark and moss from
the ground or from cut branches, not
from a living tree.

Breed Bans Don’t Deter Dog Attacks
In early October, the city of Montreal began enforcing a bylaw
that bans the ownership or adoption of any dog breed identified
as a pit bull. Alongside of this, the city ordered any pit bulls in its
shelters to be euthanized. The city council passed the measure
after a dog attacked and killed a 55-year-old woman.
A massive rescue effort was launched by organizations and
individuals based outside the city to transfer dogs under a death
sentence to new shelters, to foster some out, and otherwise try to
save as many as possible.
The reason so many people acted so swiftly was because of
growing knowledge that breed-specific legislation simply doesn’t
work. In fact, the city of Edmonton, Alberta, rescinded a similar
ban in 2012 because it was difficult to enforce. A CBC article
added that the number of dog bites in that city per year never
changed, staying between 400 and 600, from a variety of breeds
in addition to pit bulls.
Banning one breed doesn’t stop the problem of dog attacks.
I’ve seen aggressive dogs in many different breeds -- including
normally laid-back Labs who just couldn’t be approached safely
-- and I’ve met wonderfully behaved dogs from breeds considered
to be aggressive, like Sally, the sweet and gentle pittie who, along
with her owner, greets me on my morning walk.
There isn’t a perfect solution out there. But cities could better
spend their money helping owners learn how to train and care
for their dogs, rather than try to remove one type of dog from the
city limits.
EDITOR’S NOTE: As we went to press, the Quebec Superior
Court suspended the pit bull ban. The city is appealing.

• In savory recipes (think creambased soups) that call for heavy
cream, try this amazing, healthy substitute from “Cooking Light”: Cook
1/2 cup brown rice in 2 cups chicken
stock for 25 minutes. Remove from
heat and let stand 5 minutes. Blend
with 1 cup low-fat milk in a blender
until smooth and creamy. A savings of
over 700 calories and almost 90 grams
of fat per cup!
• “Got leftover cake? Freeze it! At
my daughter’s birthday party we had
a really delicious cake, but almost half
of it went uneaten. It seemed a shame
to throw it away and too gluttonous to
eat it all before it spoiled, so we decided to freeze it in slices. It froze perfectly, icing and all, and we were able
to enjoy it several more times over the
following month.” — Amy in Florida
• If your toilet is slow to flush but
does not appear to be stopped up,
check the water valves underneath the
rim of the toilet. Clear any built-up
mineral deposits with a straightened
out paperclip. This allows the water to
flush the bowl more effectively.
• Early spring is a great time for garden clean-up chores. Remove dead or
damaged limbs on trees and shrubs.
Remove suckers at the base of plants.
Spruce up your garden beds to get
them ready for annuals.
• “To make gluing easier when crafting, I pour an entire bottle of white
school glue into a glass mason jar with
lid. I use paintbrushes to do my paper
crafts, as the glue spreads well with a
brush. If I am unable to use a brush, I
use a straw to capture glue and “drop”
it on other projects. The straw makes
it easier to get the glue into cracks
or small spots as necessary. Just put
a straw down in the glue, cover the
open end with your finger, remove it
from the jar and position the glue end
of the straw where it needs to go, then
remove your finger.” — J. in Maryland
