Morgans of Canada Club is now entering its
third year of operation. Our mission remains
the promotion of the Morgan Horse Breed in
the Masters Tournament at Spruce Meadows on
behalf of each and every Morgan Horse Owner,
Breeder and Enthusiast, Canada wide.
In the past two years we have been
fortunate to achieve back-to-back championship
wins in the Battle of the Breeds competition and glean the honour of the inaugural Fan
Favourite award in 2009 with our Justin Morgan school house themed booth; a favourite stopping place for tens of thousands of visitors to learn about the beautiful Morgan
horse. These achievements have resulted in huge media attention being focused on
our breed throughout the entire year.
The success of our promotional group depends on your support. We sincerely hope we can count on your contribution to our endeavor of defending our championship title and continuing a long tradition of Morgan participation in this unique celebration of the horse.

S
ummer gets so busy with horse
shows, I sometimes wonder
how I fit the rest of my life in
around them! I’m sure your
life is much the same... whether it’s horse
shows or trail rides or somewhere in between.
However, as usual, you’ll want to take
some time out of your busy summer
schedule to read through the pages of
your magazine, Canadian Morgan. For
example, there’s the list of 2011 Morgan
Judges on Page 8 and the Schedule of
Fees for Part-bred and Purebred Morgans
on Pages 12 and 13.
The Equine Foundation of Canada is
very active these days; read about their
“comings and goings” on Pages 9 and
16.
Do you know of anyone who should
join our great association? If so, have
them fill out the Membership Application
form on Page 10.
Nancy, our magnificent Office Administrator, always has news worth reading,
so turn to Page 6 for that. And, I couldn’t
agree more with our President Bob Watson’s message this month: whether you
show, trail ride or own a “pasture pet,” I’m
sure there’s something you would like to
share about your favourite Morgan. And,
you can do so with an ad in your favourite
magazine, Canadian Morgan!
Don’t forget to send in those foal photos ($30 +tax per photo) by August 15.
Happy riding... and reading.

President’s Message
‘Use it or Lose it’
C
ommunication is a key part of our lives in every aspect,
whether it be talking to family, friends or colleagues, training
someone or selling something. The CMHA board continually
discusses and brainstorms about how we can communicate
more effectively to keep our members informed and involved.
The Canadian Morgan magazine is our chief vehicle for promotion and
communicating with our members and this year we have added the CMHA
office eNews. The magazine, in addition to informing members of bylaw
changes, coming events, fee schedules and other important items that our
members need to know about, is also an educational and promotional
vehicle and it’s entertaining.
Canadian Morgan magazine editor Cindy Dickson spends many hours
contacting members seeking advertisements and articles of interest. We
all enjoy articles about the Equine Foundation of Canada and its charitable work, trail rides and human interest stories about a person and their
favourite Morgan. We need these type of articles to entertain and attract
attention. The challenge for us as a Board of Directors is that these items
do not provide revenue to the club. Any shortfall between the magazine’s
revenue and expenses must be covered from general revenue, which comes
from registrations, transfers and so on. The Canadian Morgan magazine has
showed considerable improvement by simultaneously increasing revenue
and decreasing costs during fiscal 2010. We have received favourable comments about the magazine including the look and content, and comments
from older, non-active members that they look to the magazine to stay connected to the Morgan breed and friends they have made over the years.
Horses are great stress relievers; “There is something about the outside
of a horse that is good for the inside of a man” is very true. The Morgan
Administrator’s Message
S
ummer is always
quiet in the CMHA
office, which means
everyone is busy with
their Morgans! But, I know there
is a lot of activity going on across
the country. Alberta recently had
the Mane Event, Ontario took
part in the Uxbridge Horseman’s
Expo and Lindsay’s All About
Horses event and Manitoba is
busy planning events to coincide
with Equine Canada Horse Week.
These and many other events
are wonderful venues for local
clubs to be involved with and I’m
always excited to ship out boxes of material for your event. It is best if you
can give me advanced notice.
I am happy to announce that the CMHA has a NEW promotional tool for
you to use at your next event! We have CMHA postcards. These colourful
and inexpensive cards should be a wonderful promotional tool to give away
to all who visit your booth. We chose three lovely photos of Morgans for
the card: Dawn Brown driving Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li*, Kathy Padgham
riding Northern Exposure in a dressage victory pass and a wonderful trail
photo taken by Juliet Franke at the Alberta Equine Foundation Trail Ride in
2010.
Another new product that we are introducing is a “membership renewal
reminder” post card. The board felt that sometimes we all need a little
reminder when life gets busy and we forget if we have joined the CMHA.
These cards will be sent out as a gentle reminder that we miss you and

horse is certainly good
for the inside of a
man. The Canadian
Morgan magazine is
an important part of
maintaining that connection and we want
to keep it that way. To
do so we need more
magazine revenue. Approximately two-thirds
of our members do not participate in horse shows, but they do participate in
many interesting activities such as parades, trail riding, competitive driving
and endurance riding. We wish to encourage these members to support the
magazine by running an advertisement telling other members about their
horse or horses and in what manner they enjoy them. The ‘show people’
support the magazine with ads, however the ‘average member’ has done
a limited amount of advertising. We have received support from groups
such as Morgans of Canada who promote the Battle of the Breeds, but we
need you, as a CMHA member, to consider placing a paid advertisement
telling us about your Morgan friend. I think it is interesting to see ads about
a ‘back yard’ horse that someone loves dearly. The Canadian Morgan
magazine is an important part of promoting the Morgan horse in Canada,
but if we cannot attract more revenue from our magazine we may have to
close it down.
Our challenge to you is ‘use it or lose it.’
we hope you will re-join. Again, we chose three photos of Morgans that
represent the diversity of our breed: Dina Popadiuk driving BMF Spartacus,
UCM Tecumseh jumping (owned by Gord/Mary Freeman) and a photo of
three walk/trot riders, representing Saddle Seat, Hunt Seat and Western
Seat. The riders are from Karen Abel’s lesson program at Dawnville Farms.
Congratulations to the New Brunswick Morgan Horse Club for being
awarded “Club Beyond Compare” by the Canadian Horse Journal. They
won this award for their passion, co-operation and support of the Morgan
breed. They like to have fun, work well together and love their Morgans! A
write up about the club is included in the 2011 Equine Consumer’s Guide.
And that’s not all! The awards keep coming for New Brunswick-owned
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li* and owners Walter and Dawn Brown. Canadian
Horse Journal awarded “Moe” as their Equine Shining Star. This award
goes to a Canadian born and raised horse of any breed or discipline that
deserves recognition for achievement in sport, recreation, work, breeding
or therapeutic endeavours. What great promotion for our breed and for the
devoted Morgan owners in New Brunswick. Congratulations!

It’s all a matter of hamburgers!
An Equine
Foundation
Ride in Leduc
H
amburgers are important. The large majority of us eat
hamburgers. Those privileged persons in the accompanying
group photo, all enjoyed a hamburger or two at the Equine
Foundation Ride on June 5 in the Leduc area. If you are not
in the picture or behind the camera, the hamburger with your name on it
came home to our freezer to be consumed shortly by someone else. Those
of you who contributed, even though you could not be there, will be put on
the hamburger list next year.
Although faced with snow on Saturday, then rain most of Saturday night
and into Sunday a.m., followed by huge mosquitoes while on the ride, this
hardy group raised just under the $4,000 mark at the Leduc Schwab Foundation Ride on Sunday, June 5 (not to mention the nEHV-1 virus threat).
Sunday did turn into a very nice day, and while the rain had shortened
the ride distance, a great social time was had by all. Of course, the food
was first class as always, with chief cook Ross on the job (and he even paid
for the privilege of doing it). Willa Schwab and Stephanie Able topped the numbers, with each bringing in $450. By mutual agreement the cooler was awarded to Stephanie
(Willa won the 2010 one), while she, Willa, was given a bag full of prizes.
Indeed, everyone on the ride received prizes, literally by the bucket full.
Ever supportive of the efforts of the Foundation, the SCHWAB.ca group
(Leduc) will be matching the number of the top rider. Additional sponsors were: Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health a/c John Stephen, The
County of Leduc and Dawnville Farms.
Thanks to everyone who participated, donated or helped with the event,
especially Sarah, who once again looked after the registrations, and Ed
Plitt and Karen Abel for all the photos.
Look for more information and photos on the EFC Web site at www.
equinefoundation.ca or Facebook page.
By this fall, the University of Calgary Vet College is hoping for completion of the horse prototype to simulate colic conditions for the students to
learn from. This is being built with funding from the Equine Foundation.
Watch for announcements on this. CM

Everything Equine Show!
by Nancy Kavanagh,
Cyan Star Morgans
T
he Everything Equine Show was held on May 14 and was
hosted by the Uxbridge Horseman’s Association. The Ontario
Morgan Horse Club hadn’t participated in a few years, but
thought we would try putting on a demo and have our booth set
up this year. Thankfully, our booth was inside as the weather was mostly
wet, but there seemed to be a good crowd that showed up despite the overcast and moist day.
Sheila and Linda McNaughton took care of the booth that Amanda McKill set up the night before; thank you ladies for volunteering. I know that for
Sheila it is a bit of a hardship as she has to arrange time off from her normal
job at the tack shop on the RCRA grounds.
The Kavanaghs and the McGintys volunteered to take horses for the
demo. Lauren McGinty rode her gelding Hillwood Irish Proverb (Riley)
and Lisa Kavanagh rode Cyan Star Trinity (Jordan). It is a quick drive from
our farm in Greenbank to the Uxbridge Fairgrounds and while it was grey
and overcast, the rain held off for a good portion of the morning. We set up
our trailer with two box stalls for the horses to stay dry and comfortable in
and we were able to get them groomed and tacked up and dry and comfortable too!
Our time slot was 11:45 a.m. for our first demo, which was great. There
was a good crowd on hand and we were ready to go. Lauren and Riley
looked superb as they represented the Hunter Pleasure Morgan and Lisa and
Jordan were beautiful as the Western Pleasure entry. Hilary Balmer read the
bios for the breed while the girls demonstrated the gaits of the Morgan.
Lauren took this opportunity to re-introduce Riley to the show ring as
they haven’t shown in a couple of years and it was good to see them out
there. Lisa took Jordan over to the rail where the majority of people were
watching and gave them a chance to pet Jordan and ask questions. Jordan
soaked up the attention while Riley proudly trotted around the ring.
At this point the rain started to come down and it was nice to get back to
our trailer and not get too wet. They had demos going all day and the rain
didn’t dampen their efforts although I’m sure there were some horses that
weren’t too keen on all the umbrellas!
We had a long break before our final demo at 3:30 p.m. so we took the
opportunity to walk around and see the vendors and watch some of the
other demos. This was especially good for Lauren and our two wonderful
grooms for the day; Kyla Vendrig and Madeleine Gainey. Thank you to

Kyla and Madeleine for all your help.
As we prepared for the final demo, we realized the demos were getting
a bit behind schedule, but we got ready for our time slot and took a longer
warm up while we waited. The rain was getting stronger and the grassy
footing a bit more slippery, but thankfully, the main ring was sand and
wasn’t too bad. As we prepared to enter the ring, we were introduced by
Akaash Maharaj, the CEO of Equine Canada. I am not aware that any of the
other demos were so royally introduced!
It is unfortunate that for our final demo the rain was really starting to
come down and the crowds were leaving, but we did our job and I’m very
pleased how well our horses performed.
Thank you to Lisa and Lauren for riding and to everyone who helped
make our day promoting the Morgan possible. CM
The Amazing Max!
by Lorne Facey
T
he day before “Max” died, he seemed off his food, then died
before we could get out to the stables the next morning. Congestive heart failure? Relatively quick, anyway. Linda rode him
only a month earlier when we took the last pictures of him. He
was just three months shy of his 36th birthday.
Max (Meldon Maximus) was foaled June 9, 1975. We first met Max in
1994 when we moved our Quarter Horse, Ozzie, to stables east of Ottawa,
ON. We started helping out at the stables and discovered the owner could
not devote much time to him. As my wife and I both ride, we started to hack
out with Max. He was a confident horse, was the first to go through water
and never flinched when trucks or school buses sped by.
Max had laminitis twice and both times recovered under our farrier’s
good care to continue hacking out. Max, at 35 years old, amazed me with
the fluidity of his movement on our rides. He trotted and cantered with a lot
of energy, though we tried to keep him from galloping under saddle.
According to our farrier, his joints were better than those of our 21-yearold Quarter Horse, and he continued to thrive blanketed in a large field with
a shelter and his
buddy Ozzie. He was
missing a few teeth,
but managed well
with wet oats and
second-cut alfalfa
hay.
We enjoyed
many rides on Max.
The accompanying
pictures were taken
February 7, 2011, as
we headed out for
a ride.
PS. I had not ridden Max since we did
a somersault on some soft ground about 8 years ago. Neither one of us was
hurt, but my wife had taken over since then. CM
Equine Foundation’s gift to vet college doubles in
value through matching gift program
A
$20,000 donation from the Equine Foundation of Canada
(EFC) to support horse health at the Western College of
Veterinary Medicine on the University of Saskatchewan
campus has helped to raise another $20,000 through a
matching gift program.
“The Equine Foundation of Canada’s dedicated efforts to support
horse health at the WCVM and at other Canadian veterinary colleges are
exceptional,” said WCVM Dean Dr. Douglas Freeman. “Year after year,
members of the EFC have put the long-term health and welfare of horses
first by investing in veterinary education, research and clinical services
across the country. We admire their commitment and thank them for
supporting our veterinary college.”
With the EFC donation and the matched dollars, the WCVM has
purchased two pieces of equipment that will be used for horse health
research as well as for the clinical care of patients in the college’s veterinary
teaching hospital:
• a Holter monitor that will allow veterinarians to continuously monitor
a horse’s heart activity for 24 hours or longer. The equipment will help
veterinarians diagnose and investigate cardiac arrhythmias and other
cardiac-related symptoms that come and go without any predictability.
• an overground video endoscope that gives veterinarians the ability to
examine a horse’s upper airway during exercise. Endoscopic evaluation
of horses exercised on a high-speed treadmill or on a track is the gold
standard for identifying dynamic abnormalities such as dorsal displacement
of the soft palate (DDSP), laryngeal hemiplegia or other upper airway
dysfunctions.
While the EFC generally rotates its annual donation among Canada’s five
veterinary colleges, its members decided to make an exception. “We had
donated to the WCVM in 2009, but the chance to double the support for
horse health programs was just too good of an opportunity to pass up,” said
EFC President Eldon Bienert of Leduc, Alta.
Combined, the two EFC gifts and the matching dollars will result in a
$60,000 addition to the WCVM’s equine health program. After more than
four years, the matching gift program has helped to increase funding for
WCVM’s horse health activities by more than $450,000.
“I think the matching gift program is a wonderful motivator for anyone
who owns and works with horses. We rely on our animals for so much, and
this program inspires horse owners and organizations like ours to dig deeper

for the sake of horse health care,” said Bienert.
Supporters of the EFC include members of all types of equine breed
organizations and sport groups across Canada. Through fundraising trail
rides, raffles and individual gifts, EFC members have raised more than
$200,000 in support for scholarships, research grants and the purchase of
medical equipment over the past 28 years. CM

What do we do with our versatile Morgans?
Rob a train, of course!
by Jean Bridges
O
ur family was invited to take part in an enactment of a train robbery. For
the past five years, the UNICEF train carries approximately 200 passengers
through the fall foliage from McAdam to St. Stephen, New Brunswick, and
back again. This popular event is a sell-out every year and every year raises
over $10,000 for UNICEF.
The volunteering spirit of the organizers and the New Brunswick Southern who donate
the train is remarkable. And, the trip is like taking a step back into the days of the passenger train. There are all sorts of stories that passengers are left with when their journey
ends and some of those stories are created by the infamous “Wawaig Gang” whose annual
mission is to rob the train.
I didn’t know quite what to expect when we arrived at the site. We met the other members of the Wawaig Gang and we did several rehearsals before the train arrived. After the

train arrived and stopped, the gang captured the conductor and tied him up.
The riders rode around the train and some of the gang members boarded.
When our gang leader left the train with the loot we all rode off into the
woods...… but that wasn’t the end! The “sheriff” chased us and took us back
to the train. We had to line up beside the train with our hands up to have
our pictures taken. The passengers clapped for the gang as the train left.
It was an experience I am glad I didn’t miss. The riders on horseback
have become such a part of the trip that people call and ask for “train robbery” tickets! We are invited to be part of next year’s train robbery with
our Morgans.
P.S.: My Morgan, Magic, received some extra carrots for his part in the
robbery. CM
