GoldenMoments August 2012 GOOD TO BE LUCKY By: Wylyn Doherty There's a saying, "It's better to be lucky than good," but the dog in this story is both Lucky AND good. Lucky was picked up by a local animal control and her owners were found because she had been tattooed when she was spayed. However, Lucky's owners decided not to reclaim her, so GRRCC stepped in. Since Lucky was an older dog and was heartworm positive, her chances of being adopted by anyone other than GRRCC were slim to none. To add insult to injury, poor Lucky was flea-infested, covered with sores, overweight, severely matted, and had an eye infection. She didn't seem to be living up to her name. All that changed when she left the shelter with the GRRCC volunteer... After a visit to our veterinarian, multiple baths, and hours of grooming, Lucky went into her foster home. From her poor physical condition, we guessed she had been an "outdoor only" dog, but she quickly adapted to indoor life and was the perfect houseguest. She didn't have any accidents, she accepted her many medications without fuss, and she walked decently on a leash. More than that, she showed everyone who met her how truly grateful she was to finally be receiving the love and attention that all dogs deserve. Lucky's personality shined like the sun! It was impossible not to fall in love with this sweet blonde girl who greeted everyone with a smile and a wagging tail. She bonded quickly to her foster dad and accepted other dogs without issue, though it was clear her main interest was people. Lucky spent many weeks in foster care, as she had to be treated for heartworm disease. In that time, her skin healed up nicely and she began to lose her excess pounds. She had a horrible sore on her nose when we took her from the shelter, but that healed, as well. Her coat began to gleam and she became almost as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside. Truly, Lucky was a special dog. Now to find that special person to be the center of Lucky's world... Natalie contacted us because her previous GRRCC dog had passed away. Though Lucky did not fit the description of the dog Natalie was looking for, there was something about her that caught Natalie's eye and tugged at her heartstrings. How perfect that Natalie is a teacher and planned to take her new dog to school with her every day -- what more could Lucky ask for than to be surrounded by children?!? Here's what Natalie has to say: "In February, after not quite two years together, I lost my golden Riley to a brain tumor. Since my Riley was a GRRCC dog, I began watching the GRRCC website at the beginning of the summer searching for a three-year old male. However, the golden that stole my heart was an 8 ½ year old female named Lucky. After seeing the photos, reading her story and particularly after meeting her, I knew I had to become her person. Lucky is definitely a mama’s girl and is frequently somewhat of a Velcro dog. Interestingly, she still hasn’t barked or even tried to bark. Her vet says she is fine. Lucky seems to be happy communicating with her wagging tail and big brown eyes. She doesn’t care at all about other dogs, only people. P.O. Box 471931, Charlotte, NC 28247 www.grrcc.com GoldenMoments She won’t chase a tennis ball but loves to play football with the children. She plays wide receiver and even though they must tag rather than tackle her, Lucky has been known to run over a 5 year old in her quest for the football. The students also read to her, give her baths, bury her in the playground sand (with permission), play dress-up with her and find numerous ways to have fun with Lucky. This will be our first summer together. Lucky has her Cool Vest and her Cooling Pet Mat so she is prepared for the Columbia heat but I don’t know how I am going to explain that her children are going to be taking a vacation for two months. Perhaps someone knows a phone number for RentA-Kid? Many, many thanks to foster parents Gary Rhinesmith & Lynnea Pulver, and all of GRRCC for the loving care provided to Lucky and for allowing this wonderful creature to become a part of my life and touching the lives of so many others. Her name may be Lucky but I feel as though I am the one who has been blessed. Congratulations to Our Adopted Dogs and Their Forever Families! 11/5/2011 11/5/2011 11/13/2011 11/18/2011 11/20/2011 11/28/2011 1/1/2012 1/8/2012 1/21/2012 2/24/2012 2/24/2012 2/24/2012 2/26/2012 3/12/2012 3/24/2012 4/19/2012 5/19/2012 5/29/2012 5/31/2012 6/23/2012 6/29/2012 7/20/2012 7/28/2012 8/5/2012 8/6/2012 8/10/2012 8/23/2012 8/25/2012 8/25/2012 8/25/2012 8/25/2012 9/1/2012 9/1/2012 9/2/2012 Dave & Eileen Shleffar Will & Kate Jenkins George & Bonnie O'Brien Jeff & Angela Duerr Mike & Bridgett Noll Benjamin Kraus Parker & Lindesy Chambliss Shelley Hammil & Dibbrell Whitten Doug & Linda Nexsen Jody Adams and Michelle Sarno-Adams Matt & Adria Ruff Kathy Kester Natalie Armstrong James Kinane Jack & Judy Gray Chris Cochran & Elizabeth Goodwin Cochran Beau & Jen Snider Damon & Sara Cahill Rick & Marcia Gross Bruce & Clarie Gasparre Michael & Casey Wilson Michael Rainey Bill Krupicka Cecile' Ebert & Tommy Walters Pam & Kevin Lamberson Steve & Carrie Crofford Marvin Szajna Dean & Dawn Delventhal Kirsten & Phil Ruzicka Donna & Chuck Hennesen Pete & Dorothy Parnian Lee Coffey & Linda Brees Dennis & Kathy St. Jean Marc & Courtney Donelson Page 2 Jasmine Robbie (now Cooper) Comet Patrick (now Kasey) Moxy Hailey Gabriel Sydney Sawyer Cody (now Clyde) Royce (now Levi) Baxter Lady (now Elle') Sam Jake (now Bretton) Cayman Quinn (now Lucky) Charley Lucky Camden Dasher Keegan Riley2 Bodie Liberty (now Libby) Rudy Riley Ben Thomas (now Milo) James (now Charlie) George (now Tucker) Patrick (now Henry) Max Lucas August 2012 Notes from the President It has been a good 9 or 10 months since our last newsletter and I must apologize for the delay. We were not super busy with intakes the latter part of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 but we are certainly busy now. Do remember to check the website on a regular basis for available Goldens, adoptions and our events. Look for the article elsewhere in this newsletter about the upcoming Tennis Ball raffle and please purchase your tickets to support the Club. At the end of 2011, the Board said goodbye to Jill Santuccio, Meg Roach, Golin Kosowitz and Valerie Sancibrian. Although they all are still helping in some way, they did not have the time to serve on the Board and we want to publicly thank them for their wonderful efforts. We did elect a new board member, Hollie Nelson, who is our new volunteer coordinator. Hollie has jumped right in and has already helped with several events and we look forward to her continued and long-term assistance. We also lost our long-time intake coordinator, Wylyn Doherty, who moved to Mississippi, but is still providing us with her wonderful wisdom and guidance in our intake efforts. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and our intake and adoption folks stay busy and we could not be successful without them. Well, last year we were blessed with the Irish 9, and this year, we had a surprise, the Patriot Pack. Unbeknown to us and a couple of our vets, one of our intakes was pregnant and delivered on July 4, Independence Day; hence the Patriot pack label. They were named George (Washington), Ben (Franklin), Thomas (Jefferson), Patrick (Henry) and Betsy (Ross). Many thanks to Tom & Carol Kiernan, who had been fostering the mom, and now have added the title of mid-husband and mid-wife to their names. Tom & Carol are long-time members, foster parents, and deserve a big round of applause. Hooray! It's not too early to think about serving YOUR club as a volunteer, board member, or committee member. Talk to any of our board members about the various opportunities. We hope you will consider the reward you will receive from aiding our 4-legged Golden beauties. Several members have asked me over the past few months how our 20th Anniversary fund raising went. While we haven't reached the goal of $20,000 we originally set, we received over $ 12,500 so far for the 20th anniversary. If you wish, you still have the opportunity to make a donation to GRRCC for this accomplishment of rescuing and providing for over 1500 Goldens since our start. Thanks to all who have donated. GRRCC appreciates your continue support. GRRCC was presented a check for $ 750 from the NC Veterinarian Foundation for our continued work with unwanted and abandoned Goldens. Dr. Marguerite Gleason of Carolinas Animal Hospital sponsored and suggested GRRCC for this and presented the check to GRRCC President, Gene Fitzpatrick, at her office earlier this year. Dr. Gleason is a longtime member of GRRCC and we appreciate her continued support.
