Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a carbohydrate

more specifically a mucopolysaccharide occurring naturally throughout the human body. It can be several
thousands of sugars (carbohydrates) long. When not bound to other molecules, it binds to water giving it
a stiff viscous quality similar to “Jello”. This viscous gel is one of the most heavily researched substances
in medicine today with thousands of clinical trials; mostly in the fields of orthopedics and eye surgery. Its
function in the body is, amongst other things, to bind water and to lubricate movable parts of the body
such as joints and muscles. Its consistency and tissue-friendliness allows it to be used in skin-care products as an excellent moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrophilic (water-loving) molecules
in nature and can be described as “nature’s moisturizer”.

ACID
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is found naturally in
almost every cell in the body and occurs in
high concentrations in specific body locations. In each body location, it serves a
different function. Unfortunately, HA also has
a half-life (the time it takes for the molecule
to get broken down and excreted from the
body) of less than 3 days and possibly even
as little as one day in the skin. For this reason, it is imperative that the body continually
replenishes itself with HA.

Our joints (like the elbows and knees) are surrounded by the synovial membrane which
forms a capsule around the ends of the two articulating bones. This membrane secretes
a liquid called the synovial fluid, a viscous fluid with the consistency of motor oil. It has
many functions, but none more important than providing the elastic shock absorbing
properties of the joint. Its second most important function in the joint is to carry nutrients
to the cartilage and remove waste from the joint capsule. Normally these processes are
carried out via the blood vessels, but because cartilage is without blood flow (avascular)

All of the atributes and characteristics of hyaluronic acid explained in this catalog are applicable to all mammals; more specificially dogs, cats, horses, and
humans. All of our HA supplements support healthy functions for all of the recipients listed above.
What is the Chemical Structure of HA?
It is naturally produced in the mammal body and is chemically classified as a
Glycosaminoglycan. In the body, HA always presents itself as a high molecular
weight and large molecular volume molecule. The molecule is made up of a
repetitive sequence of two modified simple sugars, one called glucuronic acid
and the other N acetyl glucosamine. These compounds are both negatively
charged and when put together they repel. This which produces an exceptionally
elongated molecule (high molecular weight). HA molecules that are long and
large in size produce a high viscosity which, in turn, provides a lubrication and
shock absorbing effect. Because of this, it resists compression and allows the
joints and skin to bear weight, withstand tension, and endure abuses, such as
physical trauma and abrasion that no other tissue in the body could withstand.

Where can it be found in the body?
Bones/cartilage
Hyaluronic acid is found in all bones and cartilage structures throughout the
mammal’s body. Both of these structures provide a resilient rigidity to the structure of the body. HA is especially found in various forms of cartilage but none
more than the hyaline cartilage. As you’ve probably guessed it, hyaline is short
for hyaluronic acid.
Tendons and ligaments/connective tissue
Connective tissue is found everywhere in the body. It does much more than
connect body parts; it has many forms and functions. Its major functions include
binding, support, protection, and insulation. One such example of connective
tissue is the cordlike structures that connect muscle to bone (tendons) and bone
to bone (ligaments). In all connective tissue there are three structural elements.
They are ground substance (hyaluronic acid), stretchy fibers (collagen and elastin) and a fundamental cell type. Whereas all other primary tissues in the body
are composed mainly of living cells, connective tissues are composed largely of
a nonliving ground substance (hyaluronic acid) which separates and cushions
the living cells of the connective tissue. The separation and cushioning allow the
tissue to bear weight, withstand great tension and endure abuses that no other
body tissue could. All of this is made possible because of the presence of the HA
and its ability to form the gelatinous ground substance fluid.
Scalp tissue and hair follicles
Structurally the scalp is identical to the skin tissue located throughout the body
except it also contains about 100,000 hair follicles that give rise to hair. Actually
the hair and the hair follicle are a derivative of skin tissue.
There are two distinctive skin layers: the epidermis (outer layer) which gives
rise to the protective shield of the body, and the dermal layer (deep layer) which
makes up the bulk of the skin and is where the hair follicle is located.
This dermal layer is composed of connective tissue that provides support, and
nourishes and hydrates the deep layers of the scalp with its gelatinous, fluid
like characteristics. The result is healthy, lustrous hair and a moisturized scalp.
Again, all of this is made possible because of the presence of HA in the scalp
tissue and its ability to form this fluid and hold water.
Lips
The lips are a core of skeletal muscle covered by skin tissue. The dermal layer
of the lips is composed primarily of connective tissue and its their components,
hyaluronic acid and collagen, that give the structure (shape) and plumpness
to the lips. The hyaluronic acid binds to water creating a gelatinous fluid that
hydrates the surrounding tissue and keeps the collagen (responsible for keeping
the skin tight) nourished and healthy. The result is healthy, well hydrated and
plump lips that are well protected from the environment.
Vision
Hyaluronic acid is highly concentrated inside the eyeball. The fluid inside the eye,
called the vitreous humor, is composed almost completely of hyaluronic acid.
The HA gives the fluid inside the eye a viscous gel like property. This gel acts as
a shock absorber for the eye and also serves to transport nutrients into the eye.
Eye surgeons inject HA directly into the eye to help maintain its shape during
surgery. It has been said that after the fifth decade of life, our eyes stop producing the much needed HA resulting in various eye concerns.
Gum tissue (connective tissue)
The gums (gingivoe) are composed of dense fibrous connective tissue (ligaments) which secure the teeth to the aveloar bone (jaw bone). Once again, connective tissue is composed of a fibrous tissue surrounded by hyaluronic acid
(extra-cellular matrix). Without the hyaluronic acid, the gum tissue becomes
unhealthy. If the HA is present it helps to provide the tensile strength of the ligaments that secure the tooth in place by providing hydration and nourishment. The
result is healthy gums.
Skin
Although HA can be found naturally in almost every cell in the body, it is found in
the greatest concentrations, almost 50%, in the skin tissue. It is found in both the
deep underlying dermal areas as well as the visible epidermal top layers. Young
skin remains smooth, elastic and healthy with the help of the large amounts of
HA that it contains. The HA provides continuous moisture to the skin by binding
up to 1000 times its weight in water. With age, the ability of the skin to produce
HA decreases, leaving the skin unhealthy and wrinkled.
ECM (ground substance)
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a gelatinous fluid that surrounds almost all living cells and is essential to life. It gives structure and support to the body: without
it, we would just be trillions of cells without shape or function. It is essentially the
mortar between the bricks. The skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments
are examples of where the ECM is located in the body. The ECM is composed
of material (fibrous elements) called elastin and collagen surrounded by HA a
gelatinous substance (hyaluronic acid). HA’s role in the ECM is to prevent the
stretchy fibers in the body from overstretching and drying out by continually bathing them in this nutritious water-based gelatinous fluid. It also serves as a wonderful medium through which nutrients and waste are transported to and from the
cells of these structures. This fluid would not exist if it was not for the ability of the
HA molecule to bind up to 1000 times its weight in water.
Synovial fluid
The joints (like the elbows and knees) are surrounded by the synovial membrane
which forms a capsule around the ends of the two articulating bones. This membrane secretes a liquid called the synovial fluid, a viscous fluid with the consistency of motor oil. It has many functions, but none more important than providing
the elastic shock absorbing properties of the joint. Its second most important
function in the joint is to carry nutrients to the cartilage and remove waste from
the joint capsule. Normally these processes are carried out via the blood vessels
but because cartilage is without blood flow (avascular) the body relies on the
hyaluronic acid to perform this function.
Sources of hyaluronic acid
Liquid solutions by nature have always been more readily absorbed into the
body. This remains true when dealing with the HA molecule. The HA molecule
has the ability to bind up to 1000 times its weight in water. If the HA molecule
could not do this, it could not perform all the life supporting functions in the body
that it is known for. The process of binding the HA to water is very lengthy. The
HA molecule needs adequate time to interact with the water, much like a sponge,
thus allowing the HA to fully saturate. In fact, it can take up to 2 days for the
molecule to become fully bound to water. If insufficient time is not provided, the
HA does not fully bind and never performs. It is for this reason that liquid HA in
an already bound liquid form is superior. Liquid HA is also far more likely to move
through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream than a powder or dry form. of HA.
The result is that a large amount of non-liquid HA will never get absorbed and will
generally be excreted as waste.
High molecular weight ha advantages
1. Most sodium hyaluronate products have comparatively low molecular weight
levels, well below the optimum range for an effective amount. Our hyaluronic acid
has a molecular weight that is up to six times heavier than the low molecularweight competitors.This provides joint, skin, eye, and hair support and benefit.

6. High molecular weight HA is readily absorbed because of its rope like appearance. Feeding the large HA molecule through the pores of the digestive tract is
like feeding a rope down a well. HMW HA is an intact molecule, but is still very
small in comparison to the pores of the digestive tract.
7. According to a recent study by researchers Smith and Goush, they suggested
that the body patterns its HA production based upon what kind of HA is present
in the body. This most likely explains the reason why the body cannot rebuild
the necessary high molecular weight HA from low molecular weight HA already
present in the body.

Upon impact, the long, intertwined HMW sodium hyaluronate molecules compress to absorb the impact and then spring back to their previous shape, ready
to help absorb the next shock. Lower molecular-weight cannot compress and

Comparison of non-animal vs. animal
Bacterial fermentation is the only non-animal source of hyaluronic acid. The
ingredient is non-GMO [genetically modified organism] and vegan friendly. It is
also the only form that is used as an oral, a topical and as an injectable. Bacterial
fermentation is available in a higher molecular weight form only, the method of
choice for applications utilizing needles. This method produces a pure HA molecule free of contaminants.
Do I need to take these supplement with food?
Synthovial Seven® is easily tolerated with or without food. We recommend taking
Synthovial Seven® first thing in the morning (this is a good way of getting in the
habit of taking it everyday). It is only necessary to take it once a day, although
many people take it in the morning and again at bedtime and report excellent
results. As with any nutritional supplement, it is important to be consistent and
take it every day.
Problems with animal source HA
• Allows the inadvertent contamination with animal inherent, bacteria, virus, and
prions, (proteinaceous infectious particles), potentially responsible for certain
human diseases.
• Can only produce low molecular weight HA.
• Sufficient animals must be available to provide HA which is certainly not animal
friendly.
• These sources are of concern when injected into the body due to the risk of
infections by contamination.
• Cannot be displayed in a liquid form because the foreign particulate cannot be
properly filtered, leaving an unappealing appearance. Usually this source is placed
into a capsule, powder or soft gel to mask the impurities and hide the contaminants.

How long has HA been used?
Hyaluronic acid was first used commercially in 1942 when Endre Balazs applied
for a patent to use it as a substitute for egg white in bakery products. He went
on to become the leading expert on HA, and made the majority of discoveries
concerning HA. Hyaluronic acid has been used for many applications ever since.
How is your hyaluronic acid absorbed, and where does it go?
(The following is an exerpt from a research study conducted on HA.) Washing-
ton. D.C., April 18, 2004 – A consortium of scientists released clinical research
results about oral delivery of radiolabeled Hyaluronan (HA) and its ability to be
taken up by joints. Dr. Alex Schauss, Director of AIBMR, presented the findings at the 2004 Experimental Biology conference, conducted by the Federation
of American Societies for Experimental Biology. Hyaluronan has been used for
years in veterinary and human medicine as an injection to replace lost joint fluid.
“This is the first time hyaluronic acid has been reported to be absorbed orally,
which paves the way for HA dietary supplements to be introduced and deliver on
anti-aging and joint health promises,” said Dr. Luke Bucci, Ph.D., Vice President
of Research for Weider Nutrition International.
Until now, there was no data on pharmacokinetics after oral intake and the medicinal use
of hyaluronic acid was limited to injections or
topical applications. The results of this study,
which examined the absorption, excretion and
distribution of radiolabeled HA after a single oral
administration in Wistar rats and Beagle dogs,
demonstrated that HA is absorbed and distributed to organs and joints after a single oral
administration.
