Can you believe it is May already? It is hard to believe that the school year is quickly coming to a close. As we move into this very busy time of the year I’d like to take a moment to thank our PTA, and especially our volunteers for the wonderful programs, events and activities that you have provided for our students and the support you have given the Oak Hill staff throughout the year. Specifically, thank you for the delicious breakfast the PTA provided to the staff on April 17 and the grounds clean-up coordinated by Devon Harvey on April 22. Thank you also to all of the docents who have made the GRACE Arts program accessible to our students in grades 1-5 this year. Finally, thank you to everyone who contributed to and participated in our first ever 5K Run for FUNds. With your support we were able to raise over $5000 for the Oak Hill Technology Fund. May also brings with it the testing season – SOLs for students in grades 3-6, Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) for our first and second graders, and many other end of year assessments that document student progress. You can support your child(ren)’s success by sticking to their regular routines, making sure they have plenty of sleep and by encouraging them to do their best. We know that the scores earned on the assessments provide only a snapshot of each child’s knowledge and abilities. Thank you for partnering with us to help them show what they have worked hard to learn during the school year. I look forward to seeing you at the many exciting events that are upcoming this month and into June – plays, concerts and special classroom presentations. Due to our large size it is challenging to have all of the students attend Continued page 2 PTA President’s Message We are nearing the end of another great school year at Oak Hill. This year was brought to you by all our wonderful, hard working teachers, staff and parent volunteers. By working together, this year has been one to remember. Thank You to all our parents who graciously volunteer their time to our PTA and school. Thank You also to all our wonderful teachers who work so hard to help our children grow and learn. We appreciate everyone who works hard for our school. Please be sure to participate in Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, May 7-11. Let’s show our teachers and staff how special they are! Thank you to Kathryn Pearlman and Melissa Hillelsohn, for planning Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week. The Oak Hill vs. Lees Corner Basketball game was a huge success! Thank you Tina Wallace and the great committee of parents who helped. Be sure to see the photos on our website. You might see yourself! At our May 8th PTA meeting we will elect our PTA Board for 2007-08. Kathy Smith, Vice Chair, Fairfax County School Board, will join us at 8:00 p.m. to talk about what our School Board has been do- ing, and she will answer any questions you may have. As we come to the end of this school year, I would like to invite everyone to continue to find ways to support your child’s education and PTA. We all know children whose parents are active in their school, perform better. We’d love to have everyone be involved in some way. From small jobs that can be done at home to chairing a committee. If interested, please feel free to contact me or our 1st VP, Annette Anderson. Lori Manik PAGE 2 T HE WO LF P A C K ! Principal’s message continued… V O LU M E 2 , I S S U E 9 May 8th PTA Mtg. For those of you who didn’t see it, or just weren’t there, let me tell you what it was like. First we went to the trading post, where we carved soap! I made a little soap bowl. Another girl made a dinosaur head. After a long time of carving soap, we went to school. We learned about schools back in the 1600s. Who knew that you were judged on how smart you were by your handwriting?! After school we headed over to the tavern where we had bread and butter that we made the day before. After the tavern we went to the candle-making shop. We dipped a long wick into hot wax. I made a pretty fat candle. After the candlemaking shop we went to the sewing room. We made a quilt, and we will donate it. Then we went to the Slaves’ and Ser- vants’ Life. Those people made me feel like I was a real slave on a farm in Jamestown! They showed us real yarn and I even got to feel real wool. After that we went outside to lunch and we had it with the rest of the 4th grade classes. We went back inside and went straight to Oakie’s General Store where we weaved baskets. We also learned cat’s cradle (a string game). We also got to look at baskets. Then we went next door to Bodie’s Blacksmith shop where we learned about blacksmiths. Who knew they were actually the local dentists? We actually made little trinkets. We even used real hammers and nails. It was very fun. Then we ran outside and we, of course, had to dance the Virginia Reel. I think we were pretty good. After that we played a good game of marbles. Then, sadly, we packed up and had to go home. I will never forget that day. By Fiona Kisiday, 4th grader PAGE 5 T HE WO LF P A C K ! Oak Hill 5K Run for FUNds Oak Hill takes off Running! Oak Hill’s first annual Run for FUNds was a huge success. With 400 runners, the school was able to raise over $5,000 for technology. The weather was perfect and all the participants were in good spirits. This was an event that truly created a strong sense of community. Teachers, administration, specialists, parents, students, and local businesses worked together to generate a festive day. There were raffle prizes galore and many students enjoyed their first massage. Runners were refueled with delicious home-made baked goodies and refreshing beverages. The finish line was decorated with dozens of balloons in Oak Hill colors. The race course was lined with people cheering on the runners and encouraging them to do their best. A great deal of enthusiasm was sparked by SCA representatives in the weeks leading up to the race by advertising the race on WOAK and visiting individual classrooms to drum up support and encourage participants. This spirit has lasted well into the week, and many people are asking if this will be an annual event. The race committee would appreciate any feedback or suggestions for a future event. If anyone would like a t-shirt, designed by Oak Hill students, please contact Rebecca Fredericks ([email protected]). V O LU M E 2 , I S S U E 9 PAGE 6 T HE WO LF P A C K ! V O LU M E 2 , I S S U E 9 2nd Grade Play Art Palette This month we are starting stitchery for all grades. This is done by making different stitches with colored yarn onto burlap. The fifth and sixth graders will also be working on their clay pieces and glazing them throughout the quarter. Since it is officially Spring, now is a great time to get creative and draw or paint outside. You can set up an easel to paint on so the mess stays outside and not on your carpet. Drawing outside is easy when you have a clip board and some colored pencils. Now you have a portable studio. Another great one that everybody loves is sidewalk chalk. So get some fresh air, spend time together, and get creative. We hope you have enjoyed your original works pieces. They look fantastic! “Thank you” especially to those that have sent in baby food jars. Gloria Delrahim “Ms. D” and Michele Truong, “Ms. T”, Art Teachers Just A Thought……from the Oak Hill Counselors With SOL testing just around the corner, we wanted to share the following tips that parents/guardians can use to help their children be successful during standardized testing. • Try to keep the usual daily routine at home. • Have your child get up early enough to avoid hurrying! Being on time to school is very important (by 8:00)! • Have your child eat a healthy breakfast. • Have your child dress in something that is familiar and comfortable. • Be positive and encouraging when you send your child to school. • When you get the test results for your child, don’t compare his or her performance with that of your friend’s or neighbor’s children. • Most importantly, please don’t hesitate to contact the teacher, counselor, or principal with any questions that you or your child have about testing! Thanks for your continued support! Dot Bennett Christy Ryder School Counselors The second graders perform their play called, “Dependability” on Monday, April 16. The play was about learning how to become dependable, led by Captain Dependable. Great job second graders! SCA Officers and Class Room Representatives 2007 This year Oak Hill’s SCA has been very involved in planning school spirit days, assisting with Back-toSchool night, speaking at Principal Merenda’s Retirement ceremony and assembly, as well as assisting with Oak Hills most recent event the 5k Run for FUNds. SCA Officers and class room representatives: * Appeared daily on WOAK to inform, promote, and update the event. * Visited all classrooms several times a week to pass out applications and to generate enthusiasm. * Volunteered for race day to help with water stops, race day set up and clean up, and act as sentries. * Baked goods for post race refreshments. Thanks to all the SCA participants this year, they have been a constant source of enthusiasm. Oak Hill students love to brag about their favorite books. This was evident last month during School Library Media Month. In April I collected 120 “Favorite Library Book” forms. This was a very low-key event. Students were not promised popcorn, ice cream, or gift certificates for their participation. Students genuinely wanted to tell about their favorite books. I was truly impressed by the written responses to promote favorite books. Of course the best vehicle for student-student communication at Oak Hill is our WOAK TV show, so 10 students were selected at random to tell about their best-loved tale. Other student participants’ favorite books were recognized through a daily slide show or a library bulletin board display. These book advertisements have definitely opened up some dialogue between students about reading. which will hopefully continue a lifetime. Thank you to teachers and parents for supporting your child’s interest in this project. Jenny Henry Library Media Specialist Reading great books and talking about great books is a wonderful way to generate a love for reading “Upbeat” by Ms. Peterson and Ms. Brady Did you learn a lot about Dependability last month? You did if you came to see the 2nd graders performing their play. Captain Dependable was un-dependabalized by the wicked Professor Un and his Procrastinite; but never fear, the dependable children learned how to overcome procrastination and do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. This week, the 1st graders sang along with Mother Goose and many other fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters learning how to make the best any situation—Rapunzel gets caught up on all her reading while she is stuck in that tower. Life is so much better when you live it with a positive attitude. “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade!” It’s been a whirlwind couple of months, getting all the students ready for their plays, but it is so rewarding to see the final products when the work of the music teachers, classroom teachers, and parent volunteers—the costumes are always adorable—culminate in fanThe 5th-grade chorus is tastic performances that the chilall set to perform “The American dren will always remember. We learned about the water cycle, camouflage, animals’ habitats, what they eat and drink, and much more. At the water cycle station, we learned all about the water cycle and the three parts of the cycle. We played a game where we learned about how water flows through an ecosystem. The next station was the camouflage station, we had an activity where we sat down and passed around dead animal skulls and old turtle shells. We would guess what animal’s skull we were holding or what type of turtle’s shell it was. Then we went into the woods and played a very challenging game where we would look and see who could find the most [plastic] camouflaged animals. We played a game about deer’s food, water and shelter. There would be three deer, and the rest of the group were resources. This helped us understand the relationship between the number of deer and the availability of resources. It was a lot easier to understand by playing the game, and fun too! tree. They would hug it, name the tree, and try and remember which tree it was and where it was located. We also rolled over logs to look for salamanders, lizards, and worms. We found lots of insects and other creatures but we made sure to put the log back to preserve their habitat. We went to Hemlock to refresh our memories about what we learned in the past, but we ended up having a great time! By Titus Jefferies, 3rd grader For the last station we went far into the woods and played a game where we picked a partner, put a blindfold on their eyes, and walked them to a PTA GRACE Arts Host Assembly PTA GRACE Art gets Creative with Alexander Calder! nuts, beads, foil, thread, construction paper, glue & tape. Their creations proved to be clever & imaginative! The mobiles created by Ms. Ramsburg’s kindergarten AM & PM classes are pictured here. American artist Alexander Calder once said, “A mobile captures genuine living movements and shapes them. They are at once lyrical inventions, technical combinations of an almost mathematical quality and sensitive symbols of nature.” We also had the opportunity to host two general assemblies entitled A Perfect Balance—(see photo bottom left). The theatrical performance integrated music, movement, puppetry, text & visual art as it allowed the audience to follow “Sandy”, an artist/ inventor, on an amazing journey to discover his masterpiece. By the end of the performance a very large scale mobile had been assembled in our gym! Students were in awe! The final GRACE Art project for the year was a favorite for most students! The program focused on the artwork of Alexander “Sandy” Calder, an artist who became known for his witty and elegant sculptures called mobiles. His mobiles became famous because they were the first to actually move when pushed by air currents & that movement caused them to continuously change design. They were carefully constructed of metal plates, wires, & rods. See photos at top right of student works. We challenged students to create their own standing mobiles! They were given craft wire, clay, foam pea- We want to thank all of our docents (parent volunteers) for helping us bring art history to Oak Hill! Our program was a HUGE success because of you! THANK YOU! “A Perfect Balance” Assembly. Tracey Webb & Michelle Grudi, PTA Chairs PAGE 9 T HE WO LF P A C K ! Oak Hill vs. Lees Corner Basketball Game Chantilly, VA - April 14, 2007 It was one of the most exciting games ever played in the history of the annual Basketball game between the Oak Hill Wolves and the Lees Corner Polar Bears, and most likely the longest! The Class of 2007 came out to play and show their wolf pride and spirit. The last rotation of girls provided extra excitement that supported the adage-- ‘it’s not over until it’s over!’ Momentum continued with the final nail-biting boys’ rotation. So, if you left early, you missed two thrilling rotations. Though in the end, the Lees Corner Polar Bears prevailed, both teams were magnificent, showed excellent sportsmanship and EVERYONE had fun and went home a winner! For those of you that like to see the stats, the participation numbers were impressive and further illustrate the great spirit that dwells within the hearts and minds of the Class of 2007. Please check out “Stats and Thank You’s under Basketball Photos” at www.oakhillpta.org.
