Zero positives on breathalyzer tests before student drive
home! It was a good sign that some students had to be
trained to blow into the breathalyzer. Mrs. Anthony’s
advice: “Blow like you are blowing out candles on a
birthday cake.” Apparently, some have not blown out
candles on a birthday cake either .
The after-party – when faculty have the DJ all
to themselves! Line dancing is a fave!

Darby – can’t think of a caption for this
one .

T.L. Hanna Baseball Tops Fort Mill in
Upper State First Round
(Courtesy of Anderson Independent
Mail online)

(TLH lost to Fort Mill on Tuesday, 5/13/14; TLH will play at home vs. Fort Mill at 7:00 pm
tonight (5/14/14). Please come out and support the Jackets as they seek to continue their
playoff run!
John Kerley threw six innings and gave up one run against Byrnes on Senior Day last month.
For the senior, who is not a part of the regular rotation, a non-region game at the end of the
regular season was one thing. The first game of the Class 4A, Upper State playoffs is another.
Nonetheless, with Hanna having used all of its starters in Wednesday’s district final
doubleheader, coach Daniel Crenshaw continued to show he has the magic touch by starting
Kerley. He tossed 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball which was enough to hand it over to Austin
Copeland and finish off a 3-1 win Saturday over Fort Mill.
Crenshaw, a first-year head coach, continues to find players waiting to step up. Kerley, who
gave up five hits, served as a bridge to ace Adam Hill, keeping Hanna in the winner’s bracket
and allowing Hill to start against the winner of Monday’s Rock Hill-Northwestern game on
the road Tuesday.
“We knew he would give us a chance and he did just that,” Crenshaw said of Kerley. “He got
us through the order twice, which is what I wanted. He competed, he threw a lot of strikes,
he didn’t walk anybody. That’s what we needed.”
In a game that included a 50-minute rain delay, Kerley kept Hanna’s 1-0 lead by staying ahead
of each hitter he faced until giving up singles to Avery Carter and Clay Helvey in the fifth.
Copeland then came in and gave up an RBI-single to Brett Netzer that was charged to Kerley
but no more.
Hanna, which had just two hits on the evening, answered right back in the bottom of the
inning with two runs, benefiting from two Fort Mill errors. Senior shortstop Max McDougald
drove in the second run with a double down the left-field line.
Copeland retired six of seven hitters the rest of the way to continue Hanna’s hot streak that’s
come as a surprise to everyone but Crenshaw and his club.
“We work really hard and have some really good players,” Crenshaw said. “Everybody
overlooks us for some reason. We may not be the biggest stature team, but our guys compete
and expect to win. I wouldn’t trade any of my 23 guys for anybody else.”
While the team is focused on the task at hand, it seems the team grows more loose the deeper
it moves into the postseason.
McDougald views each game as an extension of practice where Hanna’s preparation
overshadows any kind of pressure its feeling.
“Out here at practice we have a lot of fun. We have a blast here at practice,” McDougald, a
Wofford signee, said. “That translates to the game. Everybody in the dugout is up. I looked
over in the last inning and there are two strikes on a guy and those guys are dancing in a 3-1
game in the Upper State playoffs. Everybody is just relaxed and they play the game the same
way they did at the beginning of the year.”
Band Hosts “Chop Camp”
The TLH Band hosted “Chop Camp” for all drummers who plan to try out for the TLH
Drumline. It is a mini-training camp in which Clemson Drumline members help instruct for the
day! Good luck to those trying out!

District Budget Recommendations
Prior to the May 15th Committee of the Whole meeting, the Anderson Five administration
would like to highlight some of recommendations that will be made for the 2014-2015 school
year budget:
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
o
All eligible employees will receive a step increase, and all employees over the last
salary step (22) will receive a $250 bonus.
201-day Assistant Principals will have nine days added to their contract length.
District-wide, class size ratios will stay the same. While some classes with very low
numbers will increase, those with higher numbers this year will decrease.
The district will absorb the additional cost related to state mandated employer
retirement and also new health care law changes.
An increase in the transportation budget, to go towards bus travel between the high
schools, Career Campus and Southwood Academy. Also towards additional outside
of district travel.
Stipends will be set aside for Project Challenge Playhouse, along with money
budgeted for renovations to their facilities.
Increased pay for technology assistants at the elementary level, as importance and
demand for technology increases.
Personnel Highlights
District-Wide: One ESOL position will be added, and one position at Adult Ed will be
added. Star Track Academy will be dissolved.
Preschools: One new office assistant will be hired, and one new related arts teacher
will be split between both South Fant and West Market.
Elementary Schools: It is projected that the district will lose $483,000 in Gifted
Funding and $947,000 in At-Risk Funding from the state. All gifted and talented
teachers will remain with the district, as their salaries will come from the General
Fund. With the loss of At-Risk Funding, the district will stand to lose three reading
recovery positions (all through attrition), but will remain funding other reading
programs, such as iStation, ERI and our reading coaches. With an overall loss of three
general fund classroom positions in the district, we will still remain within the current
teacher-pupil ratio policy.
Middle Schools: This year class size most drastically fluctuates at the middle school
level, and even with a loss of 6.5 teachers district-wide through attrition, we will still
be able to keep classes at prior year levels.
High Schools: Overall the high schools gained two athletic directors/assistant
principals, ½ of an art teacher, one assistant, and two secretaries.
As noted above, these are only administrative recommendations and still have to be voted
upon by the Board of Trustees; however, the district feels confident in these
recommendations. Also, the items listed above are just a brief summary of items most directly
relating to classroom instruction. The proposed budget will also include line items for a variety
of other items, such as maintenance costs and individual supplements. Most importantly, it
should be noted that all reductions in staff came solely through attrition.
Bradley to Compete in State Meet
Congratulations to Courtney Bradley for breaking TLH Track school records this year in the
100 and 200. She will compete in the state meet this Saturday in the 100 and 400.
Track Banquet
The annual track banquet will be Monday, May 19, at 6:30 in the mall area at TLH.
“Fishing for Dreams” from Coach Ray
Brad Jones presents tackle box and rod to
an Outdoor Dream participant.
The Annual Fishing for Dreams Event last Saturday on Lake Hartwell was a great success!
Approximately 24 fundraising teams participated with 15 “Outdoor Dream” children
participating and fishing. The fundraising teams raised $15,000 for the Outdoor Dream
Foundation. Mr. Ray’s fundraising team, the Sting Rays, raised $928. The money from this and
other events go to the Outdoor Dream Foundation’s goal of providing outdoor adventures to
child who are diagnosed with terminal or life threatening illnesses. Each Outdoor Dream child
received a trophy, a very nice Lew’s brand rod and reel, and a tackle box. Mr. Ray’s son,
Wallace, won the trophy for catching the biggest catfish in the tournament!
After fishing in the morning, the participants and families ate lunch together (and shared big
fishing tales). This event brought big smiles to all the Outdoor Dream children and it raised
funds for other outdoor adventures. This was a fantastic experience that helped to brighten
the lives of child who need a fun, exciting day. We are looking forward to participating next
year!

TLH Avid Program
TLH’s AVID Program has received the following commendations:
COMMENDATIONS:
The faculty and staff of T. L. Hanna High continue to make AVID a priority and prepare
students for college. This year, 18 graduates will wear the AVID cord during commencement.
The site team has worked to create a mechanism to retain AVID as the school moves to the
4X4 semester block schedule. The personnel who work with AVID students are exemplary and
the school has thrived. In fact, the school was recently recognized in U. S. News and World
Report as being in the top 3% of school nationwide and second only to one (noncharter/specialized program) high school in South Carolina.
RECOMMENDED CERTIFICATION LEVEL: AVID Highly Certified Site
Because of its success, TLH’s certification level is being raised to a “Highly Certified” status.
Congratulations to the Mrs. Anthony, Mr. Taylor, Ms. Bailey, Mr. Lockwood, and Mrs.
Jennette for creating and running this outstanding program. This year’s AVID seniors (18 of
them) received 70 total college acceptances.
Senior Graduation Information 2014
We are looking forward to a beautiful graduation at Clemson’s Littlejohn Coliseum on May
24, and we know that you and your teens are excited as well. There are a number of points
that are key to making graduation the DIGNIFIED and happy event that Seniors deserve. Our
goal is to make this a time of respectful celebration so that everyone may have his or her
individual moment to be recognized.
Seniors must attend all three graduation practices – the roll will be checked. NO
EXCEPTIONS! If Seniors are not in attendance at each practice for the entire time, they will
NOT be allowed to take part in graduation. Mrs. Hilton is the only one who can excuse any
absences from practice. Appropriate school dress is expected, and Seniors must wear their
school IDs. No visitors are permitted at practice, including children. We will give out many
important items during practices. Seniors must have their school IDs to receive these.
Practice will last as long as necessary. It all depends on the behavior of Seniors. If we get
cooperation from the senior class, we can be finished by about 11:00 at Hanna. Another
school follows us at Littlejohn on Friday, May 23, so we must be out on time. Being tardy to
practice will just prolong the length of practice for the others. Please note that having to go to
work is not an acceptable excuse to leave practice early.
Some Seniors will have to clear obligations with various teachers before you can get your
diploma. Names of those who have outstanding fees will be called out each day of practice. If
any Senior does not clear all obligations by Tuesday, May 20 at 8:15 AM, his/her diploma will
be removed from the diploma cover and held in the office until all monies are paid. There
will be long lines at that time, so clear fees EARLY! Also, don’t forget that we have practice
on May 21 and 22 at TLH, May 23 at Littlejohn, and GRADUATION on the 24th.
Graduation ceremonies begin at 7:00 p.m. - whether or not any Senior is missing. For
graduation, all Seniors need to report to the ballroom area of the South Colonnade of
Littlejohn Coliseum NO LATER THAN 6:00! Traffic will be very congested, so Seniors need to
plan to ARRIVE EARLY. They should be sure to bring caps, gowns, and tassels. Seniors must
be dressed appropriately for graduation. Anyone dressed inappropriately will not be allowed
to march. Those not allowed to march have to pick up their diplomas at the school on
Monday, May 26.
Appropriate dress is:
Men – dark trousers (navy or black) ABSOLUTELY NO JEANS; dark dress shoes, dark socks,
white shirts, dark necktie or bowtie, cap, gown, tassel
Women – black dresses or black dress pants and black blouse, black low-heeled shoes, cap,
gown, and tassel. Absolutely no flip-flops of any kind!
As we will practice, graduates will enter through the tunnel on the floor of the Coliseum in
two lines. Seniors should remember that if they are in the right line, they will line up in
regular numerical order (lowest to highest, i.e. 1-15) for each row. If they are in the LEFT
LINE, they should line up HIGHEST TO LOWEST (i.e. 30-16) for each row before they enter.
At the end of the ceremony, Junior Marshals will lead you out, starting with the first row, just
as they did at the Awards Night.
***It is imperative to let family and friends know that it is our desire that the graduation
ceremony be one that is dignified and appropriate as we honor our Seniors. We respectfully
request that those who are invited to this ceremony refrain from outbursts, use of
noisemakers, and any other activities that may disrupt the ceremony. Applause is the only
acceptable acknowledgement of our graduates. Each year, we have individuals and sometime
entire families removed by law enforcement because of the disruptive celebrations that take
place. We will have officers in place to handle unruly guests.
Crafts Photography will be taking photographs of those who purchase the service ahead of
time. Flyers will be given out at practice if parents want to purchase pictures of their teens
receiving a diploma.
Creative Video will also be taping the entire graduation ceremony. They will sell these videos
for $20. You should pre-order if you want a video. Order forms will be given to Seniors
during the first graduation practice and at Littlejohn the day of graduation.

Letters with Course Choices
Distributed to Students
On Wednesday, May 14, rising 10th through 12th graders will be given a letter detailing the
courses they have chosen for next year. The purpose of this letter is to give students and
parents another chance to look at and finalize course choices. Over the summer, we will
create a master schedule and hire teachers to fulfill these course requests. Our goal is to have
no course changes in the fall after faculty has already been hired. Please ask your teen for this
sheet and make final decisions together. Students are to return the letter to their 1st Block A
day teacher by Tuesday, May 20th. Instructions for making changes are in the letter.
