A bookmark may not be that profound; but in this case it contains a rendition of the Foundation’s 35
year history. Each Ambassador and many friends of NADCF receive an updated version at their birthdays. It does give one a chance to assess the growth of NADCF.
In one sense 35 years is not that much as a period of time, and yet it can be quite

• New car & truck dealers of America and their many state & metro associations have presented
more than 4,300 CPR training manikins in all 50 states and D. C. The total comes to more than
$2.5 million and at least two (2) million people have been trained in CPR.
• Over $1 million in grants from Ambassadors have been presented throughout the nation.
• The McCarthy, Sanchez & Winston Memorial Funds have given nearly $1 million in gifts to
individuals and colleges/universities for such beautiful and diverse programs as Canine Companions for children with special needs, student emergency needs and the discipline of ethics.
• Employees of dealers who have faced devastating circumstances have received nearly $3.8
million in emergency relief assistance. (Some of the expressions of gratitude are enough to
bring a tear to one’s eye.)

• As a result of the horrendous impact of Katrina in the Gulf States NADCF moved quickly to
assist. The ready response on the part of NADA Members and their associations raised more
than million dollars for people of desperate needs.
• The Survivors Relief Fund Scholarship Program which is administered by Scholarship America
results in more than $500,000 in academic grants to family members of those who died as a
result of “9-11” 2001. It is heartwarming to report that this fund may run beyond 2021.

So; NADCF’s little bookmark certainly adds up quickly to more than ten (10) million dollars
expended in so many areas, to so many wonderful individuals. With such a strong past record,
anyone can be quite proud to say that it will only grow. We’ve reached our 500th Ambassador,
represented by Gary Reynolds of Connecticut. That means that the new goal is 1,000. Yes! It is
very possible and sometime this Foundation will witness more than 3,000 Ambassadors!
This industry has the capacity so let us help to continue the motivation.
Therefore, look to the past with pride, cherish the present and keep the gleam in the eye for the future. We can’t thank
you enough for the marvelous 35 years of helping to tell one of the many stories of the good things dealers are doing!

Foundation celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.
The Foundation has donated nearly $13 million. Here are
some of the major highlights.

The National Automobile

under the Foundation’s flagship

THE A M B A SS A D O R S P R O G R A M
It was a most eventful year for the Ambassadors Program. With
the leadership and guidance of Ambassador Committee Chairman Dale Willey, the program reached an all-time high of 500
members in 2010.
Through the program new-car and –truck dealers provide
financial support to educational institutions in the public or
private sector, emergency medical organizations, and institutions involved in economic education. To be recognized as an
Ambassador of the Foundation, a dealer, company, association or
individual contributes $10,000 to the Foundation, either in their
own name, or in recognition of loved ones, living or deceased.
The Foundation then guarantees that a grant of at least $1,500
will be presented to an entity the Ambassador selects every three
years – forever. Each Ambassador chooses the recipient of the
gift and may present it personally. Ten thousand dollars can be
paid in full – or with a minimum of $1,000 and the remaining
$9,000 commitment fulfilled within ten years.
The Foundation has four categories of Ambassadors of Distinction. As an Ambassador of Distinction, a gift of $500 above the
minimum grant is made in the Ambassador’s name every three
years forever.
The categories are:
• Ambassador of Distinction – an individual who completes
three or more Ambassador pledges with the individual being
the named Ambassador in each case.
• Family Ambassadors of Distinction – three or more
members of the same family who have completed their
respective Ambassador pledge. A “family” is defined to be:
mother, father, children, brothers, sisters, in-laws, grandchildren and the dealership entity, if named.
• Corporate/Partnership/Company Ambassadors of Distinction – three or more Ambassadors sponsored in the name
of the same Corporation/Partnership/Company where the
Ambassadorships are paid for by the sponsoring dealer.
• Association Ambassadors of Distinction – an individual
state, metro, or local dealer association which completes three or more Ambassador pledges with the
association being the named ambassador - OR - three
or more Ambassadors sponsored in the name of the
association where the donor is the association yet
the Ambassadorship is in the name of an individual
designated by the donor.

There are already Ambassadors representing each of these
categories. The Foundation has many Family Ambassadors of
Distinction, with multi-generations represented. Each year at the
NADA convention there is a pictorial display, and these family
members are grouped together. There are currently three Association Ambassadors of Distinction: Pennsylvania Automotive
Association, Tennessee Automotive Association and the West
Virginia Automobile and Truck Dealers Association.
Many state and metro associations take advantage of the
Ambassador program to show their appreciation to their past
chairmen for a job well done, and in recognition of current office holders. In 2010, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association made
James Seavitt an Ambassador. Irwin Garsten became an Ambassador when the Greater New York Automobile Dealers used this
method to show their appreciation.
NADA Director Michelle Primm surprised her mother, Sally, at
the Ohio Automobile Dealers Association’s annual meeting with
an Ambassador crystal obelisk. NADA Director and Foundation Trustee, Gary Reynolds, honored his son and daughter with
Ambassadorships.

There are those who saw this as a fitting memorial to
a life well lived. NADCF Ambassadors Program Chairman Dale Willey honored his mother, Geneva Willey.
Foundation Trustee Dan Wharton honored his father,
Gilmer S. Wharton, while NADA director Jim Waldron
also paid tribute to his father, Jay Waldron. Charles
L. Burton paid tribute to his late uncle I.G. Burton,
II, for his distinguished career as a franchised new
car dealer.

Ambassadors Program Grant
Ambassadors throughout the United States presented grants to
worthy hospitals, organizations, schools, colleges, and universities.
As the program continues to add new members, those eligible to
present grants keep growing as well. We salute our Ambassadors

T h e L e g ac y P ro g ra m
The Charitable Foundation’s Legacy Program is an exceptional
vehicle for deliberative estate planning and conveys the vital
community service role that franchised new-car and -truck
dealers render for the benefit of so many citizens.
The Legacy Program was established 10 years ago to recognize
those persons who have committed to the Foundation in their
estate planning. It is helpful to people who wish to take advantage of the Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status. Specific designations

may be proposed by donors in their plans, or a pledge to the
Legacy Program can be made to any of the Charitable Foundation’s programs, including the areas of emergency medical
care, economic education or private sector higher education or
the memorial funds or the Emergency Relief Fund. In this way,
members of the retail automotive family are given a unique
opportunity to make bequests that reflect their life’s work and
that celebrate their life and good name.

For Ean Williams, a 9-year-old boy from Bulgaria who
along with his sister were adopted by an American family,
life just got a little easier with a grant from the National
Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation that provides
him with a skilled companion dog named Kobe.
“Ean’s disabilities are very complicated and very rare,” said
Nancy Williams, Ean’s adoptive mother. “Kobe helps Ean in the morning get his
brace and his shoes. [Ean] needs assistance with dressing, so Kobe’s just there
to help bring things to him.”
Williams said Kobe helps her son to the bus, making sure that he’s safe crossing
the street. Kobe also opens handicap doors by pressing the button, she said.
“And then after school, just in terms of daily living, [Kobe] really bridges the
gap socially with children who are not disabled and brings them a little bit
closer to Ean,” Williams said.
The partnership between Ean and Kobe was made possible by a $10,000 grant
from the Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund to Canine Companions for Independence, which provides highly-trained service dogs to assist children and
adults with physical disabilities.

“I am always so grateful that the car dealers have chosen to honor Frank in
this special way. I think he would be delighted with this,” said Pat McCarthy
referring to her late husband and who presented the $10,000 grant to Canine
Companions at NADA in McLean, Va. on Dec. 13. “It’s very meaningful to us to
see handsome young men like Ean receive these beautiful dogs.”

Since 1998 grants of $7,000 have been presented each year from the Joseph H. Sanchez Memorial Fund for students’ emergency needs and from the John P. Winston, Sr., Memorial Fund for the study of ethics discipline to a private/independent
college or university in each of the four NADA regions. All schools from 1990 and 1992 respectively for the Sanchez and
Winston Memorial Funds were gifted at a rate of $5,000 or $3,000. For 2010, it was decided to designate additional gifts of
$2,000 (in the case of the Sanchez Fund) and $4,000 (for the Winston Fund) to bring earlier lesser grants up to the $7,000
level. Fifteen of those affected colleges/universities were given grants in 2010.

In 1985 the Joseph J. Sanchez Memorial Fund
was established to honor the memory of the
former vice president and general manager of the
Oldsmobile Division of General Motors and first
president of Saturn Corporation. Grants worth $500,000 have
been dispersed as of 2010.
John P. Winston, Sr., Grant.
1990 was the year the John P. Winston, Sr.
Memorial Fund was established for the study
of ethics discipline. This fund honors NADA’s
late corporate secretary, an accomplished
attorney who was dedicated to ethical practices and who was a
deeply religious family man. Grants worth $442,000 have been
dispersed as of 2010.

The PAA Fund was established in 2000 with monies from
the Pennsylvania Automotive Association as a separate,
segregated, donor-advised fund within the Foundation.
Distribution of grants is by the recommendation of that
association, with the approval of the NADCF board of trustees,
in accordance with the guidelines defined to maintain the
Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status.

Nine years after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, daughters and sons of Americans killed or permanently disabled during
the attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville,
Pennsylvania, are thriving as students of some of the nation’s top
colleges and universities thanks in part to the Foundation.
under the auspices of Scholarship America. The mission is to help
meet the long-term educational needs of the victims’ dependents
who attend college or a technical, vocational or professional
school in the United States. Grants provide money for tuition,
fees, books, room and board and transportation.
Grants of nearly $700,000 helped to meet the immediate needs
after the Foundation, working with the National Automobile
Dealers Association, responded to assist victims’ families. The
balance of over $1 million was used to establish the National
Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation Survivors Relief Fund
In 2010 scholarships totaling $71,000 were provided to 17 students. Since its inception the Fund has provided almost $510,000
in scholarship aid to 79 students.
The Pennsylvania Automotive Association Fund within the
Foundation highlights the wonderful relationship that our
national association and state and metro associations enjoy
for the benefit of the franchised new-car and -truck dealers
of America.

THE EME R GE N C Y R ELIE F F U N D
The Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund provides assistance to
dealership employees who suffer losses in emergencies caused
by flooding, hurricanes and tornadoes.
• NADA picks up all administrative costs for this fund; and
• All money donated to the Emergency Relief Fund goes directly to the dealership employees.
When disaster strikes:
• The Foundation immediately informs the state dealer association that NADCF is prepared to help;
• The state association gets the message to its dealers;
• Dealers can apply for aid on behalf of their employees;
Since the program started in 1992, the Emergency Relief Fund
has come to the aid of more than 7,500 dealership employees
with financial assistance totaling almost $5 million.
M e d i ca l Gran t s
Each year, franchised new-car and –truck dealers, through
the Foundation, donate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
training manikins nationwide to health, civic and educational
organizations. This year alone 64 manikins having an approximate value of $48,000 were donated to worthy organizations
in twenty states.
Since the program began, more than 4,500 manikins with a total value of $2.5 million have been given in all fifty states and

while spreading good will is what this program is all about,

Contributions to the General Fund from dealers and dealer
associations totaled $247,000. Other contributions include:
Ambassadors Program, $290,000; Frank E. McCarthy Memorial
Fund, $2,000; Sanchez Memorial Fund, $3,000. Investment
gain totaled $956,000 and the National Automobile Dealers
Association provided $60,000 for administrative support.

devoted to raising and distributing monies to selected emergency medical and economic educational organizations and

friends of the industry.

The Foundation is funded by franchised new-car and -truck
dealers and friends. Each year, thousands of contributions are
received from those who seek to express their thanks to their
communities.
