As you read this forget that Hwy 177 even exists and picture a 40 acre farm across the tracks from Crescent Ranch, in the area known as Stephens Trailer Court. The house was on high ground with all of the gardens, orchards, milk cows, pigs and chickens in the valley. None of the farm land exists now. It was washed away in floods, especially the floods of 1983 and 1993. Louie B. Santos came to the United States from the town of Nadadores in the state of Coahuila, Mexico, at the age of 16. He married Victoria Paredes whose family was from Florence. They had 13 children: Lydia (many may remember that she wrote for the Copper Basin News), Louisa (worked for the mine superintendent for 45 years), Hortencia, Armida, Louis, Rebecca, Eva, Arnold, Catalina, Julia, Joe, Charlotte and Alfonso. After Victoria’s death he remarried Amalia and they had three children: Velia, Flora and Rudy. According to Charlotte Santos Lorona, with only a fifth or sixth grade education her father had a good sense for business and kept good accounting records for his produce farm and traveling produce wagon. He quickly learned about the produce he was growing and worked out a system so that he had fresh produce all year long. Every one liked his fresh crops and there were times when men and boys would hop the train in Winkelman and Hayden in the night to steal veggies, especially his watermelons. The family has pictures of the huge watermelons he grew. Louie set up his own irrigation system using water from the Gila. All of his children had to work the land and it was very hard work. They grew green chili, rows and rows of white corn, watermelons, winter carrots, turnips, radishes, parsnips, and red and yellow bell shaped tomatoes. He had a flower garden and people came to the farm for his lovely flowers which included zinnias and cox comb. Orchards were on the lower section of land. Their dad ordered his seeds from a catalogue and Julio Martinez, the Rainbow Bread man, also delivered mail. The whole family looked forward to the seed delivery. In research for the Crescent Ranch story, Lucille Anderson spoke of how excited they would all get when they saw the Rainbow Bread truck coming up the Old Ray Road. Charlotte recalls her dad also used white corn to feed the pigs and chickens. Her kids Crescent Ranch looking to northwest from bluffs. Luis Santos in front of Santos Ranch home c. 1965. called her dad ‘Chicken Tata’. Along with all the produce and fruit there were milk cows which produced enough milk and they made their own cheese. Velia, one of the youngest, remembers vividly her mother walking down the hill daily to milk the cows. The farm was self-supporting for the family and there was always food for guests. People would bring magazines to them and Charlotte would look at the ads and long for an orange soda. Something they never had. An older woman, Mrs. Knox lived near by in a big cement house. The Santos children enjoyed going there. An old wooden building was nearby and was destroyed when Indian ruins were discovered. There were large cottonwood trees at the bend of the river. The family loved to cross the river to go to Don David’s potato ranch. They had two or three horses hitched to a wagon so they could all cross together. The river has changed course so many times that this area no longer exists. All of the older Santos children went to school at the one room Branaman School House which was located at the edge of what is now Kearny Golf Course and the airport. Charlotte attended that school then moved Continued on page 9 March 19, 2014 www.copperarea.com Copper Basin News | 5 “We breathe life into cold steel and call it – ‘RAILROAD.’” ~ L.S. “Jake” Jacobson Have a safe and enjoyable time at the 54th annual Kearny Pioneer Days The Copper Basin Railway People A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER: Jake Jacobson was chosen as North America’s “Railroad Man of the Year” in 1994, the Copper Basin “Citizen of Year” in 1998 and one of the “Century’s Great Railroaders” in 2000. 6 | Copper Basin News www.copperarea.com March 19, 2014 Uncle Sam giving you a refund this year? March 19, 2014 www.copperarea.com Copper Basin News | 9 SANTOS/CRESCENT RANCH Continued from page 4 to Hayden to live with a sister and attended school in Hayden Junction because her family lived in Pinal County. She had to walk from San Pedro to Hayden Junction. The next year she enrolled in Hayden Schools. Arnold attended Branaman School, Hayden Junction Elementary and graduated from Hayden High School. Julia went to school in California and would catch the train at the ranch for her travels back and forth. When Louie Santos became a citizen of US he was so proud to be able to vote and never missed a single election. He was very proud of his citizenship. Arnold, child number eight, was a farmer and cowboy from the time he was born. He had the nickname Bunny, a name given to him by his sister Louise because he was so pink and cute. As a very young boy he started working for John and Lucille Anderson at Crescent Ranch. Lucille mentioned him often in her book, “Bridle Wise”. Arnold (Bunny) would ride a horse followed by a big yellow dog from Santos Ranch (Stephens Trailer Court) to Crescent headquarters which was located just above the water pump and irrigation line at the current Crescent Ranch gate. (Hwy 177 did not exist.) He would usually travel on the railroad tracks rather than take the long way on the Old Ray Road which goes along the hillside. He repaired fences around Crescent headquarters, reset old railroad tie posts, and fixed the leaks in the tin roof when it was raining. Arnold cleaned out the irrigation ditches and built a chicken run and roost to the east of the main house It was three miles to the railway stockyards which were located where the Kearny Airport hangars are. Arnold went on all cattle roundups which were long and included the whole Crescent Ranch from Hayden Junction to Kelvin. They tried using the Ray Road as much as possible but often the cattle would go off into the mesquites. Fred Pasco was the livestock inspector and was waiting for them after the roundups. For several years Arnold lived with the Andersons at Crescent Ranch not only as a cowboy and farmer but as a babysitter for their son Joe. He planted alfalfa in the fields in front of the main house. According to Lucille Anderson he looked like an organ grinder as he bent over the canvas seeder turning the crank that sent tiny seeds flying into the air. Arnold recalled that not only did he plant alfalfa but wheat and barley. He was 14 years old and quite strong. He sowed the seed but it took two for harvest, with John Anderson driving the tractor and Arnold operating the combine and threshing machine. The wheat and barley were sacked and alfalfa bailed. He had to lift everything into the truck, off the truck and then stack in boxcars. He loaded three boxcars at the railroad all by hand. Amidst all the hard work there is humor. Lucille wrote, “Bunny trotted up on his horse with his yellow dog following a few steps behind. He had a worried frown on his face from the usually happy face.” The Anderson black bull was eating the Santos spinach and tomatoes; nothing was mentioned about how they solved that problem. Josiah Anderson was the original owner of Crescent Ranch and would relax reading a book and would fall asleep. That is how he died. Arnold was working at the house that day. He recalled Josiah carried a pistol with him at all times. One day Josiah and Arnold were leading four horses on the railroad tracks toward the ranch house. A train killed two horses before it could stop. Josiah waved his pistol, yelling but never shot it. Arnold hid watching, hoping that he would not get shot. I asked Arnold if he was the only one to be a cowboy/ farmer. He replied, “All were required to work always lamenting ‘No Quiero’ (I don’t want to).” His youngest brother, Rudy, followed in their father’s footsteps, helping Bill Stambaugh with his crops and later developing his own ranch south of Aravaipa on the road to Mammoth. Arnold had purchased a white horse for $50 from “Old Man Manriquez” at Hayden Junction. When he hung up his spurs to go to work at ASARCO he gave the horse back to the Manriquez family. His wife, Lina, said she met her knight in shiny armor riding a white horse. Arnold and Lina live in Hayden and have a beautiful green lawn. It is my observation that the Santos children and grandchildren have had beautiful lawns and flowers. It is in their blood. Trivia: Crozier Peak to the south of Kearny was also referred to as D3 Rocker, the name given to the Lower Crescent Ranch. The lower ranch house and bunkhouse was located in the area that is now a vacant lot at Industrial and Beauford in Kearny. Josiah’s wife wanted to name the lower ranch El Rio Vista which interestingly enough is the name of the RV Park and Laundromat across the street from where the lower ranch was located. There were 16 children with many children and grandchildren of their own so there are that many versions of this story based on each persons experience. Other people may also have different views of the same accounts than the Crescent and Santos descendants. These are their life experiences as they remember it. Arnold Santos celebrated his 86th birthday March 13, 2014. On his 80th birthday he got the wish he had longed for. He wanted a view of his beloved Crescent and Santos Ranches from the air. Roger Stern flew him from the Kearny Airport to San Manuel for fuel, flying Santos Family picture c. 1942. up one side of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers and back on the opposite side of the two rivers to Kelvin. It was a chance to see the whole area that he rode on horseback as a youngster all those many years ago. Happy Birthday Arnold and we will look for you and your relatives in the Pioneer Day Parade on Saturday. 10 | Copper Basin News www.copperarea.com March 19, 2014 Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce presents ... 54th Annual Kearny Pioneer Days March 20-23 –– TO DO’S FIR’ PIONEER DAYS –– Thursday, March 20 112 Williams Lane Kearny, AZ 85137 Phone: (520) 363-5681 Friday, March 21 Now Open Saturdays 9-1 4 p.m. ..................................Vendor Booths Open 5 p.m. ..................................Carnival Opens 7 p.m. ..................................Queen Contestants Introduced & Winner Announced 4 p.m. ..................................Vendor Booths Open 5 p.m. ..................................Carnival Opens Saturday, March 22 10 a.m. ..............................Pioneer Pioneer Days Parade (Allen to Upton/Alden to Tilbury to Beauford) Noon....................................Carnival/Vendors Open 12:30 p.m. ......................Parade Winners Announced (main stage) 1 p.m. ..................................Porters Ghost (main stage) 4 p.m. ..................................Copper Basin Idol Show (stage 2) 5:30 p.m. ..........................Cardell’s Show (stage 2) 6:30 p.m. ..........................Porter’s Ghost (main stage) Sunday, March 24 11 a.m. ..............................Sunday Service at the Ramada Noon....................................Carnival/Vendors Open Town of Kearny Pioneer Days Parade Sat., 10 a.m. Begins Allen and ends at Beauford Softball Tourney *** Horseshoes at the Elks *** Rotary Steak Dinner at GKI Saturday Night Frazier Shows Carnival Opens: Thurs. 5-9pm Fri. 5-10pm Sat.
