Proving it can be done Wow! Build a home from foundation to roof — and everything between — in 24 hours. It might have been a daunting task, but certainly one the NEFBA-HabiJax team was up to. In the course of two 12-hour days Oct. 14 and Oct. 15, volunteers worked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to build a home in one of Jacksonville’s urban core INSIDE: NEFBA president on why he chose HabiJax project. NEFBA President Rick Morales selected the HabiJax 24-hour build as the President’s Project during his term in office. The two previous NEFBA presidents, Daniel Blanchard (2014) and Dennis Ginder (2015), chose a HabiJax project as well. “HabiJax’s goal to have a positive impact on the community is a compelling reason See 24-hours, Page 35 NEW MEMBER PROFILE Brogdon learned the building trade from his father Even before he could walk, Clayton Brogdon loved the tools of the trade. It’s not unusual for little boys to like hammers, but not all of them grow up to be builders. “My father was my first teacher,” Brogdon said. “Under his guidance I grew up working as a general laborer in South Georgia. And that’s where I began to learn the trade and developed a strong work ethic.” Brogdon attended Valdosta State University where he obtained a degree in accounting. Always with a goal toward becoming a builder and owning his own business, Brogdon moved to Jacksonville to work and learn about the Northeast Florida market. With a unique combination of small-town integrity and bigcity vision, Brogdon opened Brogdon Builders and joined NEFBA. “I was introduced to NEFBA when my business partner, James Lamoureux, and I visited a monthly board meeting,” Brogdon said. “We were impressed with the many benefits membership offers. I knew signing up was the right decision for our business,” he said. Clayton Brogdon Brogdon Builders 3761 Karissa Ann Place W., Jacksonville brogdonbuilders.com [email protected] (229) 251-3603 Brogdon joined the association in August and has attended several events each month since then. He’s also decided the Remodelers Council is an interest he will pursue. “In only a few months of membership, I have made numerous contacts and have developed meaningful relationships with other builders in the community,” Brogdon said. Builder News N o r t h e a s t F l o r i d a B u i l d e r s a s s o c i at i o N A publication of Realty-Builder Connection 36 November 2015 Changing the life of a family in need Builders Care, UNF students build new ramp Hazel Taylor suffered a double knee injury in the late 1980s when she stepped out of an elevator that had stopped a couple feet above the floor. The injuries she sustained that day were life-changing. She did not go on disability or sue anyone despite living with chronic knee pain. Ultimately, she was no longer able to walk and eventually she became permanently dependent on a Hoveround for mobility. Her son moved in to help take care of her. In caring for her, he has lifted her daily and has carried his mother up and down the steps at their front door for six years, ultimately causing him serious back troubles. Taylor also suffers from cellulitis, which in 2012 turned into lymphedema, forcing her back to the hospital with regularity. Builders Care received a call from Heartland Rehabilitation Center to see if we could assist this family by building a wheelchair ramp. Taylor has no cartilage in her knees or hips and she will never walk again. NEFBA Builders Care was looking for volunteers when David Hacker, president of Construction Specialties of North Florida, offered help. Hacker, an adjunct professor for the Construction Management School at UNF, and his students donated a Saturday in October to build this ramp. The day was a grand success. “Ms. Hazel was in the hospital while we built the ramp,” said Justin Brown, executive director of Builders Care. “Her son was there to help and to let us know how very grateful the family is for the ramp, especially his mom. Thank you to everyone involved.” The generosity of Hacker and the UNF construction management students, as well as discounted lumber from Allstar Building Materials, allowed Builders Care to complete this project for less than $350. The volunteer team from the UNF Construction Management school under the guidance of David Hacker and Construction Management of North Florida begins work on a wheelchair ramp for a disabled homeowner. Working to keep members informed After graduating from high school in 1971, Lee Arsenault served three years in the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Vietnam. He started his construction career as a carpenter in the mid-late 1970s working on large concrete structures. He earned a Florida general contractor’s license in 1984 and started building homes in 1986, which is when he joined NEFBA. He has served on the NEFBA board of directors since 1995. Arsenault believes active participation strengthens the association. He has been involved with Government Affairs, Codes & Standards, Membership and Builders Care. In addition to being chair of NEFBA’s Codes and Standards Committee, Arsenault is chair of FHBA’s Codes & Standards Task Force. He is an SEBC Committee member and secretary/treasurer for the NEFBA Executive Committee. During the FHBA Fall Conference, Arsenault was appointed FHBA Area II VP, and PAC, continuing to serve with Codes & Standards Task Force. This year, he earned the Certified Graduate Builder designation through the NAHB. The Codes & Standards Committee normally meets monthly to discuss code and/ or safety issues facing our The construction team celebrates completion of the project with Reginald Smith, third from left, whose mother is dependent on a wheelchair. Only June 2015 was higher with 788 and that count was partially attributed to changes in the building codes, which motivated a larger-than-usual permit request filing. With a year-to-date total of 5,007, activity is outpacing last year, which showed 4,717 permits at the end of the third quarter. Hundreds of hours of labor in a 24-hour period. Maximum focus and commitment. And, the result? A dream come true in the shape of a new home in New Town. To call this a challenge is perhaps an understatement. Who builds a complete house in 24 hours? An unofficial poll of our builder members indicates that would be a foolhardy undertaking. But that was the goal of this year’s President Project and our challenge. Our success is a tribute to our members, to the partnership we’ve created with HabiJax to help restore hope and pride in community in some of Jacksonville’s FROM THE PRESIDENT Rick Morales Morales Construction Co. neglected areas, and to our commitment to affordable housing. To the volunteers and sponsors, my personal thank you for the untiring effort you put forth to accomplish this goal. I chose the HabiJax 24-hour build as the President’s Project this year because I believe in the mission of the organization. Having worked with HabiJax on other projects and having served on the HabiJax board, I am inspired and motivated by their dedication to creating housing for those who might otherwise never realize the dream of owning their own homes. In doing so, hope is restored in individuals and in communities. In addition to new students and new classrooms, the program is pleased to announce the addition of three new instructors. Carl Romano Romano, a mechanical inspector for the City of Jacksonville, is teaching HVAC 2. Prior to that, Romano taught HVAC classes at Everest University from 2009-11 and he the program chair for the HVAC program at Florida Career College 2011-14. He is also president of Total Cooling & Heating Corp. Romano got his start in New York. Early in his career, he was branch manager for Eastern Supply Co., parts manager for MCN Distributors and president of Kings Park HTG & A/C Corp. He holds a Florida State Certified Class B License. Romano believes instructors have a responsibility to do more than impart technical knowledge. “My goal in the classroom is to keep the students engaged, entertained and to teach them something new each day,” he said. “It’s my responsibility to make them good troubleshooting techs and not just ‘parts changers’ while they are learning the skills they need to do the job.” Paul King (904) 998-3628 $ 324,000 $ 310,600 $ 323,100 $ 289,200 $ 287,800 381,700 376,000 $ 363,100 41 King, a project manager for Campbell Plumbing, is teaching Plumbing 1. He has more than 31 years of experience in the commercial plumbing industry. During most of his career he’s maintained a dual focus between field and office operations. After graduating from high school in 1983, he began working for a commercial plumbing company in Jacksonville as a plumber’s helper, eventually becoming a journeyman plumber. He sharpened his estimating skills, moved to a larger plumbing contractor and became a project manager. In 2003, King opened his own commercial plumbing company, King Plumbing Contractors. In 2013, he joined an HVAC/mechanical firm in Charlotte, N.C., where he was plumbing division manager, project manager and estimator until returning to Jacksonville. Instructors Carpentry instructors: Ed Smith and Jerry Burt Electrical instructors: John Flynn, Harold Davis, James Douglas, Daniel Lamb and Reece Hood HVAC instructors: Billy Soles, Carl Romano, Mark Bowman and Rafeal Grundy Plumbing instructors: Donald Douglas, Sean Walden and Paul King As-needed HVAC and plumbing: Keith Campbell Having been an apprentice himself, King has insight into the training process. “I understand the importance of teaching them why they are doing things the way they are doing them, how plumbing systems actually work,” King said. “I was once walking the same path as these young men, a young apprentice working during the day and going to school at night. I understand where they are at in this point of their lives. I try to pass along knowledge from past experiences and show them the opportunities that are there for them if they do the work and put in the effort.” Keith Campbell Campbell, owner/president of Campbell Plumbing Contractors Southeast, will teach plumbing and/or HVAC classes on an as-needed basis. After completion of his apprenticeship, he obtained his plumber’s license in 1986 and his master plumber’s license in 1988. A resident of Jacksonville for more than 20 years, Campbell advanced through the ranks to become field superintendent and eventually project manager for one of the area’s largest commercial plumbing firms. In 2004, he and a partner founded their own plumbing company, of which he is now sole proprietor. Campbell holds plumber’s licenses in Florida and Georgia. He is firmly committed to apprenticeships as a preparation for a career in the trades. “A structured apprenticeship program affords its students the ability to focus on and discuss the principles of the trades while in the non-judgmental company of his or her mentors and peers,” he said. “In our company 80 percent of my management team attended a structured apprenticeship program. This confirms my conviction that participation in a structured teaching of the trades can be an accurate indicator of longevity and success in one’s chosen field.” $ $ Arsenault from Page 36 to address codes that are in conflict, or that have an impact on housing affordability.” Arsenault invites any NEFBA member wishing to participate by learning or sharing knowledge. “Changes to the code have impacts on building methods, materials, costs and profitability,” he said. “Keeping up with these changes is especially beneficial to all builder and trade partner members, and other associate members can benefit by increasing their awareness of this critical industry process.” Builder News N o r t h e a s t F l o r i d a B u i l d e r s a s s o c i at i o N A publication of Realty-Builder Connection 42 Look for your name on the Spike list ALL-TIME BIG SPIKE 1,500+ “Buddy” James 1,965 Doug Wenzel 1,393 GRAND SPIKE 1,000-1,499 STATESMAN SPIKE 500-999 Omar Farhat SUPER SPIKE 250-499 Richard Dostie Bryan Lendry Carmel Morris Ray Inman Rita Williams Glenn Harrell Vicky Zelen Joan Pattison Tony Raso Bobby Walton Jonny Moore Curtis Hart 902.5 LIFE SPIKE 25-49.99 462.5 419 418 405 361.5 329 317 301 298.5 293.5 286 251 ROYAL SPIKE 150-249 Marie Griffith William Cellar Gregory Matovina Robert Porter Glenn Layton Rick Morales III Richard Browdy Raymond Nasrallah Walter Williams 240 215 172.5 170 167 165.5 158.5 153.5 151.5 Hawley Smith Dennis Ginder Judy Hicks Warren Powers Andy Chambers 139 129.3 124 113 111.5 RED SPIKE 100-149.99 GREEN SPIKE 50-99 Keith Ward Bill Wilson Sean Junker Mark Downing Margaret Arrowsmith Sid Higginbotham Penelope Geismar Elwood Collier Jack Demetree Sr Robert Marshall John “Sandy” Semanik Barbara Moore Jon Lyon Maxine McBride Robert Anderson Deryl Patterson 96.5 95 90.5 President from Page 41 I’ve seen it happen and I’m proud to say, those goals are NEFBA’s goals as well.
