Preface
All of my ancestors, going back at least to 1590, were German Jews – a 350 year legacy. Of that thirteen generation legacy, three generations were decimated in the Holocaust. In researching my family tree, the magnitude of that personal destruction emerged. How many family members were murdered or lost in that horrible time? Thus far, I have found evidence that over 670 family members, including their spouses and children, perished in the Holocaust. Over 1,100 other uncles, aunts and cousins might have been living in Europe in the 1930s. I have thus far found no evidence of their escape or death.
This is one of a series of reports detailing my findings, each based on the descendants of one to four ancestral couples. For those who perished, detailed source information is presented. For those whose fate is unknown, the information that is known, often sparse, is included. My intention is to spur further efforts to discover the fate of those who may or may not have survived. More importantly, I would like to pay tribute to our lost family members. Hopefully, future generations will remember them and never forget the Shoah.
This report includes the descendants of ·
Elchanen Rosenbusch (ca1715-) and his wife who gave birth to the Rosenbusch family of Borken, Hessen. ·
Jonas Cantor and his wife Schiffra, who gave birth to the Kander family of Riede, Hessen. The Kanders merged with the Rosenbusches when Johanna Kander (1861-1936) married Josef Rosenbusch (1854-1924) in 1885.
·
Levi Gutheim, 1759-1831 and his wife who gave birth to the Gutheim family of Ungedanken, Hessen. The Gutheims merged with the Kanders when Levi’s daughter Feilchen, (ca1824-1887) married Leiser Kander (ca1815-1887) in 1843. Jonas Cantor was the great great grandfather of Leiser.
The source for this report is a family tree of 1420 members of these families that is the consolidated evolving work of many, including members of Geni.com and Ancestry.com, and individual family members. My primary sources/collaborators for these families include Steve Bachenheimer, Leslie Rosenbush Floyd, Fred and Robert Kaminsky, Fred and Robert’s web site www.kaminsky.nl and Hans-Peter Klein for his work on the Kander family.
As research continues, I intend to periodically update this report. 1
As in all genealogical work, there are errors and omissions. There are examples of information later proved incorrect even in credible resources like Yad Vashem and the Gedenkbuch. Please report any disputed information so that corrections can be incorporated in future editions, or, if a resolution cannot be found, so that the dispute can be noted. I will be happy to act as a clearing house for other researchers so that their information can be included in the whole. I can be reached at [email protected].
This report includes:
·
A list of the 87 victims in these families of the Holocaust developed from research tools identified below. It includes known close family members for each victim. Source footnotes are at the end of this list.
·
A Report of all the places mentioned in list of victims, including Nazi concentration camps, ghettos and extermination camps.
·
A list of the 82 family members whose fate in the Holocaust is unknown and any known close family members. This was assembled by identifying those likely in Europe in the 1930s and eliminating those whose fate could be determined. Source footnotes are at the end of this list.
·
A Report of all the places mentioned in the list for those whose fate is unknown. ·
An index of all family members mentioned in this report.
2
Registers of the descendants of each of the three patriarchs are separately available. They will be provided upon request with the condition that information on any living individuals may not be posted on the Internet and must be kept private.
Below is a table that breaks out the information in this report by ancestor. The totals do not add up due to individuals who descended from more than one of these families.
3
Internet sites used in researching these documents include:
·
Gedenkbuch http://www.bundesarchiv.de/gedenkbuch/directory.html, The Gedenkbuch was originally a 4 volume list, prepared from Nazi records, of those missing or perished in the Holocaust. The online version is fully searchable by a variety of facts including name, birth day and/or town, residence town, date of transport or date of death.
·
Yad Vashem http://db.yadvashem.org/names/search.html?language=en, This database includes information from the Gedenkbuch and Joods Monument as well as Pages of Testimony by family and researchers giving information on missing and perished individuals
·
Joods Monument http://www.joodsmonument.nl/search?q_mm=&q_search_form=person&q_advanced=1 This database focuses on Netherlands residents who perished or were missing in the Holocaust.
·
holocaust.cz http://www.holocaust.cz/en/main, This database contains names and fates of Jews deported from the Bohemian Lands and of the prisoners of the Terezín ghetto from other European countries. It also includes images of documents found at the ghetto including death certificates which sometimes include the names of other family members.
·
A Kaminsky Family Genealogy www.kaminsky.nl This is a primary online genealogy resource for the Rosenbusch family of Borken, Hessen and other families connected with the Kaminsky family.
·
The Kester family web page http://thekesters.net/Genealogy/Baer.html. This website contains genealogies for the families of Daniel Kester, the site publisher. Daniel is a Baer family descendant and has posted a detailed Baer family register.
·
http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/ The Association for the Study of the History of the Jews in Southern Germany and Adjoining Areas. This site has substantial information about Jewish communities, synagogues and cemeteries.
·
www.jinh.site50.net This site focuses on the Jewish communities of North Hessen and their families and has a substantial number of family trees assembled from original data sources and
a wide variety of other Jewish culture research.
·
www.Google.com No explanation needed. There are many websites covering the Jewish communities of individual towns, which I found by Googling for individuals who were mentioned in these websites. More often than not, I found new information on others in the community as well.

From Leslie Floyd:
MAX - Until last night I didn't have any record of Max's existence (son of
Haune/1855 and Julchen Giedelschen geb KATZ), but I found his birth on March
10, 1890 in a report that was obtained from the Rathaus in Borken in 2002. I've
asked the woman who gave it to me if it would be ok to scan and share it. It
matches the birthdate of the "mystery" Max on the Borken Registration Card that I
shared last night. So, here's what I can make out on the card:
Max geb. 10 March 1890 in Borken married to Flora KATZENSTEIN geb. Nov 13,
1894 in Rhina, Hunfeld. She came to Borken on 27 Dec 192(1?). They had a child
Herbert (whose birth also appears in this report) geb June 7 1923. Herbert died on
June 13, 1935. Max and Flora went to Frankfurt on May 3, 1939. If you can read
something else, please share!
In fact, #92 in the Schattner report describes the fate of Flora ROSENBUSH geb.
KATZENSTEIN and Max is #103.

Bet. 27 Jan 1942-1945 Riga Ghetto; Perished in Holocaust1
From: http://www.stolpersteine-gelsenkirchen.de/Search_Posner_Family.pdf
Carl Posner, his wife Ella, born Stessmann from the town of Medebach, and their
daughter Lotte were deported on 27th January 1942 from Gelsen-kirchen to Riga.
Carl was killed by the Nazi thugs in the ghetto of Riga, Ella and Lotte in the Stutthoff
concentration camp. A couple, Alfons and Sabine Donat, took over a sponsorship
for three ``Stolpersteine´´ (Stumbling Blocks), which soon will be reminding of the
Posner family in Gelsenkirchen.
Sabine Donat told us the following: ``Shortly after the war a young man came to my
grandma, and told her, that the Posners had been murdered by the Nazis. Grandma
didn´t ask for his name because she was very nervous at that moment. Photos of
the Posner family have been kept by my grandmother all over the years. After her
death they came into my hands. It has been a long time since I started my search
for relatives of the Posner family to hand over the pictures to them, up to now
unfortunately with no success. But these memorabilia belong to the family.´´
Relatives sought-after! The project group ``Stolpersteine Gelsenkirchen´´ is
currently searching for relatives of the wide spread Posner family. First tracks hint
from Gelsenkirchen to Canada (Hans Posner) and to the USA/New Mexico
(Sigmund Posner, Erna Wislawa Posner, Helmut Paul Posner, Herbert Posner and
Hannelore Boyd, born Posner).
