A Letter from the Board and Staff
of The Conservation Foundation
This past year was one like no other here at The
Conservation Foundation. It was a year marked
by great accomplishments, such as the launch of
our ProtectKendallNow! initiative. It was a year
punctuated by the growth of our organization.
It was a year that saw reinforcement and
strengthening of our mission to protect the natural
beauty of our region’s land and rivers.
We are thrilled by so many developments, from
our successful strategic planning that yielded a
vision for our organization’s future to the success
of every open space referendum put before voters
in 2005. One other development for which we are
thankful: The growth of the staff who work at the
McDonald Farm in Naperville.
For one, we welcomed Stephen McCracken as
our full time Director of Watershed Protection.
Long-time employee Jill Johnson is now our
full time Marketing and Communications
Manager. To fill her shoes, we welcomed Carrie
Thompson, who replaces Jill as our Office and
Business Manager.
We also welcomed to The Conservation
Foundation Stephanie Sheetz, who is now our
Land Use and Open Space Planning Manager.
Stephanie is charged with a Herculean task. She
is responsible for our new ProtectKendallNow!
initiative, a highly publicized program with equally
high expectations. Its goal: build an unstoppable
movement among landowners and public officials
to save open land and protect watersheds in
Kendall County, one of the fastest developing
counties in the U.S.
“Without a doubt, this has been a turning point
year for The Conservation Foundation,” said
President and CEO Brook McDonald. “Much
of it was made possible thanks to our committed
board members, who collectively met a challenge
to double their giving this past year.”
Whether it is generosity with time and money
exhibited by our donors, those of us on the board,
or whether it’s the conscientious, exemplary work
done by our dedicated staff, it is the combined
efforts of many that have allowed us to see such
great accomplishments this past year.
As we look ahead, ever mindful of the
milestones we’ve already passed and of the solid
support of our donors and the board backing us,
we hold great expectations for even more success
in 2006 and beyond.

Established in 1972 by business and community
leaders, The Conservation Foundation is a not-for-profit
land and watershed protection organization, located in
Naperville on a 60-acre working farm.
The mission of the Foundation is to enhance the quality
of life by preserving open space, protecting natural lands
and improving rivers and watersheds. The Foundation
maintains a membership and donor base that nears
3,500 individuals and 500 volunteers in DuPage, Kane,
Kendall and Will Counties, Illinois.
To help achieve this mission, the Foundation works
on priority projects such as natural areas and open space
preservation, education and advocacy. The Foundation
also works in priority watersheds such as the DuPage
River watershed, Big Rock Creek watershed, Blackberry
Creek watershed, lower Fox River watershed, and the
Aux Sable Creek watershed.
If you would like to add your voice for the protection
of our vanishing forests, farms and open spaces, and
help keep our waterways clean and healthy for present
and future generations, then you are invited to join
The Conservation Foundation.

StillGoing Strong
Voters continued to shout “YES!” for open space protection
Ask most political observers or junkies their
thoughts on off-year local elections – just like
the ones the suburbs experienced in the spring of
2005 – and likely, your response will be a pretty
big yawn.
Yet this past year on the Will County ballot,
something very un-boring lurked: A request made
by the Forest Preserve District of Will County for
voters to allow a hike in their collective tax bills to
the tune of $95 million.
Some distance away in Kane County, there it was
again – a similar request from that county’s forest
preserve district, this one seeking $75 million.
The Conservation Foundation is no stranger
to these kinds of requests.
In fact, it is the recognized
expert in organizing
campaigns to pass these
referenda.
Ever since it successfully
campaigned in 1997 for a
similar tax-hike in typically
tax-averse DuPage County,
the Foundation has viewed
efforts to help voters see
the benefits of approving
such requests (more public
open space) as a way to fulfill its goals of protecting
natural areas and raising the region’s quality of life.
In the past decade, The Conservation
Foundation has seen unbroken success with every
referendum campaign, six total, in which it’s
been involved.
The one put forth in early 2005 by the Forest
Preserve District in Will County was that
county’s second open space proposal since The
Conservation Foundation started open space
campaigning. The Kane County question was
also that forest preserve district’s second request
in just six years. In both cases, when the vote
w ww. th eco nser vatio nfound a ti on. o rg
“Protecting natural
areas for the
future required
securing financial
resources today.”
totals came in, the unbroken success record
remained unscathed.
The Will County referendum success was
notable for two reasons. Few such requests, if
any, have ever approached the $100 million mark
and not been laughed out of the voting booth.
That this one garnered “yes” votes and not laughs
means voters took the matter of open space
and their quality of life very seriously. Also, the
approval came amid the failure of nearly a dozen
other referenda put before voters by various other
government agencies in Will County.
The Conservation Foundation’s work on
these campaigns sparkled with many facets.
It organized groups of citizens who would, in
essence, become mini-campaigners among their
own circle of friends, family and associates. It
conducted polls. And it spoke with a reasoned
voice to the issue whenever it had contact with
the media.
“While it’s gratifying to know we have had a
hand in bringing success to these campaigns, the
credit belongs with the forest preserve district
officials, including Kane County Forest Preserve
District Board President John Hoscheit and
Will County’s Forest Preserve District Executive
Director Mike Pasteris,” said Brook McDonald,
President and CEO of The Conservation
Foundation.
“They – every district board member and staff
member – are the ones who had the foresight to
see that protecting natural areas for the future
required securing financial resources today,”
McDonald added. “And they are the ones who
found the political will to put the question
before voters.”

Planning
Kendall County’s
Future Open Space
Protect Kendall Now! is off to a solid start with its ambitious
aim of steering one of the nation’s fastest growing counties
toward more preserved open space.
Protect Kendall Now! also aims to help county
leaders ensure that forest preserve land acquisition
remains an ongoing and solid priority.
The initiative is being spearheaded by one of
The Conservation Foundation’s newest staff
members, Land Use/Open Space Planning Manager
Stephanie Sheetz. In her first few months as head
of the two-year, $316,000 program, she’s already
overseen a saturation media campaign, complete with
informational commercials, that successfully increased
awareness among Kendall County
residents of the development threat
facing them and the urgency to
protect open space NOW.
During the second phase
of Protect Kendall Now!,
Sheetz has been working with a
steering committee comprised of
representatives from each public and
private entity in the partnership to create a
master Open Space and Natural Areas Plan for the
county, which when completed will help prioritize and
guide open space protection activities for the County
in the future.
“The idea here isn’t to replace the individual
planning being done by local and county government
leaders, it’s to ensure all of these great efforts are
coordinated and tied together,” Sheetz said. “We want
to ensure that development and land conservation
don’t battle each other, but instead go hand in hand.
“This way, the high quality of life that Kendall
County residents currently enjoy can remain high,” she
said. To keep up with the progress of Protect Kendall
Now! visit www.protectkendallnow.org.

Why did The Conservation Foundation implement
the Protect Kendall Now! initiative in June 2005?
Take a Sunday drive sometime south on Ill. Route
47, south of Yorkville, south of Ill. Route 71. Keep
going for several minutes. It won’t take long until you’re
surrounded by seemingly horizon-to-horizon farmland
very reminiscent of Illinois’ agrarian landscape.
You might ask yourself if this truly is some of the
nation’s most development-threatened open space and
farmland. Think not? Think again.
Take that same Sunday drive south
on Ridge Road, a few miles south
of Oswego. Head toward
Minooka. You’re still in
Kendall County. Look west
(off the ridge for which the
road is named), and you’ll
see some of the same land
you’d see off of Route 47. Maybe.
Numerous newly-built subdivisions dot
that corridor, so the once-spectacular western vista is
fading fast. Look east and see thousands more new
homes that either are built or are being built on newly
incorporated land by Joliet.
Kendall County is the second fastest growing
county in the United States. None outpace its rate of
development in Illinois. It is projected that by 2030,
Kendall County’s population will balloon to 223
percent of its 2000 census numbers. Joliet alone is
expected to add 76,000 homes to the Kendall County
landscape in the years to come.
Why the Protect Kendall Now! initiative? Why
indeed. Its aim is to increase the pace of land
conservation by identifying all of the county’s
undeveloped natural areas along with the people who
own that land, and to work with all Kendall County
town leaders to ensure greenways and natural areas
within their current and future borders can
be preserved.

The
Prairie Oak Society:
w ww. th eco nser vatio nfound a ti on. o rg
Generous donors support
The Conservation Foundation
The idea for the Prairie Oak
Society was born out of necessity.
In the months ahead, plans by The
Conservation Foundation to initiate
a major capital fundraising campaign
will be ramped up tremendously.
Yet a year ago, it was clear that the
Foundation needed a larger core
of individuals who could give
financial gifts of $1,000 or
more if such a campaign is
to have any kind of success,
said Development Director
Chere Hayes.
“Those who can give
at that level can be some of
our greatest ambassadors,”
Hayes said. How those people can
be reached, however, presented a
challenge – one met, Hayes said,
when the Board of Trustees
took up and overcame
its own challenge:
Increase giving among
the trustees.
“Board members
can be some of the best
at identifying major
donors,” Hayes said.
“So they undertook the
challenge of giving at a higher level
to make it more comfortable for
them to approach others who they’d
like to give at a higher level too.”
What happened? Board member
donations doubled during
the past year, Hayes
said. Today, thanks
in large part to
their own strong
commitment,
outreach by board
members to their peers resulted in
the Prairie Oak Society ranks swelling
to nearly 90, more than twice the
number who gave gifts at that level
in 2004.
Being a part of the Prairie Oak
Society has its advantages. For
example, those who give at that level
get to take part in special events
designed specifically for them,
including tours of private properties,
some saved by way of a conservation
easement, Hayes said.
One such property is the Corwith
Hamill property in Wayne. Lunch
and wine were part of the event
held this past September, as well as
a walking tour, allowing members
of the Prairie Oak Society a glimpse
of a private property normally not
accessible to the public. Another
such tour will take place at the
headquarters of the St. Charlesbased pond supply wholesaler
Aquascape Designs. It’s a building
touted as one of the most “green”
ever created, Hayes said, and getting
to tour it will be something special
for Society members to enjoy.
Having such a committed and
active Board of Trustees and generous
donors willing to give so much makes
The Conservation Foundation feel
very supported and ready to launch
into new endeavors. The success of
the Prairie Oak Society
creates optimism for
a bright future.

“I think of The Conservation Foundation like a good friend. They have been
there for me personally as I’ve come to make decisions about the best use of my
land, and they have also been a good friend to my community of Big Rock and
made us all aware of the wonderful asset we have in Big Rock Creek, our Class
A stream. I think The Conservation Foundation is making most people aware
of the need to conserve precious resources, sometimes working quietly in the
background and sometimes taking more of a leadership role.” Marvel Davis, Big Rock

“Reflecting upon our childhood memories of growing up in environmentally rich
rural Central Illinois surrounded by what we found upon moving to Northern Illinois
is called natural areas and open space, we feel very strongly that these should be
preserved as much as possible for enhancing the lives of future generations as our
lives were and are enhanced. We found the mission of The Conservation Foundation

Dalip Bammi, Vice Chairman
“Natural resources are God’s gift to us.
The Conservation Foundation’s vision
to preserve our inheritance for future
generations is something I am very
proud of.”
James D’Ambrosio, Chairman
“I like what The Conservation
Foundation is about and how we go
about conducting business. Preserving
open space and ensuring a clean
and healthy environment increases
the quality of life for all of us. And
we do it in a non-confrontational
manner, working with people to build
consensus…I have always admired
the Foundation’s practice to support
a meaningful balance of economic
development and land preservation.”
Betty Bradshaw, Secretary
“I am interested in saving the open
space and I am very concerned with
what is going on with the environment. I’m tired of going out and looking in
Kane, Kendall and Will counties and
seeing cornfields that might one day be
subdivisions and I don’t want that to
happen. I’m involved because of my
concern for the environment and the
preservation of open space, for myself
and for my children and grandchildren.”
Carol Hancock, Trustee
“As a life-long resident of DuPage
County, I have watched the excellent
work of The Conservation Foundation
since its inception, and I’m proud to
continue my support with a position
on the board. Since I have moved just
across the line into Kane County, I am
looking forward to helping with TCF’s
conservation efforts in Kane.”
Christopher Burke, Trustee
“The Foundation is important to me
because of the critical role it serves in
the community providing a reasoned
voice for the preservation of open
space, protection of watersheds and
the promotion of environmental
awareness.”
Jim Huck, Trustee
“What The Conservation Foundation
does will improve the quality of life for
generations of people living within its
service area. Those generations include
my children, grandchildren and their
descendants. Its accomplishments to
date are remarkable and its message
cannot be ignored. I’m proud to be able
to contribute to and participate in an
organization that is making a difference.”

Board of Trustees
Robert Hutchinson, Treasurer
“Growing up in DuPage County I have
seen open space disappear at a rapid
rate. I realized that in order to preserve
what we have left, it takes involved and
informed people to make a difference.
The Conservation Foundation makes
that happen and that’s why I am on
the Board.”
Darrell Jackson
“The reason I have gotten behind the work
of The Conservation Foundation is that
being a Naperville resident I have seen the
development that has occurred, and while
I think some development is good for
the community, it can get out of balance.
Historically I’ve been impressed with and
appreciated the Foundation’s work to
achieve a balance between preservation
and economic development, and many
people I greatly respect are at the forefront
of carrying out this mission. I support
the Foundation’s ongoing mission and
expansion into other counties.”
Ruth Kretschmer, Trustee
“I believe that conservation and land use
planning go hand in hand. We have a
final opportunity to coordinate good
land use planning and preservation of
open space.”
Douglas Mains, Trustee
“The Conservation Foundation’s
mandate to save open land has
never been more imperative in our
burgeoning counties. Brook McDonald
and his able staff are highly regarded
in the public arena for their ongoing
success in land preservation.”
Ron Nosek, Trustee
“The Conservation Foundation board is
a remarkable mix of dedicated people
representing different ethnic groups,
different geographic areas, and different
walks of life. Their commonality lies
in their desire to balance reasonable
development with sound environmental
protection. Why wouldn’t I enjoy
working with this group?”
Kaaren Oldfield, Trustee
“It is a thrill and an honor to be part
of this genuine organization. The
indelible effect the actions of preserving,
protecting and enhancing our quality
of life will have on the future is
immeasurable and unprecedented.”

Jack Riley, Trustee
“I got to know the Foundation from
their successful work on the 1999
Will County open space referenda. I
believe that forest preserves and open
spaces provide an essential value to
communities and have been proud to
serve an organization that works with
such a reasoned approach to make sure
our communities keep their open spaces.”
Christine Sobek, Trustee
“Serving on the board of the
Conservation Foundation is truly a
delight - from both a personal and
professional perspective. My fellow
board members, the staff and the
volunteers are amazing people who
are absolutely committed to making
a difference in our communities. My
involvement also allows me to receive
up-to-date information on the latest
environmental issues and trends. This
knowledge helps me daily in my work
and community life.”
Bruce Schurman, Trustee
“At my first meeting, I was impressed
with the other Board members, but
especially the staff and the way they
approached their mission. They were
knowledgeable, far sighted, businesslike,
and creative. The breadth of projects
and services the small number of staff
reported on was amazing, and I knew
right there that the Foundation was
important to the communities they
serve. They emphasize reasonableness
in any situation and partnering as
their modus operendi, rather than
setting up conflict. This approach has
resulted in many successes. As a creative
group, the staff continually improve
the quality of their services and bring
many new ideas forward to the Board
and their constituencies. They are
enthusiastic, and yet very accountable.
The Conservation Foundation is a highquality organization, and I am proud to
be connected to it.”
Stephen Van Arsdell, Trustee
“I have long viewed conservation,
health care, and education as among
our most important endeavors and I
was delighted to become a part of an
organization that I knew was going
to make a positive difference for our
communities. Over the years, I have
traveled extensively and I have seen the
tremendous need for - and enduring
value of - conserving and enhancing our
natural environment on the local level
- in our own communities. In my view,
no other organization does that more
effectively, efficiently, or passionately
than our Conservation Foundation…
We have done great things; we have
even greater things to do…”
Ann Wasman
“I have attended Conservation
Foundation events in the past and was
always impressed with the organization’s
sense of purpose and structure. When
Kendall County became part of TCF’s
focus, I wanted to get more involved
since I believe their more practical
approach to preserving natural areas
will meet with better success in this area
than other efforts will.”
